Message from the President Dear St. Francis Family: I am honored to present the 2022-2023 St. Francis High School Annual Report. As you may notice, this edition has a new flavor. We will continue to recognize the generosity of our benefactors. You will read about Fred, Tom, and Eric, whose love and support for their alma mater is inspiring. You will also hear from Dana. She and her family desired to

memorialize a beloved son by creating a scholarship to pay forward his legacy to allow future generations of St. Francis men to receive the same education and formation. You will also read about how your support has made a concrete difference in the lives of our St. Francis gentlemen.

We are sincerely grateful for the loyal alums, engaged parents, dedicated faculty and staff, and generous friends who have partnered with us to provide a Catholic, Franciscan, college-preparatory education to the best guys around, like Justin and Lorenzo. I am humbled and grateful that you make St. Francis High School a philanthropic priority.

The St. Francis Fund is the fiscal life force of the high school. Unrestricted gifts secured through this yearly endeavor benefit virtually every person, program, and place at St. Francis. In addition to providing significant financial assistance to our students, contributions to the Fund allow the school to sustain the outstanding quality of a St. Francis education by using them where they are needed most.

Annual Fund Kara and Thomas ’96 Bestpitch Now more than ever, Western New York and society need St. Francis High School. When I was a student, it provided me with the structure, discipline, and guidance I needed to prepare me for success in college, business, and in life. The foundation of my personal and professional life continues to be the qualities that were reinforced daily at St. Francs. That being said, I understand the economics of private education and have supported the school as generously as possible for a long time. I feel it’s our collective responsibility as alums to show appreciation for the generosity of others before us and the sacrifices our parents made by paying it forward to current and future St. Francis men. It was like a missing piece of my life was found.

I have really benefited from the oneon-one experience with my teachers and coaches at St Francis. At public school, I felt disconnected and was longing for something more. I grew up as an only child so when I came here and discovered the brotherhood that existed, it was like a missing piece of my life was found.

Annual Scholarships Annual scholarships are funded by yearly gifts from donors and awarded to students for the following academic year. Gifts for Annual Scholarships are needed by August 31st of each year. The amount given for an annual scholarship may vary, but a minimum contribution of $1,000 is required to establish an Annual Scholarship.

Endowed Scholarships 80%

With more than of the student body receiving financial aid, scholarships play an essential role in providing necessary funding for St. Francis High School students. These vital sources of assistance come through both endowed and annual scholarships established by donors who want to help and recognize deserving students while strengthening our school community.

A grieving family keeps their son’s memory alive by helping deserving students attend St. Francis.

A Mother’s Story

By Dana Mata Our son Rich was a member of the St. Francis Class of ’96. He took a great deal of pride in the fact that he was a St. Francis graduate. Rich developed close and lasting friendships from his “Frannie” days – many of which were still current before his unexpected and sudden death in January 2021. He was only 43 and left behind his soulmate, Liz, and two young daughters, Elsa and Angelina.



When Rich passed, one of his friends and fellow St. Francis’ alum suggested we may want to establish a scholarship to preserve his memory. We thought this was a great idea because it captured the heart of our son Rich; he always looked for ways to help others. Thus, the Rich Mata ’96 Endowed Scholarship Fund was born.

Rich’s brother, Brian Mata ’99, is also very involved with St. Francis.

He was very close to his brother and instrumental in creating the tailgate fundraiser and its subsequent success.



We feel a heartfelt connection to St. Francis in ways too difficult to describe in just a few words, as the support the faculty and administration give the young men who attend the school is second to none. We have witnessed young teenage boys grow and develop academically, athletically, in the arts, and generally become good St. Francis men. They form lifelong connections.

It is impressive.

By contributing to the St. Francis Endowment, you can continue to enable other young men who desire a St. Francis education to have one. This invaluable education will, in turn, help them to be successful in any future endeavor they seek.

DEFERRED

Establishing a planned gift is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation for the mission of St. Francis High School while often helping you attain your financial, estate-planning and overall philanthropic goals. In addition, as a member of the San Damiano Legacy Society, you help secure our school’s future and perpetuate your generosity.

The most popular form of a deferred gift is through a bequest in a will or revocable trust where a predetermined dollar amount or percentage of an estate or residual estate is gifted to St. Francis High School upon the passing of the donor. The gift may be unrestricted in its use or may be for a specific purpose identified by the donor. Approximately 90% of all planned gifts are bequests.

Other deferred gifts include life insurance policies or unused portions of retirement accounts. In both cases, St. Francis High School would need to be named as a beneficiary.

In this case, a donor would make a substantial gift to St. Francis High School and an agreed upon income would be paid to the donor for an agreed upon period which could be until the end of their life. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts, Charitable Remainder Unitrusts and Charitable Gift Annuities are examples.

Here a donor retains certain rights to the asset(s) generating the gift to St. Francis High School. Examples include Charitable Lead Trusts, Qualified Charitable Distribution (IRA Charitable Rollover) and Retained Life Estates.

The term endowed means that the gift from the donor is invested. A portion of the interest generated then provides yearly scholarships for students, while the principal from the original gift is never used.

As the principal grows, the interest earned also grows and provides larger amounts and/or more scholarships to students.

Making a Lasting Impact through a Planned Gift...

At St. Francis, lifelong friendships are formed, extended families are born, and giving back leaves a legacy for future generations.

