While you’re
All of us who work here at the hospital want you to know that we only want you to feel better. You just might even make some new friends along the way! Well, I guess your own doctor has explained to you why you need to be in the hospital. First, you have to go through “admitting.” That’s where your parents and the hospital staff write down a bunch of stuff about you and why you are here. Then you get a bracelet with your name on it that you get to wear the whole time you are here. They like to keep things clean around the hospital, so you might have to use special soap and shampoo when you take a bath. Don’t worry about being lonely; your mom and dad can stay with you all the time! One thing is for sure: you won’t be bored! Hospitals have lots of fun things for kid patients. Just ask your nurse or child life specialist about activities that you might be able to do — they will have lots of ideas! If you think you might fall behind in school while you’re here, many hospitals have schoolrooms that you can attend. There might even be a teacher that can come to your room to help you. Just ask the nurse. Sometimes you will get special meals that are different than at home, but they are made to help you get better. If you’re having an operation, you might not be able to eat or drink for hours before. Just remember that it’s not because anyone has forgotten about you or anything; it’s just that eating or drinking can make you sick during the operation. Well, I hope I have answered some of the questions you may have been thinking about. If you have any other questions, just ask the nurse or doctor and they will be able to fill you in.

Pendant que tu Bonjour
les amis.
Les gens qui travaillent à l’hôpital sont tous très gentils et ils ont hâte que tu recouvres ta santé. Il est fort probable que tu rencontreras de nouveaux amis à l’hôpital. Ton médecin t’a expliqué pourquoi tu dois passer du temps ici. Maintenant, laisse-moi t’expliquer le reste. Quand tu entres à l’hôpital, tu passes d’abord par le bureau d’admission. Là, le personnel de l’hôpital pose un tas de questions à tes parents: ton nom, ton âge et la raison pour laquelle tu es à l’hôpital. Ensuite, on te donne un bracelet d’identification que tu dois porter pendant ton séjour ici. Ensuite, puisque la propreté est très importante à l’hôpital, il se peut qu’on te donne un savon et un shampooing spéciaux pour prendre un bain. Ta maman et ton papa peuvent venir te voir en tout temps; ne te fais pas de soucis à ce sujet. Une chose est certaine: tu n’auras pas le temps de t’ennuyer ici! On organise beaucoup d’activités amusantes pour les jeunes à l’hôpital. Tu n’as qu’à demander à ton médecin ou à ton infirmière; ce n’est pas les idées qui leur manquent. Dans plusieurs hôpitaux, il y a des salles de classe pour que tu ne prennes pas de retard à l’école. Il y a parfois même une enseignante qui viendra t’aider dans ta chambre. Tu peux demander à ton infirmière. Il est possible que les repas à l’hôpital soient différents de ceux que ta maman ou ton papa prépare. Rassure toi, on prépare ces repas pour t’aider à retrouver la santé. Si tu dois subir une opération, il ne faut ni manger ni boire pendant quelques heures auparavant. Ne pense surtout pas qu’on t’a oublié. C’est que manger ou boire peuvent te rendre malade pendant l’opération. Bon, j’espère que j’ai su répondre à quelques-unes de tes questions. Si tu en as d’autres, pose-les à ton médecin ou à ton infirmière. Ils se feront un plaisir d’y répondre.

My Body is My Own Have you ever heard a little voice inside your head telling you, “This doesn’t feel right,” or “I wonder what I should do?” or “This is fun!”? Have you ever had a feeling right down in the pit of your stomach — sometimes called a “gut feeling” — telling you whether you feel good or bad about a certain situation? Well, sometimes we ignore these feelings, these little voices, because we doubt them, or because we’re too scared to tell anyone about them.
trust yourself – you are trustworthy It’s really okay to listen to these feelings and trust them. Your insides don’t lie! Did you know that you have certain rights as a kid, rights which no one should ever even dream of taking away from you? These rights are here to protect you and keep you safe. But if you ever feel funny about something — like when things just don’t seem right to you — but you’re too scared to say anything, try thinking of a person that you know who you really, really trust. This person could be a teacher, a babysitter, your mom or dad, a friend’s mom or dad, an aunt, an uncle, your doctor — anyone that you feel totally safe with. It’s okay to talk about stuff with them. They really do care about you and will trust your gut feelings. And if, for whatever reason, they don’t, then go to the next person on your list until you find someone who does! Honour your feelings — learn to trust them. Take time to read the following page and learn what some of your rights are. Every one of you is special, and you deserve to have every one of these needs met.

