Service is a family affair at Sterling Stephen and Sterling Carter just want to make people’s lives better after their visit to one of the brothers’ four businesses.

It’s a happy marriage of brotherhood and service come full circle back to Fort Bend County for the sole purpose of following their passions and allowing others to chase theirs pain-free.

The Missouri City natives and Willowridge High School graduates are the faces behind Sugar Landbased Sterling Physical Therapy and Wellness, Sterling Staffing Solutions, White Orchid Hospice Care and MyMedCred, and their rise in the Fort Bend healthcare industry has been driven by a simultaneous eye for business and desire to simply do what is right.

As I sat down in the Sterling Staffing Solutions office Tuesday afternoon for the interview for this month’s Business Journal, I was immediately struck by how affable the pair was. Many of the doctors or physicians I’ve met in years past, even under the most benign

circumstances, have appeared very matter-of-fact and a little impersonal.

They’re not trying to be rude, their profession just does not typically lend itself to swapping life stories.

But with the Carter brothers, that’s exactly what inspires them to do their jobs, and drove them to create what is a now a homegrown network of services that range from physical therapy to matching up employers with the perfect hire.

Off the bat, you can tell how genuine their compassion is simply by the way they speak. Sometimes interviewees can be a bit guarded, but the Carters were the opposite. They were an open book, and they want you to be the same when you come to them.

Those relationships are crucial to them, and it’s what allows them to improve the lives of Fort Bend County residents. After all, it’s their home – all they want to do is help in any way they can.

The head of a local company has been selected to lead the board for a national construction organization.

Steve McGough, president and CFO of Sugar Land-based Heavy Construction Systems Specialists (HCSS), was selected as the 2019-20 chairman for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) during the association’s national convention held Sept. 22-25.

McGough joined HCSS in 2005 as its chief operating officer, becoming its president in 2015, and is a 35-year veteran in the construction industry. HCSS specializes in

Missouri City solar co-op picks county-based company for panel installations From Staff Reports Solar United Neighbors, the Lake Olympia solar energy co-op, has selected Fort Bend-based Sunfinity Renewable Energy to install solar panels for the 33-member group.

Solar United Neighbors expands access to solar by educating Missouri City residents about the benefits of distributed solar energy, helping them organize group solar installations, and strengthening local solar policies and building a community of solar supporters.

The co-op is open to new members until Nov. 15. Missouri City residents interested in joining the co-op can sign

McGough, who lives in Kemah and is a graduate of Texas A&M and Tulane, has previously held ARTBA leadership positions such as senior vice chairman (2019), first vice chairman (2018), central region vice chairman (2016-17), western region vice chairman (2013-16) and Materials & Services Division president (2012). He’s also the chairman of the association’s Membership Development Committee, a position he’s held since 2015.

TWIN BROTHER DUO MAKING WAVES WHILE SERVING OTHERS COVER STORY

As twins tend to be, Sterling and Stephen Carter were nearly inseparable growing up in Missouri City before going their separate ways as adults – or so they thought.

On the surface, their paths couldn’t be much more different after graduating from Willowridge High School. Sterling Carter has been a licensed physical therapist for more than two decades, while Stephen is a business mogul with an MBA in finance and background in oil and gas.

But life – and a common desire for the betterment of others’ lives – has brought them back full circle to Fort Bend County,

where the duo is making waves together in the healthcare game through all four of their homegrown businesses.

Probably the most recognizable name in the game would be Sterling Physical Therapy and Wellness, which Sterling Carter began from the ground up in 2008 after leaving the hospital game and opened in 2009, spurred by a simple desire to free people up to follow their passions without limitation.

The company, which has facilities in Sugar Land, Southwest Houston and Katy, specializes in physical therapy for those grappling with increased pain, decreased mobility and declining function. More information can be found at sterlingtherapy. com.

“This is where home is for us. I was looking for a nice area where there was a need for premium healthcare and facilities,” Sterling Carter said. “… I wanted to provide

care to the community that places the patient’s needs first by focusing on quality, communication, and kindness.”

However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg with the Carter brothers, who now have four businesses ranging all over the healthcare spectrum that are based in Fort Bend County. And the expansion all started with a seemingly innocent string of phone calls.

In 2011, Sterling kept getting calls inquiring about offering his physical therapists in a home health environment.

At the time, he had to reject the offer, because he simply didn’t have the capability with his smaller operation. But as time passed and calls continued to pour in, he began to wonder.

“We kept getting calls from home health agencies that needed therapists, and we kept getting calls from therapists who were looking for jobs,” he said. “That’s when I

began to think we could do something different.”

Though he had vague plan of attack, Sterling said he lacked the business background to make the growth happen. So, he called the one he most trusted with it – his brother Stephen. From there, the duo opened Sterling Staffing Solutions in 2011 to keep up with what they said was a growing need in the Fort Bend County community for quality therapists and in-home healthcare. Initially starting in healthcare and physical therapy, Stephen said the brothers soon realized that there were needs far beyond that, subsequently expanding into both occupational and speech therapy as well as nursing and social work.

