Excitement is in the air, and through the generosity of alums and friends of St. Francis we are able to move forward with construction of our Athletic Complex Redevelopment Project. What was close to becoming a reality is now at the stage that the dream of many young men will come to fruition. In the fall edition of the TAU I wrote to let you know about the generosity of the Gacioch family, Bill and Nancy along with their sons David’84 and Michael’86 for their donation of one million dollars. Today, I am overjoyed to let you know that John and Mary Ann Mastrantoni have joined our development project with a one million dollar gift for this project. John is an alum from the class of l976 who with his wife live in the Cleveland area and have been most generous with gifts to Annual Giving. Together with a major gift from our new Province, Our Lady of the Angels, and the Polian family, we have 75% of our four million dollar goal. In early December, we began the public phase of this project and I ask that you consider a gift towards completion of our goal. We do need your help. If you misplaced the material that we sent, you can donate through the school’s website. Certainly, I continue to pray for the success of this project and many other projects that are on the horizon. I am convinced that my prayers to Fr. Justin Figas and Fr. Nelson Baker have been answered, and that they will continue to watch over us and intercede on our behalf. The 2014-2015 Annual Giving Appeal is off to a great start, and I am very grateful for your generosity towards helping us to help many families who need assistance to send their sons to St. Francis. Funds raised through Annual Giving are primarily used to fund tuition assistance here, and I ask for your continued support. Whatever gift you send matters and is a great help in meeting the financial needs of others. ALUMNI EVENTS On Saturday, January 17th the Alumni Association hosted its 7th Annual Family Day on the campus of St. Francis High School. The over 250 in attendance enjoyed a day of family fun complete with bounce houses, miniature golf, face painting, open gym and lunch. Highlights included appearances by Sabretooth from the Buffalo Sabres and our very own Reggie the Red Raider, as well as a show from Jeff Musial of Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics. Many thanks to all who attended. We look forward to another great event next year!

INTERNATIONAL BROTHERS
Let’s say just for the sake of argument that it’s roughly 7000 miles from Athol Springs, NY to mainland China. Seems like a world away, and it is. A different language, a different culture, a different educational system. In many ways a totally different world than we are used to here in the US, and the little corner of the globe that St. Francis High School calls home, Athol Springs NY. Mr. Thomas Braunscheidel, Principal of St. Francis High School, said he truly believes in the International program at St. Francis High School, so much so that he walks the walk, and is not just giving lip service to the program. He and his family have been hosting not one, but two International students over the last few years. According to Braunscheidel, the International program began 5 years ago in the Fall of 2009 with a few students being hosted by current parents, and by the spring semester that number grew to 7. Due to the increasing demand for students who wanted to come to the US for high school in hopes of attending American Colleges, St. Francis High School made a connection with an agent who places International students in American schools.
At this time, Fr. Michael, President of St. Francis, and Braunscheidel thought it would be advantageous for the school, who was no stranger to a residence program, to once again offer an on campus residence option in addition to home stays. This year marks the fourth year that the St. Anthony Residence has been open, and will see students who have been here since they were freshman, graduate in May, having received all of their high school education at St. Francis.

