I know this because I am a patient. This is the place where my family goes to get skin screenings and treatment for skin issues. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The care is top-notch and highly professional.

When I visited there recently to work on the cover story for this month’s issue, I was surprised to see just how much they have to offer. From Dr. Michael Pelster’s Mohs surgeries to Cristie Cain’s clinical research, Advanced Dermatology is positioning itself as one of the premier dermatological practices in the region.

While working on the story I received a bit of an

education in skin care and diseases. I just wish they had all the medications available now to treat acne about 35 to 40 years ago when I was a pimply-faced teenager!

It’s comforting to know as I grow older that there are many advances in the field of dermatology. Skin cancer is increasingly common, especially in senior populations. I spent an enormous amount of time in the sun as a child and young adult and it’s bound to catch up to me sooner or later. Having Advanced Dermatology around gives me a sense of peace knowing that the best care available is right in our back yard.

Everyone there is friendly and caring and I’ve always felt that patient care drives everything they do.

As a typical guy, I’m very likely to go on neglecting skin care until it reaches a critical point. When that time comes – or if I wise up enough to do preventive care – I will be sure to avail myself of the services at Advanced Dermatology. But don’t take my word for it, read the cover story inside this issue and find out for yourself.

Missouri city poised for more growth in coming years

By Theresa D. McClellan For the Fort Bend Business Journal When developer Brian Nguyen tore down the old Sonic restaurant at Texas Parkway and Cartwright Road and built a space for six small businesses, he was sending a message to Missouri City: he wants in on the growth.

“In visiting with the owner, I asked why off Texas Parkway and he said he saw much of the development with HCC (Houston Community College) and in the city and in talking with individuals, he felt there was a demand and this was a perfect piece for development,” said Missouri City Councilmember Jeffrey Boney.

“He has interest in doing more because Missouri City is doing a lot of things attracting business in the area. We have a great team,” added Boney.

That team includes Otis Spriggs, the city’s director of development services, and Joe Esch, the city’s economic development director. Because of their

Chicago developer Logistics Property Co. recently announced plans to develop City Park Logistics, a 97-acre project near the northwest corner of Beltway 8 and U.S

90A in Missouri City. They will break ground the first quarter of 2019 with a 77,000-square-foot building with a rear load dock. Upon completion, they will have 1.7 million square feet in seven buildings.

Developers attracted to the easy highway access, including Best Buy, which completed its $100 million distribution center in July, have created nearly three million square feet of project development in the area near Cravens Road and Beltway 8.

“Missouri City is a prime location for business,” said Esch.

It is unclear how long it may take to fill those spaces.

“It took seven years for Lakeview Park to almost fill out and the typical rise is less than 10 years. The city’s role is to continue to promote the area. The developer buys property and we are working with them and their brokers to recruit tenants. We have had a good track record,” said Sprigg.

attractive, the city has invested $2.5 million in beautification efforts.

“The Texas Parkway has seen two major senior housing developments, a new Mustang Trail subdivision, and new businesses in the Cartwright area. While there may be a few older aging infrastructures, we are working aggressively for 2019 and beyond to attract more growth,” said Boney.

Some residents have complained about the lack of restaurants along Texas Parkway as compared to Highway 6. They attract more business, and the city has adopted an incentive policy to share the wealth with owner-occupied businesses along Texas Parkway.

“We are handicapped in Missouri City, unlike Stafford, we don’t have a sales tax for economic development,” noted Esch.

“To attract the new capital investment we will consider an application and if approved we will share up to 50 percent of the benefit back,” he said.

City officials said they expect to see even more growth along Texas Parkway.

“Texas Parkway has seen more development in three years than in the last 20 years. This is a marathon, not a sprint,” said Boney.

Chipotle is first to open in The Grid

Months after breaking ground, the Chipotle Mexican Grill is the first business to open in the $500 million venture in Stafford called The Grid.

In November, a banner flying in the wind against the new blonde-colored brick building housing the popular Mexican restaurant announced its opening. As construction and underground work continues on the massive 192 acres of the former Texas Instruments property, a site now called The Grid, workers at Chipotle happily served customers and expressed interest in what is to come to the sprawling development.

“This is exciting,” Chipotle manager Miriam Santana said of the giant complex that will feature “a creative mixed-use reinvention” of the landmark site, according to the Dallas based Street Level Investments developers.

“It’s going to bring a lot of people here,” said Santana.

