You can be the match to save a life

W

hen asked, most people would be willing to make a small sacrifice to save the life of a fellow human being.

I’m asking.

Especially if you are non-Caucasian or of mixed race. There are thousands of people across the country and around the world that are in need of a bone marrow transplant. Finding the right genetic makeup, however, is difficult. That is why it is important for people ages 18-44 to consider joining the registry to become a potential donor.

Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on saving lives by finding unrelated donor matches for people (patients) in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Be The Match is comprised of a global network of recruitment, donor, apheresis collection and transplant centers. Hope Guidry-Groves, Director of Cellular, Apheresis and Transfusion Services for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, said the local branch of the organization, the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, or Be The Match Houston, works in conjunction with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and are headquartered here in Houston.

Seventy percent of all patients who need a transplant don’t have a fully matched donor in their family. Patients are most likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity so finding a match can be challenging with patients who have diverse backgrounds. GuidryGroves said getting diversity has been a challenge, as 67 percent of those registered are Caucasian. Here in Fort Bend County – one of the most diverse population centers in the nation – that shouldn’t be difficult.

Getting on the registry is easy. There is a form to fill out and a cheek swab needed in order to do the genetic cataloging. The process takes just a few minutes. Those considering joining the registry should do so

only if they are willing to go through with the procedure should they be selected as someone’s match. Collections from donors are done two ways. The first donation type, which is requested about 75 percent of the time, is a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation. This collection process is similar to donating platelets or plasma at a blood center. The donor is connected to an apheresis machine, which takes in blood, separates the components and removes the T-cells, or white blood cells, and returns the rest of the blood components to the body.

The process takes anywhere from four to eight hours depending on the cell dose needed.

The second option is a bone marrow harvest. It is an outpatient surgical procedure done in the Medical Center at Houston Methodist Hospital. The donor goes under general anesthesia and liquid marrow is extracted from the back of the pelvis. The harvest procedure takes 3060 minutes due to cell dose needed. Once the donor wakes from the anesthesia and demonstrates they can walk around and keep food down, they are released to go home with their family.

That’s a small inconvenience compared to someone needlessly losing their life. I joined the registry back in the early 2000s when a friend of mine needed a bone marrow donation to help him fight leukemia.

I wasn’t a match, but he did get one. The donation extended his life several more years.

Drees Custom Homes grows local team Drees Custom Homes is expanding its local management team to meet the builder’s growing presence in the greater Houston area.

Justin Hood has been hired as land acquisitions manager for Drees Custom Homes, a new position for the company’s Houston division. In this role, Hood is responsible for securing new homesites in area master-planned communities. He has more than 20 years’ experience working for Houston-area builders, including Royce Homes, Life Forms, D.R. Horton, Dunn & Stone Builders and most recently Gracepoint Homes, where he was a member of a management team that achieved a growth in revenue of 143 percent in three years.

Plus, Brett Briggs has been hired as sales manager for the Drees Houston division. He has been active in the local housing market since 2004, leading sales operations at Newmark Homes and most recently Legend Classic Homes. Under his guidance,

Briggs’ sales teams have closed approximately $94 million in home sales. The Greater Houston Builders Association named Briggs Sales Manager of the Year in 2014.

Fort Bend County Fair wins marketing awards The Fort Bend County Fair Association received top honors for their marketing and communication efforts.

The awards were announced during Texas Association of Fairs and Events (TAFE) convention and trade show on Jan. 7 in San Antonio. The Fort Bend County Fair received 12 awards including two first-place, six second-place, and four third-place honors.

The Fort Bend County Fair competed with other large market fairs and events with attendance ranging up to100,000. President James Duke, Fair Manager Cindy Schmidt, and several board members attended the convention. The fair has received many accolades over the years for their marketing efforts including back-to-back first place wins for Best Specialty Video.

“It is an honor to be recognized by our peers, especially after the year we had with Hurricane Harvey,” Duke said. “It shows it is a team effort and I could not be prouder for our fair.”

This is the fourth year in a row that the Fort Bend County Fair Association was awarded for its e-newsletter and color ads.

Duke has been a life member of the fair since October 1998. He is a constant figure throughout the fair’s year-round activities and events.

“I am honored and excited to be part of this board and all the good it

does. To be named president, it is really a dream come true for me, and I am looking forward to a great year,” he said.

