Hello And Welcome To The November Issue Of The Trinity Spotlight Well, the planning for the Festive Season is well and truly upon us. By the time this issue drops through your door there will less than 7 weeks until Christmas. How quick has this year gone. Some would say that is a sign of getting old - but as I always think you are only as old as you feel and act, I can’t agree with this one!!

If you are a Foodie then you will want to head straight to page 27 where you can win VIP tickets to this years Foodies Festival at the EICC this month.

St Serfs Players are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year which is quite an achievement. Their Christmas performance of Aladdin is being held in St Serfs church at the end of the month, a date for your diary.

History The History of the Remembrance Day Poppy

By Catherine Rose With celebrations to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, the humble but striking poppy will once again be evident as a symbol of hope and remembrance. But what is its history?

Over the four years that the Great War raged, the fields of Flanders in Belgium that saw much of the bloody trench warfare were decimated. But like some miracle of life triumphing over death, out of this devastation grew hundreds of field poppies.

Part of the papaver family (papaver rhoeas), the Flanders Poppy, as it came to be known, thrived in the barrenness – its bright red colour echoing the bloodshed and a perfect symbol of hope for the future.

Canadian WW1 soldier and poet John McCrae wrote the now famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ about their significance in 1915. After reading a copy of McCrae’s poem, American University Professor Moina Michael was so moved that she promptly went out to Wannamaker’s – a department store in New York – and bought all the artificial poppies they had. She then sold them as souvenirs of remembrance under the banner ‘keep the faith’.

Due to Moina’s efforts, the National American Legion adopted the poppy as their symbol, agreeing to wear it on Armistice Day, 11th November.

While attending an American Legion Convention in 1920, Anna Guérin, a member of the French YWCA, saw the poppy not only as a global symbol of remembrance but also as a way of raising funds. She decided to start mass producing artificial poppies to sell as badges in France. The proceeds would be used to help war widows and 6

orphans.

After they proved a success in France, Anna took them abroad. In England, she met Field Marshall Douglas Haig, also the first president of the (Royal) British Legion founded in 1921 and the first British Legion Poppy Day Appeal took place in 1921 with nine million poppies sold and over £100,000 raised. The other allied countries soon followed suit.

In 1922, Major John Howson opened the first UK poppy factory in London. Howson had received the Military Cross during the First World War and had subsequently set up The Disabled Society to help provide employment for disabled veterans. His initial staff were five disabled ex-soldiers.

Today there are two poppy manufacturers in the UK – The Poppy Factory in Richmond (the original poppy factory relocated) and The Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh.

The Scottish poppy is slightly different to the English in that it has four petals instead of three and no leaf.

Both are staffed by ex-servicemen and women and produce millions of poppies annually. The Poppy Factory also does free tours which are open to all.

Along with the crosses and wreaths that will be placed on war memorials across the country on Remembrance Sunday this centenary year, armies of volunteers will sell millions of poppies in the run up to 11th November.

The idea behind them remains the same – a non-religious, non-cultural symbol of remembrance that helps to raise money for veterans and their families.

Making Christmas Extra Special

by Kate Duggan ELF ON A SHELF The original idea behind Elf on a Shelf was that an elf would arrive at the start of Christmas to watch over children and report back to Father Christmas.

However, the trend has changed in recent years to become a bit more fun (and a bit less creepy). Now the craze is for the elf to get up to mischief overnight, whether it’s making snow angels in flour, tying the children’s shoelaces together or wrapping the loo in Christmas paper. (Search Pinterest for inspiration.)

KINDNESS ELVES Not keen on the idea of a pint-sized prankster?

Kindness elves have become a popular alternative. They still move each night but rather than tricks, they leave notes praising the child for a good deed or suggesting a kind act the child could do, such as visiting an elderly neighbour or making a card for a relative.

time, you could make or buy a reusable calendar to fill with trinkets and secondhand small toys. A bundle of Shopkins characters, for example, can be picked up relatively cheaply on eBay. The calendar can then be brought out again each year, so becoming part of your family’s festive traditions. If you don’t have the time (or energy) to find 24 gifts, the advent calendars from Lego, Smiggle, Playmobil and the Early Learning Centre offer a decent selection of goodies for £20-£30. You can also sometimes find a previous year’s calendar for £10 or less on eBay. Digital calendars have different activities, images, videos or other features to unlock each day. The best one I’ve found is by Jacquie Lawson. It costs just £3 and will work on most computers, smartphones and tablets.

