Ever since man was smart enough to save himself from the icy elements, he has been bold enough to throw himself right back into them. Winter plunges have been around almost as long as people have been willing to watch other people do anything life threatening. And traditionally in the U.S., that makes for quality fundraising opportunities.

The 11th Annual “Keep Winter Cold” Polar Bear Plunge is Chesapeake Climate Action Network’s biggest fundraising event, powering victories to move the region off of fossil fuels. Each year, activists, friends and families show their commitment to fighting climate change by jumping in the icy Potomac River at National Harbor.

This year, as the plunge turns eleven, CCAN aims to raise $90,000.

The event will start at 10:30 a.m. when tem-

peratures are expected to hover between 29 and 35 degrees. For most people, that’s not bikini-friendly weather. Unlike rollercoasters or motorcycle stunts, however, a cold winter’s dip is considered by most physicians to be a healthy thing.
