Message from the Mayor Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of art and culture at the Arden Theatre. Colourful sounds, vibrant sights, and diverse artists of all forms blend to ignite a rich season of entertainment on the Arden stage in its 2014-2015 season. Every performance, every artist, every lyric to a song, leaves each one of our patrons with a singularly unique and memorable experience, which is a truly special offering that we take pride in. In early 2014, St. Albert was named the #1 place to live in Canada according to MoneySense magazine. One of many contributing factors to this honour is our city’s emphasis on cultural expression through the arts. For 31 years, the Arden Theatre has been at the very root of cultivating opportunities for individuals of all ages and demographics to escape into a valued world of artistic experiences. Ever-evolving musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world share their art in our theatre, engaging our audiences in unforgettable moments. Our stage. Your experience. Thank you for giving us many occasions this season to invite you to be engaged and entertained.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City
Message from the presenter There is nothing quite like the anticipation of waiting for a show to begin: the lights dim, a hush falls over the crowd and everyone eagerly waits for the first note of a song or the performer to appear. The energy is electric, and then the show begins... Some of the most memorable moments of my life have taken place in performing arts venues. I delight in the cultural events that engage all of my senses and transport me to another place. I distinctly remember the performances that have had me so mesmerized I’ve forgotten to breathe, the hair on my arms stood up on end and my fingers and toes began to tingle. These are experiences that cannot be duplicated and the moments I keep in the back of my mind when programming each Arden season. As I start to assemble each season, I think about the experiences I want you, our patrons, to have in the theatre, how each performer will engage with you, and how, for even just the briefest moments, you can escape the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life. I hope that this season you embrace all of the exciting performances we have lined up for you and allow yourself to be moved by the incredible world of art and culture at the Arden.

POLITICS, MUSIC, ART, FOOD, FILM AND MORE! *TO BE FAIR WE DON'T WEAR SUITS, JUST LOTS AND LOTS OF PLAID!
Adam Cohen Wednesday, November 12 \ 7:30 pm While it has taken a long time for Adam Cohen to find comfort in his own artistic space, the son of music poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen has come to terms with exactly who he is. The Montreal-born musician makes his Arden Theatre debut with a collection of new songs that are natural, eloquent and uninhibited. Audiences will experience the intimacy, power and fascinating stories behind We Go Home. The project is all the more remarkable for being the album that almost wasn’t. Cohen completed and then scrapped a previously-recorded album before starting afresh, choosing to heed the distant calling to his roots and family by recording in the living rooms of houses in which he was raised (in Montreal and Hydra, Greece). With four-star reviews from MOJO and Mail On Sunday, critical acclaim is cascading in internationally. We Go Home is picking up where the Gold-selling Like A Man left off.
“I thought I’d learned my lesson on the last record. A pretty towering lesson. That what’s most important to me are my roots, my family, my home and ultimately ‘knowing thyself’.” – Adam Cohen

Charles Ross:
One Man Star Wars Thursday, November 13 \ 7:30 pm From Off-Broadway in New York to London’s West End, from Dubai’s resorts to the Glastonbury Music Festival – in small towns, big cities, even at George Lucas’ own Star Wars conventions – this show has been places. Since 2002, Canadian actor Charles Ross has performed his frenetic solo show, One Man Star Wars, over 1,200 times in more than 180 cities to thousands of dedicated fans of the Star Wars universe. This theatrical oddity takes audiences on a brilliant and hysterical ride that respects and reveres one of the greatest film franchises of all time. Clad in black, without any set or props, Charles Ross hustles through every famous line of the Star Wars Trilogy with imagination, humour and immaculate attention to detail. Whipping through three films at the speed of light, Ross plays all of George Lucas’ iconic characters, recreates the sound effects, fights both sides of the battles and even sings from the famous John Williams score. He previously presented his hit show, One Man Lord of the Rings, at the Arden in 2013.

