Unique presentation doesn’t distract from Men In Kilts’ mission of service When I first saw the Men In Kilts logo and read about their mission – as well as how they did it – it certainly was eye-catching. Which is probably the point of having workers dressed in kilts as opposed to traditional clothing. But the unique attire and public persona shouldn’t distract from their purpose. Beyond the kilt, there is a desire for service to the community – a desire that has shaped the franchise’s nationwide reach, and has now found a home in the heart of the region we call home. Sara Richmire-Kent and Kristian Kent are the team behind Men In Kilts’ Richmond location, and their heart for service oozed through just from a simple phone conversation. The pair had wanted to find a way to “pandemic proof” their business plan when searching for a way to restart their working lives last year, and appear to have found it with MIK. Kristian and Sara also said that family values are important to them as business owners, as they wanted to build a brand in Fort Bend County that embodied respect between
employer and employee – and have it extend to any client that employs the franchise’s services. You can’t simply learn to want to help people, in my experience. It tends to be a natural, innate part of you that simply manifests itself in different ways as your life progresses. And Kristian and Sara have brought the best way they know to help the community to Richmond, helping to bring out its beauty in every way possible. Sara has worked in the energy field as an engineer, while Kristian has worked in construction and the oil and gas industry along with previously serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. So both have experience working as part of a team for the betterment of a larger goal – and that’s exactly what they wish to do in Fort Bend County. Through service, family values and a little bit of an icebreaker with workers in kilts, it looks like they are well on their way. FOCUS Here’s something to think about: You could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. To meet your income needs for all those years, you’ll generally need a sizable amount of retirement assets. How will Social Security fit into the picture? For most people, Social Security won’t be enough to cover the cost of living in retirement. Nonetheless, Social Security benefits are still valuable, so you’ll want to do whatever you can to maximize them. Your first move is to determine when you should start taking Social Security. You can begin collecting benefits when you reach 62 – but should you? If you were to turn 62 this year, your payments would only be about 71% of what you’d get if you waited until your full retirement age, which is 66 years and 10 months. (“Full retirement age” varies, depending on when you were born, but for most people today, it will be between 66 and 67.) Every month you wait between now and your full retirement age, your benefits will increase. If you still want to delay taking benefits beyond your full retirement age, your payments will increase by 8% each year, until you’re 70, when they “max out.” Regardless of when you file, you’ll also receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment. So, when should you start claiming your benefits? There’s no one “right” answer for everyone. If you turn 62 and you need the money, your choice might

But if you have sufficient income from other sources, you’re in good health and you have longevity in your family, or you’re still working, it might be worthwhile to wait until your full retirement age, or perhaps even longer, to start collecting. Another key consideration is spousal benefits. If your own full retirement benefit is less than 50% of your spouse’s full retirement benefit, you would generally be eligible to claim spousal benefits, provided you’re at least 62 and your spouse has filed for Social Security benefits. Survivor benefits are another important consideration. When you pass away, your spouse would be able to receive up to 100% of your benefit or his/her own retirement benefit, whichever is higher. Thus, delaying Social Security could not only increase your own benefit, but also the benefit for your surviving spouse.
An additional issue to think about, when planning for how Social Security fits into your retirement, is your earned income. If you’re younger than full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for each $2 you earn above a certain amount, which, in 2021, is $18,960. During the year you reach full retirement age, your benefit will be reduced by $1 for each $3 you earn above a set amount ($50,520 in 2021). But once you hit the month at which you attain full retirement age, and from that point on, you can keep all of your benefits, no matter how much you earn (although your benefits could still be taxed). One final point to keep in mind: The more you accumulate in your other retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, the more flexibility you’ll have in managing your Social Security benefits. So, throughout your working years, try to contribute as much as you can afford to these plans.

To determine the top 15 businessready cities, a team at Go.Verizon.com looked at factors such as mean income, unemployment rates, percentage of people with a bachelor’s degree or higher, number of business applications, percentage of population that starts a new business and home ownership before weighting each one, according to the June 9 announcement by Verizon. “We are excited with this most recent recognition of Sugar Land as a regional business leader and a center of economic prosperity,” Sugar Land Director of

ASK THE EXPERT Are Over the Counter (OTC) Hearing Aids the same as hearing aids dispensed by an Audiologist?
The Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, just released a warning on Terry Snook May 7, 2021 about being cautious AuD, FAAA when purchasing OTC aids. He warned Texans to be cautious when buying from companies selling OTC aids, especially ones being sold online or by mail order. Many of these devices do not have the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and are actually low-end amplifiers. Many companies list these devices as “registered.” This is not the same as having the FDA endorsement. Best results are achieved by having a complete hearing evaluation from an Audiologist and getting a recommendation for the appropriate hearing device for your type of hearing loss and hearing needs. In addition, monitoring and following up with the patient allows the Audiologist to review the datalogging on the new hearing aid and receive feedback from the patient. This allows for the precise personalized care that each patient deserves. Medications Help Diabetics Prevent CVD
Diabetes is a chronic condition represented by increased blood sugar levels. It is caused by the lack of insulin production or the body’s resistance to insulin. As a group those with diabetes are at an increased risk of CVD events due to family history of CVD, hypertension, smoking, or high cholesterol. The primary cause of deaths in persons with diabetics is from one of the cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart attacks and strokes. The American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association recommend specific medications to help prevent CVD. Medications prescribed for diabetics for CVD prevention include drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers. Another class called statins, are recommended because diabetics carry an increased risk of developing lipid (fat) abnormalities. Studies show that statins reduce the amount of CVD events in diabetics. Often times, a daily low-dose aspirin is recommended for diabetics to help prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Jewelry, antique store opens in Missouri City By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Those in Fort Bend County with an affinity for blasts from the past, memories of times gone by or jewelry for all tastes now have a place to go see them in their own backyard. Blue Door Antiques opened its doors to the public in early June at 2883 Dulles Ave. in Missouri City after closing its Columbus location a few months prior and relocating to Fort Bend County. The store carries antique and vintage items such as furniture, home goods, jewelry and more, and claims to have something for everyone who comes in. Inside the store, patrons can find paintings of portraits, flowers, nature and animals from famous and local artists, according to a Facebook post from the company, among more than 300 pieces of art hung on its walls. There is also men’s jewelry such as crosses available, along with vintage watches such as the classic vintage Omega and a Brietling, according

