A New Year is upon us and we begin a new decade. Some may say we hope for a new year and a decade better than the last. Yet, as a Franciscan, I live my life in hope that the future holds unlimited potential, to look at the world through the eyes of St. Francis and consider all things created by God to be good and for our benefit - to be grateful for the continued generosity that so many have given. Yet, I still pray everyday for that million dollar gift. The economic situation of our nation continues to present numerous challenges for us as an institution. Already in the process of accepting young men for the class of 2014, we have experienced a greater need for financial assistance. A great number of families who would love to attend St. Francis simply can not afford the full tuition. We are helping as best we can. As President of this institution I have pledged to be faithful to the mission of this school and to the spirit that Fr. Justin wanted, to provide a Franciscan education to the young men of Buffalo. Our mission has grown over the years and we strive to be faithful in providing a Franciscan education which is affordable. Thank you to all of you who have already donated to this year’s Annual Giving Appeal. If you have not made your donation yet, I urge you to do so today. Because of your past generosity, we are able to make a St. Francis High School education available to the families who have asked for our help. Did you know that over 60 percent of our students receive some type of financial assistance, either in the form of scholarships, tuition assistance or work study? Let me tell you about one young man’s story. There are many but this one in particular really points out what it means to be here as a student. There is a student attending St. Francis High School right now who wouldn’t be here if it had not been for your generosity; I’ll call him Brian. Brian spent his entire elementary school career in Catholic school. Tuition was a sacrifice for his parents, but they made those sacrifices because they knew it was the best place for Brian to be. When the other students in Brian’s eighth grade class talked about where they would go to high school, Brian reluctantly answered that he was going to his local public high school. He knew his parents had made sacrifices to send him and his younger siblings to Catholic elementary school, but he knew there was no way they could ever afford St. Francis. Knowing his situation, he was urged to pursue the possibility. Brian attended open house at St. Francis during his eighth grade year, took the entrance exam and applied for admission. Needless to say, Brian is a very good student and was awarded a scholarship, and along with tuition assistance, it became possible for Brian to attend.

Brian has not taken the help he has received lightly and is making the most of his opportunity. His first semester GPA was 99+. In addition he was one of the top sellers in our Bonanza fundraiser, our only student based fundraiser. Brian understands that he was given a gift and that he needs to give back. I am very proud of Brian and his accomplishments thus far in his high school career. You have played an important role in this young man’s life and many others, Thank you for your generosity. There are many more young men out there like Brian who want a St. Francis education and will be coming here because of you. We can continue to make this happen for others with your help. Remember, that it’s in giving that we receive. May God Bless you and your generosity,

This past year we had over 100 guests at the regional reunions held throughout the country, from Colorado to New York, DC, Boston and NC. I want to thank all those who attended and those who helped

initiate or setup a reunion and hope that a good time was had by all. The reunions serve many purposes; they are a great way for our alumni from all years to network with each other in their respective areas. It makes the transition to a new city or town

I also want to publicly thank the Alumni Association and its board members for all their work in helping to sponsor the many events held locally throughout the year. The commitment and dedication that they have given to their alma mater is truly commendable. The most recent activity – the 2nd Annual Alumni Family Day held in January was a tremendous success. The young kids had a tremendous time in the bounce houses and the two gyms, enhanced by visits from local mascot favorite Sabretooth, Billy Buffalo and Buster Bison, and our own Reggie the Red Raider. Add to the fun, a clown and spray painted tattoos, a magic show, and top it off with a visit form the nationally known Nickel City Reptile show and you have the recipe for a great occasion. (The only way to top the day off was to watch Jason Cichocki ’92 on stage, struggle to pull 1000 sheets off a roll of toilet paper to win a race for the ‘sticker championship’ – which he lost by 1 sheet!)

In addition to the family event held at the school, the Association has also raised a significant amount of money – through the Golf Tournament and other fund raising events - used to help finance the endowed alumni scholarship fund, the annual sponsored alumni scholarship funds, and in the past the Forever St. Francis Capital Campaign. This past January they also donated money to purchase a brand new elliptical machine for the student’s weight room, and two white boards to be used in our classrooms.

