Welcome to this October issue of the Spotlight. And a jam packed issue it is!!

Several events in this issue to think about over the next few weeks - from local fireworks at George Watson’s Rugby Ground (pg 2), to Christmas At The Botanics with the return of the illuminated trail through the gardens (pg 1) to several Charity events, concerts and exhibitions/sales which you will find on the community pages (Pgs 55-57).

Hobbies You’re Never Alone With A Book Club

By Kate McLelland on the type of people who will be attracted to join: their ages, gender and areas of interest.

Decide how many people should be invited as members. A group of between 8 and 16 is a comfortable size, allowing you manage conversations and continue with sessions even if several members are absent.

Think about when and how often the club should get together. Meeting on a monthly or six-weekly basis works well for most people and gives time for books to be read.

It is best if the timing of meetings is agreed through discussions with other members, in order to accommodate their work or childcare commitments. Once you’ve decided on a schedule that works well for the group, try to stick with it.

Newhaven Heritage Community Garden What a year it has been and we have really managed to achieve some colour in the gardens, window boxes, Old Burial Ground and the raised beds in the school playground to make Newhaven bloom. All with help from local people and children from the After School club at Victoria Primary School who have been fascinated seeing rocket and coriander grow and planting and watching mushrooms flourish as well as throwing seed bombs on the new track of soil that was created where there were just paving stones.

We have even planted great planters beside the new sign that depicts the history of Newhaven and the Thistle Foundation made the planters and we have some new window boxes from pallets made by the Edinburgh Tool Library, we are so very lucky.

In May with no rain the hose and water cans were busy each night but we are reaping the benefits now and the gardens are really looking healthy and other local people are now planting too in wee patches so there are delights everywhere you turn. An abundance of strawberries, mint, oregano and foxgloves as well as rosemary make everywhere look delightful.

We have managed to install guttering and a water butt in the school playground so that should make watering easier if there is another dry spell.

We have created pallet plant containers and the children have enjoyed participating and planting and creating bunting and watering and finding bugs, great fun! We have loads of herbs and beans so it is all looking good and a real transformation to the local dull grey streets and buildings.

Over the last two years we have tempted the community to be involved and 4 year olds assist as well as older people and corporate teams. For the Power of Food Festival and Jo Cox campaign ’Good to Chat’ the Old Burial Ground was open and sunny with food from Leith Assembly and songs from the local choir as well as Pilates by Susan, a rare delight as local people that have lived in the area for a long time had not been in the Old Burial Ground before and were so pleased 14

the gate was open. Over 70 people enjoyed sitting and chatting and making new friends.

We are always looking for anyone that wants to be outside and gardening, novices most welcome, there is always weeding, planting and watering to be done and a warm chat is also encouraged as well as the therapy of fresh air. If you have the odd hour to spare then join the gardening team in Newhaven as there is always a spot needing some care and we all learn from each other, I know nothing about plants but enjoy all the results.

Tom and the Man Who Came to Dinner (Part 1)

The big metal pan bubbled quietly on the stove as Ken’s fingers danced across my spice rack. “Hmm, a soupçon more pimento methinks.”

Handing Ken the ladle I asked, “How have you been my old chum?”

“Oh you know, up and down. Listen Tom, you don’t think Sarah will mind me staying for a week or so?”

My smile froze. “Er, a week? I thought it was only for...er, no I don’t think she’ll mind.”

neck, Hannah spun round, waiting for confirmation.

Sarah pointed first to me, then to the hallway. “Can we have a word?” Once out of the kitchen, Sarah and I began a heated discussion conducted in rather strident, hissing tones.

“What have I told you about inviting that man into our house?”

“He’s my oldest friend.”

“He’s a scrounger.”

Ken clapped his hands together. “Excellent! “He’s not a scrounger…he’s a freeloader.”

Now old boy, if you wouldn’t mind setting the “What’s the difference? And why is he table?” wearing your slippers?”

The muffled slam of a car door heralded I followed Sarah’s gaze through the open My Dearly Beloved’s arrival and also kitchen door. “Hey, they’re my slippers!” the smoothing of marital relations on an industrial scale. Hannah, I hereby Oh I’ve missed you! How long are you appoint you deputy pot washer. Now, all staying for? A week?” Hanging from Ken’s hands to the pump!”

More giggles from Hannah as, much to her amusement, Ken flounced around the kitchen, flicking his tea towel across the work surfaces. “I’ll have this place sparkling in no time, Hannah dear.”

Cue more fuming from Sarah.

The next morning, I was awoken by an urgent prod in the small of my back. “Tom! Tom!” (More hissing.) “How dare you invite him without consulting me.”

“I didn’t invite him, he bumped into me and Nigel in the Old Paraffin Lamp and sort of invited himself. Hey, can you smell bacon?”

