Assisi and Rome
As we conclude our academic year at St. Francis, I am inspired by the past and encouraged by the future. On May 25th at our Lady of Victory Basilica, 110 young men were added to the ranks of alumni. These young men earned a combined total of $16.2 million in grants and scholarships to further their college education. The graduation ceremony also recognized the members of the class of 1969 who celebrated their 50th anniversary and participated in the 89th Commencement. I often wonder what Fr. Justin, our school’s founder, would say about the progress the school has made since its humble beginnings. Yet, I understand the struggles Fr. Justin may have had in raising the funds to build and maintain this institution. Some things never change and we continue to work in securing the funds necessary for the success of St. Francis. We remain true to our school’s mission: to educate young men of diverse faiths and backgrounds in the Franciscan tradition, to educate the whole person, and to make a St. Francis High School education available, as best we can, to all who desire it. Thanks to your generosity, we continue to provide the opportunity of a St. Francis education. Our major fundraisers are so very important for our financial security. Justinian 38 was very successful and we are most grateful for the generous support from the many who attended. I would ask for your continued generosity in support of our annual giving appeal. This appeal allows us to help many families who can’t afford full tuition. All of the funds raised from the appeal are directed towards tuition assistance, allowing more young men to reap the benefits of a St. Francis education. I am so grateful that in these times you make the sacrifice to support what we do to help other young men and their families. You will be truly blessed for your generosity. As I ponder the future, I know many prayers have been answered and will be answered. The dreams and wishes will come true. I’m sure Fr. Justin would be extremely proud of what we have become. He continues to intercede on our behalf because all of our accomplishments have been a product of hard work, past and present, and have been made possible through the generosity of our alumni and friends. As we move forward we will continue to work towards the growth of our endowment fund which will help to secure the future for generations of young men. I know that we will strive to stay true to our mission in providing a Franciscan Catholic education to the best of our ability. Our goal is always to help as many as we can and to ensure that our facilities remain updated to ensure the best learning environment for our young men. Remember you are always welcome to stop by for a visit and see for yourself all that St. Francis High School has become. I thank you for your prayers and support, your time, talent and treasures. May God continue to bless you for your generosity.
Pax et Bonum,
Fr. Michael Sajda, OFM Conv. President

The Tomb of St. Francis
Assisi Instead of heading someplace warm or just hanging out playing video games, 14 St. Francis High School students, along with three religion teachers, Mr. Rory Reichenberg, Friar Matt and Br. Daniel, set out for a pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome. Over the years, faculty and staff members have participated in this same pilgrimage, however this was the first time that our students would walk in the footsteps of Saint Francis and Saint Clare. The following is a brief account of their experiences, in their own words. 4 | SPRING 2019
Rome
Ryan Sutton ’19 “When I think of Assisi I think of the beautiful sunsets and sunrises that we would wake up to over the hill, so every morning before breakfast I would go out on the terrace and do some meditation.” Sutton said it wasn’t just the scenery, but that one could feel a calming presence in the whole place.
BY SUE SCHAFFSTALL
According to Sutton the experience has definitely changed him, given him a sense of calm. “It’s a change of mindset, feeling more connected with Francis’ values. Before it seemed so distant, Catholicism in general seemed so distant before like it was some external force, but ever since Assisi, it feels like Christianity and Franciscanism had roots already in my life and now it’s just me living them out.”
Matthew Proy ’21
Sutton says that “on a trip like this seeing and being a tourist is so different than being a pilgrim. It’s a spiritual pilgrimage versus a sensual tourism trip.” Sutton goes on to say that the trip also brought him closer to his St. Francis “brothers”. “The heart of Franciscan values, is that we are all of God’s creation so we are all brothers and sisters and I really felt that during the trip. And that’s one of the things that’s changed since I got home, I do see people as one communal family and that it’s our obligation to take care of each other.”
