Fun friends are back this year at Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo Out of the many plans that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench into over the last couple of years, having to cancel the annual Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo was likely one of the most heart-wrenching ones for local residents.

From not having the auctions to not being able to inhale every food on Earth that could possibly be fried, it was certainly a tough decision for the committee. But it’s time to fast forward past all of that – because even though we are still in the midst of the pandemic, the county fair and rodeo is kicking things back into gear for 2021.

This writer has had the pleasure of making multiple visits to the county fairgrounds in Rosenberg in my 29 years and change on this planet, and let me tell you – it’s something you have to experience at least once in your lifetime.

And it’s not just the fried food or rodeo events, though I’ll never say “no” to either one.

No, the Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo is just a microcosm of what makes this county tick.

I’ve talked to parents in the workforce who take a day off just to be with their younger children at the fair, because they know those types of chances can be fleeting. I have also run into those like myself who simply take some time for themselves and enjoy the fair’s atmosphere, which is a beautiful melody of laughter and camaraderie that transcends what somebody does for a living, who they are or where they traveled from to be there.

Then, let’s be real – for some of them, it really is all about eating all the fried food they can get their hands on. And how can I blame them for that? It’s Texan to the bone.

No matter why you go, read about how the County Fair and Rodeo is ramping operations back up for the 2021 incarnation of the annual festivities inside this month’s Business Journal.

They’re going hard to make up for lost time.

Biotics Research Corp. to expand in Rosenberg

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com A Rosenberg-based nutritional supply company is expanding its reach in Fort Bend County.

According to a news release from the Fort Bend Economic Development Council, Biotics Research Corporation is planning to expand with a new corporate headquarters, research facility, warehouse, and distribution site at the Rosenberg Business Park.

According to the release, the $9 million project is slated for completion in 2023. The nearly 88,000-square foot facility will retain 160 jobs while adding an additional 25 jobs, the release said.

“Biotics Research is a valued member of the Rosenberg business community, and we are thrilled to work with them and congratulate them on their expansion,” Rosenberg Mayor Kevin Raines said in the release. “The Business Park was developed not only to attract new businesses to our city, but to retain and create opportunities

for existing businesses such as Biotics Research.”

Biotics Research Corporation initially began in Harris County in 1976 but relocated to Rosenberg and Fort Bend County in 1985, according to the news release. It is one of Rosenberg’s largest employers, the release said, and will be among the first to build in the deed-restricted business park.

“Biotics Research and many of their employees have been long-time Fort Bend County residents,” Precinct 1 County Commissioner Vincent Morales said. “They have experienced continuous growth, expanding the company’s product line and market presence globally. We are proud of Biotics Research’s success and we appreciate their on-going investment in, and commitment to, our community.”

Why is it so important to have annual hearing tests?

Changes in hearing can occur gradually and slight changes in hearing can be difficult to notice. Once a hearing loss is diagnosed, it is recommended Terry Snook that it be monitored yearly. ASK THE EXPERT Reducing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Effects

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful hand condition caused by the squeezing on a major nerve that is covered by a tunnel that runs from the wrist to the hand.

Compression of this nerve may lead to severe pain, numbness, and weakness in the hands. People who have certain conditions such as diabetes and alcoholism may have a higher chance of suffering from CTS due to a higher tendency of nerve damage in these conditions.

While there is no cure for CTS, there are certain measures that can be taken to help reduce the progression of the problem. A wrist splint can be worn at night to help prevent nighttime symptoms that cause awakening. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can be taken to help relieve short-term pain. These medications should be taken as directed because too much medication can lead to bleeding. Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone may be injected into the wrist to help prevent inflammation of the nerve.

If you are a young adult, or the parent of a young adult, especially one leaving this fall for college, here are some things to consider.

Parents have been the main source of protection and decision-making for the Class of 2021 since birth. If that son or daughter is away at college, taking a travel year, or entering the military, who will take care of their financial obligations (car note, credit card bills, student loan payments) while they are away? New Indian restaurant opening in Sugar Land

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com An “upscale” Indian cuisine concept will be opening in Sugar Land Town Square this month.

