DIRECTOR One hundred years in, Southern University Laboratory School is standing strong as we embrace Scholarship, Legacy, Family, and Championship Spirit. These are the guiding pillars that hold our school together. Nearly a century ago, our school was founded on the premise of educating future generations of leaders in partnership with Southern University through its College of Education; thus, serving as a focal point for teachers.

As we endure the pandemic, the SULS family was able to continue to promote a learning community where scholars discover and develop to the fullness of their own unique capacity. Students are invited to experience education through dynamic instruction, self-directed exploration, and creative activity. Today we are proud of the spirited way our students and alumni continue to embody and further these ideals.

We are grateful to the families who placed their faith in our wonderful institution. Whether you are a current member or a past graduate, we are glad that you have chosen to be part of our Kitten Nation. As Director, it is an honor to interact with individuals across the nation who know, honor, and respect our school. This is due to our proud history, dedicated faculty, and accomplished alumni. I am blessed to serve Southern University and the Laboratory school at this critical point in our history. We invite you to explore our website and visit our great school. DIRECTOR VIRTUAL

OF

SCHOOL

Southern University Laboratory Virtual School has educated children across the state of Louisiana for the past ten years. As a school, we have endured many challenges being a full-time online program. We have also reaped the benefits of understanding virtual learning long before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, we could share our expertise with others thrust into our world without a moment’s notice.

Southern University Laboratory Virtual School was recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education as a Louisiana Comeback Campus. The State Superintendent, Dr. Cade Brumley, and a few of his staff members presented a banner to the school’s administration during a small ceremony in January. Louisiana Comeback Campuses are schools that increased the percentage of students scoring mastery and above and decreased the percentage of students scoring unsatisfactory in both math and ELA on statewide assessments when compared to 2019. High school Comeback Campuses also increased their ACT index score. Statewide, 41 schools representing over 20 school systems earned this prestigious honor. It was an honor to receive this award.

The great Maya Angelou once said, “If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going. I have respect for the past, but I'm a person of the moment. I'm here, and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I'm at, then I go forward to the next place.” SULVS has endured much, but we have come a long way. We will continue respecting our past as we progress to greater heights. We will remain steadfast in providing quality education to students from the comfort of their homes; we will do it with gratitude. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to provide students with quality educational options in our forward-moving society.

FOUNDATION

Kitten Nation, we are looking forward to the 2023-2024 school year. I’m happy to say SULS Centennial Celebration was a success. I thank Denise Armstrong (Centennial Chairwoman), her centennial planning committee, Tracie Woods (SULS Advisory Chairwoman), and the SULS Foundational Advisor Board for a well-done job. During the centennial, our stakeholders were able to support the Lab School financially through events like Homecoming activities and Give Day 2022.

We are excited to welcome our alumni, students, and families back to our campus. This year, homecoming will be held September 18 - 23, where we invite alumni, former faculty, and current and former families to participate.

The Annual Giving Campaign supports every element of SULS. The MDM campaign started on June 1. The Annual Give Day will happen on August 31. Our GOAL is 100% participation from our Foundational Advisory Board, faculty, students, families, and alumni this year. Your investment in SULS ensures that our students and faculty thrive in an academically challenging and innovative environment.

We hope you enjoy this second issue of The Kitten Prowl publication. This publication highlights the continued growth of SULS, and we look forward to an exciting school year.

The SULS Class of 1962 awarded three students with scholarships. The students are Jeremeyah Booker (1st Grade), Demi Vargas (6th Grade), and Carson Scott (9th Grade). This is the second year they have been awarded this scholarship. This scholarship assists with some of the financial burdens of our parents and allows them to focus on their child’s education.

SULS Parent Support The Hunt family has once again proven their dedication to supporting Southern University Laboratory School by providing financial support to the athletic department. As a result of their generosity, the athletic department has been able to purchase new equipment and fund various programs for student-athletes. Their contribution has not only benefited the department, but it has also given athletes the opportunity to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.

Furthermore, the Hunt family has demonstrated their commitment to the school by sponsoring the Centennial Gala. This event is a celebration of the school's history and achievements over the past hundred years. The Hunt family's sponsorship made the gala a huge success, with all proceeds supporting SULS. The Hunt family's commitment to giving back to the SULS community is truly inspiring and serves as an example for others to follow. Their contributions have not only benefited the athletic department and the Centennial Gala, but they have also had a positive impact on the SULS community as a whole.

Southern University Laboratory School is thrilled to share the news about the Harris Family and TCMG Consulting's generous support of the SU Lab Athletic Department. As an athletic sponsor, Mr. Harris's contribution will provide the necessary resources to enhance the athletic program at the Laboratory School.

One major aspect of their support is the provision of weight-room equipment. This game-changer for our athletes will greatly improve their training experiences and, ultimately, their performance. With the new equipment, they will have access to machines, weights, and other tools that are essential for building strength and endurance. This will undoubtedly help our athletes reach their full potential and excel in their respective sports.

The Harris Family’s support will enable us to make even more improvements to our athletic program. Their support will benefit our current athletes and attract talented athletes from the community who are looking for a top-tier athletic program.

The SULS Family is incredibly grateful to the Harris Family for their support of our athletic department. The SULS Class of 2023, Valedictorian is Kelsie Tillage. Kelsie is the daughter of Mr. Keith (C/O 87') & Ann Tillage. Kelsie has been with the Lab family since her 4th grade year and has maintained her honor roll status since. Kelsie is a member of the Senior Beta club and is involved in several volunteering ventures such as tutoring, reading and creating book logs for children, providing digital content for non-profit organizations, and spearheaded the Queen's Book Drive from her literacy platform, with over 1700 books donated and counting. She has participated in Varsity and Club Volleyball, Youth & Government, the Student Government Association, serving as Secretary, Vice President, Parliamentarian, and the Centennial Miss Southern High.

Kelsie has accomplished an outstanding achievement by earning $1.2 million in merit scholarships for college and has been accepted into 20 top tier 1 universities such as Spelman College,Howard University, and more. She will be attending Spelman College this fall.

In addition to maintaining a 4.25 grade point average while dually enrolled at Southern University, Kelsie has accumulated 33 college credit hours, the highest number of dual enrollment credits earned by a Southern Lab student. She is also in Honors and Advanced Placement courses, a published author and was a Regional Teen Officer for Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, the Regional Zone 8 Student of the Year, Second Place Regional Scholastic Achievement Award, and the prestigious Young Heroes Award.

The Class of 2023 Salutatorian is Madison Spears. Madison is the daughter of Ms. Angela Spears (C/O 92’). Madison has attended Southern University Laboratory School for 4 years.

She has graced the halls daily with a warm smile anytime you encounter her.

Madison has been the epitome of a student athlete. We always put focus on the student part first. Madison is graduating with a 4.095 grade point average while participating in many extracurricular activities. Madison is a 3 year member of the Lady Kittens Varsity Volleyball Team and a 2 year member of the Lady Kittens Varsity Basketball team. Madison received All Academic Honors from the Louisiana High School Association in volleyball and girls basketball.

Madison has maintained honor roll status throughout her time at Southern University Laboratory School. She reigned as Miss Senior and the Sr. Beta Club Vice President while completing Dual Enrollment at Southern University A & M College. Madison also participated in Futures Fund Photography Program for 4 years. Madison plans to attend Louisiana State University and major in Social Sciences. It is without a doubt that Madison will go on and do great things. Madison, continue to allow your smile to brighten each room you walk in. Allow it to be your light that will guide you through life.