Duke has been a member of the FFA and has been volunteering with the fair for decades. Ernest Lawson, the outgoing president, handed over the presidential reins last month to Duke.

“I look forward to doing what we do best, and that is to support the kids.

Our livestock kids, the art students, the rodeo competitors, the talent show contestants, even those who are too young to compete yet, this is what the fair is all about, creating a place of family fun for all to enjoy,” Duke said.

Duke has been enjoying the fair for decades.

“Oh boy, well I have to say it all started with me being a fair-goer,” he said. “I would enjoy fair time as a place to see friends, family, and all the good it represents. I became a volunteer for the sponsor committee, senior citizens Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal H February 2018

day committee, special citizens committee, and then I was elected to the board. My commitment to the fair just grew and being involved it was a natural fit for me. I enjoy letting others know about the fair. It’s something that being in the community every day, for business or pleasure, I can easily bring awareness to what we do or share a story about the fair, it is part of my life.”

Duke is a resident of Rosenberg and is a proud alumnus of Lamar High School of Lamar CISD. His roots in the community run deep, and he has many relatives throughout the Fort Bend County region. He is a lifetime and committee member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and volunteers with several charities and organization throughout our community.

“Volunteering is something I enjoy and to be able to help an individual or an organization is something I am proud to be able to do,” he said.

Apartments removed from Telfair development proposal

Developer, city hold public meeting to display new plan

Period. he message came through loud and clear last Wednesday at a meeting hosted by Newland Communities and the City of Sugar Land to give residents a look at revised preliminary development plans for the southeast corner of Highway 59 and University Boulevard near the Smart Financial Centre.

Although there were no plans for apartments included in the revised plan and repeated assurances from presenters that apartments would never be included at the development site, many of the more than 150 people crowded into the meeting room at the University Branch Library still asked questions and voiced opposition to apartments being built there.

The opposition stems from a 2015 proposal by Newland that would have included 900 apartments on the Telfair Tract 5 property. That plan was met with

fierce opposition and quickly scrapped.

The purpose of the meeting Jan. 10 was to have an informal gathering where Newland Communities could present their revised plan to the public and receive feedback before taking the plan to the city to begin the lengthy approval process.

What Alan Bauer, Senior Vice President of the Central Region for Newland Communities, presented is a 95-acre entertainment district that includes two hotels, a conference center, community theater, medical center, office and retail outlets, parking garages and an age-restricted senior independent living community.

“What we are calling it is an office and entertainment-centric development,” Bauer said. “It consists of offices, retail establishments, parking structures, a hotel site … and what it doesn’t have is multi-family developments.”

It’s the senior independent living community that most concerned residents in attendance. Several people voiced concern about a “bait and switch” February 2018 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

to later have the senior living turned into apartments.

“There is no switch and bait going on,” Bauer said. “It’s going to be agerestricted, much like a Del Webb (senior living community).”

Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman also addressed concerns about apartments, saying that the city stipulated that the project cannot include multi-family housing and adding that the city will not build apartments on city-owned property north of the Smart Financial Centre that is being reserved for future development.

Bauer gave a brief history of the project, explaining how Newland Communities took input from the public and the city from the previous presentation and revamped it into the proposal they rolled out that night. He then turned the meeting over to Hal Sharp, a principal with the Gensler design firm, to go over more specific details of the project.

“We’ve made it pedestrian friendly and a more walkable development,” he said. “One of the key drivers is the

walkability of the site.”

He said they reduced the height of office buildings down to about four levels, shrank the number of parking garages, added space for a second hotel and rearranged the layout.

“Instead of having one hotel we contemplate two. The city is interested in having one on the city side of Lexington

and the private investment side could potentially have a second hotel,” he said.

Sharp said the medical center has already been spoken for.

“The property has been purchased by MD Anderson. They plan to build some sort of health facility there,” he said.

developments across Lexington Avenue

“It’s a much more cohesive development between the two properties,” he said.

All told, he said there would be, “around a million square feet of office space in the entire development. Building heights are being concentrated around the central area.”

Another area of concern for residents is traffic. There were complaints that Lexington is difficult to navigate, especially when there is a major event at the theatre. Residents were concerned that there were not enough roads to accommodate the increased traffic in the area. Newland and city officials said that part of the plan will undergo extensive scrutiny and be addressed before anything is approved. It is estimated that it will take more than a year to go through the permit application process before any construction can begin. That will include public hearings, city staff review and approval from Planning and Zoning before it gets before the city council.

