Course Placement and Scheduling

The Guidance Department, Chairpersons of Departments and faculty play an important part in the placement of students.

Every attempt is made to match the incoming student’s needs and aptitudes with appropriate courses. The placement of incoming students is accomplished by the Guidance Department in consultation with various Department Chairpersons using past achievements and standardized testing scores.

Present students are placed in course levels for the following year by their teachers in the respective subject area, in conjunction with their Department Chairperson, based on aptitude, previous achievement, and the school’s curriculum guidelines. Students consult with their Guidance Counselor in selecting appropriate electives and when requesting a different course level.

The administration reserves the right to refuse to admit students to courses for which they prove to be unqualified. Students who have scheduling conflicts will be placed in appropriate courses at the direction and discretion of the Guidance Department.

Once scheduled, students are expected to pursue the course of studies to which they have been assigned. Scheduling changes to accommodate requests for specific teachers or class sections are not permitted.

Course Types

Honors/Accelerated courses require exceptional aptitude and motivation. Students must have superior competencies and well-developed study skills. The courses are fast paced and involve more subject material than required by the Regents syllabus, as well as more Interdisciplinary and independent work by the student.

College Prep level courses are designed for the student with abilities and aptitude typical of a college-bound student. Courses present an intellectual challenge requiring proper study habits, as well as solid communication and learning skills.

Course Selection

The Guidance Department, Chairpersons and faculty are all involved in a student’s course selection at St. Francis H.S. Every attempt is made to match the student’s needs and aptitudes with courses which are appropriate. Course selection for incoming students is accomplished by the combined efforts of the Admissions Committee, the Guidance Department and the Department Chairpersons, using past achievements and standardized testing scores.

Present students’ courses are selected by a student and his guidance counselor, in conjunction with his teachers, Department Chairs and his parents, based on aptitude and previous achievement.

Advanced Placement Exam Policy

Students who enroll in Advanced Placement courses are required to take a local final exam or complete an alternative final assessment created and administered by the instructor to complete the course. Students may be exempt from this local final examination with 93 cumulative average.

Students enrolled in AP courses may also choose to take the AP exam to earn college credit.

College credit is awarded at the discretion of the post-secondary institution. Students may not be required or compelled to take an AP Examination by the instructor.

St. Francis High School requires the following courses for graduation:

To gain admission to AP Courses, the student must have the approval of the department. The Administration reserves the right to cancel or close any course due to insufficient enrollment or faculty availability. No elective changes will be made after June 1, 2020.

Since St. Francis High School believes strongly in the formation of the entire person, importance is placed upon developing the spiritual as well as the intellectual lives of our students. In teaching Catholic values from a Franciscan perspective, we hope to instill in students: a willingness to share their God-given talents in a spirit of fraternity, a desire to extend the bonds of brotherhood built on campus out into the wider community, and a sincere love for the poor.

As a means of accomplishing this, St. Francis High School has incorporated into its curriculum the Franciscan Service - Learning Program. Through this program, every member of the student body participates in experiences of service, designed to progressively introduce students to a variety of service opportunities and to grow in our young men a lifelong commitment to the works of mercy. Students participate in a required minimum number of service experiences based on their Class Year. The yearly requirement builds in amount and intensity of service.

Students receive pre-approval for their selected service experiences from a member of the Religion faculty. Students also complete a Franciscan Theological Reflection after each service experience.

Participation in and successful completion of the program, indicated on the report card by a Pass/Fail grade, is required for a student’s matriculation to the following year and a Senior’s graduation.

Paduan Scholars Program

Paduan Scholars Course Requirements

Mr. Michael Messore, Director of Paduan Scholars Program The Paduan Scholars Program offers a challenging Honors curriculum for gifted students. The Program is named for St. Anthony of Padua, patron of the Franciscan Friars Conventual of Our Lady of the Angels Province who staff St. Francis High School.

His keen intellect, strength of character and unshakable faith earned him the title “Doctor of the Church”.

Paduan Scholars are expected to meet the curricular and extra-curricular requirements while maintaining a cumulative average of 93% or better. To be a candidate for the Paduan Scholars Program, a student must have demonstrated ability as evidenced by his performance on the entrance examination and high achievement in middle school.

