Listeners,

vinylart.info

The Outer Groove Welcome to Volume 2! For those of you who read through Volume 1, you know this is the flipside, the music that’s been in my life since meeting my wife. It’s a very different group of artists, and the portraits reflect that. Please watch the video introduction to Vinyl Art, if you haven’t before, by clicking on my picture. Again, complete with links out to YouTube music videos and Amazon listings, this interactive coffee-table eBook shares a collection of my favorite pieces. As I continue to listen to new music, and paint new artists, I enjoy seeing how what I do changes and grows. I’ll also be sharing pieces that couldn’t be included in this volume on my blog from time to time. My blog is a good way to keep up with Vinyl Art happenings, as is subscribing to my email newsletter. If you’re interested, you can find both from my homepage. Please don’t turn off the player until it reaches the inner groove!

Lou Reed: Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal: RCAI

vinylart.info

It takes a specific mood to appreciate Lou Reed’s music and voice. That, or a time machine. But if you’re in either one, it blows your mind.

Stereophonics: Pull the Pin, V2

vinylart.info

Kelly Jones’ voice is one of those, like Janis Joplin’s, that sort of defy explanation. Not many move me to tears. He does. And the music? Damn, it’s good.

Oasis: Dig Out Your Soul, Sony BMG

But then they deserve to be.

vinylart.info

Couple of royally arrogant lads, if you ask me, those brothers Gallagher.

Who else so brazenly, so brilliantly quote The Beatles, The Rolling Stones?

The Verve: Forth, EMI

“Life’s An Ocean”, the waves washed over us at the Roundhouse in London in ‘07. The perfect concert, standing front row. See the music!

Aschroft singing to all of humanity, and to us.

Nick Drake: Bryter Layter, Island

vinylart.info

Guitar out of tune. Life out of tune. Nick Drake’s silent tortured time captured by his brilliantly beautiful harmonies and words makes my neck tingle. Strumming softly, the music builds its wave.

The Rolling Stones: Some Girls, Atlantic

The strut of Mick Jagger. The swagger of Keith Richards. To back it up? Some of the best blues pop rock ever, consistently.

Bob Dylan: Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits, Coumbia

Great road trip music. Especially if you like deciphering scathing social commentary while driving.

Jeff Buckley: Grace, Columbia

Haunting. And a crack-up. The raw beauty of his voice sends shudders and shivers throughout. Then they’re gone too soon.

The White Stripes: Icky Thump, Warner Bros.

Meg’s deceptive innocence combines with Jack’s deceptive depth to create a deceptively complex and powerful sound. It still surprises me only two people make that noise.

Beck: Modern Guilt, Interscope

vinylart.info

Innovative doesn’t say it. Beck is like the modern-day one-man-band dancing with cymbals on the insides of his knees, never ceasing to experiment, never ceasing to perfect. And all that with such soul in his voice.

Bob Marley and the Wailers: Kaya, Island

vinylart.info

If not a prophet, at least a vessel. A vessel for life, for humanity to flow from purely, majestically. Marley uplifts spirit and motivates action with words and performance, powerfully, rarely.

Eminem: The Eminem Show, Interscope

vinylart.info

Troubled is an understatement, yet Mr. Mathers does work wizardy with his words, producing tight albums with multi-level, multi-metallic success. His raw life and pop persona meld to entertain and disturb.

But look in their eyes and you’ll see it.

Their image doesn’t quite match their voice, their talent.

As they mature, their energy live begins to match their torrid tunes.

Amy Winehouse: Back to Black, Island

vinylart.info

Her voice, seductive. Her lyrics, raw and broken. True art reflects life, and Amy Winehouse’s life serves. Say what you will about her choices, she lives it, she lets it out. Her groovy siren song.
