This scene of Newhaven Harbour seemed very appropriate for the Trinity Spotlight. Jamie will again be holding an exhibition in The Dundas Street Gallery in May which will be well worth a visit (details on pgs 4/5). Close to Newhaven ‘Winter skies over Newhaven Harbour’ Harbour, Trinity Primary School will be holding 30cm x 40cm, Oil on linen their annual May Fair on the 20th May. (Pg 51).

P.S I will be there with my Body Shop Goodies and bargains again this year.

If you are looking for some social activities in the next few weeks, St Serfs Players are celebrating their 70th Anniversary with a performance of ‘The House On The Cliff’ in May (pg 7) and Stockbridge Scottish Reelers will again be holding their Summer Ceilidh in early June (pg 6). And if you fancy a walk out and about in the area this summer walk why not visit the Royal Botanic Garden and drop into their summer exhibition ‘The Lost Words’ then have a wander round the beautuful gardens (pgs 28/29). Hopefully with some sunshine to enjoy the walk.

Although best-known for his highly collectable, atmospheric Edinburgh cityscapes and skies, acclaimed contemporary Scottish artist Jamie Primrose has always been fascinated by the calming nature of water and the effect of fleeting light creating glistening impressions.

For his latest stunning exhibition of over 50 new oil paintings, the best-selling painter focuses on soothing watery vistas – revisiting certain locations, which evoke idyllic childhood memories – in and around the capital (including locally) and coastlines nearby.

In his first mini series, Primrose features shimmering ponds in Inverleith Park, the Botanics and the surrounding parklands, as he grew up nearby, locally in Trinity. Next, his artworks continue to reveal a similar depth of emotional attachment in Stockbridge. With many walks as a child on the path from the Colonies along the Water of Leith and towards The Dean Village, he expertly portrays tranquil shimmers, with streams of light and shade on the surrounding architecture just before sunset.

10 Electric Vehicle Myths Busted

by James Baggot Confusion surrounds the running and operation of an electric car. Here, we try to clear that up.

1. You can’t boil the kettle while charging an electric car A National Grid report warned that home networks might struggle to cope with highcapacity car charging.

However, EV owners with a low-capacity home network wouldn’t have a high-capacity charger, so there’s little chance of the network being overloaded.

2. EVs are more expensive than petrol and diesel cars Generally, the base price of an EV will be slightly more expensive, but manufacturers compensate by offering generous specification so that with the government’s £4,500 zeroemission vehicle grant taken into account, they’re a pretty good deal, plus have low running costs.

What’s more, as EV technology becomes more prevalent, costs will reduce – the new Nissan Leaf starts at £1,500 less than the old one.

3. They’re more likely to catch fire in a crash Concerns about crash safety are largely driven by a couple of high-profile Tesla Model S fires in 2013.

The EV maker upgraded its underbody battery pack protection in 2014 but also noted that the odds of fires in its cars were “five times lower than those of an average gasoline car”.

4. You can’t drive them in car washes or when it’s raining Water and electricity don’t mix, so the manufacturers carefully seal all of the electrified components to make sure there aren’t any problems using car washes, or driving or charging in the rain.

5. You can’t go very far Most electric vehicles now have a range in excess of 150 miles, with 200 miles becoming the norm – and the average journey is less than nine miles.

6. There’s nowhere to charge them Long trips require a bit more planning, but charge point locator Zap Map indicates there are almost 15,000 connectors at more than 5,000 locations in the UK, with more added all the time. Plus, rapid chargers can provide 80 per cent of charge in about 30 minutes.

7. The batteries don’t last very long Batteries do have a finite life but most manufacturers offer battery leasing for a monthly fee and will replace it for free when needed. Others offer replacement warranties, with five- to eight-year cover the norm.

8. EVs are less environmentally friendly across their life cycle The energy required to build an electric car can make it less environmentally friendly to produce than a traditionally fuelled car.

However, a Norwegian study quoted by the BBC estimates an EV is about 10 per cent better over its life cycle, and that will continue to improve.

9. Battery disposal poses a huge environmental issue It does, but the EV boom has encouraged lateral thinking to improve recycling rates, with companies taking used EV batteries for use elsewhere, such as home energy storage.

10. They’re boring to drive Modern electric cars can be genuinely fun to drive, particularly thanks to the high-torque motors, which make acceleration brisk.

Tesla takes this to extremes with its Model S, which reaches 60mph in less than 3 seconds – comparable to the new McLaren Senna supercar, with its petrol-powered twin-turbo V8.

Special Effects - The End of an Era On 1st April a celebration was held at the Victoria Park Hotel, Ferry Road, to mark the end of 46yrs of business for Barbara Ramsay at her salon, SPECIAL EFFECTS in Newhaven Road.

