Skeeters rebranding seems like odd business move

For many in professional baseball, the mid-January reports that the Sugar Land Skeeters are being rebranded as the Sugar Land Space Cowboys were a blip on the radar, if even noticed at all. But for baseball fans in Fort Bend County, they marked the end of an era that has been unique to Sugar Land for a decade.

If this is a marketing strategy from the Houston Astros so that their new Triple-A affiliate is more closely tied to the parent organization and its space heritage, that’s their prerogative – they’re calling the shots, and this is business in the 21st century. It’s all in the interest of brand recognition and selling merchandise.

But will people take pride in the new name the way they did with “Skeeters,” and will businesses in the area still be willing to put their name to an entity that few in the community at large may recognize as the same organization?

In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t dislike the name Space Cowboys. And unique names are par for the course with minor league baseball. I’m just caught wondering if it won’t run counterproductive to its intended business purpose. I’m not so sure the rebranding was

needed, and questions could be raised about whether it will put a dent in the team’s revenue and attendance.

The Skeeters name has built up a brand all its own in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County. Between their efforts to give back to the area and its businesses to the baseball itself, this brand has built up goodwill in the area – which in turn draws people in. Why change something the community is known for? I’m not sure “Space Cowboys” will necessarily bring that same sense of pride for the area’s residents and businesses.

Maybe the Astros are hoping to get fans back and increase revenue after a down season for the Skeeters attendance-wise, or maybe it’s for some other unknown reason. The Skeeters’ attendance was 3,255 fans per game last year – the lowest in Triple-A West and down from their final season in the Atlantic League in 2021.

But there could be many reasons for that, not least of all the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It doesn’t mean the brand had lost its luster at all.

I personally would have stuck with the brand that has become entrenched in the Sugar Land and Fort Bend County communities.

Mayweather Boxing + Fitness opens doors in Richmond area

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com In November, the Fort Bend Business Journal reported that a boxing and fitness gym utilizing the techniques of Floyd Mayweather was coming to the area. Now, the gym is open to the community.

Mayweather Boxing + Fitness – Richmond opened its doors on Jan. 22 at 2237 Bellaire Blvd., Suite 100. The gym utilizes methods developed throughout Mayweather’s boxing career, according to its website. It is the Florida-based gym’s eighth Texas location and its first gym located in Fort Bend County.

Along with offering both free weights and cardio equipment, those coming to the gym will also have access to boxing bags and personal trainers. Mayweather Boxing + Fitness also has several classes available,

Summer Moon Coffee opens Richmond location

Summer Moon Coffee opened the doors to the community at its newest store at 1135 Harlem Rd. in Richmond in early December. It is the fifth Greater Houston location for Summer Moon and its second in Fort Bend County, joining the store at 9402 Hwy. 6, Suite 100 in the Sienna neighborhood of Missouri City.

The Austin-based coffee shop offers customers dozens of types of dark, medium, and light roast coffees along with “origin” coffees that pay tribute to its roots in Austin, where the store’s website says all the company’s beans are still roasted over a wood fire. Among its flavors

FOCUS Are you expecting a tax refund this year? If so, what will you do with it?

Of course, the answer largely depends on the size of your refund.

For the 2020 tax year, the average refund was about $2,800, according to the Internal Revenue Service. But whether your refund this year will be about that size, smaller or larger, you can find ways to benefit from the money.

Here are some possibilities: • Contribute to your IRA. You’ve got until April 18 to fully fund your IRA for the 2021 tax year. But if you’ve already reached the maximum for 2021, you could use some, or all, of your refund for your 2022 contribution. Assuming you did get around $2,800, you’d be almost halfway to the $6,000 annual contribution limit. (If you’re 50 or older, you can contribute up to $7,000.)

