didates, Democrat Eliz Markowitz and Republican Gary Gates, appear to think so as well leading up to the runoff election at a date still to be determined. “I think this is very much a bellwether election,” said Markowitz, the lone Democrat in the field who received the highest percentage of votes (39 percent) in the Nov. 5 election. “When we win this seat, that’s going to bring in enough money to help flip

Ever since John Zerwas spurred a special election by announcing he was stepping down from the District 28 seat in the Texas House of Representatives earlier this year, the race has been targeted as a potential harbinger for Democratic power in Fort Bend County and beyond. Both remaining can-

FBISD to hold ‘Sugar Land 95’ ceremony From Staff Reports

Fort Bend ISD will hold a “Blessing the Ground” ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 at the James Reese Career and Technical Center in preparation for reburial of the 95 sets of remains discovered there last year. Community members are invited to attend a ceremony that will be held in remembrance of the “Sugar Land 95,” whose remains were discovered at an abandoned and unmarked cemetery at the site at 12300 University Blvd. in Sugar Land. Arabella “Belle” Garcia’s screams of joy rang out Saturday morning across the HELFMAN Playground for All. Playing on its swing was especially exciting for the 7-year-old Garcia, who must utilize a walker to get around. Before Saturday, she had never been able to play on a swing set or most other typical play-

ground equipment. Now, she and all children with physical disabilities have a quaint neighborhood space to simply be kids. Meadows Place ushered in the HELFMAN Playground for All on Saturday, the culmination of a project three years in the making as the result of a partnership between the city of Meadows Place, nearby Helfman Ford and H & H Landscaping. The finished park includes artificial turf spe-

cially installed by H & H and specialized equipment such as swing sets and seesaws, with a wheelchairaccessible carousel and more equipment still to come within the next two weeks. Anyone expecting a humdrum museum experience won’t find any such thing at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Sugar Land. Instead, they’ll find newand-improved exhibits brimming with information overloads. The Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Sugar Land campus opened its newest display, the Hall

of Technology, last Friday on the first floor of the museum. Born out of a 2016 brainstorming session, HMNS Sugar Land Director and Chief Development Officer Adrienne Barker said the museum was desperately searching for ways to modernize the trips for residents after nearly a decade of offering the same old museum experience. “When you open a museum you have permanent halls, but you can’t leave it that way forever and ex-

pect people to keep coming back year after year and be excited by seeing the same old thing,” she said. “We knew it was time to freshen up and bring in some new ideas.” Three years later, and on the coattails of its 10th anniversary celebration in October, that dream has come to fruition. At its core, Barker said the newand-improved wing seeks to give visitors a glimpse into a new world at HMNS