Shah is a graduate of Baylor University in Waco. HCSS, Gene Reed, Bob Brown receive Sugar Land Legacy Awards The Sugar Land Legacy Foundation recently presented Sugar Land Legacy Awards to HCSS and Gene Reed.

A special lifetime achievement recognition was awarded to Bob Brown.

The awards recognize individuals and organizations that have made a significant, lasting impact on economic development and overall prosperity in Sugar Land. The recipients were announced at the second annual Leadership and Legacy luncheon held at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land.

The event featured Dr. Scott Parazynski, a 2016 Hall of Fame astronaut and physician who served as the keynote speaker.

HCSS was awarded in the organization category. The company was acknowledged for continual expansion efforts and their work as a pioneer in the field of construction software development and support.

Currently employing more than 270 people, HCSS has been named a best place to work in Texas for 10 consecutive years and recently organized relief efforts and supplies valued at more than $4 million to assist homeowners affected by Hurricane Harvey. HCSS employees continually dedicate hundreds of volunteer hours to raise funds for local non-profits and charities.

“HCSS proves that the impact of their company goes beyond just economic benefits,” said Sugar Land Legacy Foundation President Sunny Sharma.

Reed, founder and CEO of EE Reed Construction, was recognized in the individual category. He led the effort to create the Veterans Memorial at Sugar Land Memorial Park, one of the Legacy Foundation’s first projects.

Brown served as president of the Sugar Land Telephone Company, which was later named SLT Communications.

Throughout his career, he served on 18 professional boards and 30 community boards. He served as chairman of the Fort Bend Economic Development Council for the past 30 years and has supported numerous causes including the Texas War on Drugs, Child Advocates of Fort Bend County, the Fort Bend Education Foundation and Fort Bend Cares.

elebrating 22 years of economic development success, The Rosenberg Development Corporation (RDC) hosted its annual Business Appreciation Luncheon, Dec. 18 at the Rosenberg Civic Center.

The celebration was held in honor of many Rosenberg businesses for their economic contribution in the community.

“We’re here to thank each and every one of you,” said Jeremy Heath, Interim Economic Development Director for the City of Rosenberg. “This event is about you - the business owners, proprietors, managers and employees who invest and work here in Rosenberg every day. Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital’s NICU receives official Level III status

emorial Hermann Katy Hospital is proud to announce its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has received the official Level III designation from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The designation demonstrates Memorial Hermann Katy’s ability to care for and address the needs of critically-ill neonatal babies experiencing complex and congenital conditions.

“Thousands of babies are born every year at Memorial Hermann Katy, and we strive to do everything we can to get the newest members of our community off to a healthy start,” said Heath Rushing, Senior Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann Katy and Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital.

“We know that having a baby in the NICU can be a stressful and emotional time. Not all matches are made in Heaven, but it can be heavenly when a match is made.

Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on saving lives by finding unrelated donor matches for people (patients) in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Hope Guidry-Groves, Director of Cellular, Apheresis and Transfusion Services for Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, said Be The Match is comprised of a global network of recruitment, donor, apheresis collection and transplant centers.

Guidry-Groves said the local branch of the organization, the Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program, or Be The Match Houston, works in conjunction with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and are headquartered here in Houston.

“In alignment with the parent organization that is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, our collective mission is to grow the national registry by recruiting more potential donors and then to help facilitate a donation when a match is made,” she said. “We add people and diversity to the registry in order to

continue to offer hope to patients for whom a lifesaving bone marrow transplant is their only hope for a cure.”

Seventy percent of all patients who need a transplant don’t have a fully matched donor in their family. Patients are most likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity so finding a match can be challenging with patients who have diverse backgrounds. She said getting diversity has been a challenge, as 67 percent of those registered are Caucasian.

“Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse counties in the nation,” she said.

We have an opportunity to do more right here in our own backyard.”

Getting on the registry is simple.

Currently, all they need to do is fill out a form and provide a cheek swab. Doctors request donors in the 18-44 age group more than 90 percent of the time.

Therefore more young people of diverse racial and ethnic heritage are needed now to help patients search for a match. People ages 45-60 are selected less than 10 percent of the time, but are still able to join online.

