What a pleasure it is to be back at The Arden Theatre! I’d like to send a huge thanks to Neil LeGrandeur for doing such an excellent job programming a season that truly is Yours To Discover. Over the past year, I’ve made some discoveries of my own, many I never thought possible, as I embarked on an exciting new adventure – motherhood. However, one of my best discoveries was how much I missed the theatre and all of you! We have lots to catch up on and I can’t wait to hear about the artistic endeavours you’ve made over the past year and performances you’d like to see on our stage next season. Find me in the lobby or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your suggestions because The Arden Theatre is Yours to Discover. Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Cultural Services, City of St. Albert We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as the other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.
lindi ortega COUNTRY | ROOTS
Friday, March 16 | 7:30 PM | $42
Anchored by her evocative soprano voice, haunting songwriting and exquisite guitar playing, Lindi Ortega can inspire crowds to dance with a roots-y rhythm or enchant them with a heartfelt ballad.
The Toronto-born, Calgary-based artist started making music at age 16 drawing influence from a variety of artists and genres including Loretta Lynn, Aretha Franklin, and most recently, Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone. This two-time Canadian Country Music Awards’ Roots Artist of the Year has toured with Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and k.d. lang, supported Carrie Underwood at the Country Music Awards, and made her stunning solo debut at the Grand Ole Opry in 2015 — a career dream come true. Ortega’s most recent release Liberty, is a concept album that follows a central character who sheds the darkness of her past and emerges into the light. Whether it was making her songs tongue-in-cheek or writing dark lyrics to happy music, she admits there’s always been an element of balancing light and dark on previous albums. However, Ortega paves new ground for herself by scaling back the boot-stomping, throwback country approach she’s known for, instead creating songs with unpredictable chord changes and polishing a set of music that reflects her lineage. Her father is Mexican; her mother is Irish. Listen closely and you’ll also find Ortega’s experiences in the lyrics!
“[Ortega] bears comparison with country forebears Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.” – The Guardian 6

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Vibrant muRal now permanent
fixture in heart of downtown For nearly 20 years, local visual artist Bella TotinoBusby’s painted mural Healthy Communities has adorned the side of a business building on the corner of St. Michael and Perron Street in downtown St. Albert.
Part of St. Albert’s Art in Public Places collection since 1999, this fun and colourful artwork highlights various aspects of what makes a healthy community. Laced with brilliant reds and blues, it depicts two Detail of Healthy Communities residents walking a dog by a river while others swim. “I felt the Sturgeon River was at the heart of the City and as such placed elements showing healthy and fun activities in and around the flow of the river,” says Totino-Busby. “It was painted in multiple layers of transparent acrylic paint to add to the viewing experience. After two decades, I think it’s safe to say it’s now a fixture in the downtown landscape.” While Healthy Communities was Totino-Busby’s first public art project, it helped launch a successful future in the field with husband and business partner Verne Busby. Together the pair have created several public pieces including Our Nature, Our Place (2013), a glass tile mosaic located at Beaudry Place in St. Albert. “The permanence of these artworks gives a refreshing alternative to the fleeting digital images that we are exposed to daily. The most successful public artworks create a feeling of neighbourhood pride,” she says. “We believe that placing art in everyday locations enhances the community and challenges everyday experiences in a thoughtful, reflective way.” For the duo, it is an honour to have the opportunity to act as a visual spokesperson for a community by creating a piece of art that provides a moment of inspiration, sparks the viewers curiosity and enlightens the human spirit. To date, St. Albert boasts over 300 unique pieces in its collection of sculptures, murals, paintings and other treasures. Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Program, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund benefits the City in terms of the provision of new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging. kobo town calypso | WORLD | FOLK
Thursday, March 29 | 7:30 PM | $35
Named for the Port-of-Spain, Trinidad neighbourhood
where calypso was created, Kobo Town playfully reimagines the genre and presents it with a high-spirited liveliness that appeals to diverse audiences. The band showcases buoyant brass rhythms and intricate guitar work woven with clever social commentary and poignant poetry. Founder Drew Gonsalves was born in Trinidad just outside Port-of-Spain. He moved to Canada when he was only 13 years old, but his rhythmic heritage stayed with him. Trips back to Trinidad triggered a love for the local music, and as a result he began writing his own calypsos in tribute. In 2004, the talented artist started Kobo Town, a five-piece ensemble, with fellow Trinidad expats in Toronto. Their “calypso with a twist” sound combined with their dynamic live shows has garnered critical acclaim and growing audiences around the world. Kobo Town received a Juno Award nomination and made the Polaris Music Prize’s Long List for their 2013 album Jumbie in the Jukebox, which was recorded in Canada, Trinidad and Belize. In 2014, the band also toured with Calypso Rose, a living legend of the genre. Kobo Town’s third album, Where the Galleon Sank, was released in 2017; it has been nominated for World Music Album of the Year at the 2018 JUNO Awards.
“The music of Kobo Town is full of wit and wisdom. Calypso reinvigorated and reimagined.” 12

