MESSAGE FROM THE

Mayor

As The Botanical Arts City, we place great emphasis on cultural expression through the arts, and we are honoured and privileged to welcome musicians, speakers, dancers and theatre artists from every province and territory to St. Albert, in the interest of commemorating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. On behalf of City Council, thank you for joining us on an artistic journey across this great country we call home. We hope your experiences at The Arden Theatre offer you many moments to expand your sense of what it truly means to be Canadian.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City

MESSAGE FROM THE

Presenter

Oh, Canada! We’re tackling new territories this season – literally.

When I set out last fall to start programming the 2016-2017 season, I was inspired to celebrate Canada’s fast-approaching 150th birthday by assembling a season of performances, films and events from all across Canada. This season we’re going on a cross-country road trip, stopping in every province and territory to make new friends and visiting with some of our long-time Arden Theatre family.

We live in a country where we are privileged enough to openly honour and celebrate the art and culture of our Indigenous Peoples, our ancestors and newcomers to Canada. We are a country rich with resources, but I believe it is the people, as well as our artistic and cultural talent, that provides the greatest wealth and reward. This year, I hope that you enjoy your artistic and cultural journey across this vast landscape. I look forward to reconnecting with you all in the 2017-2018 season upon my return from maternity leave. In the meantime, I hope you’ll welcome the wonderful Neil LeGrandeur, who will be taking on the Presenter duties in my absence.

HUGO, THE SCAREDY-CAT CATERPILLAR ALBERTA

Tuesday, October 4, 2016 • 10:30 AM Filled with infectious energy, joy and humour, Edmonton’s Andrea House loves to entertain kids – whether singing for children in the hospital or dancing with toddlers at outdoor festivals, this virtuosic performer has a big ol’ heart connecting with families wherever she goes. An International Children’s Festival of the Arts Toddler Town favourite, House is proud to bring her latest venture to The Arden Theatre stage. In this Noisy Theatre presentation perfect for babies and tots, Hugo, the Scaredy-Cat Caterpillar, reminds us all that change CAN be a good thing. You see, Hugo is a caterpillar who likes everything JUST SO. He must have his chair by the fireplace, his meals at the same time and his bed covers folded the same way. Using a perfect blend of puppetry, music and storytelling, this heart-warming and interactive tale teaches young audiences how this finicky insect copes when Mother Nature warns him that he’s changing and things will never be the same.

GOODNIGHT MOON & THE RUNAWAY BUNNY NOVA SCOTIA

Sunday, December 11, 2016 • 11 AM Two beloved children’s stories come to life through poetry and black light in Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s signature style. Combining whimsical puppetry, extraordinary scenic effects and unforgettable original music, this internationally renowned touring company effortlessly introduces young audiences to both the performing arts and the excitement of reading. Mermaid Theatre’s unique staged adaptation of Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted generations of readers. A former teacher, Brown believed that young children could be fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. In fact, very few writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as the woman who paved the way to write specifically for kids aged two to five. Goodnight Moon is a celebration of reassuring nighttime rituals, while the Runaway Bunny’s pretend tale of leaving home echoes the unbreakable bond between parent and child. Featuring rabbits and rhyming bunny banter, both tales give youngsters a soothing sense of security. On tour since 2008, Mermaid Theatre’s acclaimed show has attracted over 200,000 fans throughout North America and abroad.

SINGING WITH

Sylvia

SASKATCHEWAN

Wednesday, January 25, 2017 • 10:30 AM Described as Saskatchewan’s Queen of the swing-set scene, Sylvia Chave transports families into a colourful world of make-believe with her energetic, hilarious and interactive performance. Through witty song hooks and wacky wardrobe changes, Sylvia charms both the young and young at heart to get on their feet and dance to the beat. Whether dressed as a boisterous bearded pirate or fancy flamenco-dancing fish, Sylvia’s signature “transformation station” is jam-packed with creative costumes sure to deliver grins from ear to ear. Armed with original songs that tackle all the important kid issues like snoring and stinky feet, Sylvia’s special world of fun and imagination captivates kids from beginning to end. While Sylvia started singing the day she was born, it wasn’t until after her four children grew older that she decided to follow her dream of performing and share her celebration of life through music with young children and their families. Over 25 years ago Sylvia began her journey as a songwriter and storyteller, first as part of an accomplished children’s duo, then as a solo artist – producing CDs, performing across the country and even garnering a Western Canadian Music Award nod along the way. An International Children’s Festival of the Arts Toddler Town favourite, Singing with Sylvia is a memorable family event that will stick with you like bubble gum in your hair.

HAMELIN: A NEW FABLE by Leslie Mildiner BRITISH COLUMBIA

Sunday, February 12, 2017 • 2 PM British Columbia’s Axis Theatre Company has pushed the boundaries of physical theatre for almost 40 years. Throughout its long and rich creative history, Axis has amused, inspired, and moved thousands of children and families with world-class original productions around the globe. Underscored by inventive text and music, this awardwinning company uses a brilliant mix of mime, dance, clown, mask-work, puppetry and acrobatics in its multi-disciplinary presentations. The company’s comedic, yet heart-tugging, retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is an engaging and entertaining revisit to one of the world’s most endearing fairy tales. Delivered in Axis’ unique physical theatre style, Hamelin: A New Fable reminds audiences about the importance of “keeping your word”! Set in 13th century Germany, the medieval town of Hamelin is way too big for its lederhosen – meaning it’s governed by a spoiled mayor, his ‘mommy’ and greedy corporate-types who have taxed hard-working townsfolk into poverty. Making and breaking promises as well as plain old bullying has left the town in serious trouble – that is, until 10-year-old twins devise a plan to make those in charge wake up and smell the strudel. With surprising plot twists – and of course an unlucky minstrel, magic flute and loads of rats, this loosely adapted musical-adventure, live-action play is sure to please.

Once Upon a Season ALBERTA

Wednesday, March 15, 2017 • 10:30 AM & 1:30 PM Calgary-based Bach Tots, an off-shoot of Soulocentric Performing Arts Society, produces a regular season of shows specifically geared towards families with infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers. Knowing no boundaries between theatre, dance and music, these original stage performances not only add a little creativity and inspiration to a child’s life, but also introduce them to classical and contemporary dance, visual storytelling, music and the performing arts. Now, the group is pleased to present its original production Once Upon a Season – a pioneer-themed show set on a farm that takes families on a special journey through Alberta’s heritage and history. Youngsters will watch in wonder as an array of playful barnyard animals such as Spring Pig and Winter Lamb, explore the seasons in a dance, theatre and puppetry extravaganza. In this interactive performance, children are invited to take part in as much creative movement and imaginative play as they can handle!
