Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to As You Like It! I have set this production in Canada in the 1960s. We start at a wrestling match, and then our lovers escape to the Okanagan (which, for Shakespeare purists, scans the same as “For’st of Arden!”), just like many freethinkers of the ‘60s escaped to get “back to the land” in the interior of British Columbia. As You Like It is a love story. Love in its many forms. From youthful romantic love, to the love of a father and a daughter, to the belief that to get what we want in life, truly, all we need to do is love and respect each other – a belief that resonated as much in Shakespeare’s time as it did in the sixties – and as it does today. We are telling this story with “a little help from our friends,” the Beatles. The Fab Four’s songs fit perfectly into this story. The challenge for me was not how to include the songs, it was how to narrow down our choices! There are over twenty Beatles songs in this production. Needless to say, I have cut A LOT of Shakespeare’s text to make room for the songs. The Bard’s story comes alive through song, as the characters find themselves in the woods where emotions can no longer be contained by words alone. Orlando’s love letters become love songs. Amiens and the Lords sing as they refine their philosophy about life and love. Even the evolution of the Beatles songwriting is perfect for the story arc of As You Like It. The early Beatles songs are naïve and youthful, which is where the young lovers start when they run to the forest. But as we meet the thinkers in the forest and life becomes more complicated, we are able to transition into the Beatles’ later more spiritual and philosophical songwriting, exploring the notion that change is possible if we all find a way to love each other. I’m so glad you have joined us for this adventure into the forest. I hope that by the end of the play, we will send you out of the theatre with a song in your heart and a belief in our shared humanity. Sincerely,
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

STUDENTS CLUB The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of As You Like It, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Patrick Howarth. Patrick is a certified fight director with Fight Directors Canada, and currently serves as the president of that association. Patrick has been choreographing and teaching stage combat since 1999. He has worked with most of Edmonton’s professional theatre companies, creating fights in many styles. He regularly teaches in the BFA Acting program at the University of Alberta, as well as a number of national and international events, including the Paddy Crean Workshop, The FDC National Workshop and the World Teachers Conference. Through the workshop, students learned how Fight Choreographers use movement and angles to create the illusion of combat onstage. The students learned the essential elements of stage combat, including safety and respect and now better understand how Actor Combatants work together to tell physical stories.

About The
PLAYWRIGHT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He was born on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and nicknamed, “The Bard of Avon.” He wrote about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, of which the authorship of some is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, and these works remain regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth; they are considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Four hundred years later, Shakespeare’s plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52.

Known as one of Canada’s finest voices, Juno-Award winning singer-songwriter Molly Johnson returns to The Arden Theatre in support of her most recent album Meaning to Tell Ya. A rare talent, Johnson’s voice evokes the aura of dark smoky nightclubs of a bygone era – which speaks to an emotional depth that few vocalists in any genre ever reach. THE GARNEAU BLOCK CITIES ARE OFTEN DEFINED in our minds by great writers. Think of Charles Dickens’ London or Edith Wharton’s New York. Alas, there have been no Dickens (or Whartons) spinning tales of E-town. Maybe it’s because we have lacked the specific character of other cities. We are no “City that never sleeps,” “Shining city on a hill” or even a “Sin City.” Oil City maybe. Hockey town, surely. Not much there and few have ever sung our praises in words.

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean IF THERE ARE REALLY A MILLION STORIES IN THE “ CITY OF CHAMPIONS, LET THIS BE THE FIRST. ” Such was the case in 2005, when enterprising Journal reporter Todd Babiak decided to do something about it. “I wanted to read Edmonton stories but there really weren’t any,” he remembers today. “I wanted a typical Edmonton story with a mix of characters who get together to solve a problem. The neighbourhood where it all takes place has to be part of the story.”
The result, The Garneau Block, was first published in serial form by the Edmonton Journal and then released as a book. Funny, inventive, fast moving, and filled with enough Edmonton references to be accused by one disgruntled reader as being “name dropping”; it was 95 “bite sized” chapters of whimsey and even a bit of surrealism. It boasted a nutty cast of characters and a real feel for the city. And it was universal enough to rise in the Canadian best-seller lists and be long-listed for the Giller Prize. The Quill and Quire review enthused, “If there are really a million stories in the City of Champions, let this be the first.” Back in 2016, when he took over as Citadel Artistic Director, Daryl Cloran was recalibrating. Not only his life in his new job, but the direction he wanted his new theatre to take. In his efforts to get to know us better, he happened on The Garneau Block. “Not every novel