Despite it being Easter Sunday, well over 100 of her loyal clients and ex-staff arrived to enjoy afternoon tea and to share in the fond farewell at which almost £500 was raised for Bethany Trust for Edinburgh’s Homeless.

Amazingly, some of these clients date back to the very beginning of Barbara’s time in the salon and for some she has known three or four generations of the their families!

From 1969-72 : Barbara Campbell, Bernie O’Donnell, Catherine Macnaughton, Christine Buchanan, Ellen Wilson, Esther McPherson, Jacky Lofthouse, Malcolm Blyth, Morag Macdonald and Margaret Allen.

From 1972 : Cath Ross, Isobel Watson, Janet Milligan, Jean Gorman and Kay Macfarlane.

It all began for Barbara in March 1969 when she went to work for the previous owner, Ian Jennings-Brown, in his salon then named Mr Ian. Three years later she took over in partnership with her parents renaming the salon Trinity Hair Stylists. But by 1984 she was able to buy out her parents, becoming the sole proprietor and SPECIAL EFFECTS was born.

Since April 1st 1972 the salon has employed a grand total of 64 staff including 17 Stylists, 13 Beauty Therapists, 13 Schoolgirls/ Student Helpers, 11 Apprentices and 10 General Assistants. Some more than once - others not for long! To mention a few, Lynne MacPherson worked for Barbara many times after school and as a student. Sharon Murray, Saturday girl to qualified stylist who later job-shared with her mother, Joyce, to help Barbara through a difficult time. Lorraine Meikle came as a Saturday girl and went on to become the salons top stylist for 14 years.And last but by no means the least, Margaret Forbes, who worked unstintingly for 18 years with only ONE MORNING’S ABSENCE! Of course there are many other staff and clients, who have all been of great importance but too numerous to mention.

Discover The Line-Up For This Year’s Festival!

This June, 23 community gardens across Edinburgh will open their gate to the public for a weekend of fun and celebration!

We are delighted to announce that the 23 community food gardens listed below will take part in the 4th edition of The Power of Food Festival on 16-17 June 2018. Together, we will celebrate the wealth and diversity of community spirit which is cultivated and shared by hundreds of volunteers and community workers in food growing initiatives all across the city.

Participating gardens are very diverse: from old farmhouse, long-lost ancient castle grounds, and internationally renowned gardens, to previously unloved pieces of land, urban and rural crofts, and repurposed old industrial sites; they all have an interesting story to tell and flourish through the energy of the volunteers who breathe life into them. They are often small and hidden away, sometimes large and familiar city landmarks. The 23 gardens you’ll be able to explore during the Festival are scattered all around the city and beyond. All will welcome visitors on one or both days of the Festival for garden tours, food, gardening workshops, music, storytelling or other entertainment, and children activities. Help Your Health With Happiness

By Tracy Griffin What is happiness? It means different things to different people but the once thing we have in common is that it makes us feel good. ‘A warm glow’, ‘beaming with joy’, ‘radiant’ are all expressions that we use to describe that positive feeling. Being happy makes us feel good.

But it’s not quite so simple. There are a lot of things in life that appear as obstacles to happiness. It’s always ‘just around the corner’, ‘once I’m on holiday’, ‘after retirement’ – in fact happiness is something that we sometime put on hold to get on with ‘real’ life. Why wait? The easiest way to be happy is to be grateful. It’s a cliche, but being genuinely grateful for what you already have is a key to contentment.

As a teenager I was lucky enough to go trekking in the Himalayas. We walked through remote villages where the locals would come and out greet us beaming from ear to ear from the porch of a very basic hut. It was a good lesson to learn early on life that it doesn’t matter what you have but how you perceive what you have, that is the important thing. Happy people are more generous and kind, to others and themselves. It has a knock on effect, it’s contagious!

It’s easy for us to lose sight of what makes us happy, and so it’s worth checking out Action for Happiness (http://www. actionforhappiness.org/) for some simple exercises in developing a positive mental mindset. There are also physical benefits to being happier – it combats stress, helps sleep, it’s meant to strengthen your immune system and protect your heart (less stressed animals are healthier, as any pet owner can testify).

Sometimes in life it’s less easy to see the silver lining in the clouds, but simply being 32

more aware of your present and taking time to smell the proverbial roses can boost your mood. Mindfulness has become a buzzword; you can even get meditation and mindfulness apps on your smartphone, for those who struggle to switch off. There are Mindfulness magazines (for example https:// www.mindful.org) available at newsagents.

DON’T BE SCARED OF THE DARK… • Dark colours can look warm, cosy and inviting, as well as intensely luxurious and sophisticated. • What colours to choose? Charcoal grey is intense and eye-catching, yet neutral enough to work as a backdrop for most furnishings. If you prefer a colour, however, navy, burgundy or forest green will make even more of an impact – but will be harder to co-ordinate with.