The Grid is expected to become a regional attraction for Stafford with shops, a central park, restaurants, highend apartments, food halls with artisan chefs, and a hotel. About $500,000 of funds from the city’s hotel tax will be used to generate tourism and income to the city.

“I believe things are progressing very nicely,” said Patti Worfe, executive director of Stafford’s Economic Development Corporation.

“Obviously the Kirkwood side has a lot going on because of the underground infrastructure that is going on. Once that is complete, I hope to see things like Whiskey Cake, In-NOut Burger and Drive Shack begin construction,” she said.

Developers have nabbed some popular tenants including Drive Shack, a golf entertainment venue, a craft cocktail bar called Whiskey Cake and the California fast foods franchise of In-N-Out Burger, which will be the first one in Texas.

ADVANCED DERMATOLOGY’S SERVICES ARE MORE THAN SKIN DEEP COVER STORY

From acne to skin cancer, achieving healthy, beautiful skin and looking good are the key reasons why people come to Advanced Dermatology.

Quality care and commitment to patient services are what keep people coming back and making referrals to friends and family. The skin care specialists are accessible with three Houston area offices in Sugar Land, Katy, and Pearland with fourth opening this spring in League City.

The practice was founded by Dr. Sherry Ingraham and Dr. Kelly Duncan and continues to grow not only in the areas served but also in services offered and reputation. That is part of what attracted Dr. Michael Pelster, a Mohs surgeon, to the practice last July.

“I think the fact that they have a good reputation. They have multiple locations.

The partners were both nice, and welcoming. Really, they’ve been very supportive in terms of giving me the staff and resources I need to do a really good job,” he said.

Dr. Pelster, a native of Tennessee, went to college and medical school in Nashville at Vanderbilt University. He then went to Northwestern University for the first four years of his training, followed by a yearlong Mohs surgery fellowship at St. Louis University. He rotates to each of the Advanced Dermatology clinics and performs up to 10 surgeries a day.

“Mostly I do something called Mohs surgery, which is a form of skin cancer removal and reconstruction that maximizes cure rate and maximizes cosmetic outcome, basically, by removing as little tissue as

He has been with Advanced Dermatology for about six months. possible,” he said. “I also do some more general surgical cases such as removing primarily skin cancer such as melanoma, basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer as well as some benign growths like cysts.”

“The patient comes in, we mark out the site of their skin cancer which has already been biopsied, and then we take a disk of tissue just slightly bigger than the skin cancer and try to remove it while taking out minimal normal skin,” he said.

“So that goes to a laboratory which is onsite and the tissue is processed. I look at the tissue under a microscope … and determine if it’s all clear and we get the patient back and get them all stitched up.

If it’s not all clear we take a little more as needed.”

He rarely has to repeat the cycle more than two or three times at the most before the cancer is completely removed.

“We do some cases that are teeny-tiny and don’t require a lot of work and we do some cases that are quite extensive,” he said.

“I like using my hands. I get a lot of joy out of that. I also like the artistry of it, so the removal is a little more technically straightforward but then the repairs can be quite artistic in some cases, trying to find out a way to restore the patient to their previous appearance and leave them with the absolute minimal possible scar,” he said. “We do some really neat stuff.”

He said he always remains focused on his patients.

“I try to run my unit in an old school sort of way,” he said. “The patients get a number that rings directly to my cell phone, so everybody we operate on has 24/7 access to me if they need it.”

The commitment to patient care, the friendly atmosphere and opportunities to grow as a professional are what drew Dr. Sangeetha Venkatarajan, board-certified in internal medicine and dermatology, here in 2017.

Dr. Venkat, who earned her degrees at the University of Maryland and Baylor College of Medicine, did a clinical research fellowship at MD Anderson and her dermatology residency at John H. Stroger Hospital in Cook County, Ill. “It was a good path for me to take. It gave me more of an understanding of medicine and dermatology and I wanted to have that strong foundation,” she said.

At Advanced Dermatology she gets to do a broad base of dermatology work.

“We see a lot of psoriasis, acne, eczema, and cutaneous manifestations of autoimmune conditions. Skin cancers – melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Apart from that we get to do a little bit of the cosmetic side, so Botox – injectables such as dermal fillers and toxins,” she said. “With the surgeries I do anything from cyst removals, lipoma removals, to non-melanoma skin cancer excisions. So I get to do so many things and work with my hands, that’s one of the best things about this field.”

Physician assistant Heather Tran joined the practice in August.

“Advanced Dermatology, I think is just a great group of providers and everyone here has one goal in mind to help patients, so I think everyone here leaves happy,” she said.

