ROSE

Cousins PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND & NOVA SCOTIA

Friday, March 17 • 7:30 PM After consciously taking time away from years of touring to create, Juno Awardwinning singer-songwriter Rose Cousins steps boldly forward as a mature writer and artist in her next great stride. Recently releasing what she calls her “most honest and vulnerable” album to date, Natural Conclusion is the product of travelling across the globe creating and connecting with other writers, artists, and producers. Her goal was to be wide open emotionally – to make songs in new ways and new sounds with new people, not knowing where they would go and not needing to. The much-needed change of pace produced music that wasn’t necessarily billed for her as an artist, but for film, television, and even others to sing. It was a way to explain how she felt. A native of Prince Edward Island, Cousins lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. With additional roots in Boston, she values being part of many music communities and is constantly fueled by collaboration. Considered one of Canada’s finest, Cousins’ music bravely explores the shadowy corners of the heart: sadness, pain and desire for love in all of its simplicity and complication. For Cousins, the spark to create another album came from the moment of acceptance that, while uncomfortable and risky, everything in life arrives at a Natural Conclusion.

“It’s no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection …” ~ The Boston Globe

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. NIYAZ

featuring AZAM ALI QUEBEC

Saturday, March 18 • 7:30 PM Rooted in the traditions of Persia and with influences from Turkey and other parts of the Middle East, Montréal-based Niyaz has established themselves as an electroworldbeat super-group. For over a decade, Juno Award nominees Azam Ali and Loga Ramin Torkian have created music aimed at uniting people from different cultural and religious backgrounds. By seamlessly blending medieval Sufi poetry and folk songs from their native Iran and surrounding countries in the Persian Gulf, with rich acoustic instrumentation and state-of-the-art modern electronics, Niyaz has created an impressive and loyal worldwide fan base. Their critically acclaimed music has also been featured in several major film and television scores including True Blood, Nip Tuck and Crossing Over. In 2015, the duo released their fourth album, The Fourth Light, a tribute to the first female Sufi mystic and poet, Rabia Al Basri who was born in 8th century Iraq. Considered a feminist album, Niyaz spent more than a year writing and recording original songs inspired by a woman striving to rise above the status of inferiority placed on her by patriarchal societies and laws. Al Basri is recognized as a saint for setting forth the doctrine of Divine Love, which lies at the heart of Sufi mysticism even today. With that same spirit in mind, Niyaz brings an uplifting message of hope to audiences – a universal tribute to beauty, cultural and spiritual diversity, freedom and dignity for all.

“An evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music.” ~ Huffington Post

Men WITHBrooms ONTARIO

Sunday, March 19 • 2 PM Curling, while not our national sport, occupies a special place in the Canadian spirit where hog lines, hammers and hacks reign supreme. Co-written, directed and starring Edmonton’s Paul Gross, Men With Brooms just might be the most Canuck movie of all time highlighting the sport like no other film. A wickedly funny off-beat comedy, it follows four life-long friends on a hilarious quest for true love, macho bonding and a final attempt at big-time curling glory! You see, a decade ago curler Chris Cutter (Paul Gross) disappeared suddenly on the verge of stardom, throwing his curling stones to the bottom of a lake in a huff and leaving his fiancée standing at the altar. But when his former coach dies 10 years later trying to retrieve the granite rocks, Cutter returns home for the funeral only to find out his cremated remains will be placed in the handle of one of the stones. His dying wish – to be delivered right to the button in a final shot that will finally bring the team their longawaited fame. With the help of Cutter’s estranged father, Gordon (Leslie Nielsen), himself a former curling star, the team reunites, enters the prestigious Golden Broom competition and takes one last shot at curling’s top prize. This heartwarming story of a hero who represents every man who must take responsibility for both his own fall from grace and his salvation, features original music by many notable Canadian singers such as Our Lady Peace, Big Sugar, the Matthew Good Band, and The Tragically Hip!