Guan Zheng Li- is from Changchu in Northeastern China, he chose Jack as his “American name”. Jack has lived in the St. Anthony Residence for the past four years along with his cousin “Jason” Li. Young teens when they arrived here, these young men had little knowledge of the United States except what they have seen on TV. Jack said he thought Americans would be more racist than has been his experience. He also said he was told that he was going to get fat living in America. “I’ve put on a couple of pounds since I started living here, but nothing major”. Language has definitely been the most difficult obstacle to overcome. Jack recounted a story of when he first arrived in the US and was going through customs. I couldn’t understand them and they couldn’t understand me, and they just yelled at me, there was nothing I could do. Jack said he felt scared and helpless. Jack said he has had a lot of help finding his way during his four years at St. Francis. He credits Art teacher Scott Hosken with being his mentor. “He has really helped me a lot, not only academically, but with daily life, he taught me how to be polite. He brought me to the Fine Arts Awards Banquet and is always willing to give suggestions and offer advice” said Jack. Throughout his four years he has been involved in Men’s Choir, WSTF-TV, Chess Club, and volunteered for Open House, Justinian, and the musical. What advice would he give other International students who are interested in St. Francis High School?
“Make sure that your English is good, that you can speak and understand it”.
Meet Konstantin Rudnikov, a freshman from Russia who will call Connecticut home when he’s not at school. He came to the United States in May of 2014 and started as a freshman this past September. Konstantin says he learned about American culture by watching movies, and that what he’s experienced has been better than the movies. “You shouldn’t believe what the Russians say about the US,” he joked. So far he says he likes the teachers the best, the way they teach, and help you along the way. “They are friendly and encouraging.” His most challenging subjects have been English and Biology. Konstantin admits that he struggles with essays in English class, but he said looks at the challenge as an opportunity to improve and learn.
He is involved in Mundi Eventus with Mr. Hannon. “I have fun with the other kids in the club and is improving my social skills. Mr. Hannon has a great personality and is always friendly and helpful to me.”
Even though he is only a freshman he says that he is already starting to think about college and thinking about his future. While he would love to play hockey in the NHL he said he knows that’s probably not realistic and he needs to have a plan. He’s thinking about studying law or going into politics, and would like to go to college in Washington, DC. His advice to other International students? “Always ask for help and don’t be shy. Be honest if you don’t understand something, and show effort in everything you do, your school work, athletics. Don’t be lazy. Teachers will notice when you show effort”. He says he puts education first. “I don’t want to struggle in life, that’s why I’m here, to get a good start on my gentlemen life”. Brandon Metz is a junior transfer student from Cambridge Ontario, Canada and has been attending St. Francis High School since September 2014. He said his interest in St. Francis stems from a love of football and a desire to play at the collegiate level. Culturally, St. Francis High School itself has not been a difficult transition for Brandon, but living in the residence is a different story. He’s had the opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of cultural experiences. He rooms with Konstantin who he says is a good roommate and speaks “pretty good” English. “He’s even taught me some Russian,” said Brandon. Coming from a public school in Canada, Brandon says his experience in the classroom has been very different from what he’s used to. “The teachers here care about you and what you are doing, they want you to succeed”. He also says he thought it would be difficult to make friends, but that hasn’t been the case at all, it’s been easy to make friends. Continued on page 12

Looking back Jack says that he has found the entire experience very valuable. Now that graduation is on the horizon, Jack is looking toward his future and college. He has applied to several universities in the US including Ohio State, University of Wisconsin and the University of Connecticut, just to name a few. He said is ready to start the next phase of his life and is feeling prepared to go on to college.
Konstantin is also on the JV White Hockey team. “I like the coaches and the other kids on the team. I like the American way of life”.

1970S STEVE SCHUMER ‘77 has been ordained to the Holy Order of Deacon through the invocation of the Holy Spirit, and imposition of hands, by His Excellency Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, on June 14, 2014. Steve is assigned to his home parish of St. Bernadette in Orchard Park, NY and to ministry of charity with Catholic Charities of Western New York. Steve and his wife Mary have two grown children, Elizabeth and Timothy’08.
BRYAN WITTMAN ’77 was elected to the Shea’s O’Connell Preservation Guild. Bryan recently retired after 28 years with Disney, where he planned, produced and promoted his way from the promotions department to the office of corporate Vice President of global special events. He and his wife Kathy currently reside in Hamburg.

CHRISTOFER FATTEY‘96 has become a partner at Hodgson Russ. He is a member of the firm’s Real Estate & Finance Practice, represents lenders and borrowers in asset-based, mortgage-based, floor-plan, bond, construction, cross-border, and acquisition transactions. Chris also works closely with the Bankruptcy, Restructuring & Commercial Litigation Practice in loan work-outs and insolvency matters. In the real estate area, Chris represents clients in purchasing, selling, developing, and leasing of commercial properties. He also has extensive experience with real estate transfer tax and mortgage tax issues.

“There’s a whole other world out there”

(Metz Continued from page 5) While the US and Canada are similar in a lot of ways, he says his most challenging subjects have been US Government and US History. “American kids have grown up learning about their country’s history and government, it’s all new to me”. What does he like best about attending St. Francis High School? “The opportunity to excel in both academics and athletics”. He hopes that this combination will help him get into a good college where he plans to study athletic training and play football.
Getting involved has been key to Ken’s success at St. Francis. He’s been involved in Track, the musical, Men’s Choir and Wrestling. “I got into Wrestling because of Jake (Jake Braunscheidel his homestay brother for the past 3 years) and being on the Wrestling team has taught me confidence”. Ken says the more he got involved the easier everyday life became. Unlike most International students who come from China, Ken says he lost about 30 lbs. which he attributes to Wrestling and Track. His participation in sports has allowed him to become more well-rounded.

The Braunscheidel “ brothers” Zhichen Sha- a.k.a. Ken, is from a small city in southwest China near Hong Kong. He came to St. Francis as a sophomore and has been living with the Braunscheidel family for the past three years. Did he have any preconceived notions about life in the US? “Well”, says Ken, what he knew about life in the US he learned by watching the American TV shows Glee and Gossip Girl. He said he was both excited and afraid. His homestay family was welcoming and friendly, and it was strange at first, but eventually he did feel like part of the family. What does Ken like the most about going to St. Francis? “The spirit of brotherhood and how everyone is encouraging in class and in sports”. With the many cultural differences he said it was difficult to start a conversation with other students.

