SYNOPSIS

Inspired by Disney’s Fantasia, The Imagination of a Cavy shows the visual spectacle that is a guinea pig’s mind.

When let to roam his owner’s living room, Alfie the guinea pig, in a state of excitement, imagines a musical world that is in tune with the music playing on his owner’s record player. This world is full of upbeat music, ballet, formal attire, complete in 1950’s art style, using both 2D and 3D animation.

RATIONAL My project is a passion project inspired by Disney’s fantasia.

I chose to have a guinea pig as the main character, as they are my favourite animals and are very social. Guinea pigs react to music and names and in a film where sound is the premise, I thought it only right to use an animal which not only makes a lot of sounds, but also reacts to them. So visuals and sound will play a major part of this film.

My project will communicate how music can make you feel and will be a feel good film for all ages. 1950’s music will be used, which will be in line with the aesthetic of he film. This will appeal to an older target audience who remember the songs from their former years. I was inspired to do a musical short, from watching ‘La La Land’ and ‘The Greatest Showman’.

The musical aspect of the film will represent the guinea pig’s excitement of hearing music and being allowed to roam his owner’s house.

I want my audience to happy and intrigued by this film, as the purpose of this film is to entertain.

FEASIBILITY My project will be possible to complete as I have access to the equipment I need. I won’t be filming an live action scenes, so I won’t have to film on location. I will be able to visit pet shops to study guinea pigs antics and I can use reference material from the internet. I have a canon EOS 1200D which I will use to film any reference material, such as walk cycles.

The college computers have 3DS Max and the Mac OSX equivalent, Maya on my laptop, so I will be able to animate wherever I am. I also have an A6 sketchbook which I will use to draw.

As I have a mentor with the Creative Mentor Network, who works for Netflix, she introduced me to an animator, who will be willing to help me learn any relevant software for my project.

White living room, so all focus is on Backgrounds in different primary owner’s hands and Alfie, which are colours in musical world to in colour. communicate that it’s just an imagined world