According to a post from the restaurant’s Facebook page, Mahesh’s Kitchen will be opening its Sugar Land location this month at 16019 City Walk Dr. The restaurant’s website says Mahesh’s offers traditional Indian favorites such as Chicken Tikka Masala – which has fresh tomato, organic chicken breast, bell peppers, garam masala and cashew nuts – as well as bread, rice and Indian soups.

Community members also have the option of desserts such as Mango Ferni – rice pudding, sugar, and mango pulp – and three different types of rice.

“A place where you can come relax and enjoy the moments of happiness that life sends our way,” a statement on the website reads. “To cherish family and friends with great tasting food that feels like the sweetness of one’s own home.”

Mahesh’s Kitchen will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, it will operate from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. according to its website.

FOCUS You may have heard that it’s important to take the emotions out of investing. But is this true for all emotions?

Certainly, some emotions can potentially harm your investment success. Consider fear. If the financial markets are going through a down period – which is actually a normal part of the investment landscape – you might be so afraid of sustaining losses that you sell even the investments that have good prospects and are suitable for your needs.

Greed is another negative emotion. When the financial markets are rising, you might be so motivated to “cash in” on some big gains that you will keep purchasing investments that might already be overpriced – and since these investments are already expensive, your dollars will buy fewer shares.

In short, the combination of fear and greed could cause you trouble.

But other emotions may prove useful. For example, if you can channel the joy you’ll feel upon achieving your investment goals, you may be more motivated to stay on track toward achieving them. To illustrate: You may want to see your children graduate from college someday. Can you visualize them walking across the stage, diplomas in hand? If so, to help realize this goal, you might find yourself ready and willing to contribute to a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. Or consider your own retirement: Can you

Someone turning age 65 today has almost a 70% chance of eventually needing some type of long-term care, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This type of care, such as an extended nursing home stay or the help of a home health aide, is extremely expensive, and, for the most part, is outside the reach of Medicare. So, to pay for long-term care, you might have to drain a good part of your resources – or depend on your grown children for financial help.

To keep your financial independence and avoid possibly burdening your family, you may want to consult with a financial professional who can recommend a strategy and appropriate solutions to cover long-term care costs.

By drawing on positive emotions, you can empower yourself to make the right financial moves throughout your life.

Fry up the funnel cakes, batter up the corndogs, bring on the bulls, and grab your hat; the 2021 Fort Bend County Fair will celebrate 85 years from September 24 to October 3, 2021, at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg, Texas. The Fair’s 10-day run is returning to tradition with livestock shows, rodeo action, live music, and much more. The family-fun event is a tradition in Fort Bend County and was significantly modified last year due to COVID-19. From the bone-jarring action of the bull riding to the lifelong memories being made in the livestock show arena, the Fair’s board, staff, health officials, and community stakeholders have been working together to make this year come to fruition. “We look forward to being able to have the Fair for our community, especially our youth. My family and I have been part of the Fair just like many other families for generations, and I look forward to doing my part to make it happen,” says Brian Graeber, 2021 Fort Bend County Fair

For 40 years, Brian has been involved with the Fort Bend County Fair, having volunteered at the Jaycees’ food booth to co-chairing the Fair’s BBQ cookoff. “Being able to safely return to the tradition of supporting agriculture, western lifestyle, culinary competitions, and top of my list- the kids, that is what it is all about.”

A total of ten livestock shows are scheduled including, swine, lamb, goat, turkey, broiler, roaster, steer, rabbit, commercial heifer, and pen of two heifers. Three hundred seventy-four

exhibitors representing 4H and FFA organizations will be showing over 500 livestock entries.

“Our kids have been working all summer and then some on their livestock projects. Their hard work, days in the barn, early mornings and late nights, all to prepare for their moment in the show arena is a memory they will never forget,” says Jennifer Williams, Fort Bend County Fair Co-director in Charge of Livestock.

