Quality and integrity make Tycoon Home Solutions work

This is a confession.

When I sat down to interview Louis Mancinas of Tycoon Home Solutions, I was tired, irritable and not in the mood to hear about the roofing business. Still, I put on the best game face I could muster and went at it. When I left, I felt like I had made a new friend.

Louis is about as warm and inviting a person as you could ever hope to meet, especially for someone in the roofing business. As I sat there listening to him, I saw a lot of parallels to my own life and drew some inspiration from his story.

Before he mentioned anything about his products or services, he started talking about his rags-to-riches story. He’s the son of Mexican immigrants – now U.S. citizens – whose family struggled and worked hard to make a living. He talked about going to school and working different jobs and becoming the first in his family to graduate from both high school and college.

I’m a 10th-generation American and, as far as I know, the first in my family to earn a four-year college degree, so I could relate to that accomplishment. He started and failed two businesses before getting Tycoon Home Solutions off the ground. I’ve started two businesses, one of which failed and the other I just gave away. (OK, so it was a fan club and there was not much money involved, but we ran it like a business.)

What really caught my attention was the fact that he developed the habit of listening to self-help audio books from the likes of by the likes of Napoleon

Hill, Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins, and other motivational speakers. I’ve been doing that for years. All of a sudden this kid nearly 20 years my junior was talking at a level I could really appreciate.

When Louis started talking about his commitment to quality and providing the best possible customer service, I knew we had a winner here. Whatever Louis may lacked in business savvy and acumen, he more than makes up for with his integrity and vitality. On top of that, he’s a quick learner and wise well beyond his 33 years. His chosen field may be roofing, but he’s got the right stuff to succeed in whatever he wants to.

When you put an emphasis on things like quality, integrity, honesty, and enthusiasm, you’re going to succeed in life. You’re going to become a tycoon in your industry. Louis and his lovely wife Vanessa are doing just that. They’ve built this business from scratch, just like their family. This is an honest-togoodness, pulled-up-from-your-bootstraps American dream success story.

I don’t know the first thing about roofing and I’m not currently in the market to have roofing work done, but you can bet your bottom dollar where I’m likely to go when that time arrives. In the meantime, I encourage you to read more about Louis and Tycoon Home Solutions inside this edition. Even if you don’t need roofing now, you’ll be glad you did before the need arises.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Flix Brewhouse coming to The Hub at Harvest Green Flix Brewhouse, the world’s only combination first-run cinema and dine-in microbrewery, will become the entertainment anchor at The Hub at Harvest Green, a new 300,000-square-foot upscale entertainment, dining and retail destination located at Grand Parkway and W. BUSINESS WORLD MUST ADJUST FOR DIVERSITY

Embrace diversity.

That was one of the underlying messages in a recent talk given by Dr. Zahra Jamal to the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce.

Jamal, who received a Ph.D in social anthropology from Harvard, has taught at multiple universities including Harvard and MIT, consulted for the United Nations State Department, and currently serves as the associate director at the Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance with Rice University, which seeks to educate and engage.

She spoke to business and organizational leaders, educators, lawyers and civic leaders.

“It was very well received by a diverse audience. A range of people came up to me afterward to say how much they learned and enjoyed the material, the value it holds in a world rife with division, and the relevance of this type of information in their businesses and organizations,” Jamal said.

She wanted them to walk away with an understanding and appreciation of some of the religious diversity in Fort Bend County.

“I wanted to give them a deeper understanding of key tenets, holidays, and religious expressions that may require accommodation in the workplace of the following traditions: Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism,” she said.

According to research from Pew, the religious composition of adults in the Houston metro area is overwhelmingly Christian at 73 percent. That remaining 27 percent leaves a huge market of workers who have to be considered and remembered in the workplace.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau in 2010, the estimated population of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area was 6.4 million. Non-Christian faiths such as Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and other world religions make up 7 percent. That’s nearly 450,000 people in the region who may feel unheard, unseen or dismissed at their place of employment because of their faith.

For example, getting Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter off but not other religious holidays off is a common example of accommodation, she said.

Accommodation requests typically relate to work schedules, dress, and grooming, or religious expression in the workplace or even refraining from specific activities. For example, attending prayer services, praying during work hours,

wearing religious garb, such as a cross, or yarmulke, donning a hijab, wearing a turban, or adhering to certain dietary rules should be accommodated.

She said employers could provide time and perhaps space for prayer during work hours; work out a plan to ensure that the work expected in a day is still completed perhaps via adjusted work hours or break times.

“If it would not pose an undue hardship, the employer must grant the accommodation by law,” noted Jamal.

She cited the example of the Supreme Court decision against Abercrombie & Fitch where a company in Tulsa, Okla., declined to hire a 17-year-old worker, who wore a hijab, saying her look clashed with their company dress code. The incident occurred in 2008 and was resolved by the Supreme Court in 2015.

“Understanding and engaging religious diversity in the workplace is not only regulated by law, but it is also crucial to building a more inclusive, peaceful, and just society wherein diversity is deemed a strength and an asset rather than a liability,” Jamal said.