Fathers - Teachers - role models

The Franciscan Order has been in existence for 800 years. One way to take a deeper look inside the Franciscan tradition is to more closely examine the relationship between teachers and students; the craftsmen that allow young men to learn the traits of the overall man. One who is enlightened by academics, disciplined by athletics and inspired by the arts. However, what is even more prominent are the men who are both teachers and fathers and how these roles impact one another. Two of the most important people in a young man’s life are his father and his teachers who guide, educate and motivate him. The men that act as both have unique and more personal experiences and perspectives on the Franciscan Tradition and how that Tradition is still being carried on 800 years after its commencement. Upon walking into a classroom a teacher may look at his students and see a look of wonder in their eyes. How the students respond to them, the course and the overall experience of education may run through the minds of any teacher. However, when a teacher looks out and sees his very own son in the classroom he may, or may not have his work cut out for him. Seeing your colleagues as your son’s teachers as well as your son and his friends as your students is a very unique experience that several of the faculty can attest to. “I knew that St. Francis offered possibilities second to none. I also felt, and still do, that our faculty is the ‘rock’ of this institution. My wife and I knew that our sons would be in good hands because of the quality of the faculty. I have not been disappointed,” states Mr. Ellis, a teacher and father of Edward and Tim. While his sons knew they wanted to attend St. Francis High School in elementary school, Mr. Ellis’ advice reflects on the impressive résumé the faculty and staff of St. Francis High School hold; he and the rest of the dads in this article contribute to that impressive record.

The recommendations of these fathers is even more sincere, coming from first hand sources. “He can discuss anything with his teachers right away—both positive and negative.” –Mr. Smith, father of Chris and Joe. “Excellent preparation for college and more importantly, an emphasis on the whole person,” was the advice Mr. O’Malley gave his sons, Pat and Sean. One of the most interesting answers I received when writing this article came from Mr. Jagiello, father of Craig. He emphasized the role as both father and teacher. “I treat all my students as if they are my son and advise them accordingly. I feel it has built a better bond between us.” As I reflect on my discussions with these men, it became clear that their role as a father helped mold them into better teachers, and in turn, their role as teachers made them even more extraordinary fathers.

Mr. VanRemmen, father of Greg and Brian, expressed what I interpreted as the “Golden Rule of Teaching” when he states, “I really try to explain things and treat the students in my classes the way I would hope that my sons would be treated.”

These men are some of the “cream of the crop” when it comes to teaching because they are on both sides of the fence: teacher and parent. As a student, I didn’t know how lucky I was to be in the company of these men.

Mr. Caveretta’s relationship with his son Phil, allowed him to be connected with his students even more so, as his son was a vessel for the likes and dislikes of his age group and allowed Mr. Cavaretta to understand his students better.

Mr. Kosowski, a graduate of the class of 1975 and father of Nick and Tim, remembers what it was like to be a student in high school, which allows him to be understanding with students, but also with his role as a father he is one of the many role models for the young men at St. Francis High School to follow.

“The Franciscan concept of educating the entire individual was what we all were drawn to…,” states Mr. Fattey, father of Chris, Nik and Marc. As a man involved with arts and athletics Mr. Fattey shows how the role of teacher goes much further than the classroom. The ideals of the Franciscan Tradition span to creativity, spirituality and sportsmanship all which these men contribute to as coaches, club moderators and art directors. They help shape the whole man, the Renaissance Man, as both teacher and father. I was fortunate to be able to interact with all these men in my years at St. Francis High School. I know first-hand how hard they work as teachers to inspire their students to be the very best they can be. When I took an English class with Mr. O’Malley he taught us that the conclusion to any piece of work should be more of epiphany, showing what you learned through your writing. That is why I continue to write for The Tau, because I learn more and more about how remarkable St. Francis High School is and the tradition behind such an outstanding institution. These men represent the notable faculty who understand their students and act both as parent and teacher to allow every young man that walks through the doors of St. Francis High School to be inspired, disciplined, educated and ready to take on the world that awaits them. On behalf of the students you all have taught we thank you for all you have done for us as your students and as your sons! Editors Note: Matthew Gorczyca ‘09 is currently a Freshman at Canisius College studying English. He is a regular contributor to the Tau. For more pictures of “Fathers & Sons” see page 12.

by Matthew Gorczyca ‘09

Mr. O’Malley offers an even different approach. “As a father I have the opportunity to see a variety of father-son relationships. It helps me to understand my students in a different way.”

All these men show different, yet similar ways of understanding their students, combining their roles as father and teacher to become exceptional role models for the young men they lead.

Fathers and sons

“I see my son in my students, since he struggled with Latin. The shared experience- and pridefrom being so thoroughly bound up with the school is a major connection for the two of us. It is a wonderful bond,” affirms Mr. Mallon, father of Cyrus. I see how these men can understand the day-to-day lifestyle of high school, teenage boys, who I have witnessed become professional men by the time they graduate.