Tran, who grew up in League City, is getting to learn and grow her skills as a physician assistant at Advanced Dermatology.

anything from skin cancer to acne to warts and rashes and we diagnose and manage it all,” she said.

She became interested in the field after watching her uncle work as a dermatologist.

“With dermatology you are able to get people better and cure them of their rashes and acne. Skin cancer prevention is something I’m pretty passionate about.

Educating patients about sun safety, the best sunscreens to use and educating them about skin cancer, too,” she said.

One of the newer areas Advanced Dermatology has expanded into is clinical research. Advanced Dermatology physicians conduct phase three trials of therapeutic pharmaceuticals prior to FDA approval.

Founding doctors Ingraham and Duncan place an emphasis on patient care.

Dr. Ingraham is a board-certified dermatologist with extensive training in both medical and cosmetic dermatology including laser surgery, hyperhidrosis treatment, psoriasis treatment and eczema.

She thought she was doing something for her husband and he went along coming up with ideas for her thinking she was bored. She dropped the business and pursued her interest.

“A lot of people will do things for other people with their heart in the right place but they don’t know what they are getting into,” Decker said.

are there to make a profit not a hobby or a good time,” he said.

Since they also help clients find money for their dream with more than 40 sources for loans, they have their clients work on their credit. They work closely with the Small Business Administration and SCORE, the free volunteer business mentorship program with offices throughout Houston. They also receive referrals from banks and other lenders, as well as economic development corporations.

Since they have many clients from Central America, South America, and Mexico, Decker said all of their staff is bilingual, except for the program coordinator. They also have a relationship with the SBCD Network out of San Antonio for clients who want market research to understand the viability of everything from specific types of restaurants to health issues for the elderly or the young to mobile mechanics and cybersecurity. The information uncovered can then be used as part of a business plan to entice investors or a bank.

One of Decker’s favorite stories is of a young man he helped years ago who

now has a thriving business and is one of their top clients. Frank Nunez was renting a small parcel for his nursery on US 90A in Richmond and had a lead on a seven-acre parcel for sale. But he’d been turned down by 11 banks as he sought a loan. The 11th bank sent him to Decker.

Decker went to visit and saw Nunez’ wife holding a baby and watering the plants as Nunez worked in the heat.

“He said, ‘I can’t get money from the banks, I don’t know why. They haven’t told me anything,’” recalled Decker.

Decker asked to see his income statements, balance sheets, monthly expenses, inventory reports, and other business essentials and Nunez was puzzled.

“He said he didn’t have any of that and I asked how do you keep track of your business? He said, ‘why didn’t you say that,’ and pulled out shoe boxes with paper receipts.”

Decker realized the entrepreneur went to 11 banks with his shoe boxes and instantly knew why he was turned down for the loan. He then told him to get an accountant to prepare financial reports on the business. Nunez said he

needed to get the money in two weeks as others were eyeing the same property but the landowner said he would wait to see what Nunez was able to financially produce.

Once the financial paperwork was completed, it was apparent Nunez was doing very well. He got the property and the loan which he repaid in three years.

A few years later had an opportunity to buy an additional seven acres.

“He called me and said Joe, the bank asked me how much do I need? That’s because he was managing his business.

He received his second loan and Frank’s Nursery has 14 acres and is one of our best clients,” said Decker.

The center receives its federal funding from Congress, and since they also link with the University of Houston, they receive state dollars.

“We have to report our performance and for every dollar applied we add eight dollars to the economy. The companies we help to get started have a greater chance of success,” said Decker.

Memorial Hermann Health System named one of nation’s ‘Most Wired’ From Staff Reports Memorial Hermann Health System once again earned a spot on the HealthCares’ Most Wired list, achieving the recognition for the 14th consecutive year based on a survey of hospitals across the nation.

The list, compiled from a survey conducted by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), annually recognizes hospitals and other healthcare facilities that adopt the latest in technological solutions and strategically apply them to improve population health and operate more efficiently.

“Embracing emerging technology is vital to improving and better managing the care of our patients. Not only does it support the delivery

of safe, high-quality healthcare, it also helps lower costs and provide a more seamless experience,” said Amanda Hammel, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Memorial Hermann.

The annual Most Wired survey, now in its 20th year, traditionally tracked the adoption of healthcare IT in hospitals and health systems.

This year, CHIME took control over the Most Wired program and revised the questions and methodology to highlight strengths and gaps in the industry. The goal is to identify best practices and promote the strategic use of healthcare IT to elevate the health and care of communities around the world.