What was Jake’s take on the situation? It can’t be easy being the principal’s son to begin with, and now there was going to be an Asian kid moving into his house. “I was kind of indifferent and nervous at first having this weird kid in the house, but as time went on he really did become like my brother and part of our family. Ken helps with the chores around the house, he’s always the first to clear the table”, said Jake. Like brothers they don’t always get along said Jake. “We kind of know when one of us is in a ‘mood’ and we just leave each other alone.” Jake said the experience has opened his eyes to more than just the Buffalo world that we live in. “There’s a whole other world out there”. Ken has learned a lot during his time at St. Francis and with the Braunscheidels’. “They taught me how to ride a bike,” said Ken. Something most American kids take for granted.
A Parents View “I really wanted the whole experience to broaden our perspective and view of the world. It has been good for my son to have “brothers” the same age”.
Then in January of 2014, the Braunscheidel family grew again when they welcomed Alan, another International student into their home. Both Ken and Jake admit that they were nervous and it was a bit of an adjustment for them. “Alan is from a different region of China and he has an accent and it was difficult to understand him at first,” said Ken. According to Jake, “He’s integrated well into our family, he’s easy to have in the family”. So what’s on the horizon for these “brothers”? Ken says his dream school is Cornell University where he would like to study Math, Engineering or History. Jake has been accepted to several schools already including Oswego, Mercyhurst, and UB. He plans on studying Business Marketing while continuing to wrestle.
What advice would Ken give other International students who are interested in studying at St. Francis? “Be brave, talk to people, and get involved in as many things as you can and you will be successful.”
Tom Braunscheidel, who grew-up in a big family and had four older brothers said, “by expanding our family and hosting these students it has added a richness and fullness to our lives. Ken was a sophomore when he came to stay with the Braunscheidel family (Tom, Cyndi, Jake & Patty). “There is always an adjustment period when you change the dynamic in the household”, said Tom. “We’ve never drawn a distinction between our biological kids and the kids we host. We treat these boys (Ken and Alan) like they are our kids and we think they appreciate that”. This includes everything from doctors’ appointments, to haircuts, homework, discipline and family vacations. “It really has been an enriching experience for our family. Yes, there are times that dealing with all these teenagers can be trying, but then again that’s true whether the teens are from China or Hamburg. There’s lots of shoes all over the place and their rooms are a mess, I just shut the door.” The Braunscheidel house will be much quieter in May when all three boys graduate, however they will still have a teenage daughter at home. “We are very fortunate to have had these young men in our lives, we are better because of the experience and we hope they are too.”

Jake and Ken said there were a lot of those “ah ha” moments over the past three years where they were both amazed at how different they were and alike in so many ways. Sarcasm and body language were difficult concepts for Ken to grasp at first but he eventually got the hang of it.

Justinian XXXIV- May 2, 2015 The Roaring 20's Celebrating Change at St. Francis High School
During this time of great change, the Very Rev. Justin Figas, OFM Conv. dreamed of establishing a Catholic secondary school in the Niagara Frontier area that would teach discipline, humility, compassion, and integrity. The economic growth of the 20's enabled the Father Justin Drivers to quickly raise the funds necessary to build St. Francis High School. It was dedicated on November 25, 1926 and the first class was enrolled in 1927. At St. Francis High School, there is undoubtedly an atmosphere change. We are in the very midst of our own "Red Raider Roaring 20's." This past summer, the Michalek Library underwent renovations which drastically changed what is considered one of the most popular places on campus. As you read this, plans for our new athletic complex are being worked on. It is certainly an exciting time to be a part of the St. Francis High School community as we modernize our campus and build upon our already stellar history of success. In parallel with the Roaring 20's, we celebrate the continuing trends of innovation and development at St. Francis High School. Justinian XXXIV, to be enjoyed in the spirit of change among the St. Francis High School community, represents an opportunity for you to play an integral part in our future. We dearly appreciate those who devote their time and unique talents to make the Justinian Dinner Auction a night to remember. Please celebrate with us at some of the many gift gathering parties and at Justinian XXXIV on May 2, 2015. THE ROARING 20’S
The Roaring 20's was a tumultuous time in America characterized by innovation and a developing pop culture. During this period, change was on the mind of every American. With the birth of The Harlem Renaissance, jazz music, flapper culture, radio, the mass production of automobiles, and urban lifestyles, the revolutionary period is often regarded as the onset of modern America as we know it today.