Leaping from the bed, Sarah bounded down the stairs to admonish the would-be chef.

I decided that this confrontation was one I would be advised to sit out. Shamefully, I disappeared under the folds of Egyptian cotton to await Krakatoa. But Krakatoa did not erupt - in fact I must have nodded off, because on looking at the bedside clock I saw that an hour had elapsed since the initial assault on my olfactory senses.

Gingerly, I padded downstairs to be greeted

not by shouting, but laughter. Sarah, her serviette to her mouth, was stifling a giggle as Ken cleared the remnants of a breakfast feast (whilst wearing Sarah’s pinny). “Oh yes, Tom was completely caked in mud, he looked a complete idiot.”

Fuming, I grabbed the last of the toast. “So Ken, where are you off to today?”

Mournfully, Ken played with the hem of Sarah’s apron. “To the council, I imagine, to see if they will find me a place to stay.

Failing that, I imagine the Salvation Army might consider me.”

“Nonsense Kenneth, we can’t have you out on the streets. Tom will move the sofa bed into the study, won’t you Tom? Tom? Where are you going?”

“Out to buy myself some slippers, that’s where!”

And so dear reader, let that be a warning: charity (it would appear) should never begin at home…

Time To Remember Absent Friends To Absent Friends, the people’s festival of storytelling and remembrance, returns from 1 – 7 November, and is looking for people and organisations from across Scotland to join in.

The festival, started in 2014, gives people across Scotland the opportunity to remember loved ones who have died, through stories, celebrations and acts of reminiscence. It is easy to get involved. The festival website, www.toabsentfriends.org.uk, offers plenty of suggestions.

November has long been associated with remembrance of the dead, through traditions like Samhain and All Souls’ Day. To Absent Friends is reviving those lost traditions and helping to create new ones, as a way to support active remembrance of dead people.

Talking openly about someone who is dead can often cause discomfort or embarrassment, but To Absent Friends wants to change that..

“Just because someone has died doesn’t mean they are not a part of our lives any more,” says Robert Peacock of Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief, the alliance of organisations behind the festival. “They are there in our stories and memories. The festival gives people time and space to remember those people – whether it’s just raising a glass, or something more formal.

In this day and age, we don’t often stop and do that. To Absent Friends has really captured people’s imaginations since we started it in 2014. There have been some very poignant and moving events, as well as many lighter moments shared.”

People can hold a To Absent Friends supper, a simple gathering of friends or family over food to remember and tell stories of people who have died. Alternatively, people can start a To Absent Friends wall at their workplace or community venue. All it needs is some triangles of coloured paper, some pens and an empty noticeboard. People write a tribute to an absent friend and pin it up, until the wall is filled with memories. Other groups choose an activity more suited to them. HIGH-TEC HORRORS When your gadgets go bump in the night Some of the scariest things don’t make very good costumes: nobody’s going to go to a fancy dress party as The Laptop Full Of Orange Juice, The Stolen Smartphone or The Family Photos That Got Deleted By Accident. But unfortunately such horrors do exist. How can you ensure that they don’t give you nightmares?

The first step to avoid any kind of digital disaster is to have backups of anything important. You can do that in several ways: you can copy files to an external hard disk; you can upload them to an online service such as Microsoft OneDrive or Yahoo’s Flickr; or you can backup to CD-R or DVD. That latter option is the least safe, though, because discs can easily be lost or damaged. We prefer the online option, as it ensures our backups are kept far, far away in the event of emergency.

Keeping up-to-date backups means that even if your hardware suffers a horrible fate, your important files - your family photos, perhaps, or the book you’re secretly writing - don’t go with it.

If your device is lost or stolen there are a few things you can try. Apple and Android phones and tablets have a “find my device” option - for Apple it’s Find My Phone in iCloud, and in Android it’s google.com/ android/find. The latter even includes Android TVs, if you have one. You can use the services to make the device play a sound if you think you’ve just put it somewhere nearby or to display a message urging the finder to call, but you 1 can also use them 40

to lock the device and erase all the data on it, rendering it useless to any thief or to anyone who 2 finds it.

One of the most common digital disasters is water damage: a drink spilled on a laptop, or a smartphone dropped in liquid. If that happens to you, stop immediately - and we mean immediately, because every second counts - and turn it off; if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the keyboard is facing downwards and the liquid can drip out.

Wipe any wet surfaces, unplug every cable and leave it on top of a towel for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry place. Don’t try to fastforward by using a hair dryer, as its heat can damage delicate components. When you’re absolutely sure it’s dry turn it back on and look for signs of weird behaviour: if it doesn’t work properly, you’ll need to take it to a repair shop. With phones the process is much the same, but you might get better results if you put the phone in a bag of uncooked rice. Rice is ultra-absorbent and can help dry your phone out more quickly.