Sterling Staffing Solutions has been recognized with both the Gold and Silver Stevie Awards from the American Business Association in 2019, as well as the 2017 and 2018 Stevie Minority Business of the Year as well as multiple service awards from the Better Business Bureau and others. But for the brothers, the recognitions pale in comparison to seeing the impact of their work on the lives of their patients. “We developed this model of being a onestop shop where if an agency has any needs for any type of contract labor, they can come to us for that,” Stephen Carter said, noting the company employs around 800 clinicians in offices around Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.

“A lot of (clinicians) rely on us for their livelihood, so we feel good about being able to make that type of impact on our community and give people a chance to make a difference and expand their craft. Most importantly, we’re making a difference in our patients’ lives by making sure they have quality care and rehabilitation, because that’s the name of the game.”

As a subsequent result of Sterling Staffing Solutions providing service to home health and hospice agencies, the brothers soon found another niche they felt they could make a difference. Sterling and Stephen were both Army combat medics, and their father was an Air Force war veteran who later suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The brothers’ aunt became his caregiver, which he said put an incredible stress on the family. Drawing on that, Stephen founded White Orchid Hospice in 2017 to keep the community and caregivers from needing to bear the weight of that care.

Not only have the brothers seen the difficulty in dealing with trials and illnesses from a personal standpoint, they also saw their comrades in the military go through trials and tribulations and dealing with those sorts of challenges.

“We used that as a catalyst for expanding and making a difference in the community. Those things are all on our mind when we started this. We’ve had to deal with our fair share of emotional and physical stress and seen a lot, so we thought about how we could make an impact on the community and give back a little bit,” Stephen said. “(Hospice) is a business, but it’s really all about making a difference in people’s lives. We want to educate those underserved communities – veterans, minorities – that these services can be a benefit. They don’t need to have the weight of the world on their shoulders.”

Sugar Land-based business expanding campus From Staff Reports Continental Poly, a producer of quality packaging products for commercial and consumer use, will expand its Sugar Land campus by adding 18,000 square feet of warehouse space at 767 Industrial Blvd. in the Sugar Land Business Park, where it’s been since 2002.

An expansion project by

Houston-based KDW, the addition will bring Continental Poly’s Sugar Land campus to 90,000 square feet of warehouse and production space.

Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2020. Among its product lines, Continental Poly produces the 10-20 lb. bags for ice sold in H-E-B, Buc-ee’s, Circle K and other retail locations.

First Colony Aquatic and Rehabilitation Center opens in Rosenberg From Staff Reports The First Colony Aquatic and Rehabilitation Center opened its second location Oct 23. The 7,500-square-foot physical therapy center, at 5765 Reading Rd. near Brazos Town Center, will offer aquatic and land physical therapy. There is workout equipment in the middle, treatment rooms, and 1,000 square feet of

turf inside the two-story facility, with the pool located on the east side of the building, as well as locker rooms with showers.

“This is far from your usual physical therapy clinic,” owner Sean Hayes said. “Our goal was to create a facility that offers our customers a relaxing environment as they relieve their pain and get back to optimum physical health.”

KERMALLY HOLDS SUGAR LAND’S FIRST VIRTUAL TOWN HALL

The city of Sugar Land recently embarked on a new frontier of community engagement it hopes will become more prevalent in the city’s future dealings.

Sugar Land City Councilman Naushad Kermally, Assistant City Manager Chris Stuebing and Police Chief Eric Robbins hosted a virtual town hall meeting Sept. 23, using a live stream on Facebook to update citizens on crime trends, upcoming events and the Nov. 5 bond election.

The trio also took part in a live question-andanswer session after their presentations.

Kermally, the council member for District 2, said the event had been in the works for several months, with city officials brainstorming ways to better reach the citizens of Sugar Land.

“People live busy lives, and having a town hall in the evening is tough for people to make with all the other commitments they have.

There have been times in the past when we have more staff than citizens at these events,” Kermally said. “These days, most people are

Kermally glued to their phones. It’s an easier way for them to sit home and continue to do what they need to do and still be able to participate. We were very happy with the results.”

Questions posed to Kermally, Robbins and Stuebing included inquiries about crime statistics, the upcoming general obligation bond, property tax increases, flooding and drainage in areas such as Telfair and even how the city is accounting for climate change in infrastructure planning.

“Thank you for organizing this virtual town hall. What a great idea,” Sugar Land resident Kristi Nix wrote in a comment during the event.

At one point, Kermally said roughly 50 people were streaming the meeting live on the

city’s Facebook page, which he said is better attendance than many town halls.

“We were able to tackle the questions immediately,” Kermally said. “These are questions you’re not exactly prepared for, but we had the answers for them.”

Early feedback from members of District 2 has largely been positive.

“Thank you Chief Robbins, Council member Kermally and Chris Stuebing. This was a great step moving forward in providing information that relates to District 2,” Sugar Land resident Elizabeth Abraham wrote on the Facebook live stream.

Kermally said there are no additional virtual town hall meetings planned, noting that some of his constituents have said they still prefer face-to-face interaction.

But he also believes the Sept. 23 event was – and should be – just the beginning of a wave of the future coming to Sugar Land.

“I think we need to do more of these to get more engagement,” he said. “People may not have watched the entire thing, but they were able to watch what was important to them. It allows people to pick and choose when to tune in. I think we hit the nail on the head, and it works.”
