It’s all in the family at Aquarius Home Service Aquarius Home Service in Stafford may not look like much if you’re driving past Suite N-4 at 13003 Murphy Rd. But just like you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t judge a business by its external window dressing. As covered in this month’s Business Journal cover story, Aquarius Home Service began in the 1970s as Aquarius Air Conditioning before expanding throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the family-owned and operated home service and repair company is a go-to for more than 2,500 clients in southwest Houston. The reason why Aquarius is celebrating 50 years in business in 2021 became apparent immediately upon entering the quaint but welcoming office housed inside the shop just before the service team left for its daily house calls. I was welcomed in and offered coffee and kolaches, and even had a nice conversation with co-owner Donna Haselow – who runs the shop with her husband Peter – before sitting down for the interview.

But as far as I can gather from my talk with the Haselows, I wasn’t getting some sort of special red-carpet treatment. It’s just how they greet the community where they work and live as the Haselows reside a little way down the road in Missouri City’s Quail Valley neighborhood. And after sitting down with them for at least a half-hour, it was even clearer why the communities of southwest Houston continue to trust them five decades after their inception. They talked about sending “thank you” cards to their customers, chatting with them about anything from their air conditioning unit to a child’s birthday party or life update. The pair oozed genuine compassion and love for their community, and you could see the joy it brings them to be trusted the way that they are. Small business marketing always starts with content By Jonathan McElvy jonathan@mcelvypartners.com Marketing a small business has never been harder than it is today. Survey after survey shows the cost and understanding of modernday digital and social media marketing has consumed business owners unlike ever before. Why? Digital marketing used to be so easy. You posted to social media, had a decent website, and if you invested just a little time and money, you’d get more calls than you could handle. Here’s why: Google and Facebook are two of the richest companies in the world specifically because digital marketing used to be so easy. When businesses started having noticeable success reaching new customers (circa 2011-2017), every single small business rushed to try the same thing. All the sudden, the relatively open world of digital marketing became crowded. It’s a supply-demand thing, and as the demand grew, both from businesses like yours and your potential customers, Google and Facebook changed the game.

McElvy First, they found more ways to get money from you. Second, they forced your website, your social posts, your videos, your directories to be better and better. And the more they required from you, the more money you spent. And the more money you spent, the more your competitors were forced to try even bigger things and spend bigger dollars. It’s quite simple, if you can understand the whole supply-demand concept. The great small business marketing mistake You see, the problem with digital marketing is that we don’t understand the natural progression of how marketing works. Doesn’t matter if you’re advertising on a search engine or a bathroom stall. Most people have

been conned by all these pop-up digital agencies to think today’s marketing is all about search and reach and interactions and directories. In the process, we’ve made the biggest mistake of all: We’ve forgotten that all great marketing starts with a great story. We’ve forgotten that message matters. And the problem is that we all want to skip the most important work, throw our ragged brands and messages on social and digital platforms, spend thousands of dollars, and immediately expect returns. Sure, you can say you’re different – and there are notable exceptions to this rule – but the reality is small businesses are going to get pushed further and further from their customers, and they’re going to spend a ton of money in the process of failing. There are no short-cuts to great marketing, regardless of what digital agencies tell you. There is still, today, no replacement for a brand that’s refined, a value proposition that resonates, a message that matters. MARKETING CONTINUES on pg.12

FOCUS If you have children or grandchildren, you may already be somewhat familiar with the 529 plan, a popular education savings vehicle. But you may not have kept up with some recent changes in the plan’s capabilities and in the educational environment in which the plan might be used. Let’s start with the learning environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities switched to online classes, or at least to a hybrid of in-person and online. And even before the pandemic, many schools offered remote classes, though obviously not to the same extent. But after COVID-19 subsides, it’s likely that the online component will remain an important part of higher education. What does this “new world” mean for you, when you’re saving for college? Will a 529 plan still be relevant? In a word, yes. First of all, a 529 plan can offer tax advantages. Earnings in a 529 plan are federally tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified educational expenses. And if you invest in your own state’s 529 plan, your contributions may be tax deductible. (Withdrawals used for expenses other than qualified education expenses may be subject to federal and state taxes as well as a 10% penalty.) Because tax issues for 529 plans can be complex, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before investing. Online learning costs are eligible for a 529 plan’s tax benefits just as much as those incurred from in-person classes. Tuition, textbooks, supplies, computers and services – all of these should