Activities include making a snowflake, decorating a Christmas tree and solving puzzles. Each activity can

What Is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts, suppressed emotions, stress & anxiety to be overcome.

I can get a sense of what is going on and which technique would be most effective. It also gives the client an opportunity to ask questions etc. Should they be necessary, then subsequent sessions are 1 hour.

Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand-side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand-side of the brain is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the sub-conscious mind reached. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for the client’s behaviour and physical state to alter

For example, someone who consciously wants to overcome their fear of spiders, may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror and prevents the client from succeeding. Progress can only be made by reprogramming the subconscious so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered.

The client is not in a deep sleep, merely very relaxed and fully aware of their surroundings and situation and they cannot be made to do anything they would not ordinarily do - they are not vulnerable to every given command of the therapist. The important thing is that the client wants to change some behavioural habit or addiction and is highly motivated to do so.

I have many, many different hypnotic techniques that I use with clients. There is not a “one-size fits all”. Each session is very personal to my individual client’s needs. A first session with me is 1.5 hours and we spend the first 30-40 minutes chatting, so

What can members expect from Christmas at the Botanics?

A truly magical Christmas night out. Christmas at the Botanics is the perfect way to start your season’s festivities. Audiences will leave after dark from John Hope Gateway and follow a lit trail for just over a mile. We expect that this will take around an hour to complete but there is no time limit for visitors, and they are welcome to take as long as they need, they can also enjoy a mulled wine or toasting marshmallows at our pop-up catering stalls along the route. Some of this year’s highlights include light projections with music on the Glasshouse and on Inverleith House, a fire garden, a Santa show and several large light installations by both UK based and international artists.

What are you using as your inspiration for this year’s Christmas at the Botanics?

The Botanics’ conifer collection will be the main focus of this year’s event. We will be working closely with their inhouse teams to ensure that the conifer exhibition which the Botanics are planning to install in the John Hope Gateway is an integral part of the trail.

Who are you working with to create the 2018 Christmas at the Botanics?

We work with both local and international artists to develop content for this event. We have a new Australian company who specialise in lighting installations that we are working with to create a 70m long pea light tunnel this year, as well as French company Tilt who are returning with new work. All the people on the ground who manage the install and run the event are employed locally and it is their expert knowledge of the area and the Gardens that really make the event very special for the visitor.

This is your second year of working on Christmas at the Botanics. What do you enjoy about working in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a city that truly embraces winter festivities. Here, unlike other sites we are part of a much greater offer to visitors. Hundreds of thousands of tourists come to Edinburgh to spend Christmas and New Year so we are not only providing a festive experience for locals, we are part of that visitor package which reaches a global market and that’s very exciting for us. We also know that similar to London and Christmas at Kew, Edinburgh audiences have a huge choice of activities on offer over the Christmas period, therefore we really need to work hard to stand out and ensure that audiences hear about the event.

The People Of Leith Gather For A Service To Commemorate The End Of WW1 On Saturday 10th November 2018 at 2pm the people of Leith will gather at Tower Place outside the Malmaison Hotel, to commemorate the many thousands of Leithers who served and gave their lives in World War One –‘the War to end all Wars’.

Almost 15,000 Leithers served in World War One, of which it is estimated around 3,000 gave their lives and many more were wounded and maimed for life, both physically and mentally.

It is important that the community of Leith never forgets the sacrifice made by these proud Leithers and the service on Tower Place will be attended by Frank Ross, Rt Hon. Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh who commented “I am honoured to contribute to the commemoration recognising the bravery, commitment and sacrifice of Leith people over the last 100 years. It is a fitting tribute to have a restored railway carriage here in Leith to remember in particular the young men of the 7th Batt.

Royal Scots who lost their lives in the Gretna Rail Disaster in May 1915.”

There will also be representatives from the Armed Services, Army, Navy and Air Force as well as the Merchant Navy and other

community groups within Leith.

Sir Andrew Cubie CBE FRSE, Chair of the Leith Trust commented ‘As we approach the centenary of the Armistice of World War One. We can only do so to honour fully those who perished from Leith in the conflict and the families they left behind. It is so hard for us in 2018 to comprehend the scale of the sacrifice and family tragedies which the First War caused, 100 years ago. Every street in Leith was touched by losses and for those of us now who are in our later years we readily recall tales of those hundreds of thousands young men who died before they reached the age of twenty. We must never forget’ The service will be conducted by the Rev Iain may, Minister of South Leith Parish Church who said ‘ The people of Leith played a significant part at home and overseas in the Great War and it is only fitting that we as community should gather and commemorate the end of such a destructive war and to give thanks for the peace that ensued‘ For further information please contact Col Robert Watson on 0131 629 7147 or email rmwat@tiscali.co.uk.

