Sweetgrass New Carolina-Style Restaurant Adds Sweet Mix to Full Fun Destination Hotel

I
f we learned anything from Ratatouille’s Remy (2007), it’s that great food cuts through all the mist. Through the nostrils and then onto the taste buds, great food—the right food—can take you back to mama’s kitchen under her apron strings and trying to steal a bite before dinner. It can take you back to that very moment. If you’ve ever been there, it’s hard not to identify with iron-jawed Anton Ego, the harshest food critic ever who completely melts once he’s had a single bite of Remy’s signature but basic dish, ratatouille. Such is the goal at the new Sweetgrass Restaurant located at the Colony South Hotel and Conference Center. Catch a whiff of the Fried Green Tomato Jubilee as it’s headed from the kitchen to your neighbor’s table. It’s a classic, crispy FGT, served on heirloom greens & topped with Applewood smoked pork belly, goat cheese sprinkles & honey balsamic glaze. Then, on the other side of your table, you’d already eyed the Country Fried Softshell Crab as you get to
your own seat. It’s centered with cucumber salad & red onion and drizzled with aged maple chili sauce. You can smell the Lowcountry Jambalaya placed before you. Your mouth waters, trade the fork for a spoon and you’re ready. Savory pan braised chicken, shrimp, spiced smoked sausage, onion, rice & beans. “Those great dishes that mama used to make 30 years ago came from South Carolina origins,” says Sweetgrass Restaurant founder and owner Michael Chiaramonte. “It’s part of the culture of Southern Maryland. For people here, this is home food.” Born and raised in Prince George’s, Chiaramonte comes from a family of contribution and culture that helped shape the area. When then Southern Maryland Hospital Center, founded by Dr. Francis Chiaramonte, needed hotel accommodations for visiting physicians to the hospital, his remedy was simple: build a hotel on the hospital’s campus. Since Colony South Hotel was built it provided much more than a rest space for road weary doctors. It became a conference SWEETGRASS Page 12

SWEETGRASS from page 11 center, restaurant and a nightspot as well. In fact, Colony South Hotel and Conference Center has developed as a destination spot. There’s a 15 yard indoor swimming pool (open to drop-ins as well as guests) and Wednesday night karaoke at the Decoy Lounge (which hosts so much real talent it seems more like American Idol). Decoy also hosts live music/DJ and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights: the music sizzles, the floor throbs. And now Colony South includes Sweetgrass Restaurant, a new cutting edge atmosphere that blends rustic tradition with modern comfort and technology

serving up authentic lowcountry dishes. The outdoor patio includes a full bar, music, open flame pit and grill. All combined, the venue is a guaranteed summer hotspot in southern Prince George’s. It’s one-stop play, party, dine, relax & recover---and repeat. At the Feb. 24 grand opening, approx. 250 guests came to see and sample the new dishes and atmosphere at Sweetgrass. Sunday brunch is also a favorite. Sydney Harrison, Clerk of the Court for Prince George’s County was among several county leaders in attendance and support of the launch. “It’s a great venue for people to come and fellowship and
we always want new businesses to come to south county.” It always comes down to a great experience. “First of all, I will be back,” said Lucy Young. Young considers herself a very careful consumer who doesn’t go back to eateries that don’t provide the best in service and atmosphere. Sweetgrass made the grade. “I like the food and the atmosphere and the closeness,” she adds. “They make you feel that you’re a part of the atmosphere and whatever concerns you have, the wait staff deals with right away with a wonderful attitude. The food is delicious, too.”