Fine Arts

On November 14 and 15, the St. Francis Players presented the intriging mystery play Rehearsal for Murder in the Alumni Hall Theatre. Based on a teleplay by Richard Levinson and William Link, this drama by D.D. Brooke tells the story of playwright Alex Dennison (Mike Barthel) who is convinced that his fiance, Monica Wells (Rene Bellis), was murdered the night before they were to be married. Enlisting the help of his theatrical friends, they stage a realistic backstage drama to ensnare the suspect, Frank Heller (Kevin Cooley). After several twists in the plot, the truth is finally revealed. The talented cast included Colin Howard (Ernie), Seated: Maureen Mead, Michael Barthel, Rene Bellis, Gabriella Carducci Keith Hechtel (Sal Bean), Standing: Steve Tyrpak, Natalie Trinca, Nick Desmone, Charlie Werner, Kevin Cooley, Keith Hechtel Gabriella Carducci (Loretta), Steve Tyrpak (Lloyd Andrews) Maureen Mead (Bella Lamb), Natalie Trinca (Karen Daniels), Charlie Werner (David Matthews), Nick Desmone (Leo Gibbs) and Jake Lesinski (Mr. Santoro). The dramatic action was supported by simple, yet very effective, set and lighting effects. For the murder mystery enthusiast, the performance proved to be a real treat.

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? It’s hard to tell in this classic Cole Porter musical.

Fall Sports Recap

Varsity Soccer The 2009 Varsity Red Raiders produced one of its strongest seasons of recent years, with a 6 win, 1 loss and 3 tie league record (10-4-3 overall). Captains Eric Smolarek(28 goals, 6 assists), Ben DiCesare (6.5 shut-outs) and Kyle Clifford(3 goals, 4 assists) helped put St. Francis back on the map of soccer powerhouses in Western New York. Non-league victories over Lakeshore, Lockport and Lancaster helped the team achieve an 8th place ranking of WNY teams by the Buffalo News. Season highlights included sweeps of Timon / St. Jude and St. Mary’s of Lancaster and undefeated play against Nichols and St. Joe’s. Strong play and leadership by seniors Devon Monaco(4 goals, 6 assists), Luke Leffler, Josh Galante(2 assists), Collin Owczarzak(8 assists), Travis Snyder(7 assists) and Kyle Smolinski contributed greatly to the team’s success. Returning players Isaac Forni, Sam Garra, Jacob Weber, Arek Janiga, Alex Vacco, Graham Snyder, Collin Michalek and Soo Wook “Johnny” Kim will strive to continue the success this team has found. Coaches Michael Smolinski and Jason Cretacci would like to thank the team for a memorable year and to also congratulate Eric Smolarek for being voted the Player of the Year in the Monsignor Martin Association.

Varsity Cross Country

Varsity Golf This year’s golf team definitely went through some growing pains. After graduating five seniors a new crop of young players has emerged to carry the torch for the team. The team started out strong and like last year dominated the small schools and began the season 4-0. Freshman Cory Cullen led the team with a scoring of 40.2 and started in ten of the teams twelve matches. Cory also led the Red Raiders at the all Catholic Championship shooting an 84 which was once again hosted by St. Francis at Harvest Hill in West Seneca. He missed a chance to compete at the state championship by 2 strokes. Next years team should return a good mix of upper and lower classmen.

Sean Redfield led the Saint Francis High School Cross Country team to a successful season by achieving All Catholic status for the second consecutive year. The team was competitive in all of the invitational meets it took part in with a second place finish in the Dunkirk Invitational its best performance. Strong junior leadership and a talented group of sophomores point to an eagerly awaited 2010 season.

Varsity Volleyball

JV Football- A Perfect Season The St. Francis High School JV Football team completed their perfect undefeated season by beating rival Canisius 38-14 on October 31st. The win also gives the JV Red Raiders their third consecutive MMAA Championship. St. Francis was led by Alex Misterman’s four touchdowns. The offensive line paved the way with over 400 yards rushing. The offensive line is led by John Deneke, Miles Bartholomew, Dan Mangino, Jeff Basty, Alex Cauley, Matt Morcio and fullback Derek Frietas. The Defense was led by team captain, Tap Tasker, Zak Wells, Cody Buchanon, Xavier Wimes and Raudric Parks. The Red Raiders also beat teams from outside the MMAA including Riverside, JFK and Cathedral Prep from Erie, PA. St. Francis scored an impressive 280 points to their opponents 36.

Cross Country, Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Golf

The Varsity Volleyball team finished the season with a 9-8 record, 6-4 in league play and a third seed in the Msgr. Martin playoffs. The Red Raiders had a home playoff game for the first time in two years, and defeated Cardinal O’Hara in three games to set up a fantastic match up versus then ranked #7 St. Joe’s in the Semi-finals. The game provided the newly loyal fan base with some great action and great plays, but in the end Raider Nation would be on the losing end of a three game sweep, 25-22, 25-18, and 27-25. The season had its share of ups and downs, from injuries to illnesses, but this team never gave up, never made excuses and played tough all the way to the end.
