Message from the Presenter

With every changing season, we have a chance to

reflect on the time and experiences that have passed and build excitement for what’s to come. Each season, it is my biggest hope that you get to make lifelong memories in our theatre and can escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life, even for just a moment. This season, we have so much to be excited about – music, dance, theatre, cirque, cinema and family programming – there’s something for everyone! I’m thrilled to welcome back patron favourites like Skerryvore, The Ennis Sisters, Sing-a-long-a Grease, as well as introduce sure-fire new favourites, Irish Mythen, Shakura S’Aida and Steve Poltz. Here’s to another remarkable year of memory-making! Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Community Services, City of St. Albert

Shakura S’Aida BLUES

Friday, February 28 7:30 PM • From $36 From her beginnings as lead singer for the award-winning world music band Kaleefah, Brooklyn-born, Swiss-raised and Canadian-based Shakura S’Aida (pronounced Shack-oo-ra Sigh-ee-da) continues to blow audiences away with her scorching Blues vocal style, as well as an uncanny ability to deliver powerful original songs and “get deep into the guts” of the most venerable standard. A versatile vocalist and consummate entertainer, her long-simmering career initially moved into high gear in 2008 with a runner-up triumph at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, where she competed against more than 100 other artists from 20 different countries. How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. VC2 Cello Duo CLASSICAL

Thursday, March 12 2 PM • From $15 • St. Albert Community Hall For most, the name Beethoven conjures a great symphonic work, piano sonata, or even a choral symphony – but is there a connection with the cello? Indeed, Beethoven’s five sonatas are at the core of the cello repertoire and serve as a springboard for the Toronto-based innovative cello duo, VC2. Their program, Beethoven’s Cellists, provides a snapshot of the cello repertoire – historic and new compositions – with ties to the greater composer. To this end, VC2’s Bryan Holt and Amahl Arulanandam introduce their own arrangements of works by Beethoven, including his cello colleagues Duport, Kraft and Romberg. Spanning genres with jazz and contemporary influences, as well as hints of rock, VC2’s program showcases the diverse future of virtuosic cellofueled music that continues to captivate audiences across the country. This performance is made possible by the generous support of the Canada Council of the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta and Prairie Debut.

James Keelaghan & Jez Lowe FOLK

Friday, March 27 7:30 PM • From $36 If you didn’t know better, old friends James Keelaghan and Jez Lowe could be twins – each cherished and celebrated songwriters and performers in their respective countries. Lowe, a Durham, England artist, has built an enviable reputation as a songwriter and performer in the world of folk and acoustic music, and as a recognized musical ambassador in the United Kingdom. More than a dozen albums, multiple collaborations and countless live performances around the world over the last 20 years have made Lowe a recognizable figure in the music community. On the other hand, Perth, Ontario-based Keelaghan is an artist who has proven to be a man for all seasons. He is clearly one of Canada’s finest singer-songwriters, writing music inspired by the discovery of people and places in another time. For nearly a quarter of a century, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, intent and curiosity.
