message from the

MAYOR

OF ST. ALBERT

It’s time to celebrate!

For three decades, the Arden Theatre has provided our community with the gift of memorable artistic experiences. Talented artists from far and wide and even from our own backyard, have brought their passion for music, dance, theatre, comedy and film to our city to share with you, our friends and dedicated patrons.

While we reflect on 30 years of cultivating vibrant cultural expression past and present and toast the Arden Theatre for the significant impact it has had in the city of St. Albert, we hope you do the same. What has been your unforgettable moment here at the Arden? I invite you to share your story with us during this 30th anniversary year. Without your dedicated support, we wouldn’t have such a milestone to celebrate. Thank you and enjoy this commemorative season.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City

message from the

PRESENTER Welcome to the 30th Anniversary season of the Arden! Before beginning my work here at the

Arden Theatre, I was a long time patron of this venue, attending countless performances with my family throughout the majority of my life. The Arden is a vital part of the community of St. Albert, and the greater Edmonton region, and I know firsthand what kind of impact it has on the lives of its patrons, both young and old. I look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary with you and hearing about your family’s favourite memories from the past 30 years at the Arden. Cultural Services

Performing Arts

CLASSES Is your child a budding thespian or natural performer?

Our Performing Arts classes might just be the thing to channel that creative energy. Programmed by Janice Flower, St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s Director, we offer such favourites as Musical Theatre, Improv classes, Acting and Breakdancing. Our classes provide a unique opportunity for kids to build confidence and teamwork skills all while having fun! Stay up to date on seasonal class offerings by visiting sta-culture.com.

In conjunction with StArts Fest, we’re kicking off this season’s Family Series with a well known artist that will musically and comically delight children of all ages. Who better encapsulates this then multi award-winner Norman Foote! Known for his kid’s-eye view, Norman’s fun and quirky sense of humour has become the hallmark of his music, making him beloved to generations of fans. Just try to resist moving and grooving to Norman’s bouncy-pop music and clever lyrics. And if that doesn’t get you, his fun lively show with its puppetry and physical comedy will have you on your feet cheering for more. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve asked Norman to come to town early, collaborate with students from two local schools, and prepare a special performance for The Arden’s audience. Norman will be working with students from Leo Nickerson Elementary School & École Muriel Martin to create this one-of-a-kind performance.

We cannot say enough about fan favourite Will Stroet,

who returns to the Arden with his Backyard Band for our Noisy Theatre presentation. A tireless performer, Will’s schedule is always taking him somewhere to perform. Be it at a festival, on a stage, in a TV studio, or at a quaint coffee house, Will is most at home performing for his little fans. Will’s award-winning show is equal parts interactive and educational, plus it’s bilingual! His music is special in that it speaks with kids on their level, and never talks down to them. As a former French immersion music teacher and a father, Will knows how to genuinely engage and entertain his pre-school audiences. As the star of Will’s Jams, airing weekday mornings on Kids’ CBC, Will has garnered national attention for his ability to inspire kids to be active, healthy, and safe. His growing list of accolades include a West Coast Songwriter’s Award, approval from the Parents’ Choice Awards and multiple nominations from the Western Canadian Awards, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Sirius XM Indies (Canadian Independent Music Awards).

Frenetic, fun, and frantic are just a few words that can describe the high octane entertainment of BAM! Percussion. From beginning to end, BAM will electrify you with their powerful rhythms and deliriously funny sketches. Their pulsating energy is contagious; through drumbeats and laughter, it literally overwhelms you. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself on your feet groovin’ and movin’ to the music of these three zany musicians. Side-splitting comedy and savage drumming virtuosity is on the menu. Served to you by three BAM characters, which look like they’ve walked straight out of a mad cartoon and onto The Arden stage. Speaking a crazy BAM language, spoken only by them, but understood by everyone from ages 3 to 93, you know unmistakably what they’re up to. Mad-cap music and hilarious humour is in full supply. The only thing you’ll want at the end of this show is... more!

This Valentine’s weekend treat for your family is both entertaining and educational. Using the basic structure of a family, Grammy-winning Turtle Island String Quartet help children understand how a string quartet functions and flourishes by using terms and examples that are already familiar; the family. Hear the beauty and distinct voice of the viola, violin, and cello both independently and as a group. With descriptions from the quartet and examples of how the instruments are used and can sound, the audience will gain an understanding and appreciation of each instrument and the unlimited collaborative potential when these independent instruments work together. Members of the audience are invited to participate throughout the presentation by joining in rhythmic clap-a-longs, dialogue with quartet members, plus a question-and-answer period following a rousing rock and roll finish.

The Itch of the Golden Nit is what you get when you ask thousands of children across Britain to entirely come up with a concept for an animated movie. Commissioned for the London 2012’s Cultural Olympiad as a way to bring art into the lives of ordinary kids, The Tate, along with Ardman Animators and the BBC, traveled all over Britain meeting with schools to develop every aspect of this film. The drawings, characters, and story are all from the creative minds of Britain’s youth. The result is a film that revolves around everyday, run of the mill, unlikely hero, Beanie. Eleven-year-old Beanie’s bland life is changed forever when he is sent on a mission. Armed only with laser lip-gloss and a pair of blend-in pants, he has to save his parents from Evil Stella and return the Golden Nit to its rightful place at the heart of the sun, thereby saving the universe. In 2011, this project was awarded a BAFTA, the British equivalent of The Oscar, in the interactive category of the British Academy Children’s Awards.

Spotlight on Row P, Seat 41 When the Arden Theatre installed new theatre seating in 2011, Janice Eglinski was one of the first people to sponsor a seat in the Arden’s seat campaign. Janice chose seat P41, located at the end of the very back row. Everyone has their favourite seat, but what’s the story behind P41? Janice made her donation in memory of her sister, Debbie Jamieson who passed away in 2006. Debbie taught for many years in St. Albert at Bellerose Composite, Lorne Akins, W.D. Cuts, Paul Kane and Memorial Composite High in Stony Plain. She touched many hearts and positively influenced countless students with her spirit and care. Debbie had a reputation for staging lavish musical productions and holding auditions where everyone won a part. Rehearsals began in September for February shows and her students learned that everyone had a place and it was okay to be different. A memorial seat at the Arden, the seat where Debbie used to sit during rehearsals, was a good fit for Janice because her sister was passionate about the arts, especially drama and music. “Deb was a bright light who attracted students as a teacher, mentor and friend”, says Janice. The plaque on the armrest of P41 reads: “The show must go on. Remembering Debbie Jamieson.” Debbie’s motto was: no waiting around – live life for today. What are YOU waiting for?