As for our final horror, accidentally deleted files, you can get them back if you move quickly. That’s because when you trash a file it doesn’t actually get deleted; instead, it’s marked as “okay to over-write”. If you can get to it before it’s overwritten you can usually get it back, even if you’ve emptied the recycle bin. Our go-to app for recovering files is Recuva (www.recuva.com), which works on Windows, on camera memory cards and on USB sticks too. There’s a free version for simple recovery jobs.

Exercising Through The Ages You are never too old to get moving... As we get older, there are changes in our bodies that mean an exercise programme needs to be adapted accordingly. Our muscles and connective tissues become less pliable and we also lose muscle mass as we age. Posture and balance can become compromised, and bones can also become porous and brittle (osteoporosis). Whilst we can’t turn back time, we can help slow the ageing process with regular sensible exercise.

An exercise programme for a 20 year old looks quite different to a programme for an individual in the 80’s. Younger folk need to do more jumping, move faster and general push their bodies. Young bodies recover from intense exercise quicker than older folk, which is why you generally see young

athletes. Interestingly, older people often excel at ultra-distance events (longer than a marathon).

I often put together exercise programmes for clients who are 80+ years old, and they include chair exercises (from a seated position), light weights, leg strength and posture and balance. For some people, being able to get down on the ground and back up again is a goal. If you are elderly and fall down, it’s good to know that you have the strength to get back up again.

Climbing stairs can become more difficult as we age, and getting around the house can become a challenge. Lower impact strength exercises are important in helping keep good muscle tone. Doing an exercise programme can be really helpful in ‘actions of daily life’, also known as ADL’s.

Flexibility and stretching regularly is also important for posture and keeping muscles pliable – they will be less likely to get damaged if stretched regularly. Measured exercise is also essential for rehabilitation after a knee or hip replacement. Most importantly you need to maintain your range of movement.

In fact, the night after I started writing his article, a BBC series started on television ‘How to Stay Young’ – the premise of the show is examining individuals nutrition and exercise, both of which are important in ageing well.

So get moving and feel younger!

Rugby is a game for everyone – all ages, all body shapes and all levels of experience and we would love you to come along to Goldenacre to give rugby a go. Heriot’s Rugby Club offers great training, great facilities and a safe environment for your children to play rugby.

The ethos of Heriot’s Junior Section, aka The Hammers, is to foster and develop young players (boys & girls) of all abilities in the game of rugby in a safe and enjoyable environment through activities which ensure progressive skill development for all participants in line with the SRU youth programme. Heriot’s Rugby Junior Section has 200+ registered players who regularly take part in training and or games on a weekly basis. We are all inclusive and girls and boys age 5 to 16 from Heriot’s as well as all local schools are welcome. All our coaches are PVG registered, all are SRU qualified to the appropriate level and we have a First Aid presence at all sessions.

We adhere to the Scottish Rugby Values of leadership, enjoyment, achievement, engagement and respect.

Training is at Goldenacre on Sunday afternoons from 1.30pm till 3.00pm so why not come along and give rugby a go – make new friends and have loads of fun.

St Andrew’s was the first place of worship in the new development. Come along at the end of October to see inside the beautiful oval church and browse through the many paintings and Scottish books generously donated for sale for the benefit of Christian Aid. With news every day of huricanes, floods, famine and warfare there is a very pressing need for global aid. Kick the Cat Cloggers.

There will be a Jazz Concert,featuring Stirling Crisis, on Friday 20th October, from 7:30 -9:30 in the Church on Saxe Coburg Street. Tickets are ÂŁ 15 which includes wine at in the interval.

The concert is in aid of the Charity Daisy Chain which raises money to benefit children, giving grants to organisations for Medical care, Welfare , and Education.

Beef And Pepper Stroganoff Serves 4

Ready in 25 minutes

This is a fabulously quick and easy supper that is packed full of flavour.

Serve with a watercress or rocket salad, if liked.

Ingredients: • 350g tagliatelle • 1tbsp olive oil • 4 flash-fry steaks (each about 125g), cut into thin strips • 1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced • 300ml carton half-fat crème fraiche • 2tsp coarsely ground black pepper • 1-2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley

TIP

Add a spoonful of wholegrain mustard with the crème fraiche for an extra piquant flavour or try a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the tagliatelle and cook for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions.

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and stir-fry the steak strips over a very high heat until browned.

Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Add the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden then add the pepper slices and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Return the steak strips and any meat juices to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and ground black pepper.

Heat through gently.

Stir in the parsley and adjust the seasoning to taste. Drain the tagliatelle and divide between four warmed shallow pasta bowls. Spoon the steak mixture on top and garnish with a little more freshly ground black pepper.
