A Magazine for Alumni, Parents & Friends of St. Francis High School

Dear St. Francis Family,
Early in my years with the friars, a spiritual director told me I should pray daily for perseverance.
As a young idealistic friar, I did, and my prayers were to persevere, and for me, that meant reaching the goal of becoming a friar priest. As the years have passed and I am less young but still an idealistic friar, I still pray daily to persevere, but perseverance is far more than I once understood. Perseverance is less about reaching a goal and more about being faithful to God, who is devoted to us.

I thank God we have persevered as we approach the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year. We had our difficulties at the beginning of the year with a new administration, and we have been faithful to doing what we do best, educating and forming Franciscan-hearted and minded men.

We graduated an excellent class in 2023. Awarding diplomas to the same young men I presented tau crosses to on their freshmen retreat was a joy. They persevered during these four years. They have been faithful as St. Francis gentlemen, true Renaissance men.

Even amidst the challenges, there is much for which I am grateful. We passed our Middle States site visit with flying colors and have been recommended for re-accreditation. The first compliment pointed out the strong community and family atmosphere on campus in the report shared with us before the team departed. I love that they sensed what we pride ourselves on the most. We updated our instructional technology, adding state-of-the-art smart boards in our science and math classrooms. We opened our e-sports arena, allowing our guys to compete and share brotherhood in the digital world!
I am excited about the future. A new energy and excitement on campus among faculty and staff is almost palpable. We have unveiled our new “house system” (think Harry Potter.) This will foster a greater sense of brotherhood and competition. Each house will be named after a Franciscan saint. This program will lead to outstanding student leadership, mentorship, and a deeper appreciation of our Franciscan values and mission. Stay tuned for more information!
As always, I am inspired by the love and generosity shown to the young men of St. Francis High School. Please be assured of my daily prayers, and please pray that we will be faithful and persevere in what God asks of us!
Peace and good,
Valedictorian

neW students and families!
Members of the class of 2027, transfer students, and parents, gathered in Alumni Hall theater for our annual Orientation event held on May 10, 2023.

Friar Matt Foley, President of St. Francis High School, welcomed everyone to the St. Francis Family. In addition to the nitty gritty of dress code and expectations, those in attendance heard from two students who spoke about what it’s like to be a St. Francis student.
The Alverna homeroom presented a get-to-know-you ice-breaker for students while parents learned about our academic programs, the counseling office, athletics, and much more.

We are very excited to welcome the new members of our St. Francis Family!

t he n eed to s tay c ompetitive E- SPORTS Arena

The St. Francis High School E-Sports program provides current and future generations the space on campus to experience the core elements of competitive gaming: sportsmanship, teamwork, and reward. Nearly all of our students have experienced video games in one form or another, and E-Sports allows them to contribute to a competitive field that is growing each and every day.

Our school recognized the need to stay competitive with other private schools in the region, but we also recognized that we are offering a legitimate program that provides college scholarships and pathways to careers; in the last 30 years, video games have evolved from a hobby to a multi-billion-dollar industry (both in development and playing). Video games on streaming devices garner millions of views – more than most NHL, MLB, and NBA games. Major tournaments for League of Legends, Valorant, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Rocket League have aired on ESPN, and many of our students know the names of pro-gamers alongside those of Josh Allen and Lebron James. Our program is not meant to replace any current offerings at St. Francis; instead, we want to ensure that we provide our students with every experience that reflects the future.
Thanks to the efforts of Paul Bartell ’88 and the Alumni Association, we now have the premier high school facility in WNY. We have brand-new vinyl flooring, 2 air-conditioning units, an HD projector and retractable screen, 8 state-of-the-art gaming computers and chairs, a Playstation 5, and St. Francis red LED lights
to bring it all together. The space is both modern and functional, and it illustrates everything a gaming room should be while still being part of St. Francis. In January, the E-Sports coach from St. Bonaventure University, Christian Greer, visited our players to promote his program and talk about collegiate E-Sports. St. Bonaventure is in the process of remodeling their facility, and Coach Greer commented that our arena is more impressive than their current space. Higher education institutions are building larger facilities and preparing for the wave of future gamers and St. Francis is leading the charge at the secondary level.
For 2022-2023, St. Francis played in a Fall Major for Valorant and both Fall and Spring Majors for Rocket League. There were 100s of teams in the Eastern Division and we played online against local teams like Salamanca and Lancaster, as well as teams from Virginia and New Jersey. We are excited to see the program expand in 2023-2024.

