Hello from the “New Guy!” I am so excited to say I am the new Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre.

It is a dream come true. I love live theatre. I always have. I’ve dedicated my life to it, because there’s nothing like it. We come together for an ephemeral moment that can never be recreated in exactly the same way. We share space – both physical and emotional. We cry together, we laugh together, we feel together. Theatre teaches us empathy – to open ourselves to the understanding of what others may be facing. And through this experience, we become part of a community. Together, we imagine. We grow. We soar.

This season of programming is a real gift to all of us from the Citadel’s previous Artistic Director, Bob Baker. This is Bob’s final season of programming for the Citadel, and he chose a season full of incredible productions and artists. It is easy for me to say, I recommend every show! To me, this season celebrates everything that is great about theatre – innovation, intelligence and imagination. I am so proud that the Citadel is producing the Canadian Premiere of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – Edmonton audiences are incredibly fortunate to see this new production of this Tony Award Winning script packed full of brains and heart. We have fantastic musicals (Million Dollar Quartet and Crazy for You), innovative new Canadian scripts (Bittergirl and Fortune Falls), and an insightful and challenging Pulitzer Prize Winning Drama (Disgraced). I love the creative magic of Peter and the Starcatcher – the story is created as much by the imagination of the audience as it is by the ingenuity of the acting ensemble. Plus – a gorgeous new adaptation of a cherished classic (Sense and Sensibility). And I haven’t even mentioned our beloved holiday production of A Christmas Carol or our exciting Beyond the Stage series. There truly is something for everyone here at the Citadel this season!

I have just moved to Edmonton with my wife, Holly, and our two young sons – Liam (who is 8) and Jack (who is 4). We are so excited to become part of this city. I believe very much in community – it is our job at the Citadel to program work that speaks to this community, which asks questions that are important to this community, and which features our diverse community on stage. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I would love to hear from you about why the Citadel is important to you, to hear about your favourite Citadel productions, or to hear your thoughts on the ways the Citadel could move boldly forward. Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community. As such, we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club is such a program – one that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas.

On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation from one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for an informative talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew.

Prior to Students Club performances, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on projection design from Matt Schuurman or Brent Felzien, two Edmonton-based projection experts. Through this workshop the students were introduced to the elements of still and video projection which are being utilized in this production. They now have a better understanding of how designers build narratives and spectacle through choreographed multimedia.

When The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time previously opened in London’s West End, it metaphorically blew the roof off the theatre. (Actually - during the run in London’s Apollo Theatre, the roof did cave in.)

Based on Mark Haddon’s 2003 book, Simon Stephens’ play takes us deep into the mind of Christopher, a teenage boy whose nameless condition is likely an autism-spectrum disorder. He has problems coping with everyday life but certain of his faculties are preternaturally heightened. He is also an amateur detective (his interest in Sherlock Holmes dictates the Sherlockian sounding title of the play) and a mathematical genius.

So be prepared tonight to find yourself deeply immersed in his world which suddenly and unexpectedly becomes unhinged, as he attempts to process broken threads of thought and emotion. Christopher leaves his home and embarks on an ill-advised trip to London to visit his mother. In the ensuing journey, with its “jack-knife turns, maps, trains, flashing lights and enveloping grid,” he tries to make sense of the alien world around him.

The Citadel co-production with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre will feature as Christopher the rising young actor Edmund Stapleton who comes from Paradise – literally, Paradise being a small town just outside St. John’s, NL. He attended the U of A where, against considerable competition, he won the Hnatyshyn Foundation award. He observed at the time, “I have a fire and a passion to tell stories and to bring the Truth to those who seek it. (I am ready to be)... the ferryman transporting an audience to another world where

they may see themselves in a new light and will return to this world changed and enlightened.”

A better description of the aims of The Curious Incident of the Dog... would be hard to imagine. Christopher and his off-kilter world, both interior and exterior, will be created by the brilliant young Winnipeg director Heidi Malazdrewich.

On one momentous day, December 4, 1956, four of rock’s greatest stars met by accident in the Memphis-based Sun Studios, a recording studio opened by visionary producer Sam Phillips. The four were Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash.

All were at the very beginning of their careers. The jukebox musical, Million Dollar Quartet, was inspired by that event. The show with its crowd-pleasing energy and raw musical exuberance was a worldwide hit and toured extensively. Million Dollar Quartet may play fast and loose with the actual event but the result, with songs like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Hound Dog,” rocks. Three weeks after Christmas, we get a late present – as the Pulitzer Prize winning drama called Disgraced opens on the mainstage. Taut, engrossing and powerful, Disgraced is another of those shows that was performed in a number of smaller venues while on an everbuilding arc that finally took it to Broadway and international acclaim.

It centres on a dinner party with four people of different backgrounds.

