message from the

Artistic Director Welcome to A Christmas Carol!

This is the 18th year of our beloved holiday production. As the new guy in town, I have been so delighted to meet countless Edmontonians who consider our production of A Christmas Carol such an important part of their family holiday tradition. And this season, I have been able to experience the production like a true Edmonton parent, as my nine-year-old son, Liam, is part of the cast. I have been able to see, first hand, the incredible work the children (and adults!) in the cast do. To me, that’s what theatre is all about – the joy of bringing people together, young and old, to create something wondrous. This year marks a “passing of the torch” for our Christmas Carol. After 17 years of directing this production, Bob Baker has invited his long-time associate, Wayne Paquette, to direct this year. Wayne and his team have recreated the production true to Bob’s vision, with Tom Wood’s incredible script adaptation, and the beautifully envisioned designs of Leslie Frankish, Robert Thomson and Michael Becker. We also welcome a new Scrooge to our family – Edmonton’s own Julien Arnold, who played Bob Cratchit in this production for many years. Thanks to the incredible work of the hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of actors and craftspeople and technicians and stage managers who have lovingly brought this show together. I am so proud to be a part of it all: a proud Artistic Director, and a proud Dad. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family and for sharing the holidays with us! Merry Christmas!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. TOM WOOD

T

om Wood is an accomplished playwright, actor, director and teacher. He has worked with every major theatre in Canada and a number in the United States. Mr. Wood has spent eight years with the Stratford Festival and six with the Shaw Festival. For the theatre, he has written B-Movie, The play (five Dora Mavor Moore awards and the Chalmers Award for Best New Play), Clap Trap, a farce, produced at Canadian Stage in Toronto and the National Arts Center in Ottawa, and Make Mine Love, a comedy about movie-making in Hollywood, circa 1938 which premiered during the Citadel’s 2014/15 season. He has also adapted this production of A Christmas Carol (in its 18th season), Pride and Prejudice, a new version of Servant of Two Masters (set in the Klondike), a new version of Uncle Vanya (set in Alberta in 1928), and a new version of Peter Pan (set in the prairies during the depression). His production of Vanya debuted in America, starring William Hurt at the Artists Repertory Theatre for an extended run and rave reviews. He has performed at the Citadel as James Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman (Sterling Award nomination), and John in Shining City (Sterling Award). Some of his directing credits at the Citadel include Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, Romeo and Juliet, Doubt: a parable, The Glass Menagerie, Hamlet, The Sound of Music and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mr. Wood’s latest adaptation, the world premiere of Sense and Sensibility, was presented as the finale of the Citadel’s 2016/17 season.

The dream had become tarnished. So, why was this demographic struggling? It’s not economic pain brought on by globalization because European countries are also affected by that phenomenon and residents are getting healthier and living longer. Playwright Stephen Karam maintains he wasn’t aware of the report when he set about writing his award-winning hit play, The Humans, which is coming next to the Shoctor Theatre mainstage. To put the play into a Citadel context, it is the sad/funny look at a dysfunctional family in somewhat the same vein as these other successful productions from the theatre: Other Desert Cities, Clybourne Park, God of Carnage, and August: Osage County. Karam was certainly responding on some level to the events that he saw unfolding around him. “I wanted to write a horror story,” he has been quoted as saying. Not a horror story in the usual sense with butcher knives and ghosts. “I want to write a play about human fear that was actually scary. It is an interesting time to think of what ‘terror’ means to us. We keep hearing the word ‘recovery’ in the news, but I think most Americans are still trying to climb out of their weird black pit of dread and malaise set off by 9/11 and the financial crisis. I’m drawn to the strangeness of people who live in a state of dread. It’s the psychological realism of everyday, it seems, that fires my imagination. I wanted to write about how we all cope with our basic existential level fears.”

Humans is a profoundly affecting “Thedrama that stretches the physiological and emotional contours of an average American family. ” Somehow in The Humans, the play and the scary world outside the walls of theatre merged at absolutely the right moment. It became a huge audience draw. Critics swooned. Said the Pulitzer Prize committee: “The Humans is a profoundly affecting drama that stretches the physiological and emotional contours of an average American family.” It won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play. Today, Stephen Karam is a mature writer very much in command of his gifts. For years, most everyone familiar with his work felt that the young playwright was a major talent just waiting for “the big one” to come along. Karam is still a young man, looking considerably younger than his (37) years. He has close-cropped hair, shining eyes that speak of intelligence and a sense of fun. He has already written two movies, Speech and Debate — about a trio of misfit teenagers who have undergone a traumatic sexual experience and a version of Chekov’s The Seagull, which boasts a big budget with a big budget cast (Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Elizabeth Moss, and Brian Dennehy), that will be released next year.

