Introduction
THE DIPTERA OF SUFFOLK PETER VINCENT
The records that form this checklist are from the Watsonian vice-counties of East (v.c. 25) and West (v.c. 26) Suffolk which are of greater extent than the modern administrative county boundaries of Suffolk. Diptera are not well recorded in Suffolk, with few records of even quite common species. Therefore, records are in the main collected at monad (O.S.1km square) or greater accuracy, although, in order to assess the relative abundance and distribution of a diptera species the hectad (O.S.10km square) is used as the base recording unit. Suffolk comprises of 54 hectads or part hectads.
In this checklist of Suffolk Diptera, the arrangement of families follows as set out in Chandler (1998) and updates (Dipterists Forum, 2024). The classification of British diptera starts with the Lower Diptera (Nemotercera) followed by the Brachycera. Within families, all taxa are listed alphabetically. Altogether there are at present 107 families of diptera recognised within the British fauna, and the British Isles list of diptera currently (October 2024) runs to some 7270 species, of which 39 are recorded from Ireland only (Chandler, 2024).
The layout of the checklist is that for each family the first division is by genus followed by species in alphabetical order. Subfamilies and tribes are also recognised for most families: and the genus can also be divided at subgenus level. For every individual species the species name (in bold type) is followed by the authority, then details of the first record of that species from Suffolk including - place, date (with as much accuracy as possible) and recorder (where known). To give an indication of the distribution and the abundance of each species this is followed by a list of all the hectads each species has occurred in and the number of known records (in square brackets).
Part Seven: Syrphididae, Pipunculidae.
The first three parts of the checklist list all the known Suffolk species of the twentyfive families of the Lower Diptera suborder. Part Four started the second suborder of Diptera, the Brachycera. The Brachycera contains the remaining six infraorders of the British diptera, a total of eighty-one families. The first four infraorders, Xylophagomorpha, Tabanomorpha, Stratiomyomorpha and Asilomorpha, were covered in Part Four. The fifth infraorder, the Eremoneura, comprises of the Empidoidea and the Cyclorrhapha. The Empidoidea was catalogued in Part Five of the checklist. The Cyclorrhapha contains the remaining three superfamilies: Platypezoidea, Lonchopteroidea and Syrphoidea (known collectively as the Lower Cyclorrhapha), and the section Schizophora. Part Six of the checklist dealt with the first two of these superfamilies: the Platypezoidea and Lonchopteroidea. Part Seven deals with the superfamily Syrphoidea. The Syrphoidea contains two families, the Syrphididae and Pipunculidae.
The Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, perhaps the most familiar family of flies and by far the most recorded. Though variable in size, shape and colour it is fairly easy to recognise hoverflies. Hoverflies are separated from bees and wasps by their short antennae and from other flies such as the housefly by the lack of bristles on the body. Behaviour is also important, and the ability to hover is an obvious characteristic. Hoverflies possess a modification to the wing, a false vein (vena spuria) that permits the wing to flex in the middle, thereby allowing the fly to hover using simple up and down wingbeats. A number of familiar Syrphid species have yellow and black markings covering the abdomen and/or thorax in order to mimic bees and wasps to ward off predators, although many species are less well marked, and some entirely black. Adult flies vary in size from the smallest Neoascia at about 4mm in length to the impressive Volucella zonaria (Poda,1761) at 20mm. The adults of many species feed chiefly on nectar and pollen, and are important pollinators of flowering plants and crops, while the larvae eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores, preying on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. A number of species of hoverfly are migrants. The very common and distinctive Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer, 1776) - the marmalade fly, migrates to Britain each summer, this is occasionally in vast numbers; this is thought to be an adaptation to exploit explosions in aphid populations. This is the commonest hoverfly recorded and the most recorded species of fly recorded from Suffolk. It has been seen in every month of the year and is likely to occur in every monad in the county.
compared to other dipteran families. It is therefore possible to get an accurate assessment of the conservation status of British hoverflies, critiqued by Ball & Morris (2014). For the species that have been recorded from Suffolk, Paragus albifrons (Fallén, 1817) is considered Critically Endangered. This however is an historical record, having not been recorded from the county since 1895. Callicera spinolae Rondani, 1844 is classified as Vulnerable. In Britain this species has only been found in East Anglia with most records coming from Suffolk. Lejops vittatus (Meigen, 1822), Melangyna barbifrons (Fallén, 1817), Microdon devius (Linnaeus, 1761) and Sphaerophoria loewi Zetterstedt, 1843 are considered Near Threatened. Brachyopa bicolor (Fallén, 1817), C. aurata (Rossi, 1790), C. rufa Schummel, 1842, Cheilosia barbata Loew, 1857, C. cynocephala Loew, 1840, C. mutabilis (Fallén, 1817), C. nebulosa Verrall, 1871, C. velutina Loew, 1840, Chrysotoxum elegans Loew, 1841, Didea intermedia Loew, 1854, Epistrophe melanostoma (Zetterstedt, 1843), Eupeodes nielseni (Dušek & Láska, 1976), E. nitens (Zetterstedt, 1843), Mallota cimbiciformis (Fallén, 1817), Meligramma euchromum (Kowarz, 1885), M. guttatum (Fallén, 1817), Myolepta dubia (Fabricius, 1805), Neoascia interrupta (Meigen, 1822), Neocnemodon brevidens (Egger, 1865), N. latitarsis (Egger, 1865), N. pubescens (Delucchi & PschornWalcher, 1955), Parasyrphus nigritarsis (Zetterstedt, 1843), Parhelophilus consimilis (Malm, 1863), Pipiza lugubris (Fabricius, 1755), Pipizella masculinise (Meigen, 1822), Platycheirus discimanus Loew, 1871, P. immarginatus (Zetterstedt, 1849), P. sticticus (Meigen, 1822), Triglyphus primus Loew, 1840, Xylota abiens Meigen, 1822, X. tarda Meigen, 1822 and X. xanthocnema Collin, 1939 are all classified as Nationally Scarce (species occurring in 16-100 hectads). C. psilophthalma Becker, 1874 is a recent addition to the British list consequently it was difficult to make any judgement of its
true distribution and was therefore considered Data Deficient. Another recent addition to the British list is Chalcosyrphus piger (Fabricius, 1794). It was first recorded by Alan Thornhill at West Stow Country Park in July 2021. (Thornhill, Pennards & Morris, 2022; and see photo in Vincent, 2022).