Sean Kline ’19 Having Mass and praying at the tomb of St. Francis was definitely the standout moment for me. I felt very connected to the spirit of St. Francis and it was one of the most religious moments and experiences of my entire life. I thought it was the most holy spot we visited on the entire trip and having mass there with a lot of my peers and praying and having the Eucharist in front of his tomb was very moving. I have changed for the better because I can see I want to live a more grounded Christian life. After seeing and hearing about St. Francis, I can now see why his message is so important. Kline said before it was mostly lip service, he would say it, about how important it was to give yourself to others, but never truly live it. “I actually want to live that now and whatever career I go into, I want to build a family and help my community and I feel that reality is a lot closer to me now and I want to really work toward that and try to facilitate that way of life.”
There are no words in the English language that perfectly describe the culmination of the Assisi and Rome pilgrimage. The experience was one that completely changed my outlook on my faith. Before the pilgrimage, I never put much thought into my religion, or the role that it served in my life. I wasn’t one to frequently go to mass, and I surely never took my faith as seriously as I should have. After seeing how SS. Francis and Clare lived, I can positively say that my faith will be something I put a lot of energy and work into. I thought feeling God’s presence was reserved for Saints, but I soon realized that we all have the ability to feel God’s presence in our everyday lives. I was always someone who thought the faith must not be for me, but I failed to realize how much work a strong faith takes. I hope to explore my faith these next two years at St. Francis High School and I’m excited to see what God has planned for me.
Liam Donovan ’21 Liam Donovan said that he approached the Assisi pilgrimage with an open mind, “I was looking to learn more about St. Francis”, but his experience he said was far more powerful than he could have imagined. “Never would I have thought how spiritual the city was, the vibe was amazing, it was just a very different experience from what I would ever have expected to get out of the trip.” Donovan explains that he knew about Saint Francis from a historical perspective. “He was someone we learned about, we didn’t really get to experience it. On the pilgrimage we were able to walk in the footsteps, see what he did, see the impact he had on this place and the millions of lives he has affected. Now coming back I can feel the strength of the brotherhood, this is what Saint Francis wanted. It’s about being closer to one another and being bigger than ourselves. It’s about serving the poor and doing what God wants us to do.” continued on next page

Assisi & Rome continued from page 5 Tim Macijewski ’19 “St. Francis, Pray For Us” is something that’s said quite a bit at St. Francis High School. For Tim Maciejewski, this routine automatic response took on new meaning following his experience in Assisi. He says he now feels a much more personal connection to the man himself and has a greater understanding of the life of Saint Francis. “It’s more like thanking him and really thinking about it and being connected deeper to him as a person and what he really means to not only this community but to me personally.”
Maciejewski goes on to say that he kept praying for the Friars while on the trip. “They are still living the life of St. Francis and trying to portray his message and that is something I really hold dear to me.” Many of the students on the pilgrimage mentioned that they had the opportunity for everyone to talk about the faith as a whole explains Maciejewski, adding it wasn’t just about Saint Francis or Saint Clare, or the Catholic faith but a time to question everything. “I think having that environment to really question and
have free flowing conversations on the trip was really valuable and something I would never take for granted because it really allowed us to question and think. At this point in our lives, as high school students we are all trying to figure out where we fit in and where our lives are going to take us. It’s such a transitional moment for everybody, so I thought having the opportunity to talk about faith in that transition was really important and that’s how I changed. It’s more me questioning and trying to understand deeper into my faith and that’s something I really took away from the pilgrimage.” Saint Francis, Pray for US.