• If all-over dark is simply too much, add drama to a room by painting or papering just one ‘feature’ wall in a distinctive deep colour, or perhaps choosing one or two key items of furniture with which to inject moody character.

• Remember that surface textures affect how light or dark a room feels. Matt surfaces absorb light whereas glossy surfaces reflect it. Painting floorboards black, for example? Choose a high-gloss finish to shine light all around.

• The deeper the background, the more other colours ‘pop’ out in front of it. Raspberry pink, crimson, lime, orange, emerald and mustard are all great choices for accessories in a dark colour scheme.

Good Death Week “What is a good death?” That is the question being asked of people in Scotland for Good Death Week, which takes place across the country between 14-20 May. It invites people to ask themselves what a good death means to them, through events, activities and online discussion.

The week is organised by Good Life Good Death Good Grief, an alliance of Scottish organisations and individuals working to make Scotland a place where there is more openness about death, dying and bereavement.

People are encouraged to participate in whatever way they see fit, even by just asking the question of a friend of family member. For those looking for inspiration, Good Life Good Death Good Grief offer many different ways to get the conversation started on their website.

One popular idea is the Death Lunch, a gathering of people to discuss death over food and drink. Good Life Good Death Good Grief have a conversation menu for download, which provides three “courses” of conversation starting questions, and are offering a limited number of £50 grants for people to host their own Death Lunch.

In previous years, people have also created “Before I Die…” walls – spaces on a blackboard or noticeboard where people can reveal their wishes of things they would like to do before they die. An online version of the Before I Die wall has been running for five years, and alongside final wishes such as “to see the Great Barrier Reef” or “to go on an elephant safari”, are more off-the-wall choices like “understand Bob Dylan’s songs”.

The alliance also have an exhibition available for display. “It Takes A Village” is a powerful and moving series of photographic 48

portraits by award-winning Glasgow based photographer, Colin Gray, looking at the different forms care at the end of life can take. The exhibition can be provided with feedback cards for people to record their own thoughts and feelings about what they’ve seen.

Robert Peacock, Development Manager for Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief said: “Being prepared for the inevitable is one way to help family and friends to cope at the end of your life, however difficult the conversation may be to have. Talking about it does not bring the event nearer, but it may help you reach decisions that are very important, like where you want to die, what medical interventions you might want or not want, how you want to be cared for in your dying days. The time to discuss that is when you are fit and healthy, not when a crisis point is reached.”

THE SINGING GROUP @ INVERLEITH FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA & THEIR CARER(S) Our group has been running since June 2010 meeting at 2.00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. We currently meet at Inverleith St Serf’s Church Hall on Clark Road, Edinburgh The group is for people with dementia, and their carers, who still live at home in the community. Research has indicated that people with dementia leave singing groups ‘on a high’ and this positive mood can last for some time after each session. This is also good for the well being of the carer.

The group come together to sing with emphasis on enjoyment and fun. Volunteers are on hand but those with dementia should be accompanied. There is no charge for attending the Singing Sessions, but a donation for refreshments is appreciated.

The group meet for coffee and conversation first, giving people a chance to socialise.

Support is also available from volunteers and other families. When singing begins, we sit in a circle ensuring that everyone is equal and not identified by their illness. We then sing along together for around 45 minutes, led by ‘music volunteers’.

The group was started by a small number of individuals in June 2010 who understood the importance of music and singing with people with Dementia. All our Volunteers undergo Dementia Awareness Training.

World Orienteering Day Wednesday 23rd May has been designated World Orienteering Day. There will be events held all over the globe with a view to publicising orienteering and encouraging folks, young and not so young, to take part in this exciting adventure activity.

Edinburgh clubs, Interlopers (INT) and Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club (ESOC) will be offering a series of free fun activities in the Meadows (close by the Tennis Courts) from 11am until 4pm.

Everyone can part no matter their age or how fit they are. You can walk or run around the activities either singly or in groups. Just turn up on the day, suitably dressed and you will be sure of some enjoyable, healthy activity that give your brain and your limbs some gentle but challenging exercise.

One of the highlights of the year in Edinburgh is the annual book and art sale in George Street. This year the sale begins on Saturday 12 May and runs until Saturday 19. The venue, once again, is St Andrew’s and St George’s West, one of the city’s most beautiful churches.

Every year the sale has a Patron. This year we welcome the great playwright and artist, John Byrne. He wrote the cult television series Tutti Frutti and the much admired play, the Slab Boys. His portrait of Billy Connolly in his banana boots hangs in the People’s Palace in Glasgow. Very generously he has donated a self portrait to the sale; one of many paintings donated by artists. Nothing is sold before 10am on the first day of the sale, so come along and find a treasure and remember that the money raised goes to help the poorest and most needy right across the world.