There will be a presentation entitled “Leith’s War” in Leith Library on Thursday 8th November at 2 p.m. Tickets can be booked at the desk in the library.

There will also be a presentation at the Malmaison Hotel on Saturday 10th November after the service at 3.30 p.m. then again on Sunday 11th November at 3 A limited number of tickets are available from Leith Library.

From Wednesday 7th to Tuesday 13th November, a display relating to Leith during the Great War will be mounted in the library. It will include information relating to the majority of Leith casualties killed during the conflict.

Five volumes of the Leith Roll of Honour will be on display in Leith Library on Friday 9th November from 10.00 to 16.30. These contain entries of 2206 Leithers killed in theGreat War 1914 -1919. All wishing to view them are welcome.

Members of staff of Lothian health services archive where these volumes are conserved will be in attendance throughout.

An Update From Local Councillor Jim Campbell Over the last few months, the Trinity Community Council (TCC) has been working with local Primary Schools on a project called “A Sense of Place.” This involved pupils being asked to draw something that captured what Trinity meant to them. The drawings were displayed in a variety of ways, and those of most interest have been collated on a banner that the TCC can use to represent Trinity.

It was great to see TCC and other locals work with the schools, teachers & pupils, to bring this together. One of the key themes pupils identified was the importance of the green space and trees to our area. We are lucky to have so much greenery around us.

Of course this is a result of the joint effort of individual residents and Council activity.

In fact, the Council scores highly in terms of reported satisfaction with parks, despite quite a modest budget. An interesting outcome, suggesting that good results can be achieved from well controlled and directed spending. One example has been the decision to allow some areas within our parks to grow as natural meadows, with an increase in biodiversity and a reduction in grass cutting costs. Not everyone is convinced of the merits, and it can only work in limited areas, but it does provide a natural environment for us to enjoy as we have had to tighten our collective belt.

An area where the Council has found it more challenging is the management of trees – some 150,000 grow on Council land. Here, there is a significant backlog of non-urgent work that we know needs to be carried out, but the lack of Forestry resources delays action. This is an area where I think a small budget increase would show the Council as a better neighbour and guardian of our urban woodland.

A related source of frustration is foliage that overhangs paths & pavements, creating unnecessary obstructions. If this is coming 36

from private property, it is the responsibility of the owner or occupier to remove such overgrowth. The Council has enforce rights, but this requires a lengthy process. Far better, and less expensive, if all owner and occupiers followed the example set by the vast majority of locals, and took the opportunity to cut back foliage to the limit of their own property.

Also on the website is your chance to influence our Budget decisions for the next few years. Look out for “Planning for Change, Delivering Services 2019-2023” and tell us if where you think we should be prioritising spending and savings.

On Vegetarianism Veganism is a new trend. Eating less meat has been linked to many benefits, both for your health and for the environment.

Processed meat has been linked to some types of cancer, and it’s not uncommon to read meat-scare articles in the newspapers.

Generally, it seems people become vegetarian for one of two reasons: either the ethical implication of slaughtering animals, or the impact that intensive farming has on the environment. Veganisam is the more extreme variation of vegetarianism, where no animal products at all are consumed (so no dairy, eggs, honey etc). Sometimes vegans also eschew wearing leather.

In a recent analysis of food production’s impact on the environment, it was revealed that we all need to eat a whole lot less meat to do our bit for the planet. According to a Guardian newspaper article on 10 October: “The research also finds that enormous changes to farming are needed to avoid destroying the planet’s ability to feed the 10 billion people expected to be on the planet in a few decades.” Whilst Scottish methods of farming may be far from American Vegetarianism can be viewed as a spectrum, CAFO’s (concentrated animal feeding vegans at one end, and ‘flexitarianism’ at the operation, or ‘superfarms’), there has been other end (vegetarians, who occasionally eat recent outcry about the over-farming of meat or fish). It is also possible to be a meat- salmon on the West Coast and lice levels on the fish. If you’re an active vegan, ensure you get adequate protein (nuts, seeds, soy products, pulses, lentils and even oats are reasonable sources); with careful meal planning this is quite doable. Around twenty years ago the only veggie option one could find on a menu (if you were lucky) was macaroni cheese. Times have moved on and most eateries now include a variety of veggie dishes. So try a more plant-based diet – you might even find it increases your energy levels!