21st centuRy RenaiSSance Man
By sue schaffstall“Don’t be afraid to be who you are,” is the advice from class of 2023 graduate Devon Shepherd. Looking back over his four years at St. Francis, Shepherd reflects on his academic, athletic, and spiritual growth.
“St. Francis is special, and everyone should make the most of their time here,” said Shepherd. A three-sport athlete and a member of the National Honor Society and Men’s Choir, he has undoubtedly taken his own advice to heart. Shepherd personifies the modern Renaissance man. He leads by example, is humble, and has earned the respect of his peers.
As a member of Alverna, Shepherd said the group helped him think about his faith daily. “Coming into St. Francis as a Catholic, I had some foundation of belief, but through religion classes and being surrounded by other faithful people, it encouraged me to grow my faith, and it’s helped me grow in my relationship with God. I embraced that and gave in to everything St. Francis offers, and this has not only helped me in my faith, it’s also helped me to become a better person, to be comfortable with who I am.”
In addition to attending daily Mass as often as he can, Shepherd is the leader of the Knights of Mary, a group of about 20 students who come together to pray the rosary. Yes, a group of 20 teenage boys praying the rosary! “It’s definitely helped me as a leader,” said Shepherd. “I like the rosary because of the ability to pray with like-minded people, high school boys, it is a valuable practice, and I don’t think people would expect that. There is a lot of grace in doing so, and I enjoy doing it. It has
helped me in my relationship with Mary and God. Overall it’s just helped me to become a better person and a better St. Francis brother.”
Mr. Rory Reichenburg, Religion Department Chair, and FYM moderator, says he has known Devon for three years and was skeptical about the Knights of Mary being a success. “The Knights of Mary was a club started by Ryan Harrington ’22 two years ago, and to be honest, I wasn’t sure that it would be successful.” Reichenberg goes on to say that much earlier in the history of our school, there was such a club where students got together weekly to pray the rosary after school. “I didn’t know if any other students would be interested and participate, but they did. Devon was one of those students.”
Reichenberg explains that when Ryan graduated last year, he was not (once again) too optimistic that the club would continue. “Devon not only picked up the mantle of leadership but brought many new faces into the club over the course of this year. Students gathered weekly this entire school year. We had students from every grade level participate, but what really stood out was the number of fellow seniors Devon brought in. Some weeks there were ten or more seniors who showed up to pray. He showed me throughout the year his ability to motivate others to join him in such a positive endeavor. The Knights of Mary would not have continued this year without the commitment and leadership shown by Devon. I hope now another young man will follow his example forward.”
Leading by example is another hallmark of the Renaissance man. At St. Francis High School, the
ideals of leadership and Franciscan brotherhood are essential to a St. Francis education. Shepherd says valuing every relationship here at St. Francis and ensuring everyone feels included unites the school community. “I think of being there for the other person no matter what and treating them with love and respect, no matter the circumstances, no matter their background, and really being there for everyone in the community. Brotherhood is rooted in unity, an unrelenting relationship, being there. There are things that unite us, like our faith and sports.”

Shepherd plays lacrosse and runs indoor track and cross country. He says the high point of his four years was winning three straight cross country championships. “The hard work accumulates, and then you do something that no one else has ever done.”

In the classroom, Shepherd has taken advantage of the opportunity to learn.”Academically, I feel very prepared for college.” Shepherd goes on to say he is grateful for his St. Francis education. As an honors student, he feels ready to take on the rigors of college next year. His plans include majoring in Global Studies at the University of Richmond. “I’m not sure where it will lead me, but other cultures and different parts of the world have always interested me.”
As he prepares for the next phase of his life, he advises incoming freshmen to get involved. “Make the most of everything this great school has to offer, from an academic standpoint, building relationships with teachers, getting to know your brothers, and forming relationships with classmates. Get involved in sports and clubs. There is so much that St. Francis has to offer from a religious and fine arts standpoint, don’t be afraid to show who you really are and immerse yourself in everything.”