The organization does ask that they cover the $100 tax-deductible registry fee to join.

After age 60 potential donors are removed from the registry.

Guidry-Groves said that in a perfect scenario where you have multiple donor matches, a young male donor would be the first choice due to better patient outcomes.

However, many patients do not have the luxury of multiple matches and therefore, all donors who are willing to give a small part of themselves to make a difference are needed.

Be The Match does ask potential donors to be committed to following through if they place themselves on the registry.

“The best donor is an available donor,” Guidry-Groves said. “If we tell them they’re a match and they don’t go through with it, that provides false hope; it’s sad.”

“It’s a commitment to be available in someone’s time of need,” she said.

Most of the patients in need of a bone marrow or a stem cell transplant have leukemia, lymphoma, other blood cancers, as well as sickle cell anemia or other blood or genetic disorders. Guidry-Groves said that equates to about 14,000 newly diagnosed people a year in the United States.

Guidry-Groves said doctors look for the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) to help determine potential matches. Each

person has their own unique set of HLA – a set that is inherited from each parent.

“While we do look at family first,” Guidry-Groves said, ironically, siblings are only a match about 25 percent of the time, which is one of the reasons why a registry is so important.

“About 70 percent of the time a patient’s best hope for a cure is an unrelated person in the Be The Match registry,” she said. “This is their hope.”

The process Once a potential donor submits a cheek swab, it is tissue typed and entered into a DNA registry. When a person commits to joining the registry, it takes four to six weeks to get them entered. If a match is made, the donor is asked to provide a few blood samples for the transplant center to perform additional testing.

“This is the confirmation testing stage,” Guidry-Groves said. “About one in 500 donors will be selected for this confirmatory testing stage.”

If a donor is confirmed and selected as the match for a patient, the donor will be asked to donate in one of two ways. The doctor chooses the donation method that

is best for the patient. The first donation type, which is requested about 75 percent of the time, is a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation. This collection process is similar to donating platelets or plasma at a blood center. The donor is connected to an apheresis machine, which takes in blood, separates the components and removes the T-cells, or white blood cells, and returns the rest of the blood components to the body. The process takes anywhere from four to eight hours depending on the cell dose needed. For four days prior to the collection day, the donor will receive four daily injections of Neupogen (filgrastim), which is a bone marrow stimulant. They will receive the fifth injection on the day of donation.

Guidry-Groves said a common side effect is an achy feeling. The stem cell collection is done at the Gulf Coast Blood Center headquarters in Houston.

The second option is a bone marrow harvest. It is an outpatient surgical procedure done in the Medical Center at Houston Methodist Hospital. The donor goes under general anesthesia and liquid marrow is extracted from the back of the pelvis. The harvest procedure takes 30-60 minutes due to cell dose needed. donor wakes from the anesthesia and demonstrates they can walk around and keep food down, they are released to go home with their family.

“We take every precaution and donor safety is of utmost importance. We never want to hurt them financially or physically in any way,” Guidry-Groves said. “We pay for a complete physical and check-up prior to approving them for a donation. We are serious donor advocates.”

Follow-up “When you give your bone marrow, you’re giving your immune system to someone,” Guidry-Groves said.

The agency follow-ups with donors to make sure they are doing well. They are checked on daily at first, then weekly and monthly and then annually each year.

“After a year, if both patients want to meet, we can exchange information,” Guidry-Groves said.

Meetings of donors and patients are often very emotional.

“We all cry and go through a lot of Kleenex,” she said.

In a few occasions, a donor may be called back for an additional collection to provide the patient a boost. On even rarer occasions a donor may be the match for more than one person. While the body replenishes marrow each time, Be The Match appreciates its volunteers and will not request a donor who has donated four times.

The Gulf Coast Marrow Donor Program in Houston – which also serves southeast Texas and all of Louisiana – is one of the largest centers in the nation. They

will perform about 150 collections a year – about two to three a week on average.

Nationwide there were about 6,200 successful marrow transplants last year.

When one considers that roughly 14,000 people needed a donation, there is still more work to be done. Be The Match is a partner with the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA), so matches are made worldwide.

“The challenge is that typically you match somebody with the same ethnic background or race,” Guidry-Groves said.

“For people with a diverse background or

mixed heritage … it is challenging to find a match.”
