Welcome To The March/April Trinity Spotlight Welcome to this Spring issue of the Trinity Spotlight. I hope as this issue drops through your door that you, your family and loved ones are all safe and well. With so much turmoil around the world we are in very uncertain times. Putting this issue together has proved a bit of a challenge to say the least. I send my layouts to the printers a week before the Spotlight is actually distributed. So as I am writing this the situation is changing very quickly. By the time it comes through your door I am sure things will have significantly changed again, hopefully for the better (though I am not certain that will be the case). I have included community information in this issue as at the time of going to print I really did not know what was going to happen - so please check any of the info included in case events are no longer going ahead. At this stage all I can do is send everyone my best wishes, hope that you stay well, help friends, neighbours and loved ones as best you can in what are very unusual and scary times. Take care, stay well, stay safe and be kind.
Best Wishes Sue

6 Top Tips for Present Moment Living
By Gillian Dalgliesh
Hello! You have probably heard about “Living in the moment”, “Being Present”, “Mindfulness”. All well and good and definitely a worthwhile philosophy to apply to one’s daily life. However, it can be harder to put into practice than it may seem! Just because you may read or hear a quote that advocates “live life in the present moment” doesn’t mean that you suddenly know how to do so! Living life in the present takes practice, even though it should come naturally to us. We have generally spent so long worrying about the future, feeling pressured into behaving a certain way, apprehensively worrying about family, or striving for the next bigger and better thing that we can focus most of our attention on the future instead of the present. This can result in a general feeling of never having or being “enough”, anxiety, unhappiness, and increased levels of stress. In addition, we now have Coronavirus to worry about!
Are you struggling to deal with issues in your life? Weight Loss? Anxiety? Stress? Smoking? Phobias? Alcohol? Confidence? If so, then hypnotherapy may be the solution. Find out more about my holistic approach to resolving client’s issues on my website www.gilliandalgliesh.com or call me on 07593 082 349 for a free consultation
In contrast, when you truly live in the present moment you feel content, grounded, secure & happy. You can profoundly resonate with what makes you happy NOW! Right now! READER – yes YOU! - TRY IT NOW! Forget about your ambitions. Forget about what you perceive as disappointments. Forget about your worries & projections of what about when such & such happens or about needing to do an urgent thing. Shift your awareness into “What makes my life tick right now in a positive, wonderful, satisfying, joyful, happy & peaceful way. What do I have to be grateful for? What do I appreciate?” It doesn’t have to be anything major! It may be that you start to recognise daily occurrences that resonate with a feel good factor. A smile, a kind word, a gesture. It does not mean that if you live in the moment that you have no concept of your future. There are many things that are exciting to think about and many things that are essential to think about: things you need to do, ideas, plans and goals. However, what it does mean is that you are not expending your precious energy worrying about things that re not actually happening in this present moment, or under your control. Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it! Here are 6 suggestions for present moment living: 1. Pay attention to & appreciate the little things - the appearance of snowdrops, the laughter of a child … When you decide to pay attention and notice things, you bring yourself into the present and calm your entire system. 2. Don’t Worry, Find Solutions – instead of worrying, find a way to discover solutions to 10
resolve the challenge. 3. Write Things Down – if you are feeling a general malaise of negativity, get it out of your head by writing down everything that’s bothering you. It’s a very simple, and yet, awesomely powerful way to rationalise, organise and change negative thinking. 4. Smile More – how often do you look in the mirror and smile at yourself? Smiling can change our emotional state and bring you into the now. 5.Be Grateful – gratitude & appreciation are high vibrating frequencies and bring so much positivity into our lives. Being grateful for what you have (and don’t have!) is a powerfully positive emotion. 6.Be Mindful – this means focusing your entire attention on what you are doing. We are all being told to wash our hands frequently & for a minimum of 20 seconds in these Coronavirus times, so why not use the opportunity to be mindful?! Really focus your attention on the feeling of spreading the soap over your skin and then the feeling of the water as it rinses it away. Be fully present and enjoy these handwashing moments and you will notice the calm feeling mindfulness can bring. It helps to reset your emotional barometer! Imagination can be our greatest gift, or our worst enemy! You can find more Mindful and Stress Busting tips on my YouTube channel Gillian Dalgliesh.