• Invest in a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren, you might want to invest your refund in a 529 education savings plan. A 529 plan’s earnings can grow federal income-tax free, and withdrawals are federal income-tax free provided the money is used for qualified education expenses. If you invest in your own state’s plan, you might get a tax deduction or credit. A 529 plan can be used to pay for college, vocational training and even some K-12 expenses in some states. Plus, if you name one child as a beneficiary, and that child’s

What should you do with a tax refund? educational journey does not require the funds from a 529 plan, you may change the beneficiary to another eligible family member of the original beneficiary.

• Add to the “cash” part of your portfolio. It’s generally a smart move to keep at least a portion of your overall investment portfolio in cash or cash equivalents, because the presence of cash can help you in two ways. First, since its value won’t change, it can help cushion, at least to a degree, the effects of market volatility on your portfolio.

And second, by having cash available, you’ll be ready to take advantage of attractive investment opportunities when they arise.

• Boost your emergency fund.

You could use your tax refund to start or supplement an emergency fund. Ideally, this fund should contain three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. (If you’re already retired, you might

need this fund to cover a full year’s worth of expenses.) Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into long-term investments to pay for costly housing or auto repairs or large medical bills.

• Reduce your debt load. It’s not always easy to minimize your debt load, even if you’re careful about your spending habits. But the lower your debt payments, the more money you’ll have available to invest for your future. So, you may want to consider using some of your tax refund to pay off some debts, or at least reduce them, starting with those that carry the highest interest rates.

• Donate to charity. You could use part of your refund to donate to a charitable organization whose work you support. And if you itemize on your tax return, part of your gift may be deductible.

A tax refund is always nice to receive – and it’s even better when you put the money to good use.

According to a January post on the company’s Facebook page, Happy Crab Cajun Seafood was planning to open its doors at 5418 Hwy. 6 in Missouri City in February.

Happy Crab’s website says the restaurant will offer seafood baskets that include tilapia, fried catfish, oysters, and fried shrimp, along with chicken tender baskets and fusion dishes including Cajun fried rice, shrimp fried rice, and crawfish fried rice.

Also among its offerings will be appetizers such as hush puppies, cheese sticks, coconut shrimp, crab cakes, calamari, and chicken wings. There will also be specific house specials each day Monday through Thursday as well as weekend specials.

Happy Crab Cajun Seafood will be open from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon-10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Legacy Health opens senior medical clinic in Stafford

Seniors in Stafford and surrounding areas have a new option for their unique healthcare needs.

Legacy Community Health Services recently opened its newest clinic designed exclusively to meet the health and wellness needs of seniors. The Legacy Stafford Fountains Clinic, located at 12540 Sugardale Drive in the Fountains Shopping Center in Stafford, opened its doors on Jan. 24 as Legacy’s first clinic in Fort Bend County.

KHAN GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITY WITH RUN FOR OFFICE

When Mike Khan emigrated to America more than 35 years ago, he had no more than a few hundred dollars in his pocket. Now, he is a successful businessman that has thrived in Fort Bend County for decades raising his family – and he says that it is his turn to attempt to pour back into the community he said has given him all he could ask for.

“It’s given me so much, and it is time to give back. I’m someone from their district who lives here and can represent them,” said Khan, who has lived in District 76 for nearly three decades. “They’ve always been very supportive, so I feel in my heart that it’s time to give back and do what I can.”

Khan – who is the owner and founder of Radio Dabang 99.5 FM in Houston, among other businesses – is running to be the next State Representative in House District 76, which includes the Highlands between Highway 6 and Dulles Avenue in Sugar Land, Sugar Creek, Sugar Lakes, Meadows Place, Mission Bend, and Aliana, among others.

In part, he said he decided to seek elected office because he saw policies come into play that he believes have been detrimental to the district’s development and prosperity. He cited rising crime rates and school/education concerns, among others, as the primary reason for seeking to represent District 76.

“Should I get elected, I’d like to do something different for our district’s citizens. I’ll be their voice to be heard, but at the same time I’m reachable and approachable,” he said. “I’ll spend my time in the community listening to their concerns and issues that we’re all going through… My family lives here – many of the citizens are my neighbors, and they are concerned.

It’s all about providing good quality of life, and I think we can make a difference.”