Mark Twain said it best,
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Tom O’Malley did just that every time he stepped through the doors of St. Francis High School since 1983. “I don’t really consider it work, it’s really more of a vocation,” said Thomas O’Malley as we sat down to chronicle his some 36 years as a teacher at St. Francis High School. It’s 1983 and O’Malley was being interviewed by former faculty member and English Department Chair, Pete Cavaretta. Before he was offered the job, the Principal Fr. Leon Krop, wanted to speak with him. “Fr. Leon said I really want to talk to you, but there’s something I have to do first, so go sit in the chapel.” O’Malley explains that he went into the chapel and that’s when he fell in love with the school. “It’s (the chapel) such a very special place and there is nothing like going to mass in the chapel. I thought to myself, ‘I really hope I get this job’.” He did get the job and now 36 years later he’s ready to start the next chapter of his life. What’s changed the most since 1983 when a gallon of gas cost $1.16? O’Malley says the use of computers and technology. “When I first got here we just started getting the old Apple II’s and I was lucky I got right onboard with those, I never took a course or anything. I was
14 | SPRING 2019
doing the school newspaper (The Banner) and the guys on the paper were geeks and they knew everything and they taught me a lot and that’s what got me started.” While technology has grown at a rapid pace since the early 80’s according to O’Malley, “the students really haven’t changed that much, the world has changed but they are still St. Francis gentlemen.” O’Malley said that he never really had a lot of issues with students and that they want to learn. “I love the guys here, it’s special.” What will he miss the most? “My colleagues, especially the English department. We are not just colleagues, we are friends.” O’Malley explains that he shared life experiences with his colleagues, marriages, and kids, “we lived life together in so many ways.”
O’Malley said that he’s been at St. Francis for so long that now he’s teaching the sons of his students and he’s also taught many of his now colleagues who were once his students and have come back to teach at St. Francis. He’s also taught many of the current faculty at Canisius College. An avid writer himself, O’Malley has been published often. He says he enjoys writing essays and short stories. He has been moderator of the Banner since he got to St. Francis in 1983. “We used computers right away, I really saw the potential for the use of computers in the classroom. It’s something I’ve really embraced.” He has also been moderator of the Odyssey, the schools literary magazine. What does retirement look like? O’Malley says he will continue to teach at Canisius college two days a week and travel to see his sons Patrick’02 and Sean’04 who both live out of town and especially his seven grandchildren. “I’d like to go back to Europe and of course Assisi.” He was fortunate to go on Pilgrimage to Assisi in 2012. No one ever really retires from St. Francis High School. “I plan on coming back and going to Mass in the Chapel”, said O’Malley. “I never felt like I really ever worked here, it was more my vocation, it is work, but it doesn’t feel that way when you love what you do.”
Since 2004 Mrs. Phyllis Baer has been a smiling face in the main office. As the attendance officer/secretary, she started working at St. Francis when her son Brian’06 was a sophomore. “I very much enjoy our young men here”, she said. “You have to be both compassionate and firm with them. I tell them when they come in late ‘Mrs. Baer won’t be there when you go to college to wake you up, so you’d better start being responsible”. She also works for the Dean of Students and handles the detentions. She says her pet peeve is hats, you’d better not have one on indoors. Mrs. Baer says her retirement plans include helping her daughter with her children and spending more time with her husband Kevin’71. She will continue to bring Cupertino in to visit and she plans on taking classes with Cupertino so that he can become a Therapy Dog. “I plan to stay active here and of course help with Justinian.”
Mrs. LuAnn Starzynski, RN (or Mrs. Star as the boys refer to her) started her nursing career in 1974. In 2005 she became the school nurse at St. Francis High School. She says she hopes the boys will remember what she’s taught them about self-care, the basics. Eat well, sleep well and feel well. What will retirement look like? “Three of my four adult children live out of town so I plan on traveling and visiting them and my granddaughter.” She says she will come back and sub at St. Francis from time to time. “I’m also going to volunteer as a ‘cuddler’ at the NICU at Mercy Hospital, and hold the preemies. Mercy Hospital is where I began my career 45 years ago.” She also said a medical mission trip is on the bucket list as well as trips to Sedona (AZ), Italy and Alaska. God Speed Mrs. Star and safe travels!
