ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Every Brilliant Thing! I love this play. To me it is everything that is wonderful about theatre: a group of people coming together for a live event that is ephemeral and a little bit different every night. A story that can only be told with the help of the audience. This story speaks of a child’s hope, optimism, and love for his mother. I find its message of looking for glimmers of brightness during hard times so touching. How we can find ways to support one another and how something as simple as a list of “brilliant things” can help us through.
With all of our Highwire programming, we’re looking to provide audiences with an opportunity to connect with performers and text in a unique way. This time last year, John Ullyatt was terrorizing children as the formidable Miss Trunchbull in our wonderfully imaginative production of Matilda. And now here he is in a simple and intimate setting. It is an incredible chance to see the versatility and skill of this fantastic local performer. Our sincere thanks to John, director David Horak, and the entire Edmonton-based team of theatre artists who have put this beautiful production together. And thanks to you, our audience, for taking a chance on something a little out of the ordinary, and wonderfully theatrical. Sincerely,

Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole. DIRECTOR’S Notes Lists. I’ve always been terrible at them. I’ve always felt that if I write a list, I’m somehow committing to something that I just won’t be able to live up to. Lists often seemed to be a menu of unattainable intentions. And this has always stressed me out. Making the list. Looking at other people’s lists. Crossing things off the list. And it never seemed worth it to start one. If I wasn’t going to be able to complete it, why start? Some people in my life are great at making lists and I’ve secretly admired the ability to crunch down a succinct list of tasks, or favourite things, or a list of desires. And I do love a great year end list of “bests.” Top ten albums of the decade. Or “Best moments of 2019.” These give you something to complain about. Or agree with. But usually writing a list stresses me out. What is amazing about the list that gets created in this play is that it is a lifeline. It’s a list that is actively trying to save someone. It offers a version of a better world. It’s a list that reaches out to lift you up. This list literally asks you to lift your hand up for a high five. And this has changed how I see lists. A friend of mine always starts a “to do” list with the task of “Start a List.” Perfect. Just by starting the list you’ve already started to move forward. You can cross that first thing right off as soon as you write it down. So. Start that list. It will move you forward. And who knows. It might just be worth it. – David Horak

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean But that halcyon summer, the talk all up and down Vanier Park was of a new smash hit – Daryl Cloran’s breathless mashup of the English language’s greatest dramatist, Shakespeare, with the music of the Beatles, the most popular band in rock history. Many thought the idea was absurd at best. But the show sold out immediately, filling the massive 729 seat theatre. It was held-over and that run sold out as well. Vindication by box office? It was far more than that. The critics immediately came around to recognizing how Cloran and company had turned the funny, silly Bardic crowd-pleaser into a whole new method of expression – “a perfect romantic and spiritual journey.” The Globe and Mail called it “a joy,” and “the feel-good Shakespeare musical of summer.” That production of As You Like It opens next on the Shoctor stage of the Citadel. As You Like It wasn’t the first juke box musical from the team of Cloran and Bard on the Beach Artistic Director, Christopher Gaze. In 2015, Cloran had “ripped out a bunch of the Bard’s text and added some 20’s jazz songs” and created a hit out of Love’s Labour’s Lost. Gaze wanted to do the same thing with As You Like It and, vaguely, thought that maybe Beatles music could be pounded into shape to fit. Inquired the director, “Can we afford the Beatles?” Replied Gaze, “I dunno. Let’s give it a try.” To their surprise, the Beatles (or more correctly, Sony, – the right’s holders) came on board. “I went away and thought about it,” says the Citadel’s current Artistic Director, and the more he thought – the more excited he became. “As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s most musical plays. It’s a play about love

AS YOU LIKE IT – not only between Orlando and Rosalind but the love of father and daughter and the love of the old servant, Adam. All You Need Is Love began to run through my head.” Of course, this being Shakespeare there are the usual Bardic elements of gender swapping, secret notes, lusty shepherds and unrequited love. In the 1960’s, Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach became a kind of hippie hub for counter culture. The beach could be the royal court where the story begins – where the destinedto-be-lovers, Rosalind and Orlando, meet at a wrestling match. Rosalind is banished from the court by her Uncle and flees to the Forest of Arden to where Orlando, shortly thereafter, also decamps. The similarities between the Beatles’ music and Shakespeare’s 417 year old entertainment did not escape Cloran. “I began to think that if you’re going to run anywhere from Vancouver you’d go to ‘the wild Okanagan.’” (That phrase brought a laugh from the Vancouver audience each time it was mentioned – an unexpected “gift that kept on giving,” to the director.)