The Gentle Art of Forest Bathing
By Tracy Griffen
Feeling stressed? Try Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese pastime of ‘forest bathing’. In Japan busy urbanites retreat to a forest, to reconnect with nature, relax and unwind. forests to boot. It’s backed up by scientific research too. Shinrin-Yoku was developed in the 80’s and has been proven to lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. Just being in a greenspace can help you feel less stressed. For more detailed information read the book (that can be borrowed from the Edinburgh library collection) entitled Shinrin-Yoku: The Art and Science of Forest-Bathing (How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness) by Dr Qing Li. Dr Li was one of the pioneering scientists in forest medicine and it makes for a fascinating read, with lovely photos of

In Scotland we are lucky to have an abundance of forests to walk in. When you go into the forest, inhale the smells, listen for birds and observe the fine details - in a leaf, some moss, a rock. Focus your eyes on the furthest away tree (something you can’t do indoors) and take a few deep breaths. Aaah, that’s better... Getting outdoors and looking at nature is a very easy way to help reduce depression and anxiety and is also a great way to
get fit. A dear old friend has a saying, “in a bad mood? Go walk up a hill”. And it works! When I teach fitness, we not only exercise in the studio, but I show PT clients how to enjoy a good outdoor workout (to their fitness level). Using the natural environment for exercise is a great way to connect with mother nature. Even going for a leisurely stroll through Edinburgh’s Botanic Gardens can give you a boost. Personally I love the palm houses on a dreich day. But with spring on its way, get outdoors and enjoy being surrounded by bright green shoots and tweeting birds. Lovely!
Personal Trainer Tracy Griffen also teaches clients how to get fit from their homes – so you can really exercise wherever you like! See adjacent advert.

An Update From Councillor Jim Campbell By the time you read this, the Council Budget might seem rather unimportant. It was passed in February, and Council Tax bills increased by 4.79%, will be dropping through letterboxes. The ruling minority administration made cuts of around £30M to balance our books (we must by law). These start in April, and will be followed by similar cuts in 2021/22 & 2022/23. It was an ill tempered debate – perhaps one Councillors will look back at with regret.
At March Council, our Chief Executive allocated £2M from our reserves to prepare for the Coronavirus Pandemic. I fear this is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Council Officers are already working round the clock with our partners in the East of Scotland Resilience Network – our civil emergency organisation including the Council, NHS Lothian, Police, Fire, Ambulance, and other key partners such as utilities and social care sector.
For Trinity, the re-building / refurbishment of Trinity Academy was agreed as part of the Capital budget. Work continues on the brand new Victoria Primary in Newhaven, and expanding various schools to accommodate rising roles and new early years provision. £100M has also now been spent catching up with urgent overdue maintenance that successive administrations had failed to address; soon the condition of all Council school buildings should be good or better.
Its hard to know what all the extra costs we face will be, and I’m sure we will be reimbursed for many of them. But they will be substantial. We also risk significant falls in income. There has already been a huge drop in people moving around the City; over 20% based on the pattern of mobile phone usage in mid-March. Lothian Buses may have no profits from which to pay a dividend, never mind the £20M “special dividend” for tram. Parking charges will raise less. Edinburgh Leisure will see a drop in patronage. And so on.
On the revenue side, the education cuts generated lots of correspondence: moving to Early Years Practitioners; removing dedicated Nursery Head Teachers; reviewing Music Tuition; and the 1% cut in each school’s budget, as controlled by the Head Teacher. The last possibly the most significant. Education is the largest budget in the Council; this is the first year such cuts have been made. Funding to Local Community Policing will cease, Edinburgh Leisure receives less, and various other efficiencies are planned (efficiencies which, I am sure, are no more than most people would expect). Since the Council budget was passed, we know the cuts to Local Authorities funding by the Scottish Government have been eased a little. The UK Government budget saw a big increase in funds to Scotland, some of which should help Councils. I am worried, however, that we won’t be in a position to reverse many cuts. 40
But that’s just money. We have already moved from the Containment phase, to the Delay phase of fighting the Coronavirus, a virus from which we have no immunity. Delay is crucial in trying to reduce and spread out the peak of infections, both to reduce the load on the NHS and move us into the warmer months. The last two phase to the action plan are Research and Mitigate. In the words of our Prime Minster, “It is going to spread further and I must level with you, I must level with the British public: many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time.” The latest information on Coronavirus can be found at www.nhsinform.scot/ coronavirus<http://www.nhsinform.scot/ coronavirus> I can be contacted at the City Chambers on 0131 529 4235, or better still, by email: jim. campbell@edinburgh.gov.uk