Delhi 2 Dublin

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Friday, March 31 • 7:30 PM

Performance Sponsor:

Described as the “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”, Delhi 2 Dublin was a happy accident born out of Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in 2006. Their world sound started as an electronic fusion between bhangra beats and Celtic fiddle, and has since grown into anything from dub reggae to just straight-up happy dance music. Founded by Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran and Ravi Binning, the group’s larger-than-life sound transcends stereotypes with an intoxicating and energetic mash-up of music audiences have rarely experienced. Embracing the musicianship of new members James Wallace (guitar) and Serena Eades (fiddle), the band’s new release of We’re All Desi, is being hailed as their strongest album yet. Inspired by their favourite Bollywood records of the 1970s and love of funk music, the genre-bending band teamed up with producer Nick Middleton to produce an album that flawlessly combines the high energy of their live club shows with a newfound studio polish. A refined collection of the band’s origins, Delhi 2 Dublin uses instruments such as the tabla (a pair of hand drums often used in traditional Indian music) and dhol (a double-headed drum used in Punjabi bhangra music) to blaze into a new lyrical and sonic territory with the most varied beats yet. Fierce road warriors, the last 10 years of non-stop touring has helped the group become one of Canada’s most buzzed about bands. Their ridiculously energetic live show has mesmerized crowds across North America, as well as garnered loyal fan bases in Taiwan, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia, Germany, Malaysia and the UK.

FUBAR & FUBAR 2 ALBERTA

Sunday, April 2 • 2 PM & 4 PM FUBAR is an, ahem, acronym for f- -ked up beyond all repair. While goofy, this mockumentary comedy about two bozos ongoing friendship through thick and thin is sure to win your heart. Life-long friends Terry and Dean have devoted their lives to the manly arts of drinking beer, appreciating the finer points of heavy metal music and breaking stuff. They’ve grown-up together: shot-gunning their first beers, forming their first garage band and growing the great Canadian mullet known as “hockey hair.” But when the lives of these everyday Alberta men are brought to the big screen by documentarian Ferral Mitchener, audiences are taken on an exploration of the depths of friendship, fragility of life and growing up gracefully. Gaining critical acclaim and a cult status, particularly in Western Canada, FUBAR invites you to “give’r” and not look back! Released eight years after the original, FUBAR 2 finds the pals heading north to make sweet cash in the oil patch. Dead tired of barely scraping by and recently evicted from their rented house, they are out of options until an old buddy gets them high-paying jobs laying oil pipeline in Fort McMurray. Soon flush with more than just confidence, Terry starts dating a gold-digging waitress, while Dean does his best to save his buddy from a life of domestic captivity.

DOUBLE BILL EVENT

The SMALL GLORIES &

Saturday, February 4 • 7:30 PM MANITOBA

Performance Sponsor:

Thursday, April 20 • 7:30 PM The Small Glories are a new, highly creative musical union between veteran singer/ songwriters Cara Luft and JD Edwards. A powerhouse pair of Americana-folk musicians, they are a study in contrasts between her folkie “Yin” and his rocker “Yang.” Steeped in classic song structures, the duo’s tight harmonies, authenticity and visceral performances continue to garner attention nationwide. Individually, Luft is a Juno Award-winner and co-founder of the folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys, while Edwards is considered one of the finest singers of his time. Together, they are a work of genius as evident with the release of their award nominated debut album, Wondrous Traveler.

“The Small Glories are the ultimate: two amazing solo performers who somehow manage to melt into one entity, creating incredible harmonies that still raise the hairs on the back of my neck as I write.” ~ Jennifer Ives, AD, Live from the Rock Music Festival

DOUBLE BILL EVENT

JOHN WORT Hannam ALBERTA

In a double-bill exclusive, folk artists The Small Glories pair-up with roots artist John Wort Hannam for a magical night of music. Alberta roots songsmith John Wort Hannam is an award-winning songwriter and performer known for his unique take on the simple day-to-day dramas of common folk through songs that map the landscapes of both the human heart and the vast country we are proud to call Canada. A born storyteller, Hannam’s keen eye for lyrics has allowed him to share music that is personal and profound. From a teaching job on a southern Alberta First Nation’s reserve to a Juno Award nomination and Canadian Folk Music Award win, the Fort Mcleod native finds his own voice and achieves another defining moment in his career with the release of Love Lives On, arguably his best collection of material to date. “… Hannam’s narrative, achingly resilient writing approach hooks the listener immediately. The real deal.” ~Shindig UK

With a selfproclaimed soft-spot for vintage and appreciation for music of days gone by, the close-harmony swing vocal group aims to revive the sounds of the big-band era with a flawless blend of classics and original arrangements of modern pop tunes. Formed in 2013, the trio of MacEwan University music graduates – Emily Guthrie, Kate Blechinger and Mallory Chipman – evoke a familiar, yet unique swingin’ boogiewoogie sound, touched with nostalgia and passion. Inspired by the iconic 1940s sounds of The Andrew Sisters, The Boswell Sisters and Bing Crosby, The Jivin’ Belles tight harmonies are completely synchronized to the millisecond, which keeps an ever-expanding fan base coming back for more!