529 plans: More versatile than ever qualify, assuming the school meets certain criteria. Also, students enrolled half-time or more don’t have to live in a dorm for room and board expenses to be covered by a 529 plan – they can live in off-campus housing. However, these room-and-board costs typically must equal the cost of living on campus. Some schools identify a specific cost for “commuters” or “at-home students,” so you will need to contact the college directly to determine qualified roomand-board costs. Now, let’s take a quick look at what some changes in the rules governing 529 plans over the past few years might mean for you. Eligible expenses from your 529 plan include the following: • K-12 expenses – Parents can withdraw up to $10,000 per student, per year, from their 529 plan to pay for tuition expenses at elementary and secondary schools. So, if you intend to send your children to a private school, this use of a 529 plan might interest you. • Apprenticeships – 529 plans

can be used to pay for fees, textbooks, equipment and other supplies connected to apprenticeship programs registered with the Department of Labor. These programs, typically offered at a community college, combine classroom instruction with on-the-job training. • Student loans – Families can withdraw funds from a 529 plan to repay the principal and interest for qualified education loans, including federal and most private student loans. There’s a lifetime limit of $10,000 for student loan repayments per each 529 plan beneficiary and another $10,000 for each of the beneficiary’s siblings. All of these newer uses of 529 plans may contain additional guidelines and exceptions, and state tax treatment varies, so you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before taking money from your account. But it’s valuable for you to know the different ways you can put a 529 plan to work.

Torchy’s opens Stafford location in The Grid By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Those in Fort Bend County who love to eat a unique variety of tacos have another option for doing so in the area at one of the county’s growing hot spots. Torchy’s Tacos opened its newest Houston-area location at The Grid in Stafford at 11327 Current Ln. on April 25 with its soft opening, then had its grand opening to the community on April 28, according to a Facebook post from the company. Founded in Austin in 2006, Torchy’s has more than 80 locations in seven states, including 15 in the Houston area. The Stafford restaurant is the franchise’s third Fort Bend County location, joining additional restaurants at 15810 Southwest Fwy. in Sugar Land and 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd. in Katy. Torchy’s offers a variety of tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as chips and queso along with kids’ tacos and quesadillas, according to its website. It is in the best interests of Ward to have permanent guardians of the person with full authority; 3. Less restrictive alternatives to guardianship have been explored and are not sufficient to protect the Ward; and 4. The rights of Ward will be protected by the appointment of guardians. Daiquiri bar opens in Missouri City By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com There is a new place to get frozen daiquiris in Fort Bend County. Uncorked: Daiquiris and More held its soft opening at 5211 Hwy. 6 in Missouri City at the end of March and had its grand opening on April 2. According to its website, Daiquiris and More offers an assorted variety of frozen drinks, but can also serve customers a drink “on the rocks.” The bar also offers wine, and its website says that it hopes to add craft beer to its offerings in the coming months. Customers can also get food items like the pulled pork sandwich, chicken tacos and more for both dine-in and to-go. ASK THE EXPERT Emergency Migraine Headache Relief

An update has been added to the guidelines for the emergency management of migraine headaches. Research supports the use of three medications for migraine relief when administered in an emegency. Intravenous metoclopramide, intravenous prochloperazine, and subcutaneous sumatriptan help treat the pain of the headache. A medication that is administered intravenously means that it is injected into the vein. A subcutaneous medication is injected in the layer of fat under the skin. Injectable medications are often given in an emergency situation because they work faster. Metoclopramide (Reglan) is sometimes used to help reduce the feelings of nausea and vomiting. It does have a boxed warning from the FDA stating that taking too much may lead to a permanent movement disorder. Prochloperazine (Compazine) is used to treat disorders of the brain. Common side effects include sleep-iness and dizziness. Sumatriptan (Imitrex) is available in a pre-filled device that can be delivered with or without a needle.

Aren’t all hearing aids the same?

No, all hearing aids are not the same. Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has relaxed restrictions on hearing aid sales, several companies have entered the hearing aid market. The problem is these Terry Snook AuD, FAAA companies are selling low end amplifiers with poor sound quality. Hearing aids are medical devices that should be selected and fit with professional guidance. The Attorney General in Louisiana, Jeff Landry, issued a statement on March 26, 2021 warning Louisiana patients to avoid hearing aid scams. He stated that “companies may market their products as being FDA registered to imply approval or endorsement; but a registered product does not equate to being an FDA-approved product.” Mr. Landry also stated that” the best way to ensure your hearing aid is legitimate is to seek guidance from a medical professional.” Purchasing a hearing aid is a big investment and not a simple endeavor. Precision of testing and programming is of the utmost importance to obtain quality results. The best outcomes are obtained by making sure patients are receiving a holistic, medical approach to treating their individual hearing needs.

At Aquarius Home Service in Stafford, it’s not about pressure sales tactics in heating, air conditioning or plumbing. It is and always has been about providing quality service while nurturing relationships with customers. This mantra has kept the business going for five decades, and Aquarius is showing no signs of slowing down or changing its tune as they celebrate 50 years in business in 2021. “Although selling various equipment and repairs is part of our job, we take pride

in helping our customers with whatever their problem is and what they want done,” said co-owner Peter Haselow, who runs the company with his wife Donna. “That’s ultimately what we do – we are problem solvers, whether that be performing bi-annual service maintenance, replacing a part or an entire system.” Aquarius began in 1971 as the brainchild of Donna’s father, Jim Box, as a small air conditioning and heating company that performed both HVAC repairs and replacements in southwest Houston. Aquarius’ website said the company continued to grow during the 1970s in the ever-expanding southwest Houston market. the growing service demand of customers from both the Houston and Sugar Land/ Missouri City area. The company later became Aquarius Home Service with the addition of plumbing services in the 1990s. Today, Aquarius provides mechanical home service care to roughly 2,500 active clients in southwest Houston, from Stafford, Missouri City and Sugar Land to Memorial, West University and Bellaire. The company provides full-service plumbing that includes remodel and repair of residential plumbing, from water heater installations to drain and water line re-locations. And if you need an air conditioner installation or preventative maintenance, they offer that, too. Making an even more unparalleled

