Sugoi Handmade Knits and Knots

Sugoi significa fantástico, incrível, ótimo ou maravilhoso. Esta foi a palavra utilizada por duas jovens japonesas para elogiar a antiga banca da Handmade Stuff e da S’tuff. Juntas tornaram-se a Sugoi Handmade Knits and Knots. Um projeto orgulhosamente português e portuense de design e produção artesanal de acessórios e roupa tricotada juntamente com bijuteria de nós.

O objectivo do projeto é resgatar técnicas manuais que se encontram em vias de extinção utilizando materiais de alta qualidade, permitindo que estas tenham grande longevidade.

Sugoi means fantastic, incredible, great or wonderful. This was the word used by two young Japanese women to praise the former Handmade Stuff and S’tuff stall. Together they became Sugoi Handmade Knits and Knots. A proudly Portuguese and Porto based project for the design and artisanal production of knitted accessories and clothing along with knotted jewelry.

The aim of the project is to rescue manual techniques that are on the verge of extinction using high quality materials, allowing them to have a long life.

A metodologia de trabalho para a criação das malhas começa pela criação do design: a escolha da peça a desenvolver, a que estação se destina e o fio que se aplica melhor ao efeito pretendido. Para cada peça é necessário uma amostra que irá auxiliar o cálculo preciso para a criação do modelo (nº de agulhas/malhas e nº de voltas/carreiras). Esta amostra deve ser lavada para perceber o encolhimento do fio. A fase seguinte é a de tentativa e erro até conseguir o primeiro pano com as medidas desejadas. Quando estão todas as alterações feitas escreve-se o modelo final com uma ilustração e indicações de todos os passos realizados para obter a peça. De seguida passa-se á realização da mesma. Começa-se pelas costas, seguido das frentes, mangas, bolsos e por fim remates e acabamentos como botões e fechos. Após todas as partes estarem tricotadas e passadas ou vaporizadas a ferro é necessário rematar as pontas e coser á mão as diferentes partes ou diretamente na máquina de tricotar. Para os remates manuais utilizo vários pontos em crochet, nem sempre necessários. O último passo é lavar a peça e após secar voltar a passar a ferro ou vaporizar e por fim coser a etiqueta da marca.

The creation of knitwear begins with the design: the choice of the garment to be developed, the season for which it is intended and the yarn that is best suited to the desired effect. For each garment, a sample is needed to help with the precise calculation for creating the pattern (number of needles/stitches and number of rounds). This sample should be washed to see how much the yarn will shrink. The next stage is trial and error until you get the fi rst cloth with the desired measurements.

When all the alterations have been made the final model is written with an illustration and indications of all the steps taken to obtain the garment. Then you move on to making the article. You start with the back, followed by the fronts, sleeves, pockets and finally finishing touches such as buttons and zippers. Once all the parts have been knitted and vaporized or ironed, you need to trim the ends and sew the different parts together by hand or directly on the knitting machine. For manual finishing I use several crochet stitches, which are not always necessary. The last step is to wash the garment, iron or vaporized it again after drying and then sew on the brand label.

Para iniciar o processo de tricotar à máquina é necessário, antes de mais, de uma máquina de tricotar. Nesta unidade de produção artesanal existem duas máquinas da marca Brother da década de 80, uma para fio mais fino e outra para material grosso. São máquinas vintage usadas que funcionam de forma analógica garantindo sustentabilidade. Para poder operar estas máquinas caseiras existem diversas ferramentas auxiliares como: as réguas que selecionam as agulhas a trabalhar na máquina; os pentes para estabilizar o início da malha; e os pesos que neles são pendurados; como também as punções para realizar aumentos, diminuições e remates. Existem outras ferramentas que ajudam na criação de uma peça como: as agulhas para rematar ou serzir, as agulhas de crochet para fazer o acabamento, tesoura, fita-métrica e alfinetes. Quando o processo não necessita de máquina, como para os gorros de lã, basta utilizar as agulhas circulares e as agulhas de duas pontas para as diminuições no topo. Quanto aos materiais utilizados escolho materiais 100% naturais e biodegradáveis como lã merino, lã virgem, angorá, algodão, linho e seda, como também misturas destas fibras. Por vezes utilizo deadstock de produção portuguesa de forma a contribuir para a redução de desperdício e aumentar a longevidade das peças.

To start the machine knitting process, you fi rst need a knitting machine. In this artisan production unit there are two Brother machines from the 1980s, one for thinner yarn and the other for thicker material. They are used analog vintage machines that guarantees sustainability. In order to operate these homemade machines there are various auxiliary tools such as: the rulers that select the needles to work on the machine; the combs to stabilize the beginning of the knit; and the weights that are hung from them; as well as the punches to make increases, decreases and finishes. There are other secondary tools that help in the creation of a knitted garment such as: needles for edging or sewing, crochet needles for finishing, scissors, tape and pins. When the process does not require a machine, such as for wool hats, simply use circular needles and double-pointed needles for the decreases at the top. As for the materials used, I choose 100% natural and biodegradable materials such as merino wool, virgin wool, angora, cotton, linen and silk, as well as mixtures of these fibers. I sometimes use Portuguese deadstock to help reduce waste and increase the longevity of the garments.

Para a criação de uma peça de bijuteria é feita uma pesquisa para determinar qual o nó e qual o tipo de cordão a utilizar, como também, grossura e cor. A pesquisa inicia-se sempre nos livros especializados em nós decorativos mas por vezes estende-se à internet. Após escolher o nó a utilizar são feitas amostras para compreender o processo de construção e o material necessário.

Quando se obtém o resultado final é escrito o modelo que indica qual o cordão, a quantidade, a técnica do nó e acessórios necessários. A construção do nó pode ser feita de duas formas: com ou sem uma base de cortiça auxiliada por alfinetes. As imagens apresentadas mostram o processo de criação do nó Pan Chang, que foi transformado em brincos de mola. Os seguintes exemplos necessitam apenas das mãos e de alicates utilizado na pulseira de nó de botão azul em baixo.

Pode também ser utilizada a técnica de macramé onde se trabalha a partir de um ponto fixo na vertical. Para além de alicates de pontas as outras ferramentas utilizadas podem ser: alicates de corte, para cortar cordão; isqueiro para queimar pontas, cola branca e água ou cola instantânea para fixar os nós. As peças que servem de estruturas aos nós, argolas, fechos, terminais, entre outros são sempre em aço inoxidável, quando possível com banho de ouro ou prata para garantir a qualidade e durabilidade das peças. Todas estas podem ser lavadas com água e sabão devido à combinação entre o cordão e materiais que não oxidam, garantido maior longevidade das peças.

The following examples require only the hands and pliers used in the blue button knot bracelet below. It can also be used macramé technique where you work from a fixed point vertically.

In addition to pliers, the other tools used can be: cutting pliers to cut the cord, a lighter to burn the ends, white glue and water or instant glue to fix the knots. The parts used to frame the knots, rings, clasps, terminals, etc. are always made of stainless steel, if possible with a gold or silver plating to guarantee the quality and durability of the pieces. All of them can be washed with soap and water due to the combination of cord and materials that do not oxidize, guaranteeing greater longevity of the pieces.
