Message From The

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to The Color Purple! It is rare that a story can be so poignant and filled with humanity that it is able to resonate through many different artistic mediums. The Color Purple has done just that, winning major awards as a book, a film, and a musical – because at its heart is Celie, an inspiring young woman, able to overcome the immense obstacles in her path. While the story is dramatic and challenging, it is ultimately incredibly hopeful. Celie’s journey of self-discovery and learning to love herself is truly inspiring. And presented as a musical, the story is lifted by gorgeous, soul-stirring music, and 16 incredible voices.

It is an honour to welcome director Kimberley Rampersad back to the Citadel. Kimberley was the choreographer of last season’s production of Matilda and is a true theatrical force. Kimberley, and this incredible cast and creative team have built a beautiful, heartfelt production that we are so proud to share with you. Thanks to our friends at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre for their partnership – this production heads to Winnipeg after the run here at the Citadel. And thanks very much to you, our audience, for supporting live theatre in Edmonton, and for being here to kick off our new season with us. We hope you’ll join us throughout the season for more inspirational characters and stories. Sincerely, PS – If you like musicals, you’ll definitely want to join us in November for the U.K. smash hit, Six. The Citadel is the only theatre in Canada you can see Six at before it heads to Broadway in early 2020! Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory

and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. 16 CITADEL THEATRE 2019/20 SEASON

STUDENTS CLUB The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of The Color Purple, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Mukonzi Musyoki. John Mukonzi Musyoki is a poet, playwright, theatre academic, director, and dramaturg. He is about to commence his PhD from the University of Alberta in Performance Studies this September. Mukonzi graduated from Kenyatta University in Kenya on July 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Linguistics and Literature. He later went on to do his Masters in the University of Alberta specializing in Post-colonial African Theatre. Musyoki has been in Canada for three years and has worked as a director, dramaturg, and a researcher for Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre, Fringe Theatre, Timms Centre Studio Theatre, MAA and PAA Theatre, and the University of Alberta Drama Department. Mukonzi is very invested in the story of The Color Purple and he’s excited Mukonzi Musyoki to be a part of the team through dramaturgy and educational outreach. Through this interactive workshop, the students learned how actors use dramaturgical research to build characters. This worked to navigate the idea of “cultural inheritance” and better understand the story of developing resilience to pain through solidarity with community.

For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact Eden Edwards at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

DIRECTOR’S Notes

Having the opportunity

to connect with you, our audience, allows me to reflect upon what I thought this play may be and what it has grown into. We navigate an empty field with Celie. We stoop with her as she weeds out poverty, patriarchy, normalized violence, and watch as she attempts to plant seeds of agency, acceptance, and forgiveness. Celie gathers these blossoms from the richest soils fertilized by the Ancestors, tilled by Nettie, Sofia, and Shug, and watered by her own tears. She creates a bouquet of Self, of the Divine, manifest as Nature. The Color Purple is as the creation of theatre – the sum of the parts. I offer my gratitude to Ms. Alice Walker for writing the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel; the gardeners who tend this play both on and off the stage; and particularly to the actors – the most splendid bouquet to behold. – Kimberley Rampersad

26 CITADEL THEATRE 2019/20 SEASON

Notes From The

DRAMATURG

The Color Purple is a story

of resilience and triumph. First published as an epistolary novel by Alice Walker in 1982, it was written as a series of letters by Celie (an African-American woman). Some of the letters are addressed to God and others to her sister (Nettie), who also writes Celie. Set in the American South, the story is told through the eyes of Celie living in a world where gender oppression is intrinsically tied to the racial and economic difficulties faced by Black people. In 1985, the novel was adapted into a film (entitled The Color Purple) directed by Steven Spielberg. The musical going by the same name opened in September 2004 at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre and moved to Broadway in December 2005. The musical has been praised for its portrayal of the black folk idiom and execution of the cardinal character relationships. The story in its different renditions is a mainstay for Womanism. Walker defines Womanism as the conception of feminists of colour whereby we see “women who love their fellow women and are concerned with the salvation of the entire race (not just women), and women who love to sing and dance.” – Mukonzi Musyoki

THE COLOR PURPLE 29

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean The setting may be recognizable from many movies or Friday nights in front of the TV but, you’ve never seen anything like Fight Night before. Five hooded figures file on stage. No, they are not Rocky Marciano or even Rocky Balboa. We are asked to pick our favourite. We know nothing of them. Just pick one from your initial reaction. Appearance? Clothing? A sound bite? The next 90 minutes are painfully revealing. Not so much about the five actors on stage – but about us. Fight Night is a show for our fuddled times. Before we are through, this fascinating exercise in reality theatre will have us questioning our most basic assumptions about our political system and the way we are played by it. The small experimental Belgian Company, Ontroerend Goed, has now taken its astounding show all over the world; finding enthusiastic audiences in Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, and now Canada. It begins October 17 on the Citadel’s Maclab stage. It is the first play in the Citadel’s new Highwire Series; theatre tailored to the theatrically adventurous. And certainly in keeping with Artistic Director Daryl Cloran’s stated desire to provide a stage not only for local artists to stretch their wings but for national and international companies to bring their different approaches to the Citadel’s audiences. “I’ve had my eye on this company for some time,” says Cloran. “It’s innovative, immersing,