“Moreover, research shows that diverse cultural perspectives in the workplace inspires creativity, improves profitability, and increases productivity,” she said.

OakBend Medical Center holds ribbon cutting for renovated 4th floor Over 100 community leaders attended the ribbon cutting for OakBend Medical Center’s newly renovated fourth floor at its Jackson Street campus. The renovation is part of the hospital’s Vision 2020 campaign designed to bring the most advanced concepts for a healing environment to OakBend.

The funds were supplemented by funds raised from last year’s Patchwork of Life gala, which was dedicated to raising funds for the renovation of the fourth and fifth floors of the hospital.

The homes and businesses are in unserved areas of Texas eligible for financial support from the next phase of FCC’s Connect America Fund (CAF), which helps offset the high cost of extending broadband service into rural areas. TYCOON HOME SOLUTIONS RISING IN THE ROOFING BUSINESS COVER STORY

F

or Louis Mancinas, the story of Tycoon Home Solutions is the American Dream come true.

He has taken the opportunity to battle through a hardscrabble life to build a company on foundations of quality and integrity. Mancinas is the founder and owner of the 2-year-old company and is fast building a highly reputable image in the world of roofing contractors.

“A lot of people think shingles are just shingles. There are some inferior shingles out there and we can only be Tycoons if we are using the best quality products.

Some contractors charge extra for higher quality materials. On a Tycoon roof, three upgrades are standard, they are synthetic felt underlayment, wider painted drip edge applied to the rakes and eves of a roof, and ice and water shield around the chimney and in the valleys of a roof,” he said. “We also use proprietary methods.”

Growing up and moving around the

southwest side of Houston, the 2002 graduate of Hightower High School is the first in his family to graduate from high school and college. His parents earned their U.S. citizenship about 18 years ago and worked hard to get him through San Jacinto College.

Mancinas is affable and charismatic but also a quick learner. He began working at the age of 8 assisting his father with restocking items on his bread route.

In high school through the Dulles Tech Center co-op auto mechanic program he worked as an apprentice at a Ford dealership. At that age of 16 he was also working full time at HEB. Now 33, Mancinas has been a mechanic, a car salesman, a UPS driver and has held about a dozen different jobs, acquiring many skills. He owned two previous ventures before getting into roofing and understanding there is a better way of doing business.

knowing anything about the business, Mancinas quickly learned.

“A lot of these guys were taking shortcuts at the customer’s expense,” he said. “They were using shoddy material.

They were using inferior products that wouldn’t really add value to the customers home. The roof is the most important piece that protects a home, in my opinion.”

Shortcuts and cheapskates didn’t sit well with Mancinas.

“What I quickly found out is unfortunately sometimes homeowners are not informed of the process to replace a roof; what kind of materials they should be using to add value by building a quality roof,” he said. “That way it doesn’t fail down the road five to 10 years later.

So I saw a niche in the business where I could do it a hell of a lot better, using quality products, providing outstanding customer service, and now implementing new technology.”

Not only has he learned through experience and by seeing the example

of his parents pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, he is always striving to get better. That led him to listening to personal development books on CD by the likes of Napoleon Hill and Zig Ziglar.

“The name Tycoon came from a lot of the motivational books and mentors of mine, listening to Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, Grant Cardone, and Brian Tracy.

I’ve completely immersed myself in motivational and business books,” he said. They all used the word tycoon, which I looked up and the definition said ‘tycoon, a person of power of business or industry,’ and I thought that is a very powerful word. So I started thinking, I can be that. It’s going to take me time and hard work but I will believe it into existence.”

With more business savvy and a partnership with his wife, Vanessa, a Sugar Land native and Houston Baptist University graduate, Mancinas has been building a recognizable brand and stellar reputation. When their son, Luke, was born the experience changed Mancinas.

“After my son was born I lost complete fear – the fear of failure, the fear of what people might say, the fear of rejection, the fear of objections,” he said. “I don’t say I’m different, I say I’m unique. I don’t

compare myself to anybody else. I just keep my blinders on and focus on what I’m doing.”

This is the approach and attitude he has taken toward business. He started the company on Nov. 4, 2015, the day before Luke’s first birthday. This day is also known as Tycoon Day. “We had a hailstorm hit in April 2016 and that’s where things started to ramp up. We started getting a lot of exposure,” he said.

He kept that exposure going on social media.

“We took pictures of our Tycoon truck and put it on Facebook. We asked anyone who saw it to take a picture the Tycoon truck and tag us on it and we sent them a $15 Starbucks gift card just for sharing our picture. So people were looking for the truck, looking to see where we were working,” he said.

Tycoon Home Solutions services the entire greater Houston area, but after Hurricane Harvey Mancinas has honed in on Fort Bend County.

“We still service the other areas, but Fort Bend is our primary focus,” he said.

“We feel that if we build a good brand and a successful company, we build credibility and show value to our customers that we’re in it for the long haul. We’re not just a storm company that came in from a different city or state, we’re locally owned and operated.”

