WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR 100 years in, Southern University Laboratory School is standing strong as we embrace Scholarship, Legacy, Family, and Championship Spirit. These are the guiding pillars that hold our school together. Nearly a century ago, our school was founded on the premise of educating future generations of leaders in partnership with Southern University through its College of Education; thus, serving as a focal point for teachers. As we endure the pandemic, the SULS family was able to continue to promote a learning community where scholars discover and develop to the fullness of their own unique capacity. Students are invited to experience education through dynamic instruction, self-directed exploration, and creative activity. Today we are proud of the spirited way our students and alumni continue to embody and further these ideals. We are grateful to the families who placed their faith in our wonderful institution. Whether you are a current member or a past graduate, we are glad that you have chosen to be part of our Kitten Nation. As Director, it is an honor to interact with individuals across the nation who know, honor, and respect our school. This is due to our proud history, dedicated faculty, and accomplished alumni. I am blessed to serve Southern University and the Laboratory school at this critical point in our history. We invite you to explore our website and visit our great school. In doing so you will realize that we are more than a school. We are a family where heritage and legacy are deeply rooted in our DNA, and our students embrace the challenge of growing into responsible citizens who will make an impact in their community. Sincerely, Herman R. Brister ’97

DIRECTOR OF VIRTUAL SCHOOL To say the past two school years have been unprecedented is an understatement. The state of Louisiana has been impacted by many major hurricanes in the midst of a global pandemic. As a school that services students across the state of Louisiana, we felt each hurricane and the devastation it brought. Although we had many families who lost material possessions, we saw their strength and the hope that lived within. As a state, we always find the strength to rebuild and come together in times of need. As the Director of Southern University Laboratory Virtual School, I cannot express how proud I am of our students and the work they put in each year. Even during the pandemic, personal losses, and hurricanes our students stood strong and persevered. During the past two years, SULVS has had more than 170 students on the Honor Roll with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher throughout the school year. I want everyone to reflect on how amazing that is. Many of these students were evacuated many times, lost power or water sources, and still excelled academically. One thing we know for a fact is our students are SULVS STRONG! We know that SULVS has the best families in this state, and we are proud to call you, our family. As I reflect, the word that comes to mind is hope. At times all we had to hold on to was our hope that things would get better. I believe that each day we continue to move forward we gain a little more hope. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” So, as we move forward, it is my hope that we do so with joy, peace, and love! Mrs. Nadia Washington Seals '02

SULS FOUNDATION Kitten Nation, we are excited and looking forward to celebrating the centennial year where our stakeholders are able to interact face to face. I’m happy to say despite the challenges of COVID 19, our stakeholders were able to support the Lab School financially through events like Give Day 2021. We are excited to welcome our alumni, students, and families. This year we kicked off the Centennial celebration with the Founders Day Pilgrimage where we invited alumni, former faculty, and current and former families to participate. The Annual Giving Campaign supports every element of SULS. The campaign will take place starting June 1st. The Annual Give Day will happen on August 31st. Our GOAL is to have 100% participation from our Foundational Advisory Board, faculty, students, families, and alumni this year. Your investment in SULS ensures that our students and faculty thrive in an environment that is academically challenging and innovative. We hope you enjoy this first issue of The Kitten Prowl publication. This publication highlights the continued growth of SULS and we look forward to an exciting school year.

She also sponsored the cheerleaders and the dance teams and served as the school's athletic director. Coach Marshall won a total of 21 LHSAA titles in track and cross country. Southern University Laboratory School proudly celebrates Rebecca Marshall's impact on the numerous alumni lives she has touched.

SULS Parent Support BEING PART OF CHANGE The James Family joined the KITTEN nation in 2015. Since joining, Mr. and Mrs. James have been committed to giving back to better the experience for their children and the other students at SULS. Through their recent donations, the Lady Kittens Basketball Team was able to raise over $3,500 toward a basketball shooting machine, and the Football, Baseball, and Boys Track Team raised over $11,000 to help support them during 2021. Mrs. James was the mastermind of the SULS Pop Up Shop that was held on the SULS campus during the first quarter of 2021. She partnered with the football moms and raised all the funds necessary to purchase the Inflatable Kitten Tunnel. Mr. and Mrs. James' donations have raised over $20,000 for the Kitten Nation.

Southern University Laboratory School Girls Basketball District IV State Championship The No. 5 seed Southern Lab Lady Kittens won their first state title since 2004 as they upset the No. 2 seed Cedar Creek 60-42 for the Division IV State Championship on Thursday, Feb. 24. Southern Lab led Cedar Creek 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cedar Creek would get within three off of a Sarah Adams’ three to make it 17-14, she would finish the game with 20. However, Southern Lab would score 19 points in the quarter to give the Lady Kittens an 18 point lead at halftime. Madison Alcerro finished the game with 10 points and was one of four Lady Kittens to score in double figures. The Lady Kittens leading scorer was an eighth-grader Asia Patin who finished with 19, Shalia Forman scored 16 and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with five steals. She was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player. Former Lady Kitten Quianna Chaney, now the head coach, in 2004 Chaney led Southern Lab to a state title as a player.

Southern University Laboratory School Boys Basketball District IV State Championship Southern Lab defeated Calvary Baptist 57-54 Saturday, March 5th to capture its first state championship since 2005. Ringgold led the Kittens with 15 points and was named most outstanding player. He passed the award to Jonathan Butler, who made the game-winning 3pointer Wednesday, March 2nd to get Southern Lab to the final. “It was my teammates that got us here,” Ringgold said. “I fouled out Wednesday and (Butler) got us to this point, and my teammates made all this possible.” Southern Lab senior guard Shane Foreman gave his team energy throughout the game. Forman finished with two steals and had one block that saved the game in the final seconds. “That’s my role on the team,” Foreman said. “I have to bring the energy, have to bring the power and they are going to feed off that energy and we just play better that way.”
