During a special called meeting on May 17, the Stafford MSD Board of Trustees voted 4-2 to shrink the district’s staff by terminating Early Childhood Center assistant principal Ciji Lange and Chief Innovations Officer Marva Rasberry. Board President Chris-

Hamirani topher Caldwell made the motion to not renew

the contracts of Lange and Rasberry, which was supported by Manuel Hinojosa, Greg Holsapple and Ash Hamirani. Alicia Lacy-Castille and Jacquelyn Jean-Baptiste voted against the motion. The newest SMSD board member, Dawn Reichling, abstained from the vote. Lange and Rasberry could not be reached for comment.

According to a news release from SMSD spokesperson Gracie Martinez, the district has experienced a decrease in enrollment of 300 students since the 2019-20 school year and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Martinez said the contracts for Lange and Rasberry are set to expire at the end of the current school year in June.

The decline in enrollment translates to a loss of $9,948 in local revenue and $2,384 in state revenue per student, or $3,699,600 in total, according to the documents detailing the district’s most recent budget and approved tax rate that went into effect on Aug. 28. Hamirani said the en-

A former Fort Bend ISD teacher was charged with four counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals, according to Fort Bend County court documents filed April 28. Graham William Reid is facing third-degree felony charges after allegedly abusing and killing his four cats. Tommy Alemán attended the first game in Sugar Land Skeeters history on April 26, 2012. He remembers, among other things, seeing former Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady throwing out the first pitch at a Skeeters game and even pitching against the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League in 2014. But even a diehard baseball fan like Alemán couldn’t have imagined the excitement and energy around Constellation Field last

Alemán is a longtime resident of Stafford and Sugar Land and said he looks forward to coming to more games to see top prospects and major league talent. “To me, it means a lot more,” Alemán said. “If you’re going to get big league guys coming in to do rehab starts, you’re definitely going to fill the place.” Travis Dunlap made the 35-minute drive from Rosharon with his wife and two young children, ages 3 and 1. He said he was

Thursday for the Skeeters’ first game as the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The Skeeters earned a 7-3 win over the El Paso Chihuahuas in their home opener as a Triple-A team. But the scoreboard was hardly the only indicator of a successful night for the franchise, which brought in new and old fans alike from all over Fort Bend County to see Dominican phenom Jose Siri and others clad in Astros jerseys chattering about seeing Houston pitchers Framber Valdez and Jake Odorizzi on rehab assignments with the minor league team.

Many children who have grown up in the Houston region have attended NASA’s Johnson Space Center on school field trips or with their families. Stafford Middle School student Nikko Cavazos is no exception. “I had gotten a telescope one Christmas,

and I wanted to use it really bad,” Cavazos said. “I was looking at a bunch of stars, and I even saw one of the planets. I think it was Saturn.” Cavazos and other students from across the Houston area — including Stafford and Sugar Land — got a chance last Wednesday to experience a glimpse of life aboard the International Space Station with astronaut Megan McArthur. She

Council of the Southwestern U.S. Students from Fort Bend ISD and The Honor Roll School in Sugar Land were also among those who took part in the Q&A session with McArthur. Cavazos, a seventh grader, asked McArthur during the event what she believed was the most beautiful thing she had seen in space. “The most beautiful thing I’ve seen from space

is our Earth,” McArthur said. “We have such a beautiful planet, and when we get time, we love to look out the window. Whether we’re passing over the ocean and you have these beautiful, unusual cloud formations, or you’re passing over land and you can see some gorgeous mountains, maybe with snow on the top.