Students accepted into the Paduan Scholars Program will be offered several challenging learning opportunities. Classes will include specially crafted assignments and enriching activities designed to enhance critical thinking skills and creativity. Paduans are expected to focus on application of concepts, analysis of issues, and recognition of cross-disciplinary connections.

All freshmen candidates will be enrolled in the Honors seminar during the second semester. The course specifically addresses vital skills and strategies such as time management, organization, logic and reasoning, journal writing, library research, and technology-based presentations. The goal of the seminar is to set a course of success for students in the Paduan program, in college, and in life.

Paduan Scholars will have extra-curricular opportunities available to them to prepare them for making career choices. An after school program called, “A Day in the Life Of…” offers deeper insight into the daily career experiences of different professionals. Alumni and friends of the school describe how they achieved their success and answer questions our young men might have. Students may seek out an internship in a particular field of interest. The student will receive 0.25 credits upon successful completion of the internship.

Paduan Scholars must attend special field trips. The field trips are designed to provide hands-on experiences and cultural enrichment that complement their classroom lessons across the curriculum. Past trips include Buffalo River History Tours, the Albright-Knox and Burchfield-Penny Art Galleries, Rich Products, Moog, Fisher Price, the Earthquake Research Facility at UB, Tifft Farm Nature Preserve, the Downtown Buffalo Public Library, and Forest Lawn Cemetery just to name a few. As a culminating, college preparatory project, senior Paduan Scholars will complete and present the Senior Paduan Capstone Project. Paduans are required to immerse themselves into a topic of study for which they have a genuine interest and complete a research-based argument and defense of their findings and experiences.

The final projects must be presented to faculty and peers.

The Paduan Program is an opportunity and a challenge for our most gifted students.

The Program incorporates the mission of St. Anthony of Padua, incorporating “keen intellect, strength of character, and unshakable faith” to produce the scholars, leaders, and men of Christ for the 21st century.

This course, which meets once a week for a semester, introduces the student to the personal computer, the school’s network, and the Internet. The course is designed to teach students basic technology vocabulary and usage. Students will learn word processing and spreadsheet development.

This is a basic course for students who may wish to enter the field of accounting.

The first part of the course offers an introduction to the how and why of financial record keeping. Topics to be examined will include the basic accounting cycle, analysis of assets and liabilities, payroll accounting and tax records. The concepts of ethics, integrity and confidentiality in accounting will also be addressed. The second half of the course will exam how and why the Internal Revenue Service was established.

Tax laws and the proper way to compile both Federal and State returns will be discussed.

This course will establish a foundation for developing computer programs in the Java programming language. This course introduces the student to standard programming techniques, emphasizing structured programming and the objectorientated programming paradigm.

This course investigates various types of computer software. Students are introduced to fundamentals of computer with an emphasis on computer applications.

Class time is divided between learning concepts and a hands-on introduction to various software programs including computer aided design and drafting (CAD), photograph editing with Photoshop, graphic design, database management, and Microsoft Office business suite software.

Other topics include computer hardware, computer networking, and Internet security.

Computer based projects in a lab setting count for a significant portion of the student’s grade.

English I introduces students to the main components of communication: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language fundamentals. The course requires students to become active participants in their education. The foundational texts of English I are a mix of classical and contemporary pieces from a variety of genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. The writing process—planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing—is introduced

and is directly connected with student success in this writing-intensive course.

Class and group discussions, individual and group presentations, viewing and analysis of images and film provide practical and relevant use of the students’ developing communication skills and incorporate various forms of technology and multimedia. Practice in grammar, usage, vocabulary, research, and library science are woven into various lessons.

Evidence and credible research are valued over generalizations and basic summaries.

Students who successfully complete English I earn a well-rounded education in all forms of communication and become better readers and writers in all subjects.

College Prep: Students will read six extended works—epic poems, novels, dramas, nonfiction. Students will complete a research paper in MLA format (4-5 pages).

