2023-2024 Annual Impact Report-Fiscal year

July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024 VOL. 2 NO. 2

Published once a year by the Office of Institutional Advancement St. Francis High School 4129 Lake Shore Road Hamburg, NY 14075

Dear St. Francis Family,

Thank you!

I am pleased to present you with the 2023-2024 Annual Impact Report. Your generosity makes a difference in our community and the lives of our young men. We are happy to share that, thanks to the philanthropic spirit of you and so many others, we held the most successful Justinian Dinner Auction in history and experienced a significant increase in support for the St. Francis Fund, resulting in our second highest total ever! Your support of our mission is really an investment in our students. Our world needs Franciscan-hearted men, and I’m so grateful you believe that as much as I do.

Once again, we have included stories from some of those who have loyally supported the mission of SFHS over the past fiscal year. You will hear from alums Adam, Keith, and Dennis, who each explain why their respective experiences are essential to them and why it is important to give back now so that their younger St. Francis brothers can share in this life-changing opportunity. Lori, an alumni parent, shares her experience with the loss of her beloved son JJ’ 13, who passed too soon but whose memory is honored with an endowed scholarship fund and an annual athletic award.

I once heard this report referred to as “just a list of names”, but I firmly believe it is so much more. Every single person recognized within this document has been prayed for by name by our students, faculty, staff, and the friars. Everyone has a story of why St. Francis is important to them and their families.

2024

You will often hear me say, “Our guys are the best around.” I say this because I truly believe they are the best! For almost a century, we have been forming men instilled with the values of Excellence, Respect, Humility, and Fraternity., As we prepare for the next 100 years, we are confident that St. Francis High School provides a Franciscan Foundation of Excellence and will continue to do so through the grace of God, the intercession of Saint Francis, and your continued generosity.

Peace and good,

The collective investment you and so many others make in our young men makes a difference. Your financial support gives all qualified students equal access to a St. Francis High School education, providing them with a path to success and allowing them to maximize their potential.

Every Gift Counts

Most people cannot afford to establish an endowed fund but choose to make a gift appropriate to their means and support the people, programs and places at St. Francis High School that are closest to their passions, interests and hearts.  Gifts of ALL sizes are appreciated and needed and we are truly grateful for the ongoing support of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends.

Paying It Forward

Adam Bartell ’91

As I look back, my time at St. Francis High School had a huge impact on my growth, development and ultimately on my future. But, what about my experience was it that made the difference? As one would expect, St. Francis provided an excellent education, athletic programs, extra-curricular opportunities and events, but to me it was always the about the people. The friars, the faculty/staff, the coaches and of course my classmates and fellow alumni.

I learned that St. Francis High School was, at its core, a community of people dedicated to and working toward something greater than themselves... generously giving of their time, attention and care to foster our development in the Franciscan tradition. Being a part of the St. Francis Family certainly prepared me academically and athletically, but most importantly I was prepared for the future due to the sense of self I had developed, which I can only attribute to my family and the four important years I spent at St. Francis. Of course, there were many unknowns and uncertainties after graduation in May of 1991, but I was confident in my abilities to meet challenges and achieve future success due to the foundation I was building on.

“I JUST WANT TO DO MY PART TO STAY INVOLVED, SUPPORT THE SCHOOL AND HELP PROVIDE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY AND EXPERIENCE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS OF YOUNG MEN.”

Fast forward nearly 35 years and I’m grateful for the enduring friendships made during my time at St. Francis as well as those made over the years across the extended alumni family. I’ve certainly benefitted in many ways from being part of the SFHS community, so I just want to do my part to stay involved, support the school and help provide the same opportunity and experience to future generations of young men.

Four years ago, Damone Allen ’25 arrived on campus a bit unsure of himself and what to expect. Today he embraces and embodies the St. Francis High School brotherhood.