Tycoon Home Solutions Office is located in Stafford, and since the beginning Mancinas has made it a point to participate in community events. From participating as a sponsor in the 2016 Fort Bend Exchange Duck Golf Classic, which raises funds to support the Fort Bend County community, to supporting the 2017 Bikes & Bugs event, which benefits the Epilepsy Foundation, and Texas Adaptive Aquatics, a water sports and hunting program for disabled children, adults, and wounded and disabled soldiers.

In November 2017 after the City of Houston cancelled the Veteran’s Day Parade, Mancinas received a call asking if he would come out and participate in the Stafford Veteran’s Day parade that was organized by Michael Berry and the Redneck County Club in less than 24 hours. He immediately agreed and participated in showing support to recognize and thank those who have served the country.

Bend Chamber of Commerce and the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In 2017 he applied and was accepted into the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Business Institute, which is an innovative small business development program.

Tycoon Home Solutions is also a BBB accredited business with an A rating.

To build on his reputation of quality and integrity, Mancinas is pushing Tycoon to be a technological leader in the industry.

“Roofing is the next industry to go into that revolutionary time. We want to be able to be the pioneers of the roofing revolution where we’re using technology as an advantage,” he said.

The most visible change is incorporating the use of drones.

“While we offer traditional roof inspections, our customers have this option that is faster, safer and more accurate,” he said.

Mancinas works with customers to make sure they’re getting what they want and that the job he does adds value to the home. He prefers to use CertainTeed shingles due to their high quality and warranty. He has also partnered with a company called Roof Maxx.

“It’s a soy-based product that you apply on the roof and it extends the roof life for five more years. It’s been scientifically proven,” he said. “It restores the petrochemicals that have been lost through the expansion and contraction of the shingles with the weather.” This is an alternative when total roof replacement is not needed to sustain the quality of the roof.

There are other things Tycoon does to bring value to the home.

“Ventilation is very key in doing a roof replacement,” he said. “We can save customers an average of 8 to 12 percent on their electricity bill with the right type of circulation and ventilation on their roof. We’ve also teamed up with a company called Attic Breeze. Attic Breeze’s solar powered ventilation fans are designed to turn itself on and off using a thermal switch.”

Even Uncle Sam supports the technology.

“If we add this product to their house it qualifies them for a 30 percent federal tax credit,” he said. “There are a lot of things we’re trying to do to save our customers money.”

Not only does Mancinas want to do a quality job on his customers’ roofs, he wants to make sure they are well informed about their options and the process as they go. He said too often an insurance adjuster will make a quick inspection and

the homeowner accepts it at face value.

“We often get calls to the office of customers who have been denied on claims by the insurance company because they didn’t have anyone representing them when the insurance adjuster was inspecting the roof.”

“Our team will be there, they specialize in identifying the damage, presenting it to the homeowner, and being there when the insurance company comes out to take a look so no damage is missed.”

“We know that Homeowners pay their premium every month and believe if damage does occur to their home they should get a fair evaluation of it to begin the process of putting their property back to whole,” he said.

Even when insurance companies agree to replace a roof after damage, Tycoon Home Solutions does a thorough evaluation on the scope of work.

“We have an in-house claims department that specializes in reviewing insurance paperwork to ensure customers are brought back to whole after storm damage,” Mancinas said.

Mancinas wants his customers to know that he’s homegrown and plans to be here a long time.

“We’re not in the hunting business; we’re in the farming business. “We want to plant those seeds and let them grow to build relationships with our customers.”

His goal is to become the best in the Fort Bend area and Texas by creating lifetime customers and provide new careers with a dynamic culture.

A

fter the success of the proposed Best Buy Distribution Center coming to Missouri City this year bringing with it jobs and taxes, the City Council is once again exploring two more reinvestment zones in the same area for business recruitment.

Best Buy will be located at Highway 90 and Cravens Road near the Sam Houston Tollway and expected to be open before the end of the year in a 550,000-squarefoot green development.

Now, in an effort to bring more business to the area, the city recently

approved the first reading of the Reinvestment Zone No. 17 for tax abatement purposes that includes about 29.18 acres of land west of Cravens Road, south of Pine Meadow Drive and east of Echo Creek Drive.

The city also approved the first reading of the investment Zone No. 18 for tax abatement purposes that would encompass an approximate 16.82-acre tract of land north of Willow Oak Drive, south of Buffalo Run, west of Fairway Pines Drive and east of Willow Wisp Drive.

“The City of Missouri City continues to experience tremendous growth and development across the city and in all asset classes of real estate development,” said Joseph Esch, Missouri City Economic Development Director.

City Manager Anthony Snipes said Missouri City recently completed a redevelopment study. More people will want to invest in Missouri City, he said, as they see the city reinvesting in itself. “So as we build out, or come close to building out, what we do in areas of redevelopment on Cartwright Road, Texas Parkway, Murphy Road, these areas need revitalization. And when they see we are doing our part, people will start reinvesting,� said Snipes.