FIGHT NIGHT a different show every night, and brings a new meaning to the word, ‘live.’ We’ve also programmed it at the beginning of a national election, so it’s a good time to re-evaluate the power of a single individual’s vote.” Ontroerend Goed began with a speculative poetry performance by Artistic Director Alexander Devriendt and a group of his friends when they were literature students. Their first show, which they called Porror, was a collection of bits and pieces: horror films, porn and poetry. Much to their surprise, it turned out to be a hit and they shopped it around – mostly to jazz clubs. “Suddenly, we were told that what we made was theatre – and then they gave us money to make more,” he remembers. “We were told we were breaking fixed rules of theatre but we hadn’t studied theatre so we didn’t know the rules,” muses Devriendt. In a series of challenging productions, the company began to probe the relationship of audience and performer. “We eventually become aware of the mechanical trickery behind the illusion of human connection.” The question asked in these early productions was, “Are your feelings real or are you just in a factory line of predictable elicited responses?”

IT’S INNOVATIVE, IMMERSING, “ A DIFFERENT SHOW EVERY NIGHT,

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean The troupe hoped to keep the interactions subtle but found the strongest audience reaction was to a segment where a female audience member was singled out and bullied. Devriendt was overjoyed. During the 2014 Adelaide Festival he told a culture blog, “There is a joy when the whole audience stands up for something. It rarely happens. There is a moment in Fight Night where I always hope they will – but they don’t generally. Real opposition only happens when most people opt out.” When we enter the (arena?/hippodrome?/pit?) we are given a small interactive voting device – a voting booth on a lanyard around our neck. The first step is to try and locate the crowd’s demographic makeup. We may find out that the audience is 50% male and 50% female. In a Toronto production the audience tittered when some people were hesitant in keying in their age. The MC suggested that if they were unsure how old they were, to just push the button for 60 years and above.

THERE IS A JOY WHEN THE WHOLE AUDIENCE “ STANDS UP FOR SOMETHING. IT RARELY HAPPENS. ...REAL OPPOSITION ONLY HAPPENS WHEN MOST PEOPLE OPT OUT.

32 CITADEL THEATRE 2019/20 SEASON

FIGHT NIGHT The set-up is simple: there are a series of voting rounds with each stage allowing the candidates to explain a little about themselves. Those that don’t immediately appeal to us are voted off the stage. The referee asks a question or gives us some information and we have a number of choices. We push our buttons and then see the results on screens over the ring. There is no guidance – no criteria. In the Toronto production, one actor pleaded, “Please like me more. Pity me, I will be your underdog.” The most votes went to a sunny, smiling blond lady. Even as the competition intensifies, the candidates offer no ideology and no policy. There are a few innocuous boiler plate pronouncements about how they would make good leaders. They campaign in our direction. The novelty of the procedure is really a manipulation in itself and a means to get to the astounding climax. There are five rounds. Each round consists of a series of votes. At the end of each round, a candidate is eliminated. Each audience creates a different set of distinctions. (Some inside info here: the actors are sometimes called upon by the director to make statements that they know will lose them votes just to see if the audience will still vote for them.) As we know, voters sometimes compartmentalize their best interests so they can vote for “someone they like.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Drawn into the process, perhaps we are not aware that we are really probing the disturbing ambiguities of an ostensibly democratic process. The very technical aspect of the production pushes us into a confusing world distorted by technology, constant polling, fake news, gerrymandering, and skewed demographics. What is interesting here is that we command the ability to control the system through voting but as the evening progresses – we have less and less control. We may choose a winner but will he or she have any credibility left? Perhaps we shall see that our votes are inconsequential in any real outcome. This is ultimate audience participation theatre but, no, it remains a collective process and you won’t be asked to come up on stage. Apparently it works. Devriendt admitted to a questioner in the South China Morning Post, “The more I worked on this show the more I realized that I gave my vote to somebody based on completely absurd reasons.” Theatre as a metaphor for the world we live in today.

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC) is proud to partner with the Citadel Theatre in presenting The Color Purple. We hope you enjoy this uplifting and soul-rising musical. Royal MTC exists to celebrate the widest spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, Royal MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves. Royal MTC was Canada’s first English language regional theatre, created when two Winnipeg theatre companies merged in 1958 under Artistic Director John Hirsch and General Manager Tom Hendry. Their goal was to produce great theatre with mass appeal. Royal MTC became a model for regional theatres throughout North America, and received a royal designation from Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. Over 60 years later, we remain Manitoba’s flagship theatre.