Chief among the qualities Khan believes make him the right candidate for District 76 is his experience creating and running businesses. He says that he is in the business of creating and keeping jobs while keeping operations – not unlike what he feels would be necessary to run District 76 and ensure it thrives.

“Those are the types of qualities that don’t necessarily come from a career politician. They’ve learned differently, and trained through their life differently,” he said. “…What I have done in my life is creating jobs, keeping jobs, and creating new businesses. It’s about how we can create more jobs and more opportunity for small business owners – how they can grow and keep their business running.”

Further, if he does not have certain solutions for constituents right away, he believes his entrenchment and connections within the Fort Bend County

community would make him an asset in helping to find those answers in a timely manner for his citizens.

“I understand my neighbors and other local business owners,” he said. “Our neighbors don’t feel as if their interests are being adequately represented, and I plan to bring that representation to them.”

Top issues There are many issues that Khan is running his campaign on, such as illegal immigration and working to reduce property taxes. But one of those which is most important to him is education and the support of both students and teachers – both with regards to teacher funding as well as ensuring students have options available to them to enhance their education.

For the past five years, he said he has been on the board of directors for S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities, a nonprofit organization that focuses on stopping the stigma of bullying, reducing the dropout and suicide rate for at-risk high school students with disabilities who are emotionally and mentally challenged.

“The prosperity of our county and the people of our community is tied into the education kids receive today. If they don’t get a well-rounded education, then the future of our communities is going to reflect that,” he said. “And teachers are…the ones who take care of our children throughout the day. If teachers are struggling or can’t make ends meet, they’re going to bring those same stressors into their classroom – which would affect their ability to teach children.”

Another key issue for Khan, who identifies as a Conservative, is fiscal management. Due to his business background, he believes he has an insight into economics and finance, and what needs to be done with those finances in order to make things work and function properly in District 76.

“I understand the importance of how their money is spent.

I can bring that expertise to my district,” he said.

He said he is also a supporter of law enforcement, and believes that the prosperity of any area is tied to the effectiveness CONTINUES...

of local authorities.

“Property values and businesses cannot thrive if they’re under threat from crimes. That is how communities fall apart, so it is important we have police enforcing laws in our community. The value of our community is preserved because of the police force.”

Finally, he said he has been working with various veterans’ organizations in Fort Bend County to see how he can assist them in their mission. After all, he said, their sacrifices are one of the biggest reasons he has been able to build a life in the district with his family.

“These are the people who make it possible to run a business, raise your family, and to live a peaceful and prosperous life,” he said. “Without what they do, nothing else is possible.”

Houston pizza giant expanding in Fort Bend

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com In case one of Russo’s New York Pizzeria’s four existing locations in Fort Bend County weren’t convenient for area residents, two more are set to make their way here sometime this year.

Russo’s said in a Jan. 5 news release that the Houston-based pizza giant has plans to open two new locations in the county this spring, one in Katy and one in Richmond.

The Katy location will be at 22723 Morton

Ranch Rd., while location information for the Richmond restaurant has not yet been finalized, according to the release.

Franchisee Carmen Maria Torres will own and operate both the Richmond and Katy locations, according to the release. Upon their opening, there will be six locations in the county. Fort Bend Chamber elects new director, board members

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce began the New Year by announcing a new group of business leaders who will be serving on its board of directors.

Kevin Riles of Missouri City-based Kevin Riles Commercial Real Estate is the new chairman of the board, the organization said in a January news release, and also welcomed 15 new board members who are starting the first of their two-year terms. The chamber of commerce is a business organization whose mission is to serve its members and as a catalyst for excellence in business and economic growth in Fort Bend, according to its website.

Prior to his appointment as chairman of the board, the chamber said Riles served as the organization’s 2020 Business & Professional Division Chair. He is a 2019 Fort Bend Leadership

“I’m eager to continue to work on issues and initiatives that keep our business climate strong,” he said. “As a Fort Bend County native, I look forward to seeing our region prosper and grow in the new year.”