“One word came to mind when I was looking for a new start from public school: community. That is exactly what I found when I came here. My freshman year, I thought I was by myself because I didn’t know anybody but as soon as I went into homeroom, I had a lot of students help me find my classes and introduce me to people. I knew almost right away that St. Francis was different and special. My hope for St. Francis is that we continue to offer the best in WNY when it comes to academics and give future students the chance that I was given when I first came here. I am now doing my best to pass on the brotherhood that was extended to me when I was a freshman. As I continue to grow as student and as a person, I encourage others to branch out and try new things and offer help when needed.”

“St. Francis has given me the opportunity to become the best version of myself. The cultural difference between St. Francis and other schools is like night and day. I am surrounded by teachers, coaches, classmates, and teammates that are constantly pushing me to go past my limits. St. Francis has changed my life and is allowing me to become the man God wants me to be.

In the eighth grade I made the decision to go to St. Francis because I had hopes of playing college football. While the football program is wonderful and has not disappointed me; I realized shortly after my freshman year started, that St. Francis has much more to offer. St. Francis has allowed me to meet new people from other towns, take dual-enrollment classes, and try new sports and clubs other schools don’t offer. While I originally came for sports, I 100% stayed because of the brotherhood and opportunities.”

Scholarships

Annual Scholarships

Annual scholarships are funded by yearly gifts from donors and awarded to students for the following academic year. Gifts for Annual Scholarships are needed by August 31st of each year. The amount given for an annual scholarship is flexible, but a minimum contribution of $1,000 is required to establish an Annual Scholarship.

Endowed Scholarships

With more than 80% of the student body receiving financial aid, scholarships play an essential role in providing necessary funding for St. Francis High School students. These vital sources of assistance come through both endowed and annual scholarships established by donors who want to help and recognize deserving students while strengthening our school community.

Establishing an Endowed Scholarship...

Creates annual awards to students indefinitely

Honors the memory and/or legacy of an individual(s) who have significantly influenced yourself and others as positive role models

Provides sustainable funding for the nancial aid program in perpetuity

For more information on establishing an Endowed or Annual Scholarship at St. Francis High School, please contact Paul Bartell ’88 in the Institutional Advancement O ce at 716-627-1200 ext. 465 or bartellp@stfrancishigh.org

JASON’ S

STORY:

Gone, but never forgotten. Forever in our hearts.

Our son Jason was a proud member of the Class of 2013. Growing up, he was a healthy, all-American kid who played tee ball, baseball, soccer, hockey, and swimming. Always a teacher’s favorite, he gained the confidence to recognize that he could accomplish whatever goals he set for himself with hard work and dedicated effort. JJ, as his friends and family called him, exemplified what it means to be a standout student-athlete and a St. Francis Renaissance Man. At the 2013 Baccalaureate Mass, he was recognized with the Student-Athlete of the Year Award as he had consistently excelled in the classroom, on the soccer field, and on the ice.

Earning an Appointment to the United States Naval Academy in June 2013, JJ reported with the Class of 2017 for Induction Day, exactly one month after his high school graduation, taking an oath as a Midshipman to serve and protect the United States of America from all enemies foreign and domestic. His goal was to graduate with an Honors Economics degree and to earn a commission as a Naval Officer as a Naval Pilot. He was invited to join the Men’s ice hockey team, where he was honored to be named a Captain of the team for the 2016 - 2017 season. He continued to excel as a student, achieving the top academic honor of the Superintendent’s List while excelling in his military obligations required of all Naval Academy Midshipmen and taking on leadership roles within his Company.

In August 2016, just prior to his 1st Class year, Senior year, at the Naval Academy, JJ was diagnosed with leukemia. In mid-November, he was granted his first-choice service selection to be commissioned as a Naval Aviation Officer upon graduation; however, on November 27, 2016, due to complications related to his leukemia treatment, Jason passed away peacefully at the age of 21, surrounded by family and friends after being ’pinned’ with Navy Pilot wings. He left behind so many who miss him terribly, including two older sisters, Janelle and Casey, a dedicated girlfriend, teammates, company-mates, and an incredible number of friends.