The Fort Bend County Fair gives back through its scholarship program and the auctions held during Fair Days. For 2021 the Fair awarded $185,000.00 worth of scholarships to Fort Bend County students. Forty-four of those scholarships were for scholastic achievement. In addition, Jr Livestock Auction, Commercial Heifer Auction, Student Art Auction, and Freezer Sale generate funds directly for our youth exhibitors. In 2020, due to COVID-19 limitations, only the Jr Livestock Auction, Commercial Heifer Auction, and the Freezer Sale were held and combined total for over $801,000.00, a remarkable community effort during the midst of the pandemic.

teams are already making culinary plans, and an assortment of wines are being selected for the Grapes on the Brazos wine room as all the Fair committees are already working toward fair days. Over 50 committees made up of 1,500 plus volunteers work together to put on the Fort Bend County Fair. “Every year, it is a team effort. This year is no different; we are working hard to have our fair. Our committees are working not only together within their own members, but we are working with other committees and their members to meet protocols and make this year as smooth as possible,” says Cindy Schmidt, Fair Manager, Fort Bend County Fair Association.

Get ready to cheer on your favorite Cowboy or Cowgirl. Rodeo action will return to the O.D. Tucker arena every night during the Fair’s run.

From homegrown to professional cowboys and cowgirls of all ages, we will bring the best rodeo action and send the crowd into a roar.

rodeo fans cheering. The voice of the Fort Bend County Fair, Boyd Polhamus, will be returning to call the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo action.

There are plenty of activities for every family to enjoy. Ag-Tivity Barn and the Petting Zoo are daily exhibits to get up close to agricultural and a real live animal experience. Lil Wranglers BBQ contest, Student Fun Day, Pet Show, and Stick Horse Rodeo are just a few events that our youngest fairgoers can compete and get involved.

For 2021, the Fort Bend County Fair honorees are the mom and son extraordinaire duo of Renee Butler and Nicholas Maresh. As we return to the tradition of Fair Days, Renee and Nicholas are a hidden treasure among the many supporters of the Fort Bend County Fair. Their work has spanned over decades of catering Fair functions, creating elaborate feasts, and most importantly, feeding the extended fair family on countless occasions. Their commitment to events, fair activities, and committees such as the Expectational Rodeo, are beyond appreciated. Renee is the owner/operator of Another Time Soda Fountain and Café. Nicholas is a trained Chef who has a

passion for pastry creations. It is a well-deserved honor that is being served up to these culinary artists and fair supporters.

This year’s entertainment lineup is still being finalized but includes musical acts representing Texas Music, Traditional Country, and Tejano.

Your gate admission will include the concert, rodeo action, and access to the food and shopping vendors. Carnival ride tickets and wristbands will also be available onsite for purchase.

California-based food truck opens Sugar Land restaurant

By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Fort Bend County residents have a new spot to go for those with adventurous taste buds On July 23, Main Chick Hot Chicken opened its third Houston-area location at 13513 University Blvd., Suite 300 in Sugar Land, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

The California-based food truck also has food trucks in Montrose and Spring, and six additional locations serving California. The Sugar Land restaurant will be Main Chick’s first brick-and-mortar restaurant in the Houston region, while it has another brickand-mortar in Pasadena, California.

According to the restaurant’s website, Main Chick Hot Chicken in Sugar Land features Nashville-style chicken that features hot chicken fried with spices ranging from mild to “some of the hottest peppers in the world.” Available on the menu are items ranging from chicken tenders to single pieces of chicken, and

One of the most hotly-contested and high-profile races in Fort Bend County history is over.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls, a Republican, defeated Democrat Sri Preston Kulkarni to assume U.S. Rep. Pete Olson’s seat in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District, which includes Fort Bend County and parts of Harris County and Brazoria County.

Per the Texas Secretary of State, Nehls prevailed by a margin of 50 percent to 45 percent, or 155,809 votes to 138,694 votes.

“I want to personally send heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who made calls, worked the polls, and served on advisory committees,” Nehls said in a Nov. 8 Facebook post. “This is a tremendous team effort and I could not be more appreciative to you. I’m especially proud of our interns for getting involved and learning more about

the political process. Lastly, thank you to all who cast votes.

I will work tirelessly to represent

the best interests of all residents in our district.”

In a Nov. 6 message to his supporters on Facebook, Kulkarni said he was “not done fighting for our future.”

“Our campaign in (Texas’ 22nd Congressional District) has always been about bringing real representation to our communities and ensuring everyone has a voice in our political system,”

Parks Youth Ranch offers respite for homeless kids, teens