experience is the trust built among their client base, Donna said. In some cases, the company has served several generations of the same family over the last 50 years – dating back to the early days of her and her sister going door-to-door with Aquarius door hangers. Aquarius has had the same four or five primary technicians for years, while some employees have been with the company for at least 20 years. “Our customers know every single technician, and they’ll even request certain people,” she said. “That’s what we like, and we encourage our technicians to develop that relationship with the customers and go the extra mile.” And much like when her father founded the company, Donna said it remains the “Age of Aquarius” to this day due in part to that unique customer service philosophy. “(Our customers) know us, and we know them. We’re not one of those giant companies where you are treated like a sales call,” she said. “There’s nothing against those companies, but a lot of our customers don’t like being just a number, they appreciate us knowing who they are. That’s what differentiates us from everybody else.” Peter echoed the sentiment. “It’s all about being a family business,” he said. “Most customers know that we’re basically a company where they can call us – whatever their problem or concern is – and we’ll be there. That’s been the difference. We take a lot of pride in being an American Standard Customer Care Dealer, a Better Business Bureau Accredited A+ Business member and being voted as a Next-Door Favorite A/C Company for three years in a row.” That integrity and trust is a foundation of the company, Donna said, noting that many of their customer relationships extend beyond the transaction or service call. She said they often reach out to check on service performed or even about events happening in the community as part of that connection. At Aquarius, Peter and Donna said it’s all about the complete relationship. The customers, they said, aren’t just a check in the bank, numbers on a credit card, or someone on whom to push new product – they’re all family. “After all, we live in the community we work in, and we see our clients every single day. If we do make a mistake, we are going to make it right because that is how it should be done. We are honest and trustworthy and are not in the business of selling something to people that they don’t need. We wouldn’t be able to sleep at night,” Donna said. “To us, our integrity and our customer service is the most important thing. … It’s like going to a restaurant – you know when you get good service, and you know when you don’t. We want to be one of those a/c, heating and plumbing companies where you know you have received

Costco Business Center coming to The Grid By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com The Grid in Stafford has its anchor tenant, with a unique business concept making its way to the Houston region and Fort Bend County. According to a news release from StreetLevel Investments, there is a Costco Business Center under construction at The Grid. The news release said Costco Wholesale Corporation has purchased 13 acres and approximately 148,000 square feet of retail space in the mixed-use retail development at the corner of Highway 59 and Kirkwood Road in Stafford. At Costco Business Centers, customers

will find different products compared to traditional Costco stores, such as commercial appliances, individually wrapped snacks and an expanded selection of beverages, according to Costco’s website. The website says more than 70 percent of Costco Business Center items are different than what is typically found in its warehouse. “We are excited to welcome Costco Business to The Grid and the city of Stafford. This is a great addition for our residents and will wonderfully complement our growing businesses,” Stafford Mayor Cecil Willis said. “This is just another opportunity that is helping The Grid to redefine the future of Stafford.” According to the news release, The Grid will be Costco’s first Houston location for its

Business Center concept, of which there are 21 throughout the country. One of the most hotly-contested and high-profile races in Fort Bend County history is over. Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls, a Republican, defeated Democrat Sri Preston Kulkarni to assume U.S. Rep. Pete Olson’s seat in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District, which includes Fort Bend County and parts of Harris County and Brazoria County.

Per the Texas Secretary of State, Nehls prevailed by a margin of 50 percent to 45 percent, or 155,809 votes to 138,694 votes. “I want to personally send heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who made calls, worked the polls, and served on advisory committees,” Nehls said in a Nov. 8 Facebook post. “This is a tremendous team effort and I could not be more appreciative to you. I’m especially proud of our interns for getting involved and learning more about

the political process. Lastly, thank you to all who cast votes. I will work tirelessly to represent

the best interests of all residents in our district.” In a Nov. 6 message to his supporters on Facebook, Kulkarni said he was “not done fighting for our future.” “Our campaign in (Texas’ 22nd Congressional District) has always been about bringing real representation to our communities and ensuring everyone has a voice in our political system,”

STAYING ACTIVE WITH GRANDKIDS

love spending time with my grandkids. I’m a hands on grandma, I like to be down on the floor to play. A few years ago I caught my grandson before he hit the coffee table. I caught him...but I hurt my back in the process. I couldn’t get out of bed the next day. I didn’t just want to go to the doctor and get pain meds. My son-in-law recommended SLHC, so I called and they got me in right away. At my first visit they did X-rays and discovered I had scoliosis...which I never knew about! I also have disc degeneration in my neck AND back. I joked with the doctors that it was a good thing my grandson tripped me, because without treatment these conditions would get worse over time!