The sophomore course emphasizes further development of the communications skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking introduced at the freshman level. This includes expanding thought development through journal writing, developing pre-writing activities, a strong focus on revision and proofreading with constant reinforcement of mechanics, usage, and grammar skills. The literature is a blend of classic and contemporary masterpieces, chosen to correlate with the sophomore Global Studies course. Worldrenowned authors from European, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries are included. There is an emphasis on critical interpretations through reading and writing, application of literary terms and vocabulary skills, and a major research project. Causeeffect, comparison-contrast, and argument will all be significant strategies used to develop analysis in formal writing. Personal experience, interests, and abilities of the students will be used to develop personal expressive and creative writing.

Fiction and nonfiction texts will parallel material covered in AP World History to provide support and depth to students about the impact that culture, geography, politics, religion, etc. all have upon the identities of historically significant people as well as average citizens of a given era. English III JUNIORS

131 (College Prep) 1 unit

The eleventh year course is a more sophisticated study of the communications process. The syllabus is prescribed by the New York State Board of Regents and exceeds the New Standards. Literature presented is a chronological study of American Literature, including the early Native Americans and the pre-revolutionary colonists. Every effort is made to coordinate this course with the Social Studies curriculum and teachers are working together on integrating the curriculum as much as possible. Detailed preparation for the SAT exam is also included. A major research paper is required in English III and all students will take the New York State Comprehensive Regents Exam in June.

College Prep: continued development of the student’s writing skills, while being introduced to a detailed study of American Literature.

English IV Seniors

The twelfth year course is an investigation of the humanities contained in British Literature from a thematic and philosophical viewpoint. Special emphasis is placed on preparation for the demands of college.

College Prep: reinforcement and further development of the skills and discipline taught during the first three years. Attention given to the mechanics of writing and speaking in preparation for college.

Students respond to their reading selections through writing essays and research papers and by presenting oral reports.

Experiences in Film Making, Journalism, and Advertising Theory, Literacy, and Production

The media has a significant impact on American society and culture. We are continuously bombarded with images, messages, news flashes, social updates, breaking news, advertisements, gossip,

and viral videos. Keeping up with the information can be dizzying. The goal of this mass communication class will be to provide students with the tools to read the world around them and to help them understand the impact that the mass media has upon them. Students will analyze, interpret, and evaluate the power of language and images in order to comprehend how they may avoid being subject to that power as well as how they may use that power for their own benefit, for the entertainment of others, and for the purpose of promoting positive social change. In addition, students enrolled will be responsible for their own production of media. Experiences in writing, performances, and use of our media technology will allow students to put their theory into practice . Students will be responsible for producing weekly television news programs, commercials, investigative journalism segments, current events pieces, interviews, and promotional/highlight videos showcasing events at St. Francis.

Opportunities provided include writing for school-based publications, public speaking, and creating special independent video projects. A multimedia research project/ paper will be required of every student who enrolls in the course. Overall, the class will promote the benefits of teamwork and diligence to achieve the lofty goals we will set for ourselves.

AP Literature & Composition 150 SENIORS Honors

1 unit

The content of the course will revolve around the changing idea of the Hero from the classical to modern times. The student is encouraged to relate and synthesize the Heroic ideal with the writer’s milieu.

The literary content centers around four specific genres: Epic, Drama, Poetry and the Novel. Close critical reading and concentrated explication of poetry is of primary importance. The composition portion stresses the student’s mastery of writing skills, namely ordering ideas into a logical pattern, developing them with pertinent and valid detail, and effectively communicating them to the reader with fluency and tact.

Students must also write two research papers, develop a writing portfolio, create effective resumes, conduct interviews and compose effective college applications. *Admission to this course is subject to departmental approval. Juniors must complete English II Honors.

AP Language & Composition 151 SENIORS, Juniors

Regardless of the college major or career one chooses, adept reading and writing skills are invaluable assets that can provide an advantage over others in the same field.

The purpose of this course is to motivate students to become exceptional writers through reading and emulating the expert writing of others. Students will mainly utilize the short writings, short stories, essays, speeches, journals, etc., of published authors who have written about a variety of subjects from personal experiences and political views to imaginative fiction and complex scientific theories. Ten separate methods of writing will be explored and analyzed through reading and responding, followed by practical applications of the methods by the students themselves.