Italia Kitchen & Bar is coming to Sugar Land Town Square, and will go in at 16250 City Walk Dr., according to a sign on the restaurant’s window. The restaurant also has a Memorial-area location According to the restaurant’s website and Facebook page, B.B. Italia offers madefrom-scratch Italian food such as pizza, lasagna, homemade pasta and Italian Wedding Cake desert. They also offer traditional American options, such as chicken wings, for those not feeling the Italian vibe. Various kinds of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available as well. As franchisees Sara Richmire-Kint and her husband Kristian Kint were looking to restart their working lives amidst COVID-19, Men In Kilts immediately caught their eye. And upon delving deeper, their choice became clear as to how they could best break down walls between customer and business – in one of the most unique ways possible. “We were just looking around for pandemicproof type of thing with which to start our own business – something we knew everybody was going to need,” Kristian said. “Then we saw the name and saw the brand, and got attached to it.” From the name to its eye-popping and eye-

catching public persona, Men In Kilts has built a unique niche. Sara and Kristian have been bringing the one-of-a-kind service to residents of Fort Bend County for more than a year now, and are looking to expand even more as things begin returning to normal. “It was one of those things you couldn’t forget,” said Sara, who does marketing for MIK Richmond and runs the day-to-day-business operations for their Richmond-based location. “We couldn’t get it out of our minds, because it was so unique and fun.” MIK was founded in 2002 by Nicholas Brand, a resident of Vancouver, Canada, with Scottish ancestry. The company has since expanded into all 50 U.S. states, but has just two other locations in Texas in Bryan and College Station. It is an exterior home-cleaning service in which the workers wear kilts, the knee-length, short dresses for men that originated in Scotland. “It definitely helps to break the ice between July 2021 H The Fort Bend Business Journal
a business and customer,” Kristian said. Sara and Kristian’s franchise is located in Richmond and serves Fort Bend County. Above all, the couple said they wanted to bring a familyoriented aspect to running their own business during their search last year – in addition to finding the best way to serve their community – and said Men In Kilts checked every box. MIK provides services such as exterior and interior window cleaning, gutter and downspout cleaning, pressure washing and a “soft wash” house washing to help homes and buildings look like new without taking the risk of power-washing. MIK is also exploring the idea of adding glass repair to their list of primary services. MIK Richmond takes pride in being a 5-star service and provide a 48-hour clean guarantee if the customer is unsatisfied or for weather-related reasons. And the idea of adding an additional service and the 48-hour guarantee is just another way the couple aims serve the community, who they
view as their family. Kristian and Sara both said they appreciated that Men In Kilts aims to foster a family-friendly environment. “We wanted to have a business that aligned with the beliefs and values that we had, and we wanted to be that employer where you have respect for your employees and is very familyoriented,” Sara said. “Both of us have worked in business-oriented fields, so we wanted something where it would be more like a family than a business.” One of the biggest drivers for the couple is that not only are they franchise owners, but they are neighbors with those that they serve and work with. The couple has lived in Richmond with their kids for more than a year and a half, and believes that bond is one that cannot be easily recreated. “We wanted to be able to pull from our previous career experiences and grow a business and culture where employees could wake up, excited to come to work and truly enjoy working with us as owners,”
Sara said. “The franchise itself is very family-oriented, and that’s one of the things that drew us very much to it. …They’ve been really good to work with along the way.” Kristian has experience working in construction and the oil and gas industry and previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps, while Sara also has extensive experience in the energy field as an engineer. But eventually, the couple said they wanted to do their own thing in the business world, and took the leap of faith a little over a year ago. And though it has been a bit
of a tough run during the pandemic, Sara and Kristian are in it for the long haul, ready to serve Fort Bend County as long as the area will have them. “My biggest thing is being out in the community and helping to clean the community – that’s our goal, to help bring out the beauty,” Kristian said.

One of the most hotly-contested and high-profile races in Fort Bend County history is over. Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls, a Republican, defeated Democrat Sri Preston Kulkarni to assume U.S. Rep. Pete Olson’s seat in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District, which includes Fort Bend County and parts of Harris County and Brazoria County.
Per the Texas Secretary of State, Nehls prevailed by a margin of 50 percent to 45 percent, or 155,809 votes to 138,694 votes. “I want to personally send heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who made calls, worked the polls, and served on advisory committees,” Nehls said in a Nov. 8 Facebook post. “This is a tremendous team effort and I could not be more appreciative to you. I’m especially proud of our interns for getting involved and learning more about
the political process. Lastly, thank you to all who cast votes. I will work tirelessly to represent
the best interests of all residents in our district.” In a Nov. 6 message to his supporters on Facebook, Kulkarni said he was “not done fighting for our future.” “Our campaign in (Texas’ 22nd Congressional District) has always been about bringing real representation to our communities and ensuring everyone has a voice in our political system,”
Kulkarni said. “Over the past three years, we built the most diverse and inclusive grassroots campaign for Congress Texas has ever seen, with more faiths and ethnic and linguistic communities than anything we have ever seen before.