amaNda lindhout SPEAKER
Friday, April 20 | 7:30 PM | $52 Amanda Lindhout is a sought after inspirational speaker, trusted by big brands to deliver a life changing, transformational keynote experience. Her multiple award winning New York Times bestselling memoir, A House in the Sky, is being developed into a Hollywood motion picture by heavyweight production company Annapurna, with two-time Oscarnominated actress Rooney Mara playing Amanda. Vivid and suspenseful, A House in the Sky, is her story, elegantly told. Raised by a single mom in a small city, Amanda escaped the violence of childhood by imagining herself in the pages of National Geographic magazine. As a young woman, Amanda's curiosity led her to some of the world's most beautiful and remote places, its most imperilled and perilous countries and then into 15 months of harrowing captivity. Working as a journalist in Somalia, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road. Amanda spent 460 days as a hostage, surviving on strategy, fortitude and hope in the face of unimaginable adversity. Amanda’s unique experiences give her credibility to discuss important issues ranging from countering terrorism to supporting the women’s movement and she regularly appears in the media with her opinion. She has been featured in Vogue, New York Times Magazine, Dateline, The Today Show, Morning Joe and Anderson Cooper. Amanda’s presentations are for audiences of all sizes – she creates intimacy with the women and men in the room. Her spellbinding tale of survival builds suspense and momentum to reveal life changing insights into mind conditioning, including actionable takeaways about reframing stories of pain into power.
“Amanda is an inspiring speaker with a message that is absolutely vital for our times.” – Eckhart Tolle 16 the arden theatre | mar-apr 2018

betH portman P the good fiNd FOLK | JAZZ
Tuesday, April 24 | 2 PM | $15 St. Albert Community Hall Edmonton’s Beth Portman and her ensemble band the Good Find craft vintage-vibed music with a personal touch. Inspired by musical styles of the early and middle 20th century and her love of classic cinema, Portman sings with a nostalgic quality, musing on life and love with sass, heart, and her ukulele. Her debut album, Lovin’, was released in 2011 and received a warm reception from critics and fans alike. Portman is also an award-winning animator combining this skill with her passion for music in the creation of two National Film Board of Canada pictures – Cactus Swing and Fair Phyllis. Music has always been the tie that binds her creative outlets and has led her to venture in new directions including the recent creation of a concert series for Fort Edmonton Park. Based on her 2015 release of the same name, Take a Trip: a Musical Journey was a themed concert series celebrating the natural prairie landscape and travel by train. Happily nostalgic, but never dated, Portman’s music pays homage to simpler times. With a unique percussion collection of suitcases, picnic baskets and other unusual objects, Portman’s inventive, playful music carries the beautiful sentiment of golden-age films in a throwback mix of early jazz, folk, swing, blues and bluegrass.

taKe a seat!
When Darla Woodley was only 11 years old she lost her mother, Betty Ann Schick, to cancer. Now, thanks to a lasting gift from her husband, David, she can not only pay homage to the idea of building strength through adversity, but also offer support and encouragement to others.
“I am strong,” “I am ready,” “I can do anything,” are lines that appeared in Darla’s award-winning children’s book – the former now engraved onto a plaque located on seat H24 at The Arden Theatre. The local author whole-heartedly believes in this inspiring sentiment as well as the power of live theatre. With both of her sons involved in St. Albert Children’s Theatre (SACT) from a young age, the seat dedication also serves as a special thank you to a program that emulates inclusion and appreciation of culture. “SACT is like family and offers a place for kids to come together, feed-off various backgrounds and just be who they want to be,” she says. “It warms my heart to see my boys on stage, having fun and enjoying being performers.” Darla hopes that people read the inscription, reflect on the importance of theatre and support those that have the courage and drive to step on stage and follow their dream.
