Fort Bend lowers local COVID-19 threat level By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Fort Bend County Judge KP George and other local officials announced April 13 that the county’s COVID-19 risk level had been lowered from orange (moderate/ significant risk) to yellow (low/ moderate risk). At the time of the announcement, the county was reporting a steady decrease in reported cases of COVID-19 over a 14-day period. Hospitals in the county were reporting an average decrease in hospitalizations of 8 percent, the county said. Under the yellow risk level, residents can resume “careful” contact with others, though it is still recommended to avoid large gatherings as well as non-essential business and personal travel. As of Monday, there had been a total of 56,195 cases of COVID-19 in Fort Bend, with the disease having caused at least 592 deaths and 54,464 people having recovered. According to data from the county and Texas Department of State Health Services, more than 465,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered to county residents as of Monday. More than 46 percent of the county’s population that is age 16 and older had received at least one dose. "I am happy about the work that we have done in Fort Bend County to ensure that the rate of COVID-19 cases in our county and region is decreasing,” George said in a news release. “It is through the efforts of our County Commissioners, the Office of Emergency Management, Health and Human Services, Emergency Medical Services, our community partners, and residents that we see a decrease in the spread of this virus." Colony Bend teacher wins districtwide award By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
From the moment she could read, Rosa Castille has been an avid reader. “I always had stacks of books. I lived at the library,” Castille said. “I just loved books. I think that was like an escape for me, to visit different places and be in different worlds.” The longtime elementary school teacher and Louisiana native has left her mark
on Colony Bend Elementary School in Sugar Land through generations of students. Castille was recognized as Fort Bend ISD’s Elementary Teacher of the Year on April 13. The district also recognized a secondary teacher of the year, Sherman Batiste of Elkins High School, and 10 other teachers in its annual awards for the 2020-21 academic year. as a third-grade teacher of English and Language Arts as well as Social Studies. “I love the family atmosphere here,” Castille said. “The administrators encourage us to reach to do something higher. I’ve always wanted to better myself and do things to
challenge myself. I think through all of that support it’s made me a stronger mentor and a better teacher.” She spent the first 17 years of her teaching career in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, where she taught special education. Castille started out at Colony Bend in the special education department, and after a few years, said she

Local nonprofit, county supporting seniors By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Few populations in Fort Bend County have been more devastated by the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic than those who belong to the 65-and-up demographic, particularly those who are living alone. “Scams can happen, falls can happen, and people live in a busy time, especially during COVID-19 when
people weren’t getting out and visiting with folks,” Michael Kahlenberg said. “We wanted a program where real people were making real phone calls and talking with them and seeing what’s going on in their world.” Kahlenberg is the director of You Are Not Alone (YANA), a local nonprofit organization geared toward providing aid and comfort to seniors who are disabled and/or living alone. He’s looking for more volunteers
to help some of the county’s most vulnerable residents. Any Fort Bend County resident who has graduated from the police academy in their municipality is eligible to volunteer, he said. He said shift lengths average between 2-4 hours, and volunteers are required to serve only two shifts per month. YANA was founded three years ago and partnered
