Message from the

Mayor

Welcome to today’s performance – A Seussified Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker Sings, a double feature of two holiday classics.

It’s hard to believe that what started as a youth drama program to fill those long summer days, would grow into such a reputable and widely respected children’s theatre program, celebrating its 35th year. Much of St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s success can be attributed to the staff, parents, Board members and dedicated volunteers and their tireless commitment to cultivating a lifelong love of theatre arts in our youth. I believe that encouraging our children to participate in the arts grows confidence and develops skills that will serve them well in all that they do. We are all pleased to have such a wonderfully talented troop in St. Albert and encourage you to consider attending future productions and/or participating in performing arts programming offered through the City (that many St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumni members now teach). Since adult acting classes are now offered, anyone of any age can get involved in performing arts. Now sit back and enjoy the show!

Message from the Friends

of St. Albert Children’s Theatre

The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre Society

would like to welcome you to the start of this festive season with two famous Christmas stories, A Seussified Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker Sings. The teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication of the directors, technicians, performers, staff, Arden volunteers, and parents come together to create this incredible and memorable production. What you are about to see is the culmination of all those months of hard work. The society offers a sincere thank you to all these amazing individuals. The holiday season is full of magic and miracles and this is what these young performers are made of. They have spent countless hours rehearsing, singing, dancing, helping each other back stage with homework, and encouraging each other. They have learned what leadership, mentoring and teamwork is all about. Congratulations on your performance tonight. Thank you, the audience, for joining us tonight and for your continued support of this program. ST. ALBERT CHILDREN’S THEATRE · 2016

SACT’s been around since eighty-one Over the years many shows we’ve done This year we wanted to do something new We had a few thoughts, narrowed it down to a few We wanted to celebrate with holiday cheer Something just right for our thirty-fifth year This task was not easy, it had to be done We found two one acts that sounded like fun It was gonna be challenging, but lots of fun too Our designers and actors knew just what to do We rehearsed and rehearsed and it soon came to be Something we’re proud of, we’re glad you could see So sit back, relax and enjoy the show now We’ll provide you with laughs ‘til we take our last bow We wish all of you lots of holiday cheer We thank you all for the past thirty-five years. ….and God bless us, everyone.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. history Tto add hirty-five years ago, in 1981, the City of St. Albert initiated a theatre project to their summer activity program. The creation of St. Albert Children’s Theatre began when thirty-six children were involved in the musical production of THE HOBBIT. The “Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre,” which is a non-profit society that is committed to the support and enrichment of young people’s drama, was then formed in 1984. We hope that you will enjoy this production and continue to support the St. Albert Children’s Theatre program. • Out of This World (1998) • Anne of Green Gables (1998) • Once Upon A Time… (1999) • Grease (1999) • Rags to Riches (2000) • Cinderella (2000) • Charlotte’s Web (2001) • Guys and Dolls (2001) • The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood (2002) • Footloose (2002) • Pinocchio (2003) • Bye Bye Birdie (2003) • Zoom! Take a Seat! the best seats in the house... can be yours!

Spotlight on C18-C20 Since its inception, St. Albert Children’s Theatre has provided training and opportunities for young people to develop skills not only in dramatics, vocals and dance, but also in leadership skills, confidence, commitment, and team participation. Respected and encouraged, participants acquire a variety of life skills that last a lifetime. The success of any program is the result of hard work, passion and dedication by those that run the program. Janice Flower has been with the St. Albert Children’s Theatre since 1985, and has acted as the Artistic Director since 1995. Janice, along with her team of Jaqueline Pooke and Rachel Bowron have dedicated their lives to the success of this program as well as to the youth of this community. It only seemed right to have seats dedicated to them. The seats were chosen by the Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre, the board that supports the program through fundraising and awareness. We chose seats C18 – C20 as this is where the team would often sit for long hours, directing, nurturing and encouraging the children as they rehearsed for the big show. The few words chosen to adorn these seats in recognition of these people could not possibly express the love and gratitude from the over 4000 children and their families that have participated in St. Albert Children’s Theatre. Janice, Jaqueline and Rachel, we hope this dedication serves as a reminder of the difference you have made in the lives of so many. What are YOU waiting for?

Put your name on your favourite seat or give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, promote your business or make a memorial tribute – the possibilities are endless.

Centre Stage: $1000 | Spotlight: $500 | Footlights: $250 Your benefit – eligible seat donations will be recognized with: • An engraved armrest plaque • A tax receipt For more information or to select your seat, contact Kylie Pollard at (780) 418-6664, or kpollard@stalbert.ca.
