here are many ways National Women’s History Month can be recognized but no one effort completely encompasses all that women have meant to the best of the world.

That’s why it’s best to take a peek into everything that’s offered.

Whether it be an exhibit, performance, discussion, luncheon, dance, or by other means, there are many events in the DMV area that celebrate, honor and educate viewers about the history and culture of women in the U.S. Catch a performance of “Fur” by award winning playwright Migdalia Cruz, Mar. 17-April 10 at Venus Theatre in Laurel, one of the longest running women’s theaters in the world.

Buy a ticket early for the 31st Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon.

A thousand women will gather Mar. 16, 12 pm at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt. The theme: “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Prince George’s County Government and Public Service.” This year’s special honoree is Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.). Mikulski, one of the most dynamic leaders in the history of the state, has also served on the U.S. Senate longer than any other woman in history. In 2012, she extended that honor to becoming longest serving woman elected official in Congress. Now, after some 40 years, Mikulski is known as the “Dean of the Women.”

In Washington, DC, the best bet might be a visit to the National Women’s History Museum where exhibits and educational programs feature everything from the suffrage movement to the African American Women and the Civil Rights Movement program, to a look at America’s heroines - all year-round. Why should women’s history be confined to a single month each year?