In 2017, the 1C MIDN Jason D Jablonski Warrior Spirit Award was established and awarded annually to the Men’s Navy Hockey team member, who best demonstrates the traits of perseverance, tenacity, and selflessness – Jason’s trademark qualities.

In 2018, in his first year of eligibility, Jason “JJ” Jablonski was inducted posthumously into the Fr. Rufinus Niedzwiecki Athletic Hall of Fame at St. Francis High School for his performance on the soccer, ice hockey, and track and field teams.

In December 2021, Joe and Lori Jablonski were posthumously presented with Jason’s diploma from the United States Naval Academy.

In his Advanced Directives, JJ indicated the desire to address the unique needs of Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) who are diagnosed with cancer. As a result, a 501c3 public charity called Jabs for Life Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Fellowship, Inc. has been established. Sadly, there are virtually zero resources, research, or clinical trials available for this age group today. We are compelled to pursue JJ’s final wishes to improve the resources and treatment options available for AYAs facing a cancer battle and support for their circle of loved ones who stand by them through their fight. This is the foundational premise behind the Jabs for Life mission to raise awareness of this age group’s unique challenges and to improve treatment options, clinical outcomes, and the quality of life for all impacted by an AYA cancer diagnosis, including their circle of loved ones.

Additionally, we recognize that attending St. Francis High School played a significant role in JJ becoming the man he was. We are confident he would want us to help make a St. Francis education accessible for young men who possess his attributes. As a result, the Jason “JJ” Jablonski ’13 Warrior Scholarship Fund was established in 2019 in honor of our son Jason, who is remembered as a man of impeccable character and integrity who embodied and embraced leadership, teamwork, humility, hard work, and brotherhood. He was the true definition of a leader, valuing the team above himself and improving those around him while always staying humble. He continually demonstrated perseverance through evidence of overcoming obstacles to reach challenging goals through hard work, practice, and focus. He was dedicated to serving others and being a part of something bigger than himself. Incredibly, he continues to influence those who knew him and many who never met him but have learned about the young man he had become.

A natural leader who truly valued the team above himself JJ had the innate ability to be both encouraging and commanding while upholding the hallmark humbleness of a St. Francis gentleman and a United States Naval Academy Midshipman. Donations to support the Jason “JJ” Jablonski ’13 Warrior Scholarship Fund are greatly appreciated. The goal is to make a St. Francis education attainable for young men who demonstrate similar attributes as JJ. This scholarship fund ensures that our son will continue to have a lasting impact on St. Francis High School.

The term endowed means that the gift from the donor is invested. A portion of the interest generated then provides yearly scholarships for students, while the principal from the original gift is never used. As the principal grows, the interest earned also grows and provides larger amounts and/or more scholarships to students.

A minimum establishing gift of $30,000 is needed as principal for at least one year before an award from an endowed scholarship fund can be presented to a student. Endowed scholarships may be funded through donations of cash, securities or real estate and a fund may be established cumulatively over a period of two years. Gifts of any size may be added to an established fund at any time.

By contributing to the St. Francis Endowment, you can continue to enable other young men who desire a St. Francis education to have one.

Dennis Billittier ’86

I spent four great years at St. Francis High School. The teachers in the classroom and the friendships and relationships I built there played a significant role in forming the person I am today. Those friendships have persevered through time and the experience of a St. Francis education has proven valuable in many different aspects of my life’s journey.

As an Alum, I feel it’s important for me to contribute to ensure this opportunity exists for generations to come. I believe it’s our responsibility as alums to help perpetuate the traditions, history, mission and successes of St. Francis High School in an ever- changing world. To that end, my wife Cindy and I have included St. Francis High School as part of our estate planning as a way to recognize and help carry on the exceptional work of the friars and lay people who make St. Francis so special.

