WEATHER NOTES FOR IPSWICH AREA APRIL TO SEPTEMBER, 1966 S. J.

APRIL

This was a month of remarkable contrasts. W. winds on Ist and 2nd, 6th to lOth, and 21st to 30th were accompanied by day maxima of 15°C. and above; but the intervening periods with E. winds and overcast skies were very cold with day maxima of 5°C. and night frosts on 13th and 20th. Snow feil early on 14th and Iay until afternoon.

Rainfall was heavy, particularly in the first three weeks of the month, when there were only four days without rain. In all 2 • 91" of rain feil on a total of eighteen days.

MAY

The month opened with two days of cloudless skies and temperatures up to 25°C. on 2nd. Winds then turned W. and conditions became more variable with a week of rainy days.

Day temperature maxima settled at 20°C. or just below and small amounts of rain were recorded on most days.

Winds were very strong from the S.W. on 19th and 23rd.

From 26th onwards dry conditions prevailed, winds being E. Total rainfall was 1-48" on fifteen days.

JUNE

W. winds prevailed for the opening week. They then became E. and day maximum temperatures were well up, rising to 29°C. on 1 Ith. Thunderstorms were experienced on 16th and 17th with more than \ " rain on both days. Winds returned to the W. and rain was recorded on every day from 15th to 28th.

Total rainfall was 2-38" on twenty days.

Day maximum temperatures were above 20°C. on all but four days in mid month, reaching 27°C. on 4th and 9th. T h u n d e r storms were experienced on Sth, 19th, and 30th during which considerable amounts of rain feil—0-87" on 5th and 1-20" on 19th.

Sunshine amounts were not high, only 3rd being cloudless.

Winds were N . from 13th to 22nd otherwise mostly from the S.W. Total rainfall was high, 4-36" on seventeen days.

AUGUST

Winds were S.W. until 18th, then E. for the next eleven days.

Rain feil on the first eleven days, to be followed by a nine day dry spell. Day temperatures were above + 2 0 ° C . on all but five days.

T h e 18th, 19th, and 20th were cloudless.

1/01" of rain feil in thunderstorms on 29th, after which winds again became W. Rainfall total was 2-90" on seventeen days.

SEPTEMBER

Day temperatures decreased gradually from + 2 0 ° C . at the beginning to + 1 5 ° C . at the end of the month. Night minima did not fall below + 6 ° C . in mid-month. T h e only wet period was 1 Ith to 15th, otherwise there were only four other days with rain. T h e rainfall total was low, with 0-90" on the nine days.

Winds were S.W. until 17th, then E. and light from an anticyclonic Situation for the rest of the month.