Eric Young ’85 was new to the Buffalo area, having moved from Washington, DC. He had narrowed his high school search to two private schools. “My parents had friends with a son at St. Francis, so that would be my destination, though I had secretly wanted the other school.”

His second-choice school would be the right choice. Eric formed lifelong connections with other students, his teachers, and coaches.

He would make the most of his four years, garnering All-Catholic and AllWestern New York Soccer honors in 1984. Eric was ranked third in his 1985 graduating class of 143 students, and he was awarded the school’s highest honor, “Man of the Year” at Commencement.

Eric remembers his time at St. Francis, what it was like being the new kid in town, and how the St. Francis community welcomed him with open arms.

At St. Francis, I immediately found community among the soccer team, as I made varsity and started as a freshman. We won league championships three of my four years, and many of us played together in summer leagues and winter indoor leagues. Coach Rick Schmitt took me under his wing, and I’m still in touch with him and his family, particularly his son and grandson.

St. Francis created extended families for me through soccer, and some of us remain in contact 40 years later.

On the first day of school, a freshman classmate introduced himself to me in homeroom. His friendly “You’re new here, I’m Kevin” (Kevin Webber ’85) certainly welcomed me. He and I took Latin together under the tutelage of a Franciscan priest who loved teaching us the conjugations, declensions, and about Circus Maximus. My Latin teacher cared even more about my faith, 30

soul, and future; we spoke together for years after I had graduated, a holy priest in my eyes. St. Francis is a place that cares.

We had a demanding sophomore English teacher who wanted us to become solid writers. I’ve written a weekly reflection for 20+ years and wonder if that teacher would see any improvement from my pretty lame poetry and prose from long ago. St. Francis is where I started writing to make sense of myself and the world.

The principal took an interest in me and invited me to be a co-chair of the Lenten Catholic Charities fundraiser, where I was paired with a younger student, Mark Sullivan ’86, who became a best friend.

St. Francis is a place where friendships are born and where brothers learn to serve.

It’s a small world. Andy Gordon ’08 is pictured with Eric when the two met at Georgetown when Andy was an MBA student and Eric was his MBA career coach. Eric is an Assistant Dean, Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.

At St. Francis, my favorite place on campus – to be still and know that God is present – is the chapel. High school can be tough, and I found God’s grace and peace amidst the beauty of the stained-glass windows and our worship there. St. Francis is a place where I grew closer to Jesus Christ.

I am grateful to God, my parents, my teachers and staff, my classmates, and those who traveled our school halls before us. As we look ahead to the school’s next 100 years, I give to St. Francis High School now, and I have arranged a planned gift to help provide powerfully formative experiences for young men seeking to be contributing men of character and service in the world.

The Justinian Dinner Auction is an annual celebration of St. Francis High School where the St. Francis Family comes together and raises critical funds in support of our financial assistance program. Named in honor of our founder, the Very Reverend Justin Figas OFM Conv., this event helps make a St. Francis education possible for all families, just as Fr. Justin intended. Pax et Bonum Society “Pax et Bonum” – Peace and All Good – is the traditional

Franciscan welcome and goodbye. St. Francis of Assisi favored its use and often began and ended his sermons and letters with the phrase. Pax et Bonum is also the name of the Giving Society at St. Francis High School that recognizes donors who contribute unrestricted, restricted, or in-kind gifts totaling at least $500 a year or who have made lifetime gifts exceeding $25,000. San Damiano Planned Giving Society members are also considered part of the Pax et Bonum Society.

Planting the seeds for long-term harvest…

Meet Frederick Zazycki ’60, a member of the Pax et Bonum Society—a man who gives back to the school that gave him so much. According to Fred, the opportunity to attend St. Francis was a blessing. However, he admits that it is a somewhat difficult exercise at this point, some 60 years later, to discern how the experiences shaped his life.

Fred explains that one of life’s mysteries is how God prompted a humble North Tonawanda family to sacrifice the substantial time and treasure required to send their son, who wanted more than anything to play football and baseball, to live and study at St. Francis High School. “Could it be my parent’s time living in the shadow of Corpus Christi Church, being married by Fr. Justin Figas, or spending every Sunday afternoon listening to the Fr. Justin Rosary Hour on the radio?”

“Reflecting on this mystery has given me a perspective of that simple 14-yearold, the more complicated 80-year-old man he’s become, and the Conventual Franciscan Friars who devoted themselves to bringing the presence of God to me. In discussing these reflections, my wife Betsy, reminded me of Fr. Marion Tolczyk’s question when planning our SFHS 50th reunion: “Has he turned out to be a good man?” She asked me to think about how those Friars knew they were planting seeds for long-term harvest.”

“It’s tough to see a link between seeds and the harvest clearly, but this life has taught me that the link is real. I am deeply grateful to my parents for sacrificing so I could attend St. Francis as a resident student. In the short time that I have been a student at St. Francis, I have already begun to see the effects that it has had on me. I have been integrated into the Franciscan way of life, learning to live in service and stewardship.

At St. Francis, their mission is to prepare young men to use their knowledge for the good of society. Based on faith, excellence, creativity, integrity, and self-discipline.

My experience at this school has enhanced my ability to form my own opinions while still showing compassion and understanding to the things that I do not understand or agree with culturally or spiritually. As I further my journey at St. Francis, I will continue to grow these essential skills, skills that will be very useful in college, the workforce, and life in general.