Little time or appetite to make the change
School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.
City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer
The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s
MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-
ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping
and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4
ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette
WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

De Temps Antan Friday, November 14 \ 7:30 pm Since 2003, De Temps Antan have been exploring and performing timehonoured melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s musical past. Comprised of Éric Beaudry, André Brunet and Pierre-Luc Dupuis, De Temps Antan plays original and traditional folk music, tours frequently, and has built a strong reputation in North America for their creative flair, high-energy performances and feel-good ambiance. Powered by Brunet’s ace fiddling, Beaudry’s powerhouse rhythm guitar and clogging feet, and Dupuis’ punchy accordion, this is hard-driving acoustic music. In their dynamic shows, these three virtuosos blend boundless energy with the unmistakable joie de vivre found only in traditional Quebec music. Propelling French-Canadian folk to a whole new level with their latest release, Ce monde ici-bas, De Temps Antan serves up another infectious slice of Quebec’s musical heritage with their time-honoured reels, contemporary Cajun-spiced tunes and ancient ballads of medieval France. Once you’re immersed in their virtuosic sound of warmth and harmony, you just might be on your feet before the first tune even ends!

The Campbell Brothers present Sacred Steel Saturday, November 15 \ 7:30 pm As the leading export of the sacred steel tradition that has sprung from the sanctuary to the concert stage, The Campbell Brothers are playing a significant role in changing North America’s perceptions of the music that comes from the House of God. Performing together for nearly two decades, the trio is one of the first of their kind to share the African-American sacred steel sound and powerfully uplifting message with a much larger audience. With their propulsive beat and inspiring sound, The Campbell Brothers are nudging into the pop-culture subconscious with steel guitar-driven gospel music that pushes genre boundaries. Their latest album, Beyond the 4 Walls, is an unbridled musical celebration, joyous in tone and singing the praises of musical freedom.
“It’s a soul-stirring blend of gospel and the power and volume of electric blues and
rock, a sound as hot as brimstone that kicks holy butt. It’s also shredding perceptions of country’s signature instrument and the limitations of church music.” – National Public Radio

Jerry Granelli A Charlie Brown Christmas Tuesday, December 16 \ 7:30 pm Christmastime is here... happiness and cheer. This holiday season, warm up to your favourite festive memories with timeless classics from A Charlie Brown Christmas. The unorthodox mix of traditional Christmas and jazz music that has moved generations for nearly 50 years is perhaps the most iconic soundtrack to the season and has been considered “one of the most beloved holiday albums ever recorded” by the Los Angeles Times. In this rare performance by jazz veteran Jerry Granelli, the drummer for the Vince Guaraldi Trio that composed and performed the original score for the cartoon drawn by Charles Schulz, relive the endearing charm, humour and innocence that reflects Charlie Brown’s search of the meaning of Christmas. With special vocal accompaniment by members of the Youth Choir from the St. Albert Youth Musical Association, enjoy heartwarming melodies like Christmas is Coming, My Little Drum, and Skating.

TaKe a SeaT! Spotlight on B13 & 14
With the Arden Theatre’s recent renovations we launched the Take a Seat campaign, encouraging patrons to sponsor a seat, but with a twist. We also wanted to know why they chose specific seats. Everyone has their favourite seat, and we’re learning that every seat has a story. Sometimes that story is short, but sweet. Glenn Walmsley explained it so simply.
The best seats in the house . . . can be yours!
“My wife Lois and I both just simply wanted to support the Arden Theatre. We have enjoyed so many wonderful nights together over the years listening to a wide variety of music and thought what better way to celebrate that, then with the purchase of seats. We didn’t necessarily pick seats that we always sit in, but rather chose two seats that were within our donation price range. From there we specifically picked #13 one of the seats as we thought that it might be harder to get a donor for that superstitious number. We look forward to the upcoming season as well as many years after.” What are YOU waiting for?
Put your name on your favourite seat or give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, promote your business or make a memorial tribute – the possibilities are endless.