A number of modern taxonomic reviews and revisions of some families, described in Ball, Morris, Rotheray & Watt (2011) have resulted in older records of some species being excluded from the checklist. C. albitarsis (Meigen, 1822) was separated from C. ranunculi Doczkal, 2000 in 2000 therefore prior records have not been included. Anasimyia contracta Claussen & Torp, 1980 was confused with A. transfuga (Linnaeus, 1758) and A. interpuncta (Harris, 1776) with A. lunulata (Meigen,1822), therefore older records of these species are considered suspect and have not been included. Before the revision of the Paragus genus in 1978, the only species were P. tibalis (Fallén, 1817) and P. albifrons, but earlier specimens of P. tibalis checked were found to be mostly P. haemorrhous Meigen 1922. Therefore, all pre-1978 records of P. tibalis must be considered doubtful and have not been included. Xanthogramma stackelbergi Violovitsch, 1975 was added to the British list in 2012, meaning that all old records of X. pedissequum (Harris, [1776]) without accompanying voucher material or a good supporting photo can no longer be assigned to species level. There are 289 British species of which 208 have been recorded from Suffolk. Pipunculidae, or big-headed flies, can be readily identified at family level by their large compound eyes that cover almost their entire head. Due to the small to medium sized adults (2-9 mm in length), their uniform dark appearance and their rather cryptic lifestyle, they are hard to detect in the field and are often caught rather serendipitously. Pipunculids can be found in a variety of habitats where they are
hovering in between herbal vegetation or among leaves of bushes and trees, searching for food sources (mainly honeydew), mating partners or for suitable larval hosts. Their larvae are important endoparasitoids of nymphal and adult Auchenorrhyncha (Chalarinae and Pipunculinae) and adult Tipulidae (Nephrocerinae). This highly specialized lifestyle is unique to this family of Diptera. In the past there has been much confusion over Pipunculidae taxonomy, and many older records are now considered unreliable. Even the standard British work (Coe, 1966), although remarkable for its time, has many limitations. There has been a significant advance in the knowledge of this family and more recent works, primarily by Christian Kehlmaier e.g. (Kehlmaier, 2005), have clarified and revised the European Pipunculidae taxonomy. Therefore, I have decided not to use the earlier paper in the Transactions (Aston, 1959), which describes many of Morley’s and earlier records. Undoubtedly many of these records would still be valid, but I have chosen to use more recent records, unless supported by additional collaborating references.
The species review by Falk & Chandler (2005), although in need of revision, classified the Suffolk species Dorylomorpha clavifemora Coe, 1966 as Vulnerable, Cephalops perspicuus (de Meijere, 1907), Dorylomorpha rufipes (Meigen, 1824), Eudorylas arcanus Coe, 1966, E. kowarzi (Becker, 1898), Tomosvaryella minima (Becker, 1898) as Near Threatened C. straminipes (Becker, 1900), C. pannonicus (Aczél, 1939), Cephalosphaera germanica Aczél, 1940, Claraeola halterata (Meigen, 1838), C. melanostola (Becker, 1898), Dasydorylas horridus (Becker, 1898), E. terminalis (Thomson, 1869), E. zermattensis (Becker, 1898), Pipunculus elegans Egger, 1860 as Nationally Scarce and E. fusculus (Zetterstedt, 1844), Microcephalops opacus (Fallén, 1816) as Data Deficient. Of the 99 British species 51 have been recorded from Suffolk.
Records for this section of the checklist come mainly from Suffolk Biodiversity Information Service (SBIS), the Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Recording Scheme and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN), with historical records from the Transactions of the Norfolk & Norwich Naturalists’ Society (Morley & Atmore, 1915) and the Transactions of the Suffolk Naturalists’ Society (George & Aston, 1960, George & Aston, 1961). Other records were obtained from Falk & Chandler (2005), Kehlmaier (2005) and Kehlmaier & Assmann (2008).
A few records have been italicised and these records whether for, rarity, location, habitat or date should be considered doubtful. These records have been retained in the checklist until further checks can be done on any possible voucher specimens to support the record. These records have not been included in the species totals.
