Another season at the Arden means another invitation to the people of St. Albert and the whole capital region to welcome, and to share, a world of great performance.

How many lives have been touched by brilliance here, over thirty years? How many moments of enchantment have been shared, how many ordinary evenings have been turned into magic, how many artistic dreams have been given the push they needed to become reality? We cannot know for sure, but each of us in these seats cherishes the personal and collective treasure that has built up here over three decades, and promises to do so, we hope, for evermore.

Danse Lhasa Danse A co-production of PPS Danse and Coup de coeur de francophone Thursday, January 16

Quebec’s PPS Danse merges dance, words, and music into one voice to embody the spirit and soul of the late musician and Canadian treasure, Lhasa de Sela. In this original tribute, seven dancers, four singers, and five instrumentalists come together to present a dazzling multi-disciplinary celebration of a singer-songwriter whose voice was silenced by cancer in 2010. Lhasa was a woman of great wisdom and spirituality, and her luminous, poetic music allowed listeners to celebrate life with confidence and without hesitation. Danse Lhasa Danse is a spectacle of impassioned elegance; a heartfelt homage that resonates with emotion.

Directed by Blake Brooker, Bruce McCulloch’s new solo show chronicles his journey from wild early days as a ‘young punk’ in 80’s Alberta, to his flannel plaid days and futon nights in 90s Toronto, to becoming a ‘pajama-clad dad’ living in the Hollywood Hills. From a scowling teenager to father of two, this evening of comedy, peppered with moments of surprising poignancy, proves that although this infamous ‘Kid’ may be all grown up, his singular brand of humour and signature wit remain firmly intact.

Born in Côte d’Ivoire, raised in Mali, now based in Paris, Fatoumata Diawara has had a life covering a gamut of contemporary African experiences. Having fought parental opposition to her artistic ambitions and the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout Africa, to ultimately earn success as an actress in film and theater, Fatoumata is now immersed in the medium she was always destined to make her own: music.

Inspired by Wassoulou tradition, jazz, and blues, Fatoumata Diawara has created her own unique contemporary folk sound with a distinctly African spin. At the centre of it all is Diawara’s spellbinding voice, accompanied by rhythmic guitar playing, to create gorgeously melodic songs that draw powerfully on her own, often troubled past. Her debut album, Fatou, is almost entirely her own work, self-composed and arranged, with her own backing vocals and percussion. Little time or appetite to make the change

School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter.

At Monday’s city council meeting Coun.

Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North.

Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site.

“I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.”

The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land.

This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said.

City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer

The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas.

The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable.

MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded.

“The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta.

It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said.

But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden.

“It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-

ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added.

Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping

and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible.

When it comes to bridging diverse genres of music, the Montreal Guitar Trio, which CBC described as “the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada,” has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. For more than 13 years, the trio’s virtuosity, rigor, creativity, and dynamic stage presence have been winning applause around the world.

When performing together, they become a “phenomensemble”, shattering stylistic expectations of what is possible when six guitarists share a stage. Through their artistic exploration of progressive rock, jazz, world music, and classical genres, they fuel a fearless fire of power and intensity that burns any boundary that limits the string instrument. They play arrangements of each other’s material, as well as innovative takes on rock standards by legendary groups like Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and more. With the Arden Theatre’s recent renovations we launched the Take a Seat campaign, encouraging patrons to sponsor a seat, but with a twist. We also wanted to know why they chose specific seats. Everyone has their favourite seat, and we’re learning that every seat has a story.

When Bryan and Linda Reed sponsored their regular seats, we were curious to find out what made H32 & H33 so special.

As long time Edmonton Folk Festival goers, the Arden Theatre was known to them, but really not on their radar. As time went on they began to take note of the great programming the Arden offered, year after year.

Finally they took in a performance, and were hooked.