Students will gain experience with written expression through journal writing, personal essays, comparative essays, critical literary analysis, research, and creative fiction. An intense emphasis will be placed upon the effective use of charges and descriptive language which will strengthen the tone and mood of the writer’s work. The conventions of the English language will be scrutinized for the purpose gearing writers toward the idea of polishing and presenting a publishable piece of writing with each opportunity. *Admission to this course is subject to departmental approval.

Art is a function of human perception based on human values and experiences. Studio in Art I begins with a semester of introductory photography. This course offers basic black and white film developing, printing and darkroom techniques. Photography introduces the student to an understanding of the operation of 35 mm manual cameras, lenses and flash. The second semester establishes an artistic foundation and builds upon it. This aspect of the course explores concepts of black and white contrast, medium, elements, and three dimensional work. The curriculum strengthens drawing ability, sculptural form and design. *Department approval required.

General Art JUNIORS

A general introduction and overview of art. This course is designed both for students who will experience only one art course in high school and for those who will elect additional courses.

General Art is centered around the discussion and practice of the principles of design, color and drawing as applied to various art activities. With applied practice in different mediums, students study the works of others with the goal of understanding the three categories of art, design, realism and expressionism.

This year-long course of study in Art elaborates on concepts taught in General Art. Utilizing previous learning, the student will explore cartooning, drawing, graphics, printing, pottery and oil painting.

Transmitting ideas into art form by developing them into a sculptural dimension

through cast jewelry is featured. This course requires a definite interest and commitment in art, as well as ability and creativity.

This course allows students to become highly active in the production of the Crusader Yearbook. Class is divided between learning concepts and hands-on activities. Students will work with Online Design 3.0 Publication Software, have a better understanding of the different parts of the yearbook and their function, legal responsibilities, principles of column design and grid design, effective use of fonts and color, learn Adobe Photoshop basics, and photographic composition & digital camera basics. Students will also have a greater understanding of the business aspects of Yearbook sales. *Department Approval required. *Students must be enrolled in Yearbook Homeroom if not in Alverna or Band Homeroom.

Jazz Improvisation

The world of creative jazz improvisation and critical analysis forms the basis of this course designed for motivated instrumentalists. Jazz improvisational techniques and performance, as well as jazz theory and history will be explored in this year long course.

The Music Theory course is designed to develop a student’s ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. These abilities will be developed through various listening, performances, written, creative, and analytical exercises. Although this course focuses on music of the Common Practice Period (1600-1900), materials and processes found in other styles and genres are also studied.

Prerequisite: Chorus or Band experience preferred.

AP Studio Art 1 unit

The AP Program in Studio Art is intended for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study and production of art. Students study art styles and techniques at an advanced level to develop a portfolio in three sections: quality, breadth, and concentration. The work will be closely related to their intended college major in Art (drawing, painting, digital design, photography, architecture, etc). Completion of the portfolio demands self-discipline to apply creative talents to a variety of projects, both assigned and selfstructured. Students should be aware that AP Studio Art involves more commitment and accomplishment than General Art or Studio Art I/II. Students will be required to participate in a teacher moderated afterschool studio session two times a month for two hours, and must produce a high quality portfolio to submit for AP evaluation.

All AP Studio Art students will have had previous training in art.

Prerequisites: General Art or Studio Art I/II, demonstrated artistic talent and commitment, and department approval.

The first part of the course presents a thorough treatment of the foundational issues in Roman Catholic moral theology.

Topics examined will include Roman Catholic sources for moral wisdom and knowledge; the function of moral principles and norms; the morality of human acts; conscience, virtue and sin. An attempt is made to develop the student’s ability to reason in a moral fashion. Practical examples of living the moral life will be drawn from the lives of several prominent Franciscan saints. The second part of the course will be an analysis of specific moral dilemmas. Issues examined will include the moral dimensions of human sexuality, respect for human life, social justice and medical ethics. Special attention is given to the contemporary teaching of the Magisterium on these issues. Throughout this study, the position of the Catholic Church is contrasted with various secular positions prevalent in society.