What are you
feeling
today? If you made a list of all of the different types of feelings you felt today, how many do you think you’d come up with — happy, angry, silly, scared, excited, lonely, joyful...? There are just so many different types that, sometimes, we don’t even know how or what we are feeling. All feelings, whether pleasant or difficult, are normal — in fact, it is very important that we listen to these feelings because, for whatever reason, they are trying to tell us a very important message. Expressing your feelings can be hard to do. One way that you can do this is by drawing how or what you feel. Try drawing what you’re feeling right now. Or, try drawing a whole bunch of different feelings — as many as you can think of. If you want to, you can share your drawings with someone you trust.

Bath Time! Keeping your furry puppy-friend clean is a very important step in keeping him healthy and happy. Here are some tips on how to bathe your best friend:
• Have the area where you will wash and dry him — as well as the equipment you need — ready beforehand. He may try to get away from you during bathing! • Dogs only need bathing when they are dirty or if your veterinarian says so. • Bathe your dog outdoors in warm weather. This keeps him from getting a chill, and it’s a lot less messy! • Have a tub half filled with warm water — not too warm, though. • Use a mild shampoo (such as baby shampoo), or dog shampoo, or one your vet recommended. Remember to always read the instructions carefully. • Have an old, clean towel ready to dry him. Depending on the breed, you may want to use a hair-dryer too. • Gently lift your dog into the water. Do not attempt to lift the dog if he is too heavy; get someone to help you. • Use a clean jug to pour the warm water over your dog from the back of his neck downwards, doing his head last. • Start by applying the shampoo to his body and legs. • Rub the shampoo well into his coat. • Shampoo his head last, paying special care to ensure no shampoo gets into his eyes. • Rinse the shampoo by pouring warm water onto his coat — be sure you have enough! • Your dog will probably shake himself all over. This will remove most of the water from his coat. Use the towel to dry off the remaining water. • You can complete the drying by using the hair-dryer on a low temperature setting and using a brush to speed up the drying process considerably.

À la ferme avec Sam et Sandy Si on allait faire un tour à la ferme, aujourd’hui?
Sam et Sandy s’amusent toujours beaucoup quand ils sont à la ferme, mais ils font bien attention à ne pas se faire mal. Il y a dans une ferme des tas d’objets, de machines et d’endroits qui sont dangereux si on ne fait pas attention. C’est pour ça qu’il ne faut pas toucher ni s’aventurer sans être accompagné d’un adulte. Avant de faire quelque chose ou d’aller quelque part, il faut toujours prévenir un adulte.

uel genre de choses va-t-on trouver? Voyons…Sam et Sandy aperçoivent une grange en bois rouge, avec un nid en haut dans la charpente; des vaches noires et blanches qui broutent dans le champ, là-bas; un groupe de poules qui caquètent en picorant leur grain dans le poulailler; une étendue infinie de champs où les épis s’inclinent sous le vent; des bottes de foin, dans l’autre champ, là-bas; un tracteur garé dans la cour, devant; une salle de traite juste derrière la maison… plein de choses intéressantes! Même si, toi, tu ne vis pas dans une ferme, nous sommes entourés par l’agriculture et elle joue un rôle très important. Nous comptons sur l’agriculture pour nous fournir nos aliments, nos vêtements et d’autres choses que nous utilisons tous les jours. Les agriculteurs sont nos amis. Ils savent comment transformer les récoltes et les animaux en produits que nous pouvons utiliser. C’est important. Ils font de gros efforts pour protéger le sol et l’eau, afin que les plantes et les animaux puissent devenir grands, sains et forts.

Well, did you know that there are 5 different kinds of fire trucks, all designed for battling certain types of blazes? There’s a Pumper Truck, which can pump 1,250 gallons of water every minute — that equals 15,000 glasses of water! A Heavy Duty Rescue Truck carries tools to help get people out of car wrecks or other places where they may be stuck. A Yellow Aerial Ladder Truck carries ladders & tools that allow firefighters to reach and rescue people who may be trapped inside. A Quint Truck does the work of both a pumper & ladder truck. Quint means “5” — this truck has ground ladders, an aerial ladder, a pump, water tank, and hose. And finally, a Tiller Truck is used for fires that rage in high up places — about the height of a ten-storey high-rise. This truck has 2 steering wheels and 2 drivers. The driver in the back controls the rear wheels of the truck, which allows this extremely long truck to go around corners easily.
