A SHORT TRIP TO SHORTCAKE

A BAKERY SERVING UP SWEETS AND SMILES

T

he day she set off to college, Cheryl Harrington swore she would never touch dough again. In fact, if she never baked again at all it was fine with her. The young freshman had worked with her family-owned bakery all her life. It was work. It was a chore. Not fun at all.

“You did what you were told by your family,” she says. “We were immigrants and making food was how we brought in money so that’s what you did. But as far as I was concerned that was not what educated people did. And I was going to college. I was through with it.”

But life has a way of throwing curves at the best of plans.

Harrington got her education and a great career. She married and raised a family and then found a wonderful therapeutic coping mechanism.

“I found the whirring of the blender soothing, working with flour relaxed me after a long day at work,” she explains.

Shortly after her son finished college, the family agreed to back Cheryl’s decision to open her own bakery.

I recently took a short trip to the Shortcake Bakery in Hyattsville, Md. It’s a cotton-candy pink building on the corner of Route 1 and Charles Armentrout Way (Armentrout was a Ward

4 councilman from 1961-1967 and later mayor until 1975).

These days, some of us may never have experienced the pleasure and wonder of the scents and creations of an authentic bakery.

Well, Cheryl Harrington, owner, baker and designer of Shortcake, is an angel of scents, wonder and smiles. This flour goddess bakes a decadent rum cake with enough of everything to be a proper rum cake—and it will have you coming back for more!

Harrington serves up as many smiles as she does her gingerbread cookies, key lime pie, full-bodied muffins and to-die-for fudge brownies.

The Shortcake Bakery is more than a pie and cake operation.

There is a varied menu, complete with such offerings as a spectacular spanakopita (spinach pie) and beef or chicken patties.

(Harrington says one railroad man regularly stops his train nearby to pick up a patty or two.) And that’s just one story she’ll share as you nibble your favorite scone, or quiche.

Harrington follows her Trinidadian roots, treating her customers as family. She’s been in the cotton-candy pink space for five years now, and she plans to keep serving up those delicious delicacies and infectious smiles for years to come.