In keeping with the philosophy of the school to prepare young men to be Christocentric, service oriented and aware of the needs of society, especially the poor, the Franciscan Service: Social Justice Outreach Program has been introduced into

the curriculum. Its purpose is to provide a hands-on experience for the students to answer the needs of the community through a person-centered ministry.

In the Junior year, twenty hours of free service must be completed at one of the pre-arranged sites. A reflection paper is required after the twenty hours of service have been completed. These requirements must be fulfilled for promotion to the Senior year.

Honors: Those continuing their work in the Paduan Scholars Program will be required to complete a critical paper on a contemporary moral issue. Independent research, oral presentations, and reflective papers are also required.

Religious Studies IV 040 (Honors) 041 (College Prep) SENIORS

The senior religion course is designed to integrate the entire four year religion curriculum. Part of the course will focus on Christian Apologetics (a reasoned defense of the faith). We will explore questions dealing with the existence of God; the trinity; heaven, hell & purgatory; good & evil; the Catholic Church; devotion to Mary & the saints; and the papacy.

The second part of the course will focus on the Theology of the Body (the Catholic understanding of human sexuality & marriage). We will explore questions dealing with the nature of love, sex, the institution of marriage, Natural Family Planning, vocations, and chastity. The course presents the human person as Imago Dei in relationship with God and all human persons.

A discussion of religious vocations, the various branches of the Franciscan Order and the clerical and religious states of life will be included.

The Franciscan Service Program continues this year, providing the student with an opportunity to put into practice the topics of this course in a more reflective manner. The twenty hours of free service, and subsequent reflection paper, is designed to lead the student to the experiencing of a lived theology.

Honors: Beyond including all of the above aspects of the Religion Curriculum, the honors level will include a culminating thesis project. This component is intended to integrate the student’s honors coursework across their four years at St. Francis High School as well as to provide an in-depth exploration of a topic of special interest or

career relevance to the student. This thesis must combine a comprehensive written thesis and an oral and/or visual presentation of the research results.

Introduction to Philosophy SENIORS

This class is designed to introduce students to different eras of philosophy and the prominent figures responsible for the development of philosophical inquiry. One objective pursued is to provide historical information that presents philosophy in a chronological manner starting with Greek ancient philosophy, continuing through the medieval philosophical era, and concluding with the modern/contemporary age of philosophy. In this course students will also study the influence of Franciscan Spirituality upon Western Philosophy in the writings of John Duns Scotus, William Ockham and St. Bonaventure. A second objective is to provide a broad foundation of knowledge that allows the student to engage in some of the more fundamental questions found in philosophy. Students will gain an appreciation for the history of human thought development and a deeper understanding of metaphysical reality.

Social Studies Global History & Geography I 210 (Honors)

In Global History & Geography I students begin their study from the days of nomadic roaming tribes in 10,000 B.C.E. with the Paleolithic Era and the development of the first civilizations, continues with an examination of classical societies, and traces the expansion of trade networks and their global impact to the meeting of hemispheres throughout the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Global I explores the impacts of civilizations gaining, consolidating and losing power in an increasingly interconnected world.

The course emphasizes the key themes of interactions over time, shifts in political power, and the role of belief systems. The course also emphasizes the importance of historical and spatial thinking.

Honors: The Honors curriculum is designed to introduce the student to Advanced Placement topics. Three enduring ideas this course is built around make it engaging and relevant: history is an interrelated story of the world, history and geography are inherently dynamic, and historians and geographers are investigators. Honor students will be given a more analytical and enhanced course of study, through in-depth readings, visual aids, and class discussions. Global I Honors focuses deeply on building the skills, knowledge and confidence that will propel students through future AP coursework.

The curriculum for this course is a continuation of the Global I course and continues chronologically up to the present. Global II explores the impacts of power consolidation and power loss in an increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced world over centuries from 1750 C.E. to the present.