We’re honored to do this and, in the spirit of Francis, I encourage my St. Francis brothers to consider the important role our alma mater played in their lives and to pay it forward in a similar way.

As St. Francis gave of himself, so too should we.

“AS ST. FRANCIS GAVE OF HIMSELF, SO TOO SHOULD WE.”

The Justinian Dinner Auction is an annual celebration of St. Francis High School where the St. Francis Family comes together and raises critical funds in support of our financial assistance program. Named in honor of our founder, the Very Reverend Justin Figas OFM Conv., this event helps make a St. Francis education possible for all families, just as Fr. Justin intended. Held on May 5, 2024, this year’s Justinian was co-chaired by Fr. Matt Foley, President, John and JoAnn Tebeau (Jack ’25), Kelly and Tim Farrell (Colin ’22, Charlie ’24) Heidi and Peter ’96 Suffoletto (Adam ’24, Jake ’25).

Justinian XLII

It is through the collective generosity of the St. Francis Family that current and future students will receive the same life changing experience that nearly 7,000 alumni have for almost a century. St. Francis High School is fortunate to have a growing number of supporters who believe in the school’s mission and are committed to “paying it forward” by contributing to the school in many different ways.

Pax et Bonum Society

“Pax et Bonum” – Peace and All Good – is the traditional Franciscan welcome and goodbye. St. Francis of Assisi favored its use and often began and ended his sermons and letters with the phrase. Pax et Bonum is also the name of the Giving Society at St. Francis High School.

Keith Bantle ’95

My experience at St. Francis shaped me in various ways. First and foremost, it taught me academic and religious discipline, attention to detail, and the pursuit of excellence, all of which are critical in my life today, both personally and professionally. My teachers, the administration, and our brotherhood instilled in me the confidence and resilience to push myself further, never allowing me to simply settle for anything less than I was capable of achieving. Courses, studying, and homework were rigorous at times, which led me to knowing what was necessary to succeed. This also fully prepared me for the next step in my academic career at The Citadel, and St. Francis had already provided me with the requisite blueprint to continue growing and becoming ’a whole man’. As a cadet, I had to further advance the formative education and experience that St. Francis had provided.

“GIVINGBACK TO ST. FRANCIS FOR THE FOUNDATION IT PROVIDED ME IS AN EASY ANDPURPOSEFULDECISION, AND I HOPE THE NEXT GENERATIONS OF YOUNGMEN WHO FOLLOW IN OUR FOOT STEPS HAVE AN EQUALLY UNIQUE AND UNPARALLELED EXPERIENCE.”

The culmination of these two unique learning environments created a desire to continue furthering my education and obtain my MBA, which included international experience, then quickly led me to begin working as a business consultant in the public and private sectors, and ultimately creating the path for me starting my own company, leading our team, continuing our rapid growth, and serving industry leading customers across the US and internationally, delivering to meet their critical power needs.

While my graduation took place nearly thirty years ago, the preparatory life lessons and the enduring friendships I made at St. Francis have stood the test of time and are more impactful and meaningful to me now more than ever. Giving back to St. Francis for the foundation it provided me is an easy and purposeful decision, and I hope the next generations of young men who follow in our footsteps have an equally unique and unparalleled experience.

Pax et Bonum Society

Membership is extended to those that make restricted, unrestricted, or in-kind gifts totaling $500 each fiscal year. In addition, those who have made lifetime gifts extending $25,000 or who are members of the San Damiano Planned Giving Society are considered permanent members.

This place has always been like a second home to me.

“This place has always been like a second home to me. I have brothers who challenge and support me all the way and a faculty that helped me remain focused on my academics. I never wanted to have regrets, so I took every opportunity St. Francis offered me from the stage to the athletic field. I am definitely more comfortable with who I am and it is because of the culture of belonging here; I really think that is the story of brotherhood. The academic program here has prepared me to take on the demands of college, and I am happy to say that I am attending my dream school, Notre Dame.”
