A Houston woman has been convicted of operating an illegal game room in Fort Bend County. A Fort Bend County jury convicted 39-year-old Maria Zapeda Sevilla of Gambling Promotion on May 23. She was sentenced to 10 months
of probation, during which she will have to complete 40 hours of community service. Sevilla was arrested after an undercover operation by the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force into the Keno Game Room, located in Sugar Land, throughout the months of April and May 2016. According to assistant district attorneys Alycia Curtis and Craig Priesmeyer, Sevilla
was a key participant in the operation of the game room, an illegal gambling establishment with approximately 100 gaming devices. Sevilla was tried before Judge Sherman Hatton Jr. in County Court at Law No. 6. Gambling promotion is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a fine up to $4,000. Priesmeyer and Curtis
said Sevilla worked as an attendant in the game room, routinely paying customers cash for their winnings on the illegal gambling devices. Evidence showed that at the time of the raid in 2016, the game room had approximately $35,000 in cash on the premises.

Abbott appoints Sugar Land product as UH student regent From Staff Reports
John Fields, a third-year University of Houston Law Center student from Sugar Land, will represent the nearly 74,000 students of the University of Houston System as the newly appointed student regent of the UHS Board of Regents. Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Fields to serve a one-year term that started June 1. The UH System is a family affair for Fields, who grew up in the Commonwealth subdivision and is one of seven siblings. His sisters, wife and inlaws are graduates of the UH system, and Fields just completed his sixth year at UH. “I have a really good working knowledge of the university and how it operates both from a student perspective and from working for the university in the general counsel’s office,” Fields said in a UH news release. “I’d like to think I work really well with people. So, an opportunity to spend a year working with the people across the system and bringing ideas together is

Key, Bradbury lead Ridge Point to first state berth By Bill McCaughey FOR THE FORT BEND STAR
Hayde Key knew he was only 10 pitches shy of the limit entering the seventh and final inning Friday night. But coming out of the baseball game wasn’t an option, not with a one-run lead and Ridge Point history on the line. “If Coach (Clinton Welch) had told me he was taking me out before the inning began, I would have refused to come out,” Key said. That determination and resiliency, which has been the name of the game for the Panthers all season, pushed them another step toward the mountaintop. Key pitched a perfect inning to finish off the 3-2 win against Kingwood, which swept the Region III-6A series and sent Ridge Point to the UIL
state tournament for the first time. Ridge Point (32-4-1) will square off against McKinney Boyd (31-14) in the Class 6A state semifinals on Friday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Reaching that point was a quite a feat for the Panthers, whose attitude never wavered while rebounding from earlyseason struggles or stepping up with their backs against the wall during the highest-stakes games of the season. “This team has been down half our games this season, but we rally back every time. We just know we can win,” infielder Jack Baker said. “I don’t know what it is, but we just find a way to win. It’s crazy. It really is.” Ridge Point’s 2015 softball team, 2015 football team and 2018 volleyball team made it to the state tournament but came
up short. The Panther baseball team wants to change that trend. “Our goal at the beginning of the year was to get on the air-conditioned bus and go to Round Rock,” catcher Will Pendergrass said. “It just feels so good to get to do it.” Beginning with a winnertake-all battle in the regional quarterfinals against Cypress Fairbanks, the Panthers had overcome early-inning deficits in four consecutive games prior to Saturday’s wire-to-wire clincher. Overall, Welch’s squad has won 10 of the 11 games it’s played in the postseason and has lost just twice since Feb. 23 in what is easily the best run in program history. “Any year is a good time to

HCC Southwest responding to evolving industry By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
One of the education systems serving Fort Bend County is taking steps toward improving its service to students as well as companies in the manufacturing industry, and multiple local officials have thrown their support behind the initiative. Houston Community College’s Southwest system – which has campuses in Missouri City Officials and manufacturing executives meet during a May and Stafford – recently began 23 roundtable meeting at HCC's Stafford campus to discuss attempting to enhance its ability to keep up with industry trends education initiatives. amidst an infusion of technology. That goal brought together more than a dozen area industry representatives, economic development council leaders and elected officials, including County Judge KP George and Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella, for a May 23 roundtable at HCC’s Stafford campus to explore how the system can better prepare students for the evolving industry. Among the ideas discussed were implementing middle school and high school coursework tailored to the manufacturing industry – with
the potential for dual-credit courses tied to HCC – and promoting STEM careers through program-specific marketing. “With this evolving trend, we need to have a highly-skilled workforce to be able to operate those production processes, and we need industry partners to give us input as to how their processes are changing and what skills we need to give the students,” said Ritu Raju, interim president for HCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Cen-