Several concepts are woven throughout the course including industrialization, nationalism, imperialism, conflict, technology, the interconnectedness of the world, global issues, and applying a more thematic approach. To meet New York State graduation requirements all students must take the New York State Regents examination in Global History and Geography II.

United States History and Government studies the American experience.

Recounting the chronological developments in America from pre-Columbian times to the present, this course analyzes the major political, social, and economic events of the American past. Special attention is given to the development of American government and Constitutionalism, and the meaning of the Bill of Rights. Other important topics include: from Washington to Jackson, Lincoln and the Civil War, industrialization and reform, the World Wars, the Depression, and the Cold War. Added emphasis is given to events in post-WWII America.

Economics is a half year mandated course for seniors. This course introduces the student to examine the principles of the United States free market economy in a global context. Students will examine their individual responsibility for managing their personal finances. Students will analyze the role of supply and demand in determining the prices individuals and businesses face in the product and factor markets and the global nature of these markets. Students will study changes to the workforce in the United States, and the role of entrepreneurs in our economy, as well as the effects of globalization. Students will explore the challenges facing the United States free market economy in a global environment and various policy-making opportunities available to government to address these challenges.

Participation in Government is also a half year mandated course for seniors.

This course aims to provide students with opportunities to become engaged in the political process by acquiring the knowledge and practicing the skills necessary for active citizenship. Based on an in-depth analysis of the American political system and its theoretical development, the course also emphasizes participation by the student in a variety of ways in his local government. Participation in government and in our communities is fundamental to the success of the American democracy.

The combination of theoretical background with government participation will assist in developing the informed citizen of the future.

In the past two decades, sport history has gained widespread legitimacy and has emerged as a booming academic field of research. The nineteenth century labor slogan, “Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what we will,” best sums up sport and recreation’s place in American life. How America played made this nation as much as labor, economics, and war. Whether is was gender, ethnicity, race, social class, community, commercialization, labor and technology, sport mirrored our society. Even more, sport brought us together in ways otherwise impossible and has shaped our nation. Sport history captures not just our games but reveals our problems and pluses as a civilization. This course examines the place of sports in American life since the mid-nineteenth century and focuses on sports as a reflection of our social, political, and economic make-up and its ability to effect and shape our institutions. Particular attention will be given to social class, race and ethnicity, gender, community, technology, and commercialization and the media.

This full year course is designed to portray American History as an exciting, vibrant, ever changing discipline that is very much a part of everyday life.

Taught in the manner of a college level course, the student is introduced to an indepth analysis that builds upon previous American History courses. In addition, the student is exposed to the numerous schools of thought and interpretations that are usually absent from a basic survey course. Emphasis is also placed on the proper research and writing techniques that can be useful in any academic discipline.

Students may also earn college credit (from participating institutions) upon completion of the course requirements and contingent on achievement level on the Advanced Placement in American History Examination.

AP Economics with Government is designed to meet NYS Social Studies Standards with a challenging yearlong study of AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and a study of the Participation in Government requirement.

AP Microeconomics is an introductory college-level course. Students cultivate their understanding of the principles that apply to the functions of individual economic decision-makers by using principles and models to describe economic situations and predict and explain outcomes with graphs, charts and data as they explore concepts like scarcity and markets; costs, benefits, and marginal analysis; production choices and behavior; and market inefficiency and public policy. AP Macroeconomics is an introductory college-level course.

Students cultivate their understanding of the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole by using principles and models to describe economic situations and predict and explain outcomes with graphs, charts, and data as they explore concepts like economic measurements, markets, macroeconomic models, and macroeconomic policies.

The Participation in Government portion of the course will consist of various readings, attendance at local government meetings, online assignments, a position/ term paper, and a final examination on the United States Constitution. Students may also earn college credit upon completion of the course requirements and contingent on achievement level on the AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics examinations.

Honors students will continue the enhanced course of study instituted in the Honors Global History and Geography I. In AP World History: Modern, students investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1200 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods employed by historians: analyzing primary and secondary sources: developing historical arguments: making historical connections: and utilizing reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time.

The course provides six themes that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places: humans and the environment, cultural developments and interactions, governance, economic systems, social interactions and organization, and technology and innovation.
