Maurie McInnis P’22 2022 commencement speaker

Maurie McInnis P’22 is president of Stony Brook University, a public research university on Long Island, New York. Her distinguished academic career has included roles as executive vice president and provost at the University of Texas at Austin, and various administrative and teaching positions at the University of Virginia. In her five years at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. McInnis oversaw academic programs that spanned the institution’s libraries, museums, and 18 colleges and schools. Dr. McInnis is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she was a Jefferson Scholar and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Art History, and Yale University, where she earned her Master of Arts, Master of Philosophy, and Ph.D. in History of Art. She currently serves as a member of Yale’s Board of Trustees. Stony Brook University is one of America’s leading public universities and an internationally recognized research institution. As president, Dr. McInnis leads both the university and Stony Brook Medicine, Long Island’s premier academic medical center encompassing five health sciences schools, four hospitals, and 200 community-based healthcare settings. She is focused on building Stony Brook’s research, teaching, and healthcare missions while remaining committed to expanding educational opportunities, especially for underserved and first-generation college students. Dr. McInnis is a cultural historian of the 19th Century American South, a multi-award-winning author, and has written or co-written five books highlighting the interplay between politics and art in American history. Dr. McInnis and her husband, Dean Johnson, live in Stony Brook, New York, and have two children: Ian and Fiona ’22. Suffield Academy Head of School Charlie Cahn commented that, “Maurie is an extremely talented leader and a kind, caring person. I know she will make a special day for our community even more memorable. I admire Maurie’s remarkable blend of talents and charismatic personality. She and Dean are very engaging people and excellent listeners. We have been fortunate to have Fiona and her family as part of the Suffield Academy community.”