They offer love and support to their grandsons who attend St. Francis High School and we appreciate the importance of the role they play in the lives of these young men.
future entrepreneures
By toni lamBert, entrepreneurship instructor

This year the Entrepreneurship class was full of new and exciting hands-on learning experiences. Students were able to learn about the many aspects of entrepreneurship by working together to design and produce actual products in the classroom by using design software and sublimation. Students created coasters, keychains, and their own custom crewneck sweatshirts. Once the sweatshirts were completed, they put together a presentation for administrators in which they discussed the entire process, which included the decision making process, trial and error, overcoming obstacles, working together and ultimately creating a product they were happy with and were able to proudly wear in school.
In light of the Damar Hamilin tragedy that took place, the students came together to design and produce a one of a kind t-shirt, with proceeds from the sale going to St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy in Damar’s honor. Additionally, the class was asked to create a logo and design for the Jazz Messengers, which was another great experience. Their final project of the year was designing and printing custom t-shirts and keychains for the senior class. The students have really enjoyed this hands-on approach to learning and now have new skills that will benefit them in the future.

A goal, A dream, A Legacy
By Br. tim Blanchard, ofm conv., associate editorNathaniel Lindstrom’s dream was to attend St. Francis High School. To reach that dream, he held onto a principle; better grades will open doors. “Hearing the news I got accepted into St. Francis was amazing,” Nathaniel said, “but knowing I have met my goal was even better.” Nathaniel attended school at Our Lady of Victory Elementary in Lackawanna, which encouraged and influenced his decision to attend St. Francis. “Shortly after we left OLV, there was something in Nathaniel that just loved that environment.” Sean Lindstrom, his father, said, “he instantly missed the values at OLV, so he set an early goal to go to his dream school.” When the Lindstroms moved to Hamburg, NY, driving past St. Francis High School became part of the commute, but for Nathaniel, it would soon be the destination. With St. Francis set as his North Star, Nathaniel worked tirelessly to maintain good grades while keeping a positive rapport with his classmates. “It’s not been a walk in the park,” Nathaniel describes, “you start to doubt yourself about how good you are, but you just have to overcome it.” Nathaniel’s determination began paying off when he received the news he had been accepted into the National Junior Honors Society at Frontier Middle School, an omen of good things to come. His mother, Sarah Lindstrom, describes the cheering moment when Nathaniel found out he was now an honors student. He broke into tears and said, “This will help me get into St. Francis.”
In early January, the moment came that would change Nathaniel’s course forever. Nathaniel had just returned from basketball practice and proceeded to his room to

change and finish some homework. Before he could put pencil to paper, he heard his mom call him downstairs. Is it time to empty the garbage? Maybe mom needs help with dinner, Nathaniel speculated. As he reached the end of the stairs, he heard the kitchen filled with unfamiliar voices. “My heart skipped a beat,” Nathaniel describes, “I had two Franciscans in my house!” Friar Matt approached Nathaniel and asked, “Do you want the bad news or the good news first?”. Still trying to comprehend what was happening, Nathaniel responded timidly, “bad news first.” Friar Matt extended his hand to Nathaniel, shook his hand, and said, “There is no bad news. Congratulations, you have been accepted to St. Francis.” Paralyzed with excitement, Nathaniel hugged his parents as he held his acceptance letter in hand; a dream now incarnated. Nathaniel will join the legacy of Lindstroms, who have attended St. Francis; his uncle Rodney Lindstrom class of 1978, and his grandfather David Lindstrom, class of 1981. “My father-in-law is reconnecting to SFHS because of Nathaniel,” Mrs. Lindstrom shares, “he has been going to alumni events again. There is just this awakened excitement about his time at St. Francis that he is now sharing with Nathaniel.” I asked Nathaniel at the end of the visit if he thought about the man he wants to become as he attends St. Francis, his answer was not surprising, “I’ve never really been a part of a brotherhood. But with my siblings, I have a lot of practice. I want to be a brother who will help others achieve their goals because I know my brothers will have my back as I will have theirs.”