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean The coming together of the two lovers and the eventual union of the various warring royal factions in the play spoke of a maturing of the characters. Cloran had been a great fan of the Beatles in his youth (there was a Beatles poster on the wall of his bedroom). “Their early songs are all naive and innocent – like I Want to Hold Your Hand. In the play, when the characters run to the Forest of Arden, they meet philosophers and free thinkers, – characters like the beat poet/philosopher Jaques (who gets the big speech, ‘All the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players...’). That mirrors the Beatles’ own experiences. As they progressed their music became more philosophical and spiritual.” And then there’s the wrestling. The sport plays a big part at the beginning of the play – not only does it throw Rosalind and Orlando together – it goes a long way in developing their relationship. Before the coming of the WWF, there was the Vancouver-based National Wrestling Alliance. It attracted a large and rowdy audience and it’s TV arm, Big Time Wrestling, was seen all over Canada. “We were certainly able to build a story around that,” recounts Cloran. The company took it very seriously, hiring fight director (and choreographer) Jonathan Purvis to vigorously (and hilariously) choreograph the fighting segments. In fact, patrons in Vancouver (and in January’s subsequent successful remount in Winnipeg), were exhorted to come early to catch the full-on ringside wrestling show before the actual play begins. Observes Cloran, “I’m a big believer that if you’re going to stage something that has been around for a long time we need to ask, ‘What is it going to say to contemporary audiences?’”

MUSIC HAD TO CONTINUE THE PLOT “ THE AND THE CHARACTER’S DRIVES AND OBJECTIVES. ” But beyond all the grunt n’ groan what, for the director, is the basis of the play? “It’s the love story and the philosophy throughout – how all we really need is love and for me the best way to approach that – was through song.” And in this cheerful and humorous production, as one wag pointed out, the show succeeds in that “with the help of a few half nelsons and flying mares.”
“My idea was to make the songs move the production along. I didn’t want everything to stop while a character sings out to the audience. The music had to continue the plot and the character’s drives and objectives. To my surprise, many of them were clear fits from the start.” In the wrestling match where Orlando is fighting, Rosalind finds herself attracted to the muscular young stranger. Touchstone, the jester pops up and sings helpfully, She Loves You, and the song is carried throughout the match. The jester goes all unhinged to sing Helter Skelter while an exiled Lord woefully warbles, While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Estranged cousins Rosalind and Celia bond to We Can Work It Out. In the original text the beat poet Jacques declaims, “A fool? A fool! I’ve met a fool in the forest...” and in Cloran’s version goes right into singing, The Fool on the Hill. A sad, abandoned Rosalind, disguised

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean as Ganymede (a man) sitting alone in the forest brings a fresh new resonance to the Beatles classic song, You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away. Cloran: “You can see how some of the songs fit perfectly.” The coherence of the production owes much to Music Director Ben Elliott. Like the Citadel’s earlier production of Once, Cloran has cast his play with actors who also play instruments. “Probably the most complex casting I’ve ever undertaken,” the director admits. “They have to be excellent Shakespearean actors but great singers, dancers and instrumentalists as well. Elliott has a real skill in orchestrating the songs making the instrumentation fit our particular needs, massaging the music to fit seamlessly into the final production.” One side-effect of Cloran’s gleeful shredding about half of Shakespeare’s classic iambic pentameter and the addition of the Beatles’ celebratory music, is what a number of critics have pointed out is “probably the clearest version of Shakespeare you will ever see.” Echoes Christoper Gaze, “It’s an inspired gateway into the magic of Shakespeare.” Another source of clear satisfaction to the director can be found in a word often used by critics and audiences in describing his dazzling gallimaufry – “joyous.” Says Cloran, “Given the climate we’re in – I designed As You Like It to be a night of joy at the theatre. It’s nice to have a couple of hours that is about love and community and joy.” As You Like It will play in the Shoctor Theatre beginning February 15th. Here comes the sun.
