Betty Gold: Acero

S E P T . 23 - NOV. 23, 2004 ELEGANTLY ANGULAR YET CONSTRUCTED OF HEFTY CUT and welded acero - or steel in Spanish, the sculpture of Venice, California based Betty Gold has received international recognition. Sullivan Goss is proud to present an exhibition of new maquettes, each a conceptual study for a monumental sculpture. The series was created over a three year period and inspired by the artist’s frequent travels to Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Evoking the dynamic folds of the capes of bullfighters, many works in the series are entitled tirón - or Spanish for “to throw.” The series represents the maturation of Gold’s interest in complex geometry exploring motion, space and form.

The works offer a different experience from every viewpoint.

Casting different shadows and looks from different angles, Gold notes, “my sculptures are living things to me - that’s how people are to me.”

Our exhibition is timely as the artist prepares for a major international retrospective of her more than forty years as an artist in Palma de Mallorca next year.