Born of Lebanese/Irish parents he grew up in Scranton, Pa. with little exposure to theatre. At the age of 10, he began writing plays. “They weren’t very good plays, some only about two minutes long, but they were simple and honest,” he maintains today. To those around him, he was, “a serious kid with a sly sense of humour.” He continued to write into his twenties (he even penned the libretto for a salon opera) and his efforts began to cultivate an audience culminating with his highly regarded work Sons of the Prophet. That comedy/ drama was about the travails of a pair of Lebanese/American brothers living hand-to-mouth in a small Pennsylvania town. It was highly autobiographical but not in the sense that word invokes. He observes, “What really interests me is emotional autobiography. I don’t know how to produce works that are not something that’s deeply scaring or troubling to me.” Karam’s accomplishments are starting to pile up. Next came The Humans and the solid fulfillment of his earlier promise of the “big one” they said was coming. “A game changing work for this gifted young playwright,” said the Chicago Tribune in its review of the world premiere in the Windy City.

We need a bit of plot here but with a warning that a simple outline of events reads as rather dreary and gives the wrong idea of the dramatic intent of the work. After a sleepless night, Erik Blake has brought his lower income blue collar family from their home in Pennsylvania for a Thanksgiving dinner at his daughter Brigid’s new apartment in NYC, which she shares with her boyfriend, Richard. It’s a crumbling, cement block, doublelevel duplex basement tenement in Chinatown. Present are his wife, Deidre, his daughter Aimee, who lives outside the city and suffers from a stomach ailment, and grandma, who is deeply lost in Alzheimers. A mysterious force keeps thumping loudly on the ceiling above. The parents, Catholic and traditionally minded, are well into middle age and unhappy that their girls have left home and abandoned their religion. As supper winds down, tensions reach a boiling point. Before I go any further, I should point out that despite what you’ve read so far, The Humans is a warmly human drama about the resilience of family in the face of great duress. And... it’s funny. Or, as one American critic phrased it, “...very, very funny.” It’s a play about fear, but it is hopeful as well. Karam observed in an interview with Charlie Rose on PBS, “I really wanted to write a play that was celebratory, fun and joyous. Although it started in an atmosphere of fear it is the story of a family unit, imperfect and suffering, that untimely vanquishes its fear and comes together out of love – demonstrating just how much astonishing resilience there is in family.”

a christmas carol 35

The Humans says something about “the American family at this moment and

it’s something that’s very true. Human connection will help the characters find their way. Families find some way to keep going.

That thought was echoed in the New York Times in its review of the Broadway opening, “Mr. Karam specializes in painful comedies that really shouldn’t be as funny as they are.” Audiences have responded to The Humans with lots of laughter and standing ovations. Said actress Jayne Houdyshell, who played the mother in the New York cast, shortly after opening night: “The audience’s reaction to the play was extraordinary. You know you’re in a really fine play when, after the play, people come up to you and say, ‘I loved it’ and then immediately start talking about their own lives. They see themselves on the stage.” Karam’s dialogue is spare and pointed – “jarring naturalism,” is how one of his actors phrased it. The playwright has written The Humans on one set and in real time. Comments Karam, “It freaks me out a bit to lock the doors and see what happens without blackouts, without relief, without rest. That is a scary place to go for a playwright.” Director Joe Mantello, talking to Rose in the PBS interview, offered: “This is what love looks like. Sometimes it’s messy, haphazard – even quite vicious – but the two emotions exist side by side in the play. That’s why audiences respond to it. The Humans says something about the American family at this moment and it’s something that’s very true. Human connection will help the characters find their way. Families find some way to keep going.” The Canadian premiere of The Humans, a co-production with Canadian Stage, will be directed by the distinguished ex-Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Jackie Maxwell, and begins its run on the Shoctor stage on January 6.

In Memory of

Ruby Johnson

On October 16, 2017, the Citadel Theatre lost one of

our most cherished family members. Ruby Johnson was a lover of theatre and the Citadel, through and through. She knew that seeing a live performance could enrich lives and create memories, which is why she attended performances for over 40 years. After a chance lunch with Margaret Mooney, former long-term Citadel Theatre Artistic Coordinator, Ruby’s irrepressible love of the Citadel led her to start volunteering here in 1988. For the next two decades, her time was spent carefully archiving the Citadel’s history so that nothing would be forgotten. Ruby greeted everyone with an infectious smile and always had time to talk to her fellow employees. She will be missed dearly by all those who knew her.