Their lively discussion turns to comment on politics, racial prejudice and religion and the heat is quickly turned up.

You will love Crazy For You. Why not? Most everyone who has seen it tends to gush. We all know the story of Peter Pan – the boy who wouldn’t grow up. But did you know there is a captivating back-story of how Peter found himself battling pirates, protecting mermaids and flying through the air? It’s called Peter and the Starcatcher and was a recent hit on Broadway. The show is spectacular but exploits the ancient theatrical trope of a bunch of tattered players who get together and, with the help of a few found props – ropes, ladders, toy boats, household appliances and the like – create a detailed fantasy world. The show also demands that audiences use their imagination to unfold a compelling world of adventure while generating unending laughs. It takes full advantage of theatre space – not just on the stage but high above it as well. The cunningly creative James MacDonald (Equus, A Few Good Men, Clybourne Park) will direct this family entertainment.

ace Austen adapter Tom Wood with Baker as director. Those three combustible elements will join forces again for Sense and Sensibility. Austen wrote the book in 1795 when she was but 19 years old. Even then, she demonstrated the maturity and perception that was to make her one of the most read authors in the English speaking world. Pride and Prejudice amply demonstrated how very theatrical the works of Jane Austen can be and promises much anticipation for this new production.

Now that’s the season and it’s certainly a crowd pleaser. But, as the man on the old television commercials used to say, “...but wait.

There are a number of add-ons that are not part of the regular season but promise compelling theatre. Take Bittergirl – the musical. The impressively adaptable tale was first written as a book by authors Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore. It followed the separate tales of two Canadian women and their journeys from rose dappled first love to darkest devastation as they were unceremoniously dumped by their men. The two were joined by Annabel Fitzsimmons, another dumpee, to turn the book into a run-away hit as a comic play. The trio added a juke-box full of (mostly) girl-based doo-wop 50’s hits (“Be My Baby”/”Where Did Our Love Go?”) to run an ironic counterpoint to the “heartbreakingly funny” show – which proved to be theatrical catnip to Toronto, New York and Charlottetown audiences.

It opens October 4.

Jonathan Christenson and (designer) Bretta Gerecke’s Catalyst Theatre, now firmly a member of the Citadel family, is presenting a new production in January called Fortune Falls. The list of major hits spawned by this innovative company (Frankenstein/Nevermore/ Hunchback/Vigilante) will probably generate enough buzz to make this new presentation a must-see. The show is set in an Ontario small town that is devastated when the American parent company of the local chocolate manufacturer pulls the plug on the branch. For many years, the factory has been the sole employer in the area. Christenson, who writes the words, music and book for all his productions, has said the show considers “the way we as Canadians piggyback on the American dream” and the pain that generates when the dream evaporates.

And yes, the enduring Citadel seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol will be back for yet another year. For a production that began in 1999 and designed for a life about as long as a Christmas candle, A Christmas Carol goes on and on enchanting theatregoers and, indeed, in each of the last two years has attracted more patrons than ever before.

Add to that the burgeoning use of The Club for everything from one-person shows to large cast cabarets, and you have a prolific season fit for the Citadel, the vibrant beating heart of a city in the act of reinventing itself.

Terri Cherniack Mrs. Alexander

In a career that has spanned more than 35 years, Terri has appeared at theatres across the country from Vancouver to Halifax. At the Citadel Theatre, she has played Mrs. Stockmann in the NAC/Citadel co-production of An Enemy of the People, directed by Marti Maraden. For the last two decades, Terri has worked in and travelled from her home base of Winnipeg.

There she has played many major roles at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Shakespeare in the Ruins, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, and Theatre Projects, as well as appearing in film and television projects. Terri is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.

David Keeley Ed Boone

David is a veteran theatre, television and film actor. Theatre credits include Hamlet, As You Like It, Oliver! and True Love Lies (Citadel); Light in the Piazza (Theatre Calgary, Critter Nomination); The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (Royal MTC); Les Miserables (WCT). For Mirvish in Toronto, David has performed in Rock of Ages, Billy Elliot and Mamma Mia, which lead to him being cast in the original Broadway production.

David has also spent 8 seasons at The Stratford Festival, appearing in Richard III, Oklahoma, and Coriolanus among others. He won a Dora Award for his portrayal of Officer Lockstock in CanStage’s production of Urinetown. Television and Film credits include American Gothic, Murdoch Mysteries, Copper, Saving Hope, Listener, Rookie Blue, The Manchurian Candidate and the upcoming The JonBenét Story.