THE GARNEAU BLOCK makes a good play, but I was struck by the dramatic possibilities I saw in the book.” At the time he was setting up the Citadel New Play Initiatives in an effort to uncover and develop new playwrights in the area. He suggested the book to his Associate Artistic Director, (and director, dramaturge, and theatrical entrepreneur) Rachel Peake – who was to head the new department. RacheI met with Todd and suggested Belinda Cornish, and he was excited about the possibility because of her strengths as a playwright (Little Elephants/Category E -Sterling Award) and her brilliant sense of humour. So Peake handed the book to Cornish with the invitation to adapt it for the stage. “Hooray! That would be wonderful,” Cornish replied with her usual enthusiasm. She confided later in an interview with Foreshadowing, “I had never read the book so I said ‘Yes’ sight unseen. After I read it, I said to myself, ‘Oh Lord, how am I going to adapt this?’ It was funny – hilarious and quite wonderful. The characters were so beautifully drawn, which is a gift to the playwright. But it was serialized so if you try to lift it off the page it feels like a TV series. Or maybe a 10 hour epic play. So I had to figure out the creative arc of the story and take a bit of creative license.” There was some discussion between the two writers, but not as much as one might expect. In a spirited interview on Mark Connolly’s CBC morning radio program, Cornish recounted how she asked Babiak if there was anything in particular he wanted that she could do and he replied, “I haven’t read it in years and I don’t remember a lot of it.” “Well,” she later told me, “that certainly gave me a great deal of freedom.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean That is not to say that Babiak turned his back on the project. “It was great fun,” Cornish offers, as the two long-time friends spent many hours together in meetings over coffee discussing the adaptation. “It was all in an effort to keep the same feeling about the efforts everyone took to save the neighbourhood – and in the process, save themselves. I wanted to preserve Todd’s remarkable sense of spirit and city.” They talked about how Edmonton suffered from a low sense of self-esteem but that now the city could exist “fictionally” as well. “When you read of the places you know and people you recognize in a book it gives the feeling that there is a lot more going on here than you thought.” “I’d never really done an adaptation before. I discovered that the characters weren’t ‘traditional’ as such. They each had their own story arc and sense of humour. Like a Russian play, it’s not about a single individual but a company of them. So what I did, I put them all in my mind into a single room and had them talk to each other.” To quote Quill and Quire, “The Garneau Block is catnip for those who love The Vinyl Cafe. It’s highest achievement lies in introducing us to the motley charms of the people and the city, be they bohemians who show up at Value Village, or grandees who dine on bison with blueberry sauce at the Hardware Grill.” Writing is a solitary pursuit – you are by yourself with your computer for a lot of the time. Cornish: “Rachel was a big help. She’s a well known dramaturge and certainly understood the book and the process of turning it into a play – and she was always there with words

THE GARNEAU BLOCK of support, kindness, and wisdom.” Peake, who is going on to direct the play, found her own interests in the pages. “I loved the idea of Edmonton as a place with a community as protagonist. There are added challenges with that as a structural base, but also great potential rewards.” The basic plot has a group of residents in the (fictional) Garneau Block in the University area trying to save their beloved neighbourhood after a murder in one of the homes. (No, it is not a murder mystery – the murder is a classic Hitchcockian “McGuffin” – an element that sets off the action but is not central to its development). Every change, (political, social or personal) sets off lively discussions. The characters include the depressed Madison, a travel agent who is pregnant because of a momentary lapse with some itinerant French Canadian skier in Jasper. Raymond Terlseky, a University professor on the brink of being fired. Jonas is a gay local improvisor and actor (read your own favourite real actor here) who has a wicked, skewed sense of humour, and is worried about growing old in a young man’s profession. And Rajinder, a mysterious neighbour who turns out to have a big secret.
THE IDEA OF EDMONTON AS A PLACE WITH “A I LOVED COMMUNITY AS PROTAGONIST.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean At the end of the first phase of the writer’s lab, Cornish brought her tentative draft to the group. As she remembers it, “There you are in a room by yourself with your computer and suddenly you’re in a big room with 10 or so other people and you’re expected to hand your paper baby over to them.” She remembers, modestly, that the experience was, “...gratifying.” Cloran remembers it with a bit more enthusiasm, “By the end of the first act we were all in tears and laughter, amazed at how she had really found how to chart all those characters in a way to make it dramatic for the stage. She’s a terrific writer.” Cornish: “This has really been an exciting challenge for me as a writer. It got me to work way outside of my creativity zone. I got to work with some wonderful people and made some new friends. It’s been a glorious experience.” Peake: “I think this is an important time to be focussing on community, on what brings us together, and on what we have in common.” Todd Babiak has not read the play yet. When the draft of the first rehearsal copy was released, Cornish sent it off to him to where he now lives in Tasmania. The one-time “ink stained wretch” of the Journal newsroom is now the newly minted CEO of a million dollar corporation, “Brand Tasmania.” The adapter breathlessly awaits his reaction to it. I don’t think she has to worry. The Garneau Block begins on the Shoctor stage on March 14.
I THINK THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TIME TO BE “ FOCUSSING ON COMMUNITY, ON WHAT BRINGS US TOGETHER, AND ON
”
WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON.

Royal MTC exists to celebrate the widest spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, Royal MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves. Royal MTC was Canada’s first English language regional theatre, created when two Winnipeg theatre companies merged in 1958 under Artistic Director John Hirsch and General Manager Tom Hendry. Their goal was to produce great theatre with mass appeal. Royal MTC became a model for regional theatres throughout North America, and received a royal designation from Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. Over 60 years later, we remain Manitoba’s flagship theatre.