Beverly Ndukwu is from Winnipeg and is ecstatic to be making her debut on the Citadel stage. Previous credits include, Danny King of the Basement (MTYP). Robb has been an actor/director in Canada for the past 36 years. He has worked in every region of the country in over 170 productions. At the Citadel, he last performed in How I Got That Story and last directed Guys and Dolls. Favourite roles include Joe Pitt in Angels in America, Billy Bishop, Seymore in Little Shop of Horrors, Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees, Bob Cratchit, Amos in Chicago, Jacob Mercer in A Salt Water Moon, William Lyon MacKenzie and others in 1837: The Farmers’ Revolt and Paper Wheat. Robb was the Associate Artistic Director at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre for the last 13 years.

Cherissa Richards Siobhan

Cherissa is thrilled to be acting at the Citadel for the first time. She is a recent transplant from Toronto to Winnipeg.

Most recently she performed as Queen Elizabeth in WPG’s Shakespeare in the Ruins’ Richard III. Some acting credits include Carousel Theatre and Black Theatre Workshop’s productions of The Power of Harriet T; Tough Case (MTYP); Eternal Hydra (Touchstone Theatre) and spent two seasons as an actor at The Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. You can also see Cherissa every Christmas on screen as Dr. Shirazi in the Hallmark movie, The Christmas Heart. This winter, she will be assistant directing MTYP’s Jungle Book. Cherissa has studied at NTS and is a theatre grad from the University of Winnipeg and an MFA graduate of York University.

Hailing from Toronto, Jamie is Artistic Director of the Guild Festival Theatre, runs the Mentor & Apprentice Program for Obsidian Theatre, and teaches Acting at York University where he holds a Master’s Degree in Theatre Directing and Education. Select acting credits include four seasons with the Stratford Festival of Canada, the title role in Richard III (Metachroma Theatre, META Award Nomination); Gas Girls (New Harlem Productions, Dora Award Nomination); Angels in America Parts 1 & 2 (Winnipeg Jewish Theatre); West Indian Diary (Ground Zero Productions); Romeo & Juliet (Canadian Stage); Medea (Mirvish/MTC). Edmund Stapleton Christopher Boone

Edmund is a Newfoundland actor currently based in Toronto.

He holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Alberta, a BA in English and Philosophy from Memorial University and was the recipient of the 2012 Hnatyshyn Foundation Developing Artist Grant for English Theatre.

John Ullyatt Roger Shears

Last season, John appeared in Alice Through the Looking-Glass.

He has appeared in memorable Citadel productions including Monty Python’s Spamalot, Private Lives, Death of a Salesman, The Rocky Horror Show, Billy Bishop Goes to War, Cabaret, I Am My Own Wife, and The Mystery of Irma Vep. He was most recently at the Fringe directing and acting in We Were Dancing, and Puttin’ on the Ritz at the Belfry Theatre. John is a founding member of Firefly Theatre – Edmonton’s circus theatre, with whom he created and performed in Craniatrium, Duck Duck Bang and Primordial Blues.

He is also a notable street theatre artist whose works include, most recently, The Giant Magic 8 Ball, and The Human Fountain which has been all across Canada, Ireland and Japan.

Stephanie is a graduate from the BFA professional Acting Program at the U of A. Recent projects include The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe for Teatro la Quindicina, and Burning Bluebeard for Edmonton Actors Theatre. Other local companies she has worked with include Theatre Network, Northern Light Theatre, Workshop West, Free Will Players, Phoenix Theatre, Citadel Theatre and Mayfield. Across Canada Stephanie has worked at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, Regina’s Globe Theatre, Saskatoon’s Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, and ATP and Theatre Calgary. Rosie Campbell Sandy

Rosie is a 12 week-old Golden Retriever puppy. This will be her first stage role. Her favourite activities include chewing, playing and eating. Rosie is very excited to be working with The Citadel Theatre and hopes to stay humble in her new found fame.

She was one of two girls in a litter of ten. Her personality is considered spunky and brave. She was considered to be “a real showstopper” in the looks department! She is training to become a wellness dog for CAAWLS where she hopes to bring much joy and happiness to those who need it.

Heidi Malazdrewich is a Winnipeg based director. Past credits include The Myth of the Ostrich (RMTC); The Secret Annex (RMTCWorld Premiere); The New Canadian Kid (MTYP); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (MBA/RMTC); The Darling Family (Broken Still Productions); The Apiarist (Wholehearted Productions); Perfect Pie (University of Calgary); and The Princess and the Pea (The Little Opera Company). Heidi was the Director-in-Residence at Rainbow Stage for the 2015 Season. She has taught theatre at both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.

She holds an MFA in directing from the University of Calgary.

T. Erin Gruber

Set, Costume & Lighting Designer T. Erin Gruber is an independent theatre designer with experience in set, lighting, costume and projected media design. She is a graduate with distinction of the University of Alberta and works across the country in theatres of all shapes and sizes. She is a founding member of the ShowStages video collective, a group that strives to question and expand the boundaries of projected media’s role in theatre (www.showstages.com). Joel Adria

Projection Designer Joel is a freelance multimedia designer and technician based in Alberta. Recent theatrical projects include Cockroach (Alberta Theatre Projects); The Little Mermaid (SCA Fine Arts); A Little Too Cozy (Banff Centre/Against the Grain); Mary Poppins (Globe Theatre); Category E (The Maggie Tree); Helen Lawrence (Canadian Stage); Bears (Pyretic Productions); and Tulugak (NAC). Other projects include stage design for Ignite (Edmonton Economic Development); Flora: Digital Greenhouse (Nuit Blanche Edmonton); and video work for corporate clients including TED Conferences and Fountain Tire. Joel is the faculty Projection Technologist at Banff Centre, and is a co-founder of ShowStages collective. He is alumnus of the University of Alberta’s Technical Theatre program. Elijah Lindenberger Sound Designer

Elijah is an accomplished scenic carpenter, technical director and sound and video designer. His work is motivated by his fascination with the relationship between performance, live sound and video creation. He is currently the head of the video department at the Citadel Theatre. Recent production credits include Video Programmer for Evangeline, BOOM, Avenue Q and Playing with Fire. He was also Technical Director and Co-Production Designer for Edmonton’s Ignite Festival (2015) and Scenic Carpenter for Category E (Maggie Tree). As a founding member of the ShowStages collective, Elijah strives to further the integration of interactive performance technology in Canadian theatre. He hopes you enjoy the show, and the opportunity to experience life through a new perspective.

Linda Garneau Movement Designer

Linda is a choreographer, educator, and student with an MA in Dance Studies from York University. Linda is the Artistic Director of the Helix Dance Project, whose works include The Waiting Room, Rain, Unearth, and Integration. Theatre credits include three seasons with The Shaw Festival, as well as productions for The National Arts Centre, Rainbow Stage, Tarragon Theatre Company, Talk Is Free, Sheridan Theatre and Drayton Entertainment. Other credits include the Opening Ceremony for the Pan Am Games (Guadalajara), Juno and Gemini Awards, and repeat guest choreographer for Stars on Ice. Linda continues to enjoy freelance choreography, teaching both at home and abroad, and is a faculty member at Sheridan College.

Janine Waddell Fight Director

Janine Waddell is an internationally certified Advanced Actor Combatant and sits on the Board of Directors for Fight Directors Canada. She is also a graduate of the Grant MacEwan Theatre Arts program. Select film and stage choreography credits include Plight: The Superhero Rock Opera (Group of Rogues); Pains of Youth (Studio Theatre); Swordplay: the Musical (ACME Theatre Company); and Days of Wine and Roses (Trunk Theatre). Other theatrical credits include Kill Shakespeare (Thou Art Here); McCrackin 2 (Accidental Humour); Albertine in Five Times (Walterdale Playhouse); and Miss Julie (50% Fruit Productions).

When not choreographing violence or teaching it at the Citadel’s Foote Theatre School, Janine can be found with her four wonderful children. She would like to give special thanks to her partner in life both on and off the stage.

David Ley Dialect Coach

David holds an MFA in performance from York University. He is a Professor in the Drama Department at the University of Alberta where he teaches Voice and Speech, Dialects, and Acting. He spent ten seasons as a Voice Coach at Canada’s Stratford Festival and continues to be a regular instructor in Stratford’s Birmingham Conservatory. He has done numerous feature newspaper interviews commenting on dialects and vocal performance and has been featured in two CBC documentaries on Canadian speech. His “Three minutes to a Proper British Dialect” video has been seen over a million times on YouTube.

Matthew Skopyk Composer

Matthew Skopyk is an Edmonton based Sound Designer and Composer. Recent Design/Composition credits include Romeo & Juliet (Freewill Shakespeare Festival); Or The Whale (Wishbone Theatre); Vigilante (Catalyst Theatre/Citadel); Playing With Fire: The Theo Fleury Story (Citadel Theatre/Persephone Theatre/ Alberta Theatre Projects); ENRON (National Arts Centre); Whisper (Studio Theatre/Catalyst Theatre); Michelle et Ti Jean and Palace of the End (Theatre Network); Titus Andronicus, As You Like It, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III, Twelfth Night and Othello (Freewill Shakespeare Festival). Matthew also currently resides as the Sound Supervisor for the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta.

Cheyenne Sykes is a New York based multi-disciplinary designer, practicing in both the States and Canada. Most recently she was the Nikos Stage Master Electrician at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. This past fall she served as an intern for designer Justin Townsend. Mike is very excited to be working with the Citadel for the first time. Apprentice Stage Manager Lore is a graduate from the BFA Stage Management program at the U of A. Originally from Kelowna BC, Lore has enjoyed the amazing theatre being created here in Edmonton.
